  • Defending champs top 5 of 7 preseason football rankings

    Defending champions rule the preseason football rankings, save for two classifications.

    Pine Creek (Class 4A), Pueblo East (3A), Brush (2A), Paonia (1A) and Caliche (8-man) all won championships last season — and each one sat atop their respective classfication when the preseason CHSAANow.com Football Polls were released on Monday.

    Only Valor Christian (5A) and Fleming (6-man) are preseason No. 1 teams without being a defending champion. Valor was the runner-up in 5A last season, while Fleming was a semifinalists in 6-man.

    The 5A voters were pretty determined that the top three teams this season would be Valor, Cherry Creek and Pomona. Each team received at least one first-place vote, and the trio separated themselves from the rest of the field by more than 50 points each.

    Valor got nine of the 15 first-place votes and totaled 140 points. Cherry Creek, last season’s 5A champion, is No. 2 with four first-place votes and 134 total points. Pomona got one first-place vote and is No. 3 at 123 total points.

    At No. 4 is Regis Jesuit and new coach Dan Filleman. Perennial contender Columbine rounds out the top five.

    Fairview, led by senior star Carlo Kemp, checks in at No. 6; returning semifinalist Grandview is No. 7; and Fountain-Fort Carson is No. 8.

    Ralston Valley, another semifinalist, opens at No. 9, and Doherty rounds out the ranking at No. 10.

    The 4A ranking featured the lone unanimous top-ranked team in Pine Creek. The two-time defending champion Eagles, who feature Nebraska commit JoJo Domann, got all 12 first-place votes and totaled 120 points.

    Longmont, the 4A runner-up, is No. 2; Dakota Ridge is third; and Falcon (No. 4) and Denver South (No. 5) round out the top five.

    In 3A, defending champion Pueblo East returns a stacked roster, but will have a new coach in interim head Lee Meisner. Even still, the Eagles got 13 of the 14 first-place votes in 3A, and lead the ranking.

    Fort Morgan got the other first-place vote and is No. 2 to begin the year. Evergreen is third, Holy Family is fourth and Palisade is No. 5.

    Brush, another team looking to defend its title, led the 2A poll with seven of the 10 first-place votes. The Beetdiggers, too, have a new coach: Reid Kahl. Kent Denver, last year’s runner-up, opens at No. 2.

    In the 1A ranking, Paonia, the defending champion, received eight of the 12 first-place votes. Buena Vista is No. 2.

    The 8-man poll was interesting. Defending champion Caliche leads the way at No. 1 in the preseason, but four different teams received first-place votes — including Dayspring Christian at No. 3, which got three top votes. Caliche and No. 2 Norwood each got two first-place votes, and Granada got one.

    Fleming got four first-place votes to lead the 6-man ranking, while No. 2 Eads and No. 3 Arickaree/Woodlin each received one. Arickaree/Woodlin won last season’s title.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    The 2015 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues and coaches, and then a vote of coaches. Players had to be first-team all-league in order to be on the all-state ballot.

    Players and coaches of the year were also selected by a vote of the coaches.

  • Dove Creek claims 1A baseball title in final act of resilience

    DENVER — He shook his catcher off in the bottom of the seventh inning, with the bases loaded, one strike away from winning a title.

    It was a moment born from dreams: Two strikes, two outs, in the final inning. And Colin Hobbs, a junior from Dove Creek, knew exactly what he wanted to do.

    “I like my curveball a lot,” Hobbs said on Friday night. “It’s my strikeout pitch so I like to throw it with two strikes.”

    “I gave him the fastball,” said Alex Ogas, Hobbs’ catcher, “and he shook his head and he just started laughing. I knew, right then. Once I gave him the signal, I knew.”

    Hobbs got Granada’s Jose Rodriges to strike out swinging. Moments later, he, Ogas and the rest of the Dove Creek Bulldogs were throwing their gloves into the crisp Denver air. They’d won the Class 1A baseball title, defeating Granada 8-5 at All-City Field.

    “They hung tight,” said Curtis Garver, Dove Creek’s coach.

    See, Dove Creek had a singular focus this season. It was almost exactly one year ago to the day that they’d lost the 1A title game to Caliche, and watched another team throw their gloves into the air.

    As the 2015 season opened, they struggled somewhat, starting 1-4, and finishing the regular season 8-11.

    “All throughout the season, we took our lumps, we took our lumps, and we identified what was wrong with our game,” Ogas said. “We were able to adapt it right at the beginning of the playoffs.”

