Regis Jesuit, Dawson lead the way in boys state lacrosse brackets

Regis Jesuit heads the field as the No. 1 seed in 5A boys lacrosse. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com) The teams that were seen as the top dogs at the end of the boys lacrosse regular season will hold on to their distinctions in the 2016 state tournament.
Regis Jesuit earned the No. 1 overall seed in the Class 5A boys lacrosse bracket that was released Monday morning. Dawson assumes the top spot in the 4A bracket.
Defending 5A champion Cherry Creek lands at No. 4 with Mountain Vista and Arapahoe taking the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, respectively.
The Bruins, Raiders and Golden Eagles all advanced to last year’s Final 4. Kent Denver, the other Final 4 team from 2015, lands at No. 14 this year.
This year’s bracket sees three fresh faces as Palmer (No. 10), Chaparral (No. 13) and Legend (No. 16) all made it into this year’s tournament after failing to qualify last year.
First round games for the 2016 5A state lacrosse tournament will be played on Wednesday.

Dawson is the No. 1 seed in the 4A field. (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com) After starting this season 0-3 Valor Christian won 11 of their final 12 games to play up to the No. 2 seed. Following the Eagles are Conifer at No. 3, Windsor and No. 4 and Cheyenne Mountain at No. 5.
Defending champion Aspen lands at No. 11 and will face No. 6 Air Academy for its first round game.
Dawson School, Valor Christian and Cheyenne Mountain all joined Aspen in last year’s semifinals and with the layout of the bracket, it’s possible for all those teams to return to that point.
Like in 5A, there are three teams in this year’s bracket that did not qualify in 2015. Golden lands at No. 7, St. Mary’s is No. 8 and Vail Mountain is the No. 14 team.
First round games for the 4A tournament will be played on Tuesday.

Girls soccer rankings: New No. 1 teams in 3A, 4A
An overtime win over Colorado Academy was good enough to make Kent Denver the new No. 1 team in the Class 3A CHSAANow.com girls soccer rankings.
The Sun Devils dropped a game over the weekend to Smoky Hill, but in the voters’ eyes they look to be the top team after taking down the Mustangs in a head-to-head showdown.
Fountain Valley and Sterling are starting to make some noise amongst the ranks and as a result, broke into the top 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 respectively.
There was also a new No. 1 team atop the 4A rankings as Lewis-Palmer assumes the top spot, edging out league foe Cheyenne Mountain.
Ironically, it was the Indians who helped the Rangers claim that spot as they won a 4-3 thriller over former No. 1 Valor Christian on Saturday night.

Lewis-Palmer is the new No. 1 team in 4A girls soccer. (Caden Colson/CadenColsonPhotography.com) Cheyenne Mountain and Lewis-Palmer will square off Wednesday night at Don Breese Stadium.
The only newcomer in this week’s 4A poll was Littleton at No. 10.
Grandview still has a firm hold on the top spot in the 5A rankings, easily fending off No. 2 Mountain Vista.
Rock Canyon made a sizable jump this week, landing at No. 5 which is up five spots from their No. 10 ranking a week ago.
The 5A poll welcomes two new teams this week as Rocky Mountain comes in at No. 8 and ThunderRidge rounding out the poll at No. 10.
Vail Mountain is still the No. 1 team in 2A as the entire poll itself went unchanged from a week ago.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

Denver East freshman Arria Minor steals the show at track’s Mullen Invite

(Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com) DENVER — Talk about a high school debut.
Arria Minor, a freshman at Denver East, opened her prep track and field career for the Angels in absolute style this weekend — three meet records, two in individual events (100- and 200-meter dashes), and some of the nation’s best times at the prestigious Mullen Invitational on Saturday.
Minor’s performance at Mullen highlighted an astonishing weekend, which included a pair of wins in the 100 (11.78) and 400 (55.20) at the Thomas Jefferson Twilight meet on Friday, as well.
“Arria had a really incredible weekend,” Denver East coach Steve Kiper said. “It was her first weekend to get out and run with the team. We wanted to get out and get some baseline times. We did a lot of hard training over the last couple of weeks.”
At the Mullen Invite, traditionally one of Colorado’s most elite track and field events, Minor pulled away from competitive fields in both the 100 (11.64) and the 200 (23.65), and she sits at No. 1 in Colorado for all classifications in both. On top of that, after just one weekend of racing, she boasts top three freshman times nationally in the 100, 200 and 400.

