  • Pine Creek football cruises by Falcon for a chance to defend its 4A state title

FALCON — As Pine Creek head coach Todd Miller looked at his players in full celebration over their 34-14 Class 4A semifinal win, he couldn’t help but let his emotions show.

In the last several years, Miller had seen many of his players battling through adversity. Whether it be not making the field of 16 in 2012 or watching their community endure the wrath of the Black Forest fire, it had been a rough few years for the Eagles.

But today, Miller and his boys stand one win away from a second consecutive 4A state championship. All that stands between them and the perception of a dynasty are the Longmont Trojans.

“These kids deserve it, we’re a community,” Miller said while choking back tears. “I guess the work you put into get to this point… your family has to give, these kids’ families give and these coaches give a lot. This game is so great, but it takes a lot from you.”

The Eagles weren’t going to advance without a fight from Falcon. The Falcons took Pine Creek to overtime earlier in the year and felt that they had a chance to win that game. That mentality gave them the confidence that anyone needs when stepping on the field with a defending champion.

The game plan for the Falcons appeared to be very cut and dry early. They wanted to keep the ball on the ground and eat up as much clock as possible.

They also had no problem throwing caution to the wind early.

Facing an early fourth down, the Falcons went for it, converting on a Wyatt Aaberg run. The overall plan worked well as their opening drive took 6:12 off the clock before Kennieth Lester punched into the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown run.

“We thought defensively it was the two best teams in the state” Falcons co-head coach Brian Green said. “We knew defensively they would be tough so it was important to score some early points.”

Not only did they score early points, but they kept the Eagles’ offense off the field for more than half of the first quarter. The unit appeared to out of sync after spending so much time on the bench. They drove for an early first down, but Eagles quarterback Tommy Lazzaro was flagged for intentional grounding then sacked on the next play.

In fact, the Eagles couldn’t gain any traction until 4:04 remaining in the first half. Lazzaro connected with running back JoJo Domann for a 20-yard touchdown pass, finally getting the Eagles on the board.

“We just kept fighting and we didn’t get frustrated,” Lazzaro said. “The offensive line kept giving us some good looks and once we settled down we were able to find the end zone.”

The first touchdown for the Eagles came off a blocked field goal attempt for the Falcons. While playing like they had nothing to lose early, they suddenly went conservative.

“Our thinking was to get a two-score lead,” Green said. “We had a chance to get up by two and we had confidence in our kicker so we gave him a shot.”

The Eagles found the end zone with less than a minute remaining in the half, taking a 14-7 lead.

After forcing a turnover in the opening minutes of the second half, the Falcons’ offense appeared to be stuck in neutral. The Eagles defense proved to be two much and two more touchdown runs by Lazzaro gave Pine Creek a 28-7 lead in the fourth quarter.

Each team would add a late touchdown, but when the final horn sounded, the Eagles were given a chance to defend their state title win from a year ago.

“We didn’t panic,” Miller said. “You get down in a lot of games like this and you panic, but we have a lot of experience here. It wasn’t our first time. We just kept playing and stuck to the plan.”

Pine Creek and Longmont will be the first game of a state championship double-header at Sports Authority Field on Saturday. It is Pine Creek’s third state championship game since 2011. Kickoff is set at 11 a.m.

FALCON — Another week. Another huge upset for the Falcon High School football team.

Thanks to a smash-mouth ground attack, especially in the second half, the No. 13-seeded Falcons upended No. 5 Pueblo South 38-21 Friday night in the Class 4A quarterfinals at the FHS field.

“Our guys in the trenches have been fantastic all year long, and they really come together about midseason,” said Falcon co-head coach Brian Green, whose team also upset No. 4 Denver South 20-7 in the first round of the playoffs.

Falcon improved to 8-4 overall with its fourth win in a row, thanks in large part to its 400 yards rushing. The Falcons move on to play defending state champion Pine Creek next week in the semifinals.

Matt Bastian fueled the Falcons attack rushing for a career-high 212 yards on 25 carries. The junior also had scoring runs of 31 and 19 yards.

“We just wanted to keep on getting first downs and keep on scoring,” the 5-foot-9, 180-pound Bastian said. “We are determined to run the ball and we will make sure it happens. We had great blocking and we were able to make things happen out there.”

South saw its season end with a 10-2 record, and the Colts also saw their six-game winning streak snapped. A year ago, the Colts advanced to the Class 4A semifinals before losing to Montrose in overtime 39-38 at Dutch Clark Stadium in Pueblo.

On Friday night the Colts were in control — at least early.

South marched 65 yards in nine plays capped by Dennis Ramos’ 1-yard scoring run at the 7:46 of the first quarter.

Moments later South was business agaim when Ray Mitchell intercepted quarterback Ty Murphy’s pass, giving South the ball at the Falcon 34-yard line.