    Dove Creek qualified for the regional bracket by placing second in District 1, then beat Holly and Community Christian to return to the title game.

    “We were a little sour after last year,” Garver said. “We wanted to come back and prove that we belonged here.”

    Saturday was a day some in Dove Creek thought might never come — not only because of the road the Bulldogs took to get here, but because of multiple reschedules and headaches due to weather. It was only on Thursday that the title game was formally rescheduled for Saturday night.

    The uncertainly didn’t faze Dove Creek one bit.

    “This is the state championship, so everybody was really focused,” Ogas said. “It was really easy for us to stay prepared. It didn’t take too much out of us. It really didn’t. We were mostly scared about it raining today.”

    “We were ready all day long,” said Dove Creek’s Jordan Ernst.

    The rain, mercifully, held off on Saturday. And Dove Creek soon seized control of the title game. The Bulldogs grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, and just kept adding to it. Soon, it was 7-0 going to the bottom of sixth.

    Ernst, Dove Creek’s star who earlier this season threw a five-inning perfect game in which he struck out every batter he faced, was magnificent to that point. He didn’t allow a hit until the bottom of the fourth, and ended up with eight strikeouts in five-plus innings of work.

    But, in the sixth, Granada loaded the bases, and finally pushed a run across on a walk.

    Dove Creek turned to Hobbs, who has been their go-to reliever this season. He struck out the first two batters he faced, but then walked two others. It was 7-3 at that point.

    Then, Granada’s Davey Reyez lined a ball that seemed destined for the right-center gap, but Dove Creek second baseman Kyle Schultz snared the liner to end the threat.

    The Bulldogs added a run in the top of the seventh, but Granada would not go quietly into the night. The Bobcats got one back in the bottom half, then loaded the bases. Soon, the score was 8-5 with just one out.

    With Granada’s Dalton Harris up, Hobbs threw a breaking ball in the dirt, but Ogas made a great block to keep it in front of him — and keep the runners where they stood. Hobbs went on to strike Harris out.

    With two outs, and the title in sight, Hobbs quickly got two strikes on Rodriges. It was then that Ogas called for the fastball, which, of course, Hobbs shook off. He threw his curveball instead. And ended the game.

    Hobbs was asked afterward if the two bases-loaded jams from which he escaped got to him. “A little bit,” he said. “It was not too bad.” Then he added with a wry smile, “I got out of them.”

    The title is Dove Creek’s third. The school also won Class A (West) championships in 1977 and 1975 when it was then Dolores County. But this one was sweeter than most because of the loss last year.

    “We’ve been fighting through — even like Little League, we’ve been going to the state tournaments, and we always come up short,” Ernst said. “We finally made it. After probably 10 years, we finally made it to the top.”

    DENVER — Dove Creek beat Granada 8-5 to win the Class 1A baseball championship on Saturday.

  • 1A baseball championship game scheduled for Saturday

    DENVER — The Class 1A baseball championship game, which had been postponed from its original date on Thursday, will now be played on Saturday.

    The game will be at 6 p.m. at All-City Field in Denver, according to CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann, who oversees baseball.

    Dove Creek and Granada will vie for the title. The two teams came to an agreement to reschedule the game to Saturday.

    The 6 p.m. time was selected, in part, to allow Granada’s track athletes to complete their events at the state track and field championships. The start time is somewhat fluid, Borgmann said, to allow those Granada athletes time to finish at track and make the 20-minute drive from Jeffco Stadium to All-City. 

    Of course, weather may be an issue. In the event it does interfere, the game will be reevaluated at that point.

    Quarterfinal: Granada jumped out to a 8-0 lead thanks to a flurry of Fleming errors. The Wildcats were able to cut the lead to 10-7, but their offense sputtered the rest of the way out, sending the Bobcats into the semifinals.

    Nucla 13, Stratton/Liberty 8

    Quarterfinal: Nucla was able to come out on top of the offensive onslaught for a chance to meet Granada in the 1A semifinals.

    Semifinal: After two weather delays, Granada was able to take a 10-5 lead, putting them into the 1A state championship game.

    Quarterfinal: In the pitchers’ duel of the day, Dove Creek came away with the one-run win to advance to the 1A semifinals.

    Community Christian 17, Peetz 0

    Quarterfinal: Community Christian allowed one hit as their offense came alive to give them the 17-0 win over Peetz.

    The title game between Dove Creek and Granada does not yet have a set date, location or time because it was originally postponed by poor weather. That will be announced in the coming days.

