  • ThunderRidge, Sand Creek among No. 1 teams in preseason girls basketball rankings

Three teams which finished second last season now open this season as No. 1 in their respective classification.

ThunderRidge, Sand Creek, Manitou Springs, Yuma and Idalia are the preseason No. 1 teams in CHSAANow.com’s girls basketball rankings, which were released on Friday. Of those, ThunderRidge, Sand Creek and Yuma finished as runner-up in 2014-15. Idalia is the lone defending champion of the bunch.

ThunderRidge, led by new coach Matt Asik and Wyoming commit Taylor Rusk, received 13 of the 17 first-place votes to lead the Class 5A poll. The Grizzlies return four of their five leading scorers, including Rusk, a first-team all-state pick in 5A last season.

Grandview and super junior Michaela Onyenwere, also a first-team all-state pick, are No. 2 in the preseason. The Wolves received two first-place votes.

Highlands Ranch and its trio of Division I commits are third, while defending champion Broomfield is fourth. Lakewood rounds out the top-5.

Also ranked in 5A’s preseason top-10 are No. 6 Cherry Creek, No. 7 Ralston Valley, No. 8 Monarch, No. 9 Fossil Ridge and No. 10 Regis Jesuit.

    Sand Creek Longmont girls basketball
Sand Creek is No. 1 in Class 4A. (Kai Casey/CHSAANow.com)

In 4A, Sand Creek leads the way with 13 of the 19 first-place votes. The Scorpions, who lost to Valor Christian in last season’s 4A title game, return their top five leading scorers. That includes Division I commits Liah Davis and Oliana Squires. Both girls earned all-state recognition last season, with Squires making the first team.

Defending champion Valor Christian is second, with three first-place votes, and D’Evelyn is No. 3. Longmont and Holy Family round out the top-5.

Manitou Springs was a Final 4 team a season ago. On Friday, the Mustangs received five of the 11 first-place votes to lead 3A’s preseason rankings. All nine girls return from last season’s varsity roster, including first-team all-state pick Shelby Megyeri.

Sterling, last season’s 3A runner-up, is second, and defending champion Pagosa Springs is No. 3. Eaton and Lutheran round out the top 5.

Yuma heads the preseason 2A poll with eight of the 10 first-place votes. The team graduated just two seniors and returns more than 80 percent of its offense. Logan Hixon was a first-team all-state pick in 2014-15.

Defending champion Akron is No. 3 to begin the year, just behind No. 2 Paonia.

In 1A, the reigning champ Idalia received nine of 10 first-place votes to lead the preseason ranking. The Wolves are led by returning first-team all-state pick Reagan Shaffer. Their top three scorers are back.

Kit Carson is No. 2, and last season’s runner-up, Sangre de Cristo, is No. 3.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • No. 1 Resurrection Christian volleyball sweeps Liberty Common, looking toward postseason

    Resurrection Christian volleyball
    (Aislyn Carrillo/CHSAANow.com)

FORT COLLINS — Coming off an emotional match on Monday night against University, Resurrection Christian volleyball coach Caleb Howard was unsure about how his team would perform Tuesday.

“It would have been easy to have a big emotional let down, but they played very well,” Howard said.

Resurrection Christian, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, swept Liberty Common on their home court in three quick sets with the scores of 21-12, 25-17 and 25-12.

The Cougars (17-1 overall, 11-0 league) are now one step closer to taking the conference title and playing in the 2A state tournament.

Liberty Common (7-9 overall, 5-6 league) went into the match against Resurrection Christian feeling “intimidated” because of the Cougars’ near-perfect record — a record that only improved tonight with the Cougars taking home yet another win.

The Eagles’ nerves seemed to get the best of them during the first set. The Cougars held a consistent lead on them throughout.

“I think we got inside of our heads and we just started to shut down,” said Liberty coach Jessica Jordan. “As soon as we started making one or two mistakes, they stopped playing as team.”

