  • Matchup between 6-Man No. 3 Kit Carson and No. 5 Arickaree/Woodlin highlights Week 3 games on the radio

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Week 3 of high school football in Colorado kicked off on Thursday night, but Friday’s slate of games might be the best of the year so far.

Among games that will be featured by CHSAANow.com and its various media partners, radio stations across the state will feature plenty of intriguing matchups.

(If any stations are interested in featuring their games in this weekly post, please send an email to dmohrmann@chsaa.org)

    6-man: (3) Kit Carson at (5) Arickaree/Woodlin

    Game time: 7 p.m. kick.

    Station: KAT Country 98.3 FM

    On the call: Marc Romero

Romero on the matchup: “Two teams that return a ton of experience from 2017. Arickaree/Woodlin doesn’t have any stats posted, but the names are basically the same for a group that has experience playing together in all sports. Kit Carson showed just how much offense they have (nearly 1200 returning passing yards and over 1900 rushing yards return from 2017) with the 73 points posted in week one.”

4A: Grand Junction Central at Grand Junction

    Game time: 7 p.m. kick

    Station: The Team 1340

On the call: Jim Davis (Play by Play), Nate Primrose (Color)

Davis on the matchup: “The Tigers are coming off a 31-12 loss at Montrose, with the Warriors beating previously 6th ranked Fruita Monument 13-9. It was Central’s first win against the Wildcats since 2009. Grand Junction beat Central last year 21-0.”

Hear the game on 1340 The TEAM, 102.1 Delta, 100.1 Montrose and streaming at theteam1340.com.

    Rocky Ford at Lamar

    Game time: 7 p.m. kick

    Station: KLMR 920

    On the call: Ethan Denton

Denton on the matchup: “Both teams are coming off losses in their opener. The host Savages look to take care of the ball much better, as four first-half turnovers doomed them at Limon last Friday. Rocky Ford’s spread offense had a hard time getting started two weeks ago against Florence and so this game may simply come down to who executes better for four quarters. Whoever can control field position will be in a good position to win.”

Listen to the game on 920 KLMR or network1sports.com

    4A: (3) Windsor at Ponderosa

    Game time: 7 p.m.

    Station: Orange and Blue 760

On the call: Chad Andrus (Play by play), Matt McChesney (Color)

Coloradoan’s Kevin Lytle on the matchup: “Windsor will continue to pound the run game like always. They had six different guys carry the ball last week. Ponderosa has to break through a Windsor defense that completely shut down Vista Ridge a week ago.”

Hear the game on Orange and Blue 760 or through their stream via iHeartRadio.

    2A: Weld Central at University

    Game time: 7 p.m.

    Station: 1310 KFKA

On the call: Clark Johnson (Play by play), Mike Danson (Color)

Preps director Tanner Schwindt on the matchup: “Weld Central will be looking to bounce back after a tough opening loss against Englewood and look to find a quarterback in the process. University on the other hand is 1-1 and if they want to try and put together back to back wins they need to rely on that running game and an aggressive pass rush.”

The first full week of football games is in full swing for Friday night. Contests across the state will have implications not just for this week, but a playoff picture that will evolve over the course of the season.

There are several games that can be heard through various radio broadcasts in Colorado.

    Station: KLMR 920

    On the call: Ethan Denton

Denton on the matchup: “The young Savages may have their hands full tonight on the road against the Badgers, who return QB Cannan Bennett and RB Hauk Hubbard who hope lead Limon to a deep playoff run. Lamar sophomore QB Zane Rankin will make his first start against a Badger defense which posted six shutouts in 2017.”

    Game time: 7 p.m. kick.

    Station: The Team 1340

On the call: Greg Wentzel (Play by Play), Reo Van Gilder (Color)

Van Gilder on the matchup: “Montrose ran for 159 yards on 41 carries against Grand Junction Central last week, and found some success through the air. Sophomore quarterback Keegan Goodwin showed nice touch and good awareness in his first varsity start. Grand Junction’s AJ Mariz found some success in his first start, as well. Grand Junction’s defense kept stopping Palmer on fourth down, giving Mariz and running back Carson Loveridge short fields all day. Two running teams and physical defenses in this one, should be a smash-mouth affair.”

Preps director Tanner Schwindt on the matchup: “For Eaton and Sterling it’ll be the third matchup in the last two years for the two teams but both look remarkably different. It will be more of a feeling out process for Eaton and a bounce back week for Sterling.”
