  • Girls cross country state championships: Peak to Peak turns in huge effort to win 3A team race

COLORADO SPRINGS — Peak to Peak set out with a lofty goal.

The Pumas finished 1-2-3 in the 3A girls cross country race to go on to win the team title, lead by junior Quinn McConnell.

“We wanted to go 1-2-3. We wanted to make a statement like that,” McConnell said. “We’ve been doing it the past few races. I’m so happy for Tiana (Bradfield) who got it done.”

McConnell entered into the stadium ahead of her teammates, turning in a time of 18:31.6. Teammates Anna Shults and Bradfield followed.

“We’ve worked hard and wanted this all season,” McConnell said. “It was something that we knew we could do. We came here and executed it today.”

Peak to Peak, with three juniors and one freshman running, took the team title with 82 points.

“We have a lot left that we haven’t shown,” McConnell said. “We have some really big goals. This is just a stepping stone, and I’m super excited for what we can do.”

Steamboat Springs (101) and Classical Academy (120) rounded out the top three teams.

Nederland’s Helen Cross sets meet record in 2A

Nederland sophomore Helen Cross didn’t expect to be on top of the podium.

Cross, a sophomore, set a cross country state meet record for Class 2A with a time of 18:52 — beating the record by 55 seconds.

“I really wanted to do that,” Cross said. “I didn’t know that was going to happen this season. I was not expecting that at all. It’s exciting.”

Cross set out to keep up with Telluride senior Soleil Gaylord on the course.

“I thought I would keep up with Soleil,” Cross said. “I was going to try to stay behind her. I didn’t really have a set plan necessarily.”

She kept up with Gaylord, and then turned it up to take the win.

Gaylord finished behind her with a time of 19:09. In third, Cross’ teammate Sarah Davidson finished at 19:29.9 to give Nederland a boost in the team race.

“Sarah, she’s been trying to break 20:00 her whole career,” Cross said. “And now, she’s a senior and she just did it.”

The Panthers won the girls team title with a score of 24. Nederland edged out Paonia (30) and Lyons (33).

Battle Mountain grabs 4A team title behind Elizabeth Constien

Battle Mountain’s Elizabeth Constien and Palmer Ridge’s Isabella Prosceno were tied, unoficially, at the second mile of the 4A girls race.

Constien found something in her to push the last stretch of the race and take the 4A girls title.

“All I had to do was want it and pull ahead,” Constien said. “I managed to go just fast enough to put a gap on me and Isabella. She really made me push. I thought she was going to catch me, and I wanted to make sure that I didn’t get in my head.

“I basically sprinted for 800 meters as fast as I could go.”

It was her sister that gave her the motivation to keep going forward and give it her all.

“My sister was here today,” Constien said. “She stood right before the corner into the woods. She just reminded me how much I wanted this.”

In her senior year, Constien captured the individual and team titles for Battle Mountain.

“I can’t even believe it,” Constien said. “I wanted this so much and I didn’t think I was going to get it. I’m so happy.”

Palmer Ridge (157) finished in second ahead of third-place Durango (165).

Mountain Vista takes 5A team title with 1-2 finish

Mountain Vista took the top two spots in the 5A girls race to take the team title.

Sophomore Jenna Fitzsimmons came in first at 18:10.3, followed by her teammate Caroline Eck.

“My legs were burning, but I kept telling myself, ‘Do it for the team. Do it for the team,’” Fitzsimmons said. “I was saying it over and over again in my head.”

Fitzsimmons and Eck embraced next to the finish line.

“It was so good to have them next to me,” Fitzsimmons said. “To all be next to eachother, I don’t think I could have finished without them there.”

Fitzsimmons made a final push after the second mile to get out ahead and cross the finish line in first place.

“One of the hardest parts was, after the two mile, knowing how close you were,” Fitzsimmons. “You had to keep going and really put in the work.”

As a result of Fitzsimmons and Eck’s strong effort, Mountain Vista swept the boys and girls team titles. The girls had a score of 64.

