  • 5A, 4A, 3A and 2A state baseball brackets released

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

The state baseball brackets for Class 5A, 4A, 3A and 2A were released on Monday.

5A host sites are All-City Stadium and Metro State. 4A first-round games will be at All-Star Park and Machebeuf, and 3A is at Butch Butler and Niwot high school. 2A’s regional and state bracket will be played at Runyon Sports Complex in Pueblo.

In the 5A, 4A and 3A tournaments, the first game at each site will be played at 10 a.m., with the second played directly after. The winners of the first-round games will play at 3:00 p.m. at their original site.

There are no seeds in the 3A-5A tournaments, and first-round matchups are predetermined based upon the region each team won last weekend.

After breezing through the regional round with two run-rule wins, Legend will play Broomfield in 5A’s first round at Metro State.

It’s Mountain Vista vs. Dakota Ridge in the second game of the day at Metro State. Dakota Ridge upset Mountain Range and Highlands Ranch in the regional rounds, and will be looking to shake things up further in the state tournament.

Cherry Creek and Legacy will face off at All-City Stadium.

Rocky Mountain and Rock Canyon play in the second game.

In 4A, Thompson Valley plays Golden in game one at All-Star Park. Evergreen and Air Academy follow in game two.

Both Golden and Evergreen were No. 4 seeds in the regional brackets. Thompson Valley upset undefeated Denver North to win Region 1.

Thomas Jefferson and Silver Creek kick things off at Machebeuf. Valor Christian and Pueblo West follow.

Defending 3A champion Faith Christian will play Valley in game two at Niwot HS.

Eaton and Salida play in game one.

Colorado Academy run-ruled its way into the state tournament. The Mustangs will play Lamar in the first game of the day at Butch Butler.

La Junta and Peak to Peak will play after Colorado Academy and Lamar.

Paonia grabbed the No. 1 seed in 2A. The Eagles will play Sargent in the first round.

The winner of the above game will play the winner of N0. 8 Hotchkiss and No. 9 Dayspring Christian Academy.

Peyton is the second seed and gets No. 15 Limon. Should Peyton win, they’ll get the winner of No. 7 Haxtun vs. No. 10 Lyons.

Sedgwick County and Front Range Christian are head to head in the first round after the Cougars landed in the No. 3 seed. No. 6 Holyoke and No. 11 Rocky Ford play to determine who gets the winner.

No. 4 County Line plays No. 13 Evangelical Christian, while No. 5 Burlington gets No. 12 Yuma.

Air Academy (No. 7) and Palisade (No. 9) are the two new teams to crack the 4A poll this week.

Three new teams made their way in the 5A rankings as Legend (No. 6), Legacy (No. 8) and Brighton (No. 10) have all impressed voters enough with the postseason right around the corner.

Lamar holds on to the No. 1 spot in 3A with Lutheran climbing up to No. 2.

Valley made a three-spot jump to come in at No. 4.

At No. 9 and No. 10 respectively, Delta and Resurrection Christian are the two newcomers to the 3A poll.

Paonia maintained its spot atop the 2A poll while Sedgwick County jumped a spot to get to No. 3.

At No. 8, Hotchkiss is two spots better than last week.

Front Range Christian joins the 2A poll at No. 10.

Holly remains the unanimous No. 1 team in 1A. Eads was able to jump a spot to No. 2, trading places with No. 3 Fleming.

  • No. 8 Lyons baseball clinches league with win over Dawson School

    lyons baseball team
    (Cannon Casey/CHSAANow.com)

LYONS — The resiliency of No. 8 Lyons baseball was once again on display.

It was shown in a 3-2 win over Highland in which the Lions scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. It was shown in an 8-7 extra-inning win over Fort Lupton after Lyons gave up the tying run in the bottom of the seventh.

And now, it was shown in an 8-4 win over Dawson School to clinch the Class 2A Mile High League title.

“That’s exactly what they’ve been doing all year,” Rosales said. “We have a bad inning and they come and get runs on us, we come back with a bigger inning.”

The Lions absorbed every blow that came at them on Tuesday and came back with a harder punch.

With the Lions leading 5-4 in the top of the sixth, Justin Lear walked the first two batters he faced. Then, he got down to business.