South quarterback Nathan Spinuzzi had his pass intercepted by John Lynch and returned to the Colts’ 39-yard line and then 15 yards was added on because of a Colts’ personal foul.

That was a huge momentum swing as Falcon’s Wyatt Aaberg finished his team’s drive with a 14-yard scoring run at 4:17 of the first quarter.

Aaberg stepped up again for the Falcons giving them their first lead at 14-7 with a bruising 5-yard run at 9:07 of the second quarter.

The rest of the first half was a see-saw affair with each team’s offense producing plays.

Spinuzzi tossed a pass over the middle to Mitchell who blazed in for a 59-yard touchdown at 5:24 of the second quarter.

Once again Falcon answered, this time with an 11-play 80-yard drive that finished with Bastian’s 31-yard run around the right corner with 1:07 left in the half.

Like the start of the game, South started fast in the second half.

The Colts tied the game at 21-all when Spinuzzi scampered around the right corner for a 7-yard score on 4th-down-2 from the 7-yard line.

That, however, is when the Colts’ highlights stopped and Aaberg and Bastian’s kept rolling.

Falcon answered quickly with a 70-yard jaunt by Aaberg to put the Falcons up 28-21 with 4:23 left in the third.

“I caught the pitch on the reverse from Matt (Bastian),” said Aaberg, a senior. “I just went around the corner and my line did a great job. They really handled (South) and they helped us get those touchdowns, and let us get this win.”

Bastian came up big again with a 19-yard run, capping a 12-play drive at 6:20 of the fourth that essentially sealed the victory for the Falcons as they held a 14-point lead.

“Matt is one of those very talented kids who is so fun to have around,” Green said.

Austin Toussaint capped the scoring with a 35-yard field goal for Falcon with 3:30 left.

“I don’t think you shake your head at 10 wins ever,” South coach Ryan Goddard said. “I have great appreciation for everything we accomplished this year. “They (Falcon) broke a few big plays in the second half, and that’s a credit to them.”

South’s offensive was paced by Spinuzzi who had 257 yards passing.

The win avenged a 24-21 loss to Pueblo South on Sept. 19. Falcon’s three other losses are to Pine Creek, Longmont, and Montrose. Longmont and Pine Creek have already advanced to the 4A semifinals; Montrose has a chance to do it on Saturday.

Then senior Collin Root drilled a 56-yard field goal on the final play of the Mustangs’ second-round game against Eaglecrest. It made for an unbelievable, miraculous 44-43 win.

“56-yarder, with that kind of pressure, by Collin Root, it’s just an unbelievable kick,” Ralston Valley coach Matt Loyd told Colorado Preps’ Scoreboard Show on Friday night.

The two teams slugged it out the entire night, with Eaglecrest methodically marching down and kicking what looked to be a game-winning field goal with 38 seconds left following a fumble recovery.

But Ralston Valley got one last crack. With Eaglecrest in a prevent defense, and despite having just one timeout, the Mustangs dialed up three straight run plays — two by Kyle Rush, another by Andrew Wingard — to drive down to Eaglecrest’s 39-yard-line with 3.3 seconds remaining.

With the famous Legacy Stadium wind at his back, Root stepped up and drilled the kick. Eaglecrest coach Mike Schmitt later told the Aurora Sentinel that he thought the odds of it going through the uprights was “1 percent.”

“He’s such a heck of a kicker, and he’s hit 55 in practice multiple times,” Loyd said. “The key word being ‘practice.’ Different story with the game on the line in order to keep moving on.”

Root entered the game having hit 2-of-4 field goals this season, with a long of 43.

“It was unbelievable,” Loyd said. “It was pretty exciting for our guys. We’ve actually been out there three times before, and lost heartbreakers, so we were able to win that one.”

The Mustangs, a No. 1 seed, move on to host No. 2 Fairview in the quarterfinals.

    4A: (13) Falcon 28, (4) Denver South 13

Matt Bastian, Josiah Hall, Jeff Vela and Wyatt Aaberg each had rushing touchdowns for the Falcons, who pulled the biggest upset of 4A’s first round.

“We knew we had to go on the road and battle against a really tough team, and our kids really came together and found a way to get it done tonight,” Brian Green, Falcon’s co-head coach, told the Scoreboard Show.

It was Vela’s score in the third quarter which made it 21-7 as Falcon announced the upset potential to the state. The Rebels did cut it to 21-13 later in the third quarter, but Aaberg’s touchdown put the game away.

Falcon did a great job of containing South’s ground game, as well, and actually didn’t allow a rushing touchdown.

Denver South entered the game averaging 323.7 rushing yards per game. Falcon held the Rebels to 35 yards on 29 carries.

“It’s just an incredible job by our kids,” Green said. “It was a great gameplan, and just attacking. We weren’t sitting back waiting for them — but just attacking and running downhill on defense.”