  • Wheat Ridge takes over as 4A baseball’s No. 1 team

    Wheat Ridge made a huge leap in taking over the top spot in the Class 4A baseball poll this week.

    The Famers, No. 6 a week ago, beat then-No. 1 D’Evelyn, No. 5 Green Mountain, and No. 2 Evergreen as part of a 4-0 run last week.

    They received five of the 12 first-place votes in CHSAANow.com’s poll, but it was the most any team got this week. Wheat Ridge also totalled 105 points, placing them just ahead of D’Evelyn, which got four first-place votes and 101 points.

    Lewis-Palmer, which received two first-place tallies, is No. 3 in 4A this week. Evergreen dropped to No. 4, and Pueblo West completes the top-five.

    The 4A poll added two newcomers: No. 6 Erie and No. 7 Palisade.

    Green Mountain (No. 8), Ponderosa (No. 9) and Montrose (No. 10) round out the 4A poll.

    The 5A ranking also saw a lot of change this week.

    Cherokee Trail led three newcomers at No. 7 in the poll. Pine Creek (No. 9) and Legend (No. 10) also joined.

    Rocky Mountain stayed atop the ranking with 11 of the 15 first-place votes.

    The three other No. 1s also remained the same: Eaton (3A), Rye (2A) and Eads (1A).

    Neither the 3A poll, nor 1A poll, had any newcomers this week. 2A added Swink (No. 9).

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

    These will serve as the final polls of the season, as 1A’s regular season ended last Saturday, 2A’s is set to close this Saturday, and 3A, 4A, and 5A will end next Tuesday.

    D’Evelyn and Rye took over atop their respective baseball rankings on Monday.

    D’Evelyn is 13-0 and now heads the Class 4A poll from CHSAANow.com after receiving nine of the 12 first-place votes and totalling 106 points, well ahead of No. 2 Evergreen’s 86 points.

    Former No. 1 Green Mountain was upset by Valor Christian last week, and fell to fifth. Valor Christian joined the 4A poll at No. 9 this week.

    Rye (10-0), meanwhile, is the new No. 1 in 2A after last week’s No. 1 Resurrection Christian lost to Brush, the No. 7 team in 3A at the time.

    That ranking added No. 10 Kiowa (7-3).

    In 5A, Fruita Monument’s rise up the ranking continued. The Wildcats, who are now 17-0, bumped up two spots to No. 4. Included in last week’s 3-0 record was a win over Montrose, which was ranked No. 8 in 4A at the time.

    Rocky Mountain continued to lead the 5A poll, and got 11 of the 15 first-place votes. Mountain Vista also held firm at No. 2.

    Behind them, Cherry Creek pushed up to No. 3, then Fruita sits fourth and Rock Canyon rounds out the top five.

    Fairview dropped to No. 6 and Mullen moved up to No. 7. Monarch is eighth, Denver East is ninth and Grandview is tenth.

    The Nos. 1 teams in 3A (Eaton) and 1A (Eads) both held on to their respective top spots this week.

    Sterling (No. 9) joined the 3A poll, while 1A added Nucla (No. 8).

  • Rock Canyon leads host of new teams in baseball rankings

    Three teams joined the Class 5A baseball rankings this week, and no rise was greater than that of Rock Canyon, which now finds itself in the No. 5 spot.

    The Jaguars (11-1) went 3-0 last week, and led a host of new teams to CHSAANow.com baseball polls. Also joining in 5A were No. 9 Mullen (7-3) and No. 10 Denver East (11-1).

    Rock Canyon beat then-No. 8 ThunderRidge and then-No. 9 Heritage last week. The Jaguars are off to their best start since opening 8-0 in 2009-10.

    Mullen, meanwhile, is unbeaten against in-state teams at 7-0. And Denver East’s lone loss came to Rock Canyon in its opener, 9-7, on March 12.

    Rocky Mountain remained atop the 5A poll, and Mountain Vista stayed in No. 2. Fairview bumped up to No. 3, jumping just ahead of Cherry Creek, which is now No. 4.

    Fruita Monument is up one spot to No. 7 and Grandview is No. 8.

    The other No. 1 teams in each classification also remained the same. Those are Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Eads (1A).

    The 4A poll added No. 7 Ponderosa, and 3A has two newcomers — Valley (No. 9) and St. Mary’s (No. 10).

    The 2A ranking added No. 8 McClave/Wiley, as well as No. 10 Yuma.

    There are four new teams in this week’s 1A poll: No. 5 Primero, No. 6 Fleming, No. 7 Springfield and No. 10 Antonito.