Broomfield (92) came in second, while Rock Canyon (164) finished in third place.

  • No. 21 Steamboat Springs soccer secures playoff upset win over No. 12 Golden

ARVADA — The Anemoi — Greek wind gods — were with Steamboat Springs boys soccer team Wednesday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.

With a strong constant north/northwest wind at the No. 21-seeded Sailors’ back during the first half, Steamboat Springs senior Will Beruskens used the wind to score the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over No. 12 Golden in the opening round of the Class 4A boys soccer state tournament.

“I just kind of hit it as hard as I could and hoped for the best,” Beruskens said of the free kick that scored the eventual game-winning goal. “The point wasn’t necessarily to score, but to get it on goal.”

Beruskens took a free kick in the 15th minute of the first half near midfield. The shot road the wind and sailed just over the reach of Golden freshman goalie Brandon Shull. Shull yelled “keeper” just before the ball appeared to ride a gust that push the ball just beyond Shull’s reach.

“That was all him (Beruskens),” Steamboat Springs’ coach Rob Bohlmann said of the direct free kick. “He just made that decision on his own.”

The Sailors could have very well had a 3-0 lead at halftime if not for Shull. In the 12th minute, Shull made a save on a penalty kick by Steamboat Springs’ leading goal scorer Murphy Bohlmann. The junior and son of the Sailors’ head coach was a main focus for Golden.

Shull also made a diving save late in the first half to keep Steamboat’s lead at 1-0.

Bohlmann came in with 24 goals on the season. In every the junior forward scored the Sailors either won or tied the game. In Steamboat’s three losses — Battle Mountain, Glenwood Springs and Centaurus — Bohlmann didn’t find the back of the net. Tuesday’s victory was the first game all season the Sailors won without Bohlmann scoring a goal.

Golden (11-5 record) control possession and have several scoring chances in the final 40 minutes with the win at the Demons’ back.

“All those long throws. All those set pieces. We couldn’t find the net today,” Golden coach Luke Vanderglas said after the Demons failed to score in a game for only the second time all season. “It’s disappointing.”

Steamboat Springs were able to its fifth shutout win of the season and advance to play No. 5 The Classical Academy in Colorado Springs in the second round of the tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

“It was definitely hard,” Beruskens said of defending against the Demons and the wind in the second half. “We played calm and when in doubt we cleared it out.”

It was Golden’s first winning season since 2014 when the Demons went 10-6, but suffered a first-round loss at Montrose. The last playoff win for Golden was in 2013.

“I feel really bad for the seniors,” Vanderglas said as the season came to an end for the Demons. “They really put their heart and soul into this team and program. They left it on the field today. It just didn’t got our way unfortunately.”

  • Football roundup: Pueblo Central beats Glenwood Springs to snap 15-game losing streak

    (@ormanarmysports/Twitter)

Pueblo Central football snapped a 15-game losing streak on Saturday.

Nico Martin ran for three touchdowns as Pueblo Central beat Glenwood Springs 27-17.

The Wildcats grabbed a 21-7 lead in the second half, but the Demons were able to battle back and pull to within four points thanks to a 30-yard field goal.

But just as he had been the hero on offense all day, Martin shut down any hopes that Glenwood had of making a full comeback as he picked off a pass late in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

  • Girls XC preview: With new coach, Telluride aiming to continue string of titles

The last of Telluride’s historic mines closed in 1978, but the Miners have struck gold again.

With a cross country program founded in 2008, Telluride High has already won three state championships as a team in Class 2A. After just two seasons in the books, a contingent of Ty Williams (first), Colten Rogers (sixth) and Nathan Loomis (eighth) sealed Telluride’s initial title. The girls have taken home the ultimate prize the past two seasons.

Keith Hampton and his wife, Alicia, started the program with humble beginnings. Erin Thompson joined the first team as a senior, not entirely sure what she was getting herself into.