Denver East freshman Arria Minor. (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com) “Arria is a super competitor,” Kiper added. “She’ll compete with boys. She’ll compete with anybody who will line up with her. That’s the kind of person and athlete she is, but it’s in a fun way. She has a really good spirit toward her friends and teammates and she’s very motivated.”
Minor also ran a leg on Denver East’s record-setting 400-meter relay that cruised to a 47.76.
“I am really happy. I didn’t think I could do it, but I just listened to my coaches,” Minor said of the times she ran Saturday.
Nonetheless, the freshman is keeping things in perspective as well.
“I know all the time I have to stay humble,” she said. “I want to make sure I always keep my team first.”
While there were a lot of other top-flight performances at Mullen, Andrea Willis has a way of standing out. The senior pole vaulter from The Classical Academy broke the all-classification record for the third time this spring while clearing 13-8. She even attempted 14-0, fell just short, but ended up settling nicely into second in the nation in the event. Her sister Erika (11-6), a sophomore, was the runner-up at Mullen.
Chantae Steele, a teammate of Willis’, won the 800 in 2:14.72 and ranks as the No. 1 freshman in America. A first-year tandem of Anna Shults (11:16) and Quinn McConnell (11:18) from Peak to Peak swept the top two places of the 3,200. Zoe Gilbertson, a junior for Mountain Range, won the 100 hurdles (13.84) and 300 hurdles (43.26), while also placing third in the 100-meter dash (12.27).
Boys winners on the day included Noah Mcghee of Littleton in the 100 (10.68), Marcus Quere of Loveland in the 800 (1:56.61), Gift Chinda of Thompson Valley in the triple jump (44-05.5), Jonathan Penrose of Broomfield in the 300 hurdles (38.74) and Adam Dawson of Lutheran in the discus throw (171-03.5).

Littleton boys soccer edges Harrison in 4A playoff opener

(Andre Lyseight/CHSAANow.com) LITTLETON — The opening round of the Class 4A soccer playoffs played out exactly like a playoff matchup between two good teams should, physical and low scoring.
Littleton senior forward Hamadi Ali Abid lead the way by scoring the first and only goal of the game in the first half to help the No. 7 Lions come away with a win 1-0 over No. 26 Harrison.
“I think we played great,” Abid said. “The first ten minutes we kind of needed to sort them out and see how their game style is and figure out how to combat that. But second half we absolutely killed it. I was very happy with the boys. The goal was a teamwork play and it was amazing. It’s been amazing playing with these boys”
The first half was slow for both teams as neither was able to take advantage of any opportunities in a matchup that became more physical as time expired. Littleton controlled the ball for much of the half and Abid had few early opportunities that indicated he would eventually score.
The Lions were able to get handful of shot attempts keeping Harrison goalie Mario Chamorro busy. Panthers midfielder Bryan Zamora displayed great ball control looking like he was the verge of scoring but was not able to get the ball in the net.
Abid scored on quick crossover move that setup a nice kick to the left of the net giving his team a 1-0 lead and the momentum just before halftime. Abid gave props to his teammate senior midfield Joe Director for the assist setting up the goal.
“Joe got the ball to me, he’s been doing that all season,” Abid said. “He is an amazing player I love that kid.”
In the second half Littleton controlled the ball in Harrison’s territory for majority of the time. Harrison showed resilience with great defense. Chamorro prevented Littleton from scoring numerous goals throughout the game.
Harrison was able to get clean shots at the Lions goal late in the game and got another late opportunity to score when Littleton goalie Theo Jensen mishandled the ball giving junior Francisco Silva a chance to attack that was prevent by Lions defense. Littleton couldn’t score again but it was capable of preventing Harrison from getting any goals to win the game.
“I think we played well,” said Littleton coach Pedja Vajzovic. “We moved the ball very well and we looked dangerous. We tried to be more patient but when we don’t score a goal the first 15 to 20 minutes then we start panicking pushing for that goal. Then we got one in the first half. I thought it was going to be easier second half. I thought we dominated and created the chances”
Harrison coach Chris Mason says his team played well and battled throughout the game just couldn’t turn their chances into points.
“This was a great season for us. We made tremendous jumps in the standings as well as just skill and playing as team. It really came down to getting the right people in the right places and getting our boys in the right set to play good team soccer”
The Lions will look to redeem themselves from last years loss in the quarterfinals against defending champion Air Academy next Tuesday in the second round of the playoffs. Air Academy beat Skyview in the first round.

Boys soccer rankings: Niwot moves up to No. 2 in 4A

Niwot is ranked No. 2 in 4A boys soccer this week. (Kai Casey/CHSAANow.com) The Niwot Cougars are making sure they aren’t forgotten when it comes to action on the pitch.
With impressive wins over Greeley West and Skyline, the Cougars made the leap from No. 6 to No. 2 in this week’s Class 4A CHSAANow.com soccer rankings.
They weren’t able to over take The Classical Academy, who held on to the No. 1 spot after claiming it last week.
Skyline was the lone addition to the 4A polls this week, coming in at No. 10. At 12-0-1, the Wolverines even earned a first-place vote this week.
There were no new teams that made their way into this week’s 5A poll. Broomfield remains the No. 1 team in the rankings and Cherry Creek made the biggest movement, jumping two spots from No. 10 to No. 8.
Kent Denver is still the unanimous No. 1 team in 3A. Vail Mountain made the jump from No. 4 to No. 2 thanks to wins over Moffat County and Colorado Rocky Mountain.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. These are the final boys soccer rankings of the season with the state brackets due to be released next Sunday.