“He does that day in and day out. He comes in and cleans up for us at the end,” Lyons coach Ken Rosales said.  “I told him no more of those, my heart can’t take those.

Lear struck out five of the six batters he faced as Lyons went on to beat Dawson School 8-4.

“That’s kind of my thing: strikeouts. I get a lot of them,” Lear said. “So, when I have runners on base, I’m not worried too much because this season I’ve always pulled through. I’ve got that confidence.”

In the bottom of the sixth, Lear started a four-run inning with a double in the right-center gap after striking out three batters. Lear had a cushion and could cruise.

“I was just ready to shut it out. It was just me and my catcher,” Lear said. “That’s all that was in my mind, just throwing the baseball.”

Austen Clark started on the mound for Lyons and gave five strong, while going 2-4 with two runs batted in. Clark reached base in every at-bat.

“It felt good out there,” Clark said. “I was just trying to be me, stay relaxed out there and do my job.”

After a sloppy second inning that included two errors, a walk, a wild pitch and two runs all with two outs, Clark went out in the third and posted a 1-2-3 inning.

“We’re resilient. We don’t get too low,” Clark said. “We just fight every time. We’re a great team, we have great team chemistry, we believe in eachother and we have a lot of confidence.”

The Lions have a right to be confident. They are now 14-1 (9-0 league) and are set up for the top seed in district play.

“That’s a huge advantage for us,” Clark said. “Just a huge win that proves that we’re competitors.”

Lyons went out with a gameplan to go right after the Dawson hitters.

“The gameplan was to pitch to them. We knew they could hit,” Rosales said. “The whole thing was pitch to them and get out of the inning with little to no damage.”

But, the Lyons didn’t always execute on defense. All of Dawson’s runs resulted from errors.

“You know, we had those bad innings, but you have to have a short memory in baseball because the next play is coming at you right after that,” Rosales said.

The Lions executed Rosales’ words exactly to hold on and beat the Mustangs in a nail-biting Mile High League win.

  • Baseball rankings: Cherry Creek, Valor Christian move up to No. 1 spots

    Cherry Creek baseball team
    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Cherry Creek and Valor Christian are picking the right time to peak. After all, in hunt for a state baseball championship teams put more emphasis on how they’re playing in May, not in March.

In the last week of April, the Bruins and the Eagles have made their way into their respective top spots in the CHSAANow.com baseball rankings.

Cherry Creek takes nine of 12 first-place votes to come in as the new No. 1 in the Class 5A poll. The Bruins unseat Rock Canyon, which falls to No.2 after a 12-10 loss to Regis Jesuit last week.

The Raiders are just one of three new teams to crack the 5A top 10. Douglas County enters the poll this week at No. 7 and Broomfield, fresh off a shutout win over Mountain Range comes in at No. 9.

Valor Christian — the defending 4A champion — regains the top spot in that class, jumping up three spots from last week’s ranking.

The Eagles overtake No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain, which claimed the top spot a week ago.

    Kennedy Denver North baseball
    (Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)

Still undefeated, Denver North climbs a couple of spots to take the No. 4 position this week, grabbing a couple of first-place votes in the process.

Summit and Pueblo West are the two newcomers in the 4A poll, taking the No. 9 and No. 10 spots respectively.

Lamar remains the No. 1 team in the 3A rankings, but University was able to jump a spot to land at No. 2.

Peak to Peak (No. 5) and Colorado Academy (No. 6) each climbed two spots from last week’s poll.

There were no new teams in the 3A poll.

Paonia held its spot at the top of the 2A poll. Sedgwick County jumped a spot to No. 4 and County Line fell a spot to No. 5, but no other changes occurred in the 2A rankings.

Holly did not play a game last week and it didn’t effect anything in the least as the Wildcats are still No.1 in the rankings.

Fleming (No. 2) and Cheyenne Wells (No. 4) each jumped a spot from last week. Three new teams joined the 1A poll as Denver Jewish Day comes in at No. 6, Stratton/Liberty takes the No. 9 spot and Sierra Grande rounds out the poll at No. 10.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

  • Baseball rankings: Cheyenne Mountain takes over top spot in Class 4A

    Cheyenne Mountain Falcon baseball
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

It might be too early to say that Cheyenne Mountain is back at a championship level, but a 11-0 start to the season has certainly gotten the attention of voters across the state.