Liberty Common slowly but surely started to improve their play during the second set. They managed to stay within a two-point margin through the first five points scored at the beginning, the Cougars offense and defense took over the remainder of the set until the final point.

At 24-12, the Eagles held the Cougars, going on a five-point run to cut the lead to 24-17. Unfortunately for the Eagles, it was too late. A service error from Liberty Common finished off the set and at this point, the Cougars had two sets under their belt.

Resurrection’s diverse offense is something that they are very grateful for.

“We don’t have one superstar, we have lots of girls who can step up and play well,” said Howard of his talented athletes.

Set three was the most intense set of this match. The Eagles came in strong, fighting to take the set.

The match as tied up at 6 and stayed within a four-point margin up until Resurrection Christian’s defense put up a wall, blocking an attempted spike from the Eagles and upping their score 16-11. Liberty Common was able to score only one more point for the duration of the match.

Cougar Kyra Zuhlke outrageous play terminated the match and the excitement from Resurrection Christian’s team filled the gymnasium.

The Cougars have only one more match left in the regular season. After taking the 2A volleyball state title the past two years in a row, the Cougars have high expectations for themselves going into this year’s tournament.

“I feel like we can possibly take it again this year.” Zuhlke said. “Of we just work our hardest and keep practicing, I feel like we will go really far.”

Howard is very impressed with how his team is playing. He recognizes that this season has been a process for his team but they are “peaking at the right time,” he said — especially with postseason coming up in the next few weeks.

The Niwot Cougars are making sure they aren’t forgotten when it comes to action on the pitch.

With impressive wins over Greeley West and Skyline, the Cougars made the leap from No. 6 to No. 2 in this week’s Class 4A CHSAANow.com soccer rankings.

They weren’t able to over take The Classical Academy, who held on to the No. 1 spot after claiming it last week.

Skyline was the lone addition to the 4A polls this week, coming in at No. 10. At 12-0-1, the Wolverines even earned a first-place vote this week.

There were no new teams that made their way into this week’s 5A poll. Broomfield remains the No. 1 team in the rankings and Cherry Creek made the biggest movement, jumping two spots from No. 10 to No. 8.

Kent Denver is still the unanimous No. 1 team in 3A. Vail Mountain made the jump from No. 4 to No. 2 thanks to wins over Moffat County and Colorado Rocky Mountain.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. These are the final boys soccer rankings of the season with the state brackets due to be released next Sunday.

  • No. 3 Liberty Common boys soccer shuts out league rival Heritage Christian

    Liberty Common boys soccer
    (Aislyn Carrillo/CHSAANow.com)

FORT COLLINS — Not only are Liberty Common and Heritage Christian rival schools, but coming from the same area, they are also companions.

With both teams coming in to Thursday’s match undefeated in league play, it was clear that one team was going to leave upset. It wouldn’t be CHSAANow.com’s No. 3-ranked Liberty Common as they came away with the 3-0 victory.

“We always cheer for them when we are not playing them,” said Liberty Common coach Dan Knab. “But now that were playing them, we have to beat them.”

Senior Rob Knab set the tone for the first half, making two of the three goals scored during the match. As Liberty Common’s (12-0-1 overall, 7-0 3A Region 7) leading scorer of the season, fans and spectators were not expecting anything less of him.

“Rob’s just a gladiator,” one Eagles fan said. “He’s been scoring goals like crazy.”

This season alone, Knab has scored 21 of Liberty’s 64 goals.

According to Heritage Christian coach David Young, his team had a hard time adjusting to Knab early on in the match. They played slow on defense and gave up two goals.

Going into the second half, Heritage came together as a team and played aggressive. Compared to the first half, they had more possession over the ball and communicated to each other much better, only letting Caleb Baptista score one more goal for Liberty Common. Young is confident that his team always is putting forward their full effort and that is all he can ask for as a coach.

“Even down 3-0, I still felt like they were working their hardest and trying their best,” said Young.

