Valor Christian and Resurrection Christian have risen to the top of their respective baseball rankings this week.

Valor, No. 2 in the Class 4A preseason, bumped up one spot following preseason No. 1 Mountain View’s 1-2 start. The Eagles received seven of the 11 first-place votes and lead this week’s CHSAANow.com ranking. Mountain View slipped to No. 9.

Montrose moved from No. 4 to No. 2, Windsor is now No. 3 and Longmont — which beat Mountain View twice — is No. 4. Air Academy rounds out the top 5.

Falcon (No. 7) and D’Evelyn (No. 8) are newcomers to the 4A poll.

Resurrection Christian, meanwhile, takes over atop 2A. The Cougars got four first-place votes and edged No. 2 Lutheran by four overall points.

Denver Christian, the preseason No. 1 in 2A, dropped to No. 3. That ranking added Front Range Christian at No. 9.

The other No. 1 teams remained the same this week. Those are ThunderRidge (5A), Holy Family (3A) and Stratton (1A).

The 5A poll added No. 9 Dakota Ridge, which beat preseason No. 4 Cherry Creek last weekend.

New to 3A are Valley (No. 7) and Basalt (No. 10). The 1A ranking added No. 9 Dove Creek.

  • 1A girls basketball Great 8 roundup: Norwood edges Kit Carson

    (Brock Laue)
    (Brock Laue)

LOVELAND — Norwood, the No. 2 seed in the Class 1A girls basketball state tournament at the Budweiser Events Center, had a commanding 12-0 lead at the end of the first quarter over No. 7 seeded Kit Carson in the quarterfinals.

The Mavericks looked like they might run away and hide from the Wildcats, but Kit Carson showed a lot of heart and took a 28-27 lead with 5:20 remaining. Norwood never lost its cool in an exciting 38-35 victory to advance to their first final four since 2012 when it finished as runner-up to Pawnee.

Norwood held a 27-17 lead in the third quarter, but Kit Carson senior guard Brooke Crawford came alive. She was cold shooting in the first half with a mere three points, but ignited the Wildcats’ offense with 15 second-half points on an array of jumpers and drives.

The Mavericks remained poised as Jordan Williams, the leading scorer this season for Norwood with a 16.9 average, buried 4-of-4 at the charity stripe in the final two minutes in a 13-point performance. Lucia Viukova, a skilled 6-foot versatile player with a good mid-range jumper, chipped in 3-of-4 free-throws down the stretch and scored 15 points.

Norwood coach Greg King, also the head boys coach for the Mavericks’ playoff team, knew the matchup against Kit Carson wouldn’t be easy.

“It’s a good thing we got off to a good, quick start, because we knew they were going to comeback,” King said. “At some time they were going to make a run, but I thought our kids, when we lost the lead the one time, they were resilient and we took the lead back. It was a good win for us.”

Kit Carson will play Dove Creek in a consolation game Friday morning.

Norwood, now 23-1 this season, moves on to face Eads in the final four Friday evening. Eads, 21-1, beat Dove Creek 56-26 on Thursday.

“We knew it would be just like this,” King said about the hard-fought win over Kit Carson. “There are eight pretty good teams here.”

    Briggsdale 34, Idalia 33

In the day’s first game, the Briggsdale Falcons led 19-10 at the half, but Reagan Shaffer and Idalia fought back to take a 26-25 lead into the fourth.

Shaffer had 12 second-half points, but the Falcons’ Leilani Carrasco drained a winning jumper with two seconds left to lead Briggsdale to a 34-33 victory and a trip to the Final Four.

The Falcons will take on No. 1-seeded Caliche in the semifinals.

    Eads 56, Dove Creek 26

The Eagles were dominant and impressive throughout with leads of 26-12 at the half and 39-17 at the end of the third.

Kailyn Lane (13 points), six-foot-one Tanaia Hansen (12 points), and Brittanie Newman (10 points), led a balanced attack for the Eagles.