Fresh off a win over Falcon on Thursday and Canon City on Saturday, the Indians are the new No. 1 in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com baseball rankings.

The Indians only broke into the poll a week ago and after leaping over Northridge, Windsor and Ponderosa, they are looking closer and closer to being in championship contention once again.

Valor Christian made a decent jump this week, gaining three spots to land No. 4.

Silver Creek is the only team to join the poll, coming in at No. 9

    Lamar St. Mary's baseball
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Lamar regains the top spot in the 3A poll after being overtaken by league rival La Junta last week.

University gains some ground to come in at No. 3 as does Manitou Springs who jumps a spot to land at No. 5.

Eaton rejoins the top 10 this week, rounding out the 3A at No. 10.

In 5A, Rock Canyon holds on to the top spot in the poll. Mountain Range, however, made a four-spot jump to come in at No. 2.

Cherry Creek gets back into the top three, getting a few first-place votes in the process.

Fruita Monument (No. 8) and Legacy (No. 9) are the two newcomers to the 5A rankings.

Paonia held on to the top spot in the 2A poll, as did the top four overall teams from last week’s rankings.

Rocky Ford is two spots better this week at No. 7.

Lyons is the only new team in the 2A poll, coming at No. 9 this week.

Holly also held on to its No. 1 ranking, hanging on to the top spot in the 1A poll. Eads (No. 2) and Fleming (No. 3) also held on to their positions from a week ago.

At No. 8, Kiowa is new to this week’s top 10, as is Granada who rounds out the poll at No. 10.

  • All-state wrestling teams for 2016-17 season

The 2016-17 all-state wrestling teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created based upon results at the state meet. Coaches of the year were selected by team performance at the state meet, as well.

Wrestlers of the year were determined by a formula which took the following information into account: season record; season winning percentage; type of wins at state (pin, tech fall, major decision); strength of a weight classification’s bracket; and multiple championships.

  • Rocky Ford wins 2A wrestling state championship

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER – Rocky Ford is back on top the Colorado wrestling world.

After entering Saturday sitting third in the race for the Class 2A team title, the Meloneers put together an emphatic performance that began in the fifth- and third-place matches and rolled all the way through the finals at Pepsi Center – running away with the state championship.

The team title is the second in three years for Rocky Ford, which won in 2015 and finished runner-up a year ago, just a single point behind Meeker – one of the two teams that had an edge over the Meloneers after day two of the three-day tournament.

It also marked the 12th wrestling championship in program history, now more than any other school among all classifications.

“That was an outstanding day. You couldn’t finish the day any better than they did,” coach Mike Jurney said. “They’ve been focused on that goal after losing by one point last year. Our theme all year was ‘Do more’, and they did today.”

Headlining Rocky Ford’s championship run was senior Jacob Rodriguez, who kicked the opening finals match off with a win by pin in the 106-pound weight class. Rodriguez, the No. 1 seed, pinned Chris McKenna of John Mall in 3:49, his longest-lasting duel in the state tournament by far.

Rodriguez had blazed through Thursday’s and Friday’s matches, posting wins by pin in 0:14, 0:45 and 1:01 – competing for only a collective two minutes before Saturday’s final. The individual title was his third-straight, all at 106 throughout his high-school career (finished third as a freshman in 2014).

“It feels pretty great knowing that I’m the second three-time state champ in Rocky Ford (history), and having everyone’s support – even the people watching at home,” Rodriguez said. “It took the rest that I had to try to force (McKenna’s) other shoulder down to get that fall for my team.”

The Meloneers continued to roll in the ensuing 113 match as sophomore Dillon Jaramillo won by 3-2 decision over Sergio Campos of Hotchkiss. Also bringing home an individual title for Rocky Ford was senior Cody Venem, who defeated top-ranked Marshall Ross of John Mall by 9-3 decision at 132.

Andreatta reclaims top spot on podium

There’s one match that will always haunt John Mall’s Jonathan Andreatta. It now stings a little less, however, thanks to his performance on Saturday.