Young wanted his team to finish opportunities and give it their all; they completed one of the two tasks. According to Young, Liberty Common’s defense never gave Heritage a chance to even create opportunities. They shut Heritage’s offense down, giving them less than a handful of quality shots on goal throughout the match.

Liberty Common coach Dan Knab gives credit to the assistant coaches and bench players who were all well prepared for the game. The assistant coaches led their warm-up and set them up for success. Toward the end of the match Dan Knab put his bench players in and they didn’t skip a beat.

The coaches from both teams were anticipating an intense match and that is exactly what came of it. Fans from both schools cheered on their teams until the board struck zero.

After today’s victory, Liberty Common is now one step closer to taking the league title. Dan Knab recognized that his team have already played the toughest teams in the league and have come out on top.

Even though Heritage Christian’s undefeated record no longer stands, they still have a positive mindset going into its next couple matches. With final league games and the Class 3A state playoffs coming up so soon, both teams know what they need to do in order to be successful.

Going into the next two games against Denver Christian and Dawson, Young plans on working on his team’s ability to create and finish opportunities in goal.

“Those will be our big tests and determine if we make it in to playoffs this year,” said Young.

  • Boys soccer rankings: The Classical Academy on top of 4A

The Classical Academy has taken over the top spot of the Class 4A CHSAANow.com soccer rankings. Broomfield and Kent Denver held on to their respective No. 1 positions in 5A and 3A.

The Titans came into the season with more returning talent than any team in 4A and have had their sights set on a state championship since day one. It appears that an early-season loss to Cheyenne Mountain hasn’t fazed them and they are now regarded as the top team in the state.

Also in 4A, Battle Mountain joined the rankings at No. 7 and Skyline made a jump from No. 5 to No. 2.

In 5A, Monarch (No. 6) and Cherry Creek (No. 10) join the rankings this week. Fairview made an impress jump from No. 6 to No. 2 and are barking at the heels of their area rival, Broomfield, for the top spot.

DSST-Stapleton and Fountain Valley are both back in the 3A top 10 after dropping out in recent weeks.

KIPP, Liberty Common and Vail Mountain each jumped three spots to land at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

The girls soccer state tournament brackets were released on Sunday, and Mountain Vista, Evergreen, Colorado Academy and Vail Mountain each earned top overall seeds.

Vail Mountain leads the first-ever Class 2A field. That classification is playing for the first time this season.

The Gore Rangers are 13-1-0 this season with their lone loss coming to Denver Christian on March 27. Denver Christian (9-5-1) is the No. 4 seed. Front Range Christian is No. 2, Dawson is No. 3 and Colorado Springs School rounds out the top five.

The 2A field is comprised of 12 teams, with seeds Nos. 1-4 getting a first-round bye. The tournament begins play on Tuesday, with the championship May 19 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

See the full 2A bracket here.

In 5A, Mountain Vista has earned the top overall seed. The Golden Eagles (13-2-0) will host No. 32 Rangeview to begin the 32-team tournament on Tuesday.

Grandview is the No. 2 seed, and is followed by No. 3 ThunderRidge, No. 4 Broomfield and No. Pine Creek.

The 5A championship is also played at Dick’s, and is May 20.

Find the entire 5A bracket here.

Evergreen (14-1-0) heads the 4A field, which is also comprised of 32 teams. It opens with No. 32 seed Canon City.

Other top-5 seeds in 4A include The Classical Academy, Cheyenne Mountain, Battle Mountain and Windsor.

The 4A tournament begins play on Wednesday. It’s championship is May 20, also at Dick’s.

The full 4A bracket is here.

In 3A, Colorado Academy sits atop the bracket. That class is now playing a 24-team bracket following the addition of 2A.

It means the top eight seeds will all get a bye in the first round, which is slated for Friday. The 3A title game is May 19 at Dick’s.

Teams with first-round byes, besides CA, include No. 2 The Academy, No. 3 Jefferson Academy, No. 4 Kent Denver, No. 5 Peak to Peak, No. 6 Frontier Academy, No. 7 Liberty Common and No. 8 Middle Park.