“It was silly, because when I started I was really not much of a runner,” said Thompson, now in her first season as the cross country coach. “I had done track a little bit, but cross country was something new and very intimidating to me. I just fell in love with it.”

Keith Hampton retired from coaching this summer after putting the finishing touches on an exceptional career—the Lady Miners took home the 2A state runner-up trophy in track and field despite not even having a home track. When he took the reins in 2006, Telluride was coming off a conference meet the previous season in which they failed to score a single point.

    My, how times have changed.

“They’ve been wonderful,” senior Soleil Gaylord said of Keith and Alicia Hampton. “We were really lucky to have them as coaches. They’ve led us to success. We also have a really cohesive, high morale team. Every day we come to practice ready to do our best and we push each other and are all positive with each other.”

Thompson, who will be joined by Lauren Ross and Lesley Terry on the staff, was the middle school track coach last season. She is thrilled at how far Telluride running has come.

“When we started we barely had enough girls and boys to even create a team and we were by no means fast,” she said with a laugh. “It was really a beginner group. The athletes we have running now are amazing.

“I’m just blown away by the heights they’ve reached. I never could’ve imagined our little cross country team in Telluride reaching the status they have.”

In a town well over 8,000 feet of elevation, the Miners have soared with a few individual state champions over the years as well. On the boys side, Ty Williams (2009-2011) was one of five males in state history to win at least three cross country titles. Keith Hampton’s daughter, Rachel, corralled a championship of her own in 2012 as a senior.

    (Courtesy of Telluride HS)

Gaylord could follow in their footsteps. The senior has earned seventh, third and fifth place showings at the state meet. A fall crown has proved elusive for her as an individual thus far, which is just about the only item missing in her trophy case.

The long-striding senior has competed at the World Mountain Running Championships for the U.S. Junior team twice, and even claimed the junior event at the 2017 Snowshoe National Championships (Bend, Ore.) and World Championships (Saranac Lake, N.Y.). She’s also a two-time defending state champion in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs.

“My heart is — more so than track and cross country even — in mountain running,” she said. “I’ve done it my whole life.”

All the training Gaylord does in the off-seasons should put her on the right foot in 2017. She is planning to continue her career with a collegiate program, but before she moves on the hope is that the Telluride girls can make it three in a row.

It won’t be easy, not when sidekick Maya Ordonez is missing from the lineup this fall. The junior placed seventh at the state cross country meet the past two seasons, but will be off to Spain in an exchange program for a year.

Nonetheless, Telluride has established a culture that brews success.

Only three runners, rather than five like the other classifications, count towards the point tally at the 2A state meet and Gaylord is confident returning state qualifier Isabelle Bennett and others can step up to replace Ordonez and Alyssa Pack, who graduated. St. Mary’s, Paonia and Lyons look to be serious classification contenders.

As for the highest division, two running legends in Brie Oakley of Grandview and Lauren Gregory of Fort Collins have graduated. Nonetheless, 5A remains a gauntlet with Broomfield (7th) and Mountain Vista (13th) returning lineups that are nearly intact from teams that placed well at the Nike National Championships last December in Portland, Oregon.

Broomfield, the two-time defending champions, nipped the Golden Eagles by seven points at state in 2016. They will be laden with seniors, while Mountain Vista has a youthful group bursting with talent. The Front Range League has conquered nine 5A championships in a row (Broomfield, Fort Collins, Monarch).

In 4A, Battle Mountain has everyone back and is favored to win their second straight team title. The Huskies’ Elizabeth Constien (runner-up) and Naomi Harding (third) are among a handful of harriers with individual championship hopes. Durango, Air Academy and Palmer Ridge are among the challengers.

Peak to Peak has perhaps one of the best one-two punches of any small school in America in juniors Quinn McConnell (one track title, one cross title) and Anna Shults (three track titles). It would be quite a feat to stop the Pumas from defending their 3A crown, but The Classical Academy and Steamboat Springs should feature excellent lineups as well.