Eads has nine state titles in girls basketball, with its last crown coming in 2008.

The Eagles will take on Norwood in the Final Four at 4:00 p.m.

    Caliche 69, Cheraw 32

Caliche, the girls state title favorite, looked every bit as good as their hype with a dominant 19-0 start. The Buffaloes never looked back as they used all their speed, ball movement, and pressure defense to overwhelm the Wolverines and advance to the Final Four against Briggsdale.

Four Buffaloes scored in double figures led by Jessica Taylor’s 14 points.

The Caliche vs. Briggsdale matchup will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday.

  • Poudre joins 5A girls basketball poll

    Regis Jesuit ThunderRidge girls basketball
Regis Jesuit remains atop the girls basketball ranking in 5A this week. (Mark Adams)

Poudre, winner of its past five games, has joined this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A girls basketball ranking.

The Impalas are now 16-5 and are ranked No. 10.

Regis Jesuit continued to lead the ranking, as the Raiders have all season long. In fact, the top-6 all stayed the same this week, including No. 2 Grandview, No. 3 Lakewood, No. 4 Mountain Vista, No. 5 Fossil Ridge and No. 6 Cherry Creek.

Highlands Ranch moved up to No. 7 from No. 9 and Rock Canyon from No. 10 to No. 8. ThunderRidge dropped one place to ninth.

Each of the other four No. 1 teams stayed put, too. Those are Broomfield (4A), Holy Family (3A), Lutheran (2A) and Caliche (1A).

With the regular season ending this weekend, these will serve as the final rankings of the season.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

  • Lots of changes to girls basketball rankings, including Lakewood at No. 3

    Dakota Ridge Lakewood girls basketball
Lakewood moved up to No. 3 in this week’s 5A poll. (Tim Visser/TimVisserPhotography.com)

This week’s CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings look mighty different than they did a week ago.

No, there are no new No. 1 teams in any of the five classifications. However, there were a number of big movers.

Included, in 5A: Lakewood going from No. 6 to No. 3, Mountain Vista from No. 9 to No. 4 and Cherry Creek from No. 8 to No. 6.

Lakewood has now won eight games in a row. Mountain Vista, meanwhile, beat then-No. 5 ThunderRidge last week.

Rock Canyon shoulders at least part of the blame for the shakeup. The Jaguars upset then-No. 4 Highlands Ranch last week as they went 3-0, and are now ranked No. 10.

Highlands Ranch tumbled to No. 9 after losing its third-straight game. ThunderRidge dropped to No. 8.

Regis Jesuit stayed atop 5A, and Grandview remained at No. 2.

The week’s other big mover was Peak to Peak, which went from No. 9 to No. 4 in 3A. That ranking added three new teams this week: No. 7 Platte Valley, No. 8 Grand Valley and No. 10 Trinidad.

Other newcomers: No. 10 Palmer Ridge in 4A and No. 10 Heritage Christian in 2A.

Broomfield (4A), Holy Family (3A), Lutheran (2A) and Caliche (1A) all stay atop their respective polls this week.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

Mountain Vista has joined this week’s CHSAANow.com girls basketball ranking in 5A.

The Golden Eagles, who have won 11 straight games, toppled then-No. 6 Rock Canyon as part of a 3-0 week last week. They are now ranked No. 9.

Aside from Rock Canyon, ranked teams in 5A went 20-0 last week. Regis Jesuit held on to the top spot in that poll.

However, there is a new team in the 2A poll, where Lutheran takes over for Yuma. The Lions moved up from No. 2 after Yuma lost to then-No. 4 Akron on Saturday. Lutheran also went 2-0 last week.

Akron moved up to No. 2 this week, while Yuma dropped to No. 4. Heritage Christian was the lone newcomer in 2A, joining at No. 10.

The other No. 1 teams stayed put. Those are Valor Christian (4A), Holy Family (3A) and Caliche (1A).

The 3A poll added No. 10 Brush, while 1A added No. 7 Briggsdale and No. 9 South Baca.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.