After winning state titles his freshman (106 in 2014) and sophomore (113 in 2015) seasons, Andreatta’s vision for the prestigious four-peat was abruptly derailed last year when he lost in the 120 finals to Quinton Montague of Centauri, which now wrestles in 3A.

    His response? A revenge tour.

Andreatta rattled off 37 wins since that last defeat here a year ago, completing an undefeated run to reestablishing himself as a state champion (126) for his third-career title.

“It drove me every single day,” Andreatta said. “I kept that second-place medal, and it was hung up in the wrestling room. Whenever it got tough, I stared right at it. It was ‘don’t quit, otherwise this is going to happen again’.”

    Gaede also caps undefeated season

Limon junior Kaleb Gaede’s undefeated season came down to the wire as he found himself tied 4-4 with Norwood/Nucla’s Ethan Barnes with only seconds remaining.

He then flipped his opponent with only a second to spare, winning by pin in 5:59 to finish 37-0 overall and the 220 champion.

“It feels phenomenal. There’s no feeling that can beat this,” Gaede said. “I could care less about wins and losses. It’s whatever makes you better for this tournament. Undefeated doesn’t mean much. But that title means everything.”

    2A individual champions

Peyton senior Britton Holmes repeated as state champion with a 5-3 decision over Ignacio’s Ethan Appenzeller at 145. That’s back-to-back titles now for Holmes, who won at 138 in 2016.

Norwood/Nucla boasted three individual champions in senior Hayden Harris, who won at 152 by 4-3 decision; junior Aidan Dabal, whose pin in 3:09 claimed 160; and senior Trenton Armintrout at 170 by 1-0 decision.

John Mall had two champions as freshman Wesley Vanmatre won 120 by 6-3 decision and senior Jason Murphy claimed 195 by 3-2 decision.

Lyons junior Keegan Bean had a 7-5 victory at 182. Meeker senior Sheridan Harvey won 138 by 4-2, and Paonia senior Trver Smith closed the tournament out with a 4-3 decision win at 285.

Valor Christian returned to the Class 4A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings this week after narrowly beating Golden on Wednesday.

The Eagles, now 11-9, are ranked No. 10 this week.

The top three teams in 4A remained the same with No. 1 Pueblo South leading the pack. No. 2 Evergreen avoided an upset against Green Mountain to stay in the hunt.

The biggest mover of the rankings goes to Heritage Christian (16-0) in 1A. The school is up three spots in this week’s poll at No. 2. The Eagles defeated No. 8 Briggsdale to leap in the rankings behind No. 1 Kit Carson.

In 5A, Ralston Valley continued its 17 game win streak to keep pace at No. 3 in the rankings.

5A’s lone shakeup comes with Fossil Ridge and Fairview. Fossil Ridge, ranked No. 10 in last week’s poll, switched spots with Fairview at No. 7.

3A added Faith Christian at No. 10, and Eaton moved up two spots to No. 8.

Paonia stayed at No. 1 in 2A with minor shakeup beneath them.

  • Girls basketball rankings: George Washington joins 4A poll

    (Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)

George Washington is getting some well-deserved recognition in the Class 4A girls basketball rankings.

The Patriots have broken into the poll, landing at No. 10 this week. They are winners of nine of their last 10 games and sit at 14-2 this season.

Pueblo South (No. 1) and Evergreen (No. 2) remain in their spots from last week, but Pueblo West made a three-spot jump to No. 3 after beating No. 7 Pueblo East in overtime.

Grandview stays put at No. 1 in the 5A, along with the overall top six teams from last week.

No new teams broke into the 5A poll.

St. Mary’s is still firmly entrenched in the No. 1 spot in 3A. Sterling (No. 2), Liberty Common (No. 3) and Lamar (No. 4) also hold on to their positions from a week ago.

Olathe was the lone newcomer to the 3A rankings at No. 8.

Paonia is still No. 1 in 2A, but Yuma made a two-spot jump to come into the week as the new No. 2 team.

Simla breaks in this week, coming in at No. 8.

Jim Elliot is the only new team to make the 1A poll this week, coming in at No. 10. Kit Carson is still the top-ranked team and the top seven spots overall are unchanged from a week ago.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.