GREELEY — Dawson senior Maggie Berry has has not lost a set all year, and she’s determined to keep that streak.

“It’s definitely been in my mind,” Berry said. “When you’re on a roll, if I lose a set it’s okay, but there’s a part of me that’s like, ‘I’ve got to keep up this streak.’ People normally tell me that I play like I’m in a rush to get somewhere.”

If Berry keeps the streak during the Class 3A state tournament, she will do something no player at Dawson has done before — win an individual girls tennis state championship.

“That would be amazing and very humbling to be the first champion,” Berry said. “I’d love to be that, so hopefully I can rest up and play my best tomorrow.”

Well, Berry is already doing something she herself has never done before.

“It’s going really well,” Berry said. “I’m really enjoying being here with the team and having their support and supporting them. Everyone that I’ve played has been so nice. Overall, it’s been a joyous experience.”

This is the first year Berry has qualified for state, and what a ride it has been.

She took down St. Mary’s Academy’s Sarah Emmanuel 6-1, 6-1 and Fountain Valley’s Delaney DeMott 6-0, 6-1 to get to the semifinals.

“What’s working for me, I think, is not letting the other players and cheers get to my mind,” Berry said. “Just sort of isolating myself. Also, analyzing my opponent’s plays early on in the game and adjusting mine to oppose theirs.”

Berry then beat Holy Family senior Lindsey Bovine 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the finals of No. 3 singles.

“That match was all about consistency. She was a very consistent player,” Berry said. “I tend to be a consistent player as well, so it was really long games. It bubbled down to who could last longest. Who could keep it in the longest. And, occasionally getting up to the net and sneaking in those slice valleys.”

At times, Berry had to stop serving to wait and give Bovine time to get set.

“I play fast,” Berry said. “I don’t know why because there’s no rush, but it’s how I play. I like to be speedy.”

Berry’s speedy play has Dawson in a great position. She’ll play Rachel Molnar from D’Evelyn for the No. 3 singles title.

Freshman Bridget Bell also has a shot to be the first individual champion after she advanced to the No. 2 singles finals over Steamboat Springs’ Maddie Thompson.

D’Evelyn leads team race heading into final day

D’Evelyn distanced itself from the field early on Friday after three teams were locked at the top to start the day, but Colorado Academy stormed back in playbacks to close the lead.

Heading into the final day of the 3A girls tennis state tournament, D’Evelyn is in the lead with 51 points. Colorado Academy and Dawson are in second and third with 49 and 44, respectively.

Colorado Academy will need to do some work Saturday to steal the team title from D’Evelyn as the Jaguars have a firm grip on the competition. The Mustangs have three players in the finals, while D’Evelyn has five. The two teams will face off in No. 4 doubles as Charity Perks and Keri Jennings take on Alexandra Ford and Story Wolf-Tinsman.

Steamboat Springs’ Mae Thorp will face off against Colorado Academy’s Sammy Moore-Thomson for the No. 1 singles title. Both Thorp and Moore-Thomson are freshmen.

In No. 1 doubles, it’s Eaton’s Courtney Leafgren and Shelby Naill vs. D’Evelyn’s Angi Reed and Taylor Whatley.

Eaton has not had a doubles champion since 1996.

The No. 2 singles matchup is set with Colorado Academy junior Savannah Mease vs. Bell.

The last singles champion for Colorado Academy was Jessika Mozia in 2012.

D’Evelyn’s No. 2 doubles tandum Cammy Lee and Elisa Dean face Holy Family’s Maren Steiner and Caroline Smolky.

Holy Family has two runner-up finishes in doubles, but has not been able to break through to win the title. Brianna Barlett and An Tran were the last tandem to make it to the title.

D’Evelyn and Holy Family will again be matched up in the No. 3 doubles title with Maggie Hime/Olivia Sanders vs. Leah Schwartz/Camilla Ruiz.