Falcon jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the game. It advances to play Pueblo South in the quarterfinals, a team that beat the Falcons 24-21 on Sept. 19. Falcon will host.

    4A: (5) Pueblo South 20, (12) Greeley West 7

Ray Mitchell had two rushing touchdowns to spot Pueblo South a 14-0 lead in the first half and the Colts never looked back en route to the win. The defense had an outstanding night, as well.

“I can’t give enough praise to our defense and what they did, and getting off the field in key situations, and making plays,” Pueblo South coach Ryan Goddard told the Scoreboard Show. “Our kids just stepped up.”

Nate Spinuzzi also kicked a pair of 23-yard field goals in the win. The final came on a long, time-consuming drive which put the game out of reach.

“It’s a tribute to our offensive line, and credit to those guys up front, and our backs,” Goddard said. They did a fantastic job of just grinding it out and getting first downs.”

    5A: (2) Fairview 45, (3) Overland 27

Quarterback Johnny Feauto threw four first-half touchdown passes, three to Tim Ryan, as Fairview opened a 28-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

“To be able to get that halftime lead was a great start,” Fairview coach Tom McCartney told the Scoreboard Show.

Feauto finished with five touchdown passes, and Ryan also added a 65-yard rushing touchdown.

    Short stuff

    • Arickaree/Woodlin carved out a spot in 6-man’s championship game with a 72-22 win over Fleming in the semifinals.
    • No. 2 Fort Collins beat No. 15 Rampart 49-6 in 4A. The Lambkins get a rematch with Longmont next. “We had to battle the elements,” coach Eric Rice told the Scoreboard Show. “The skies opened up and it pretty much poured the whole second half, and we didn’t see that in the forecast. I’m proud of our kids for being able to adjust.”
    • Two No. 1 seeds in 5A just rolled in running clock wins: Cherry Creek beat No. 4 Bear Creek 56-21, and Grandview beat No. 5 Lakewood 40-0.
    • Another big win for a top seed in 5A: No. 2 Valor Christian beat No. 3 Mountain Vista 44-0. Quarterback Dylan McCaffrey threw for 318 yards and two touchdowns.
    • One more: No. 2 Regis Jesuit 44, Heritage 0. Alec Barnes rushed for three touchdowns.
    • In 4A, No. 7 Longmont beat No. 10 Pueblo Centennial 26-7. Longmont has won seven straight games after a 1-3 start. “It’s super-exciting to be able to do that,” coach Doug Johnson told the Scoreboard Show. “It’s just a tough-minded group of kids.”
    • Discovery Canyon, 3A’s top seed, easily handled No. 16 Berthoud, 41-0. It’s actually the first playoff win in school history. “We talked a little bit about it, and just about the disappointing exit of the previous two seasons,” coach Shawn Mitchell told the Scoreboard Show. “I feel like this group just has a different mentality. I don’t think they had too much anxiety about that. I think that they were just focused on being 1-0 at the end of this week. But for the program itself, it was a big hurdle to get over.”

AURORA — Pine Creek and Discovery Canyon were selected as the top seeds when the Class 4A and 3A playoff football brackets were announced on Sunday morning.

Both teams went unbeaten at 10-0 during the regular season, and were atop the final Wild Card points standings for their respective classifications.

Pine Creek is the defending 4A champion. The Eagles are riding a 21-game winning streak, the largest of any 11-man team. Their last loss came to 5A Columbine on Sept. 12 of last season. Pine Creek hasn’t lost to a 4A team since dropping a game to Ponderosa in Oct. 2012 — a span of 23 games.

The Eagles went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in CHSAANow.com’s rankings during the regular season. They own wins over five teams which made the playoff field.

Other top seeds, and those hosting first-round games, include: No. 2 Fort Collins, No. 3 Montrose, No. 4 Denver South, No. 5 Pueblo South, No. 6 Dakota Ridge, No. 7 Longmont and No. 8 Windsor.

Montrose was the runner-up in last year’s 4A title game. The Indians (9-1) have yet to lose to a 4A team this season, with the lone loss coming to 5A Lakewood.

Discovery Canyon, meanwhile, has been No. 1 in the CHSAANow.com poll and the Wild Card points for a few weeks now. The Thunder have a number of key wins, including on the road at Holy Family and over Pueblo East. They also beat Rampart, a 4A playoff team.

On Friday, Discovery Canyon held off an upset attempt by beating Canon City in overtime.

Other first-round hosts in 3A are No. 2 Evergreen, No. 3 Roosevelt, No. 4 Pueblo East, No. 5 Lutheran, No. 6 Rifle, No. 7 Holy Family and No. 8 Conifer.

One thing’s for sure: There will be a new champion in 3A. Coronado, which won last year’s title, moved up to 4A (and made the playoffs). Likewise, last year’s runner-up Silver Creek also moved up.

Find the entire 3A bracket here.

Classes 5A, 2A, 1A, 8-man and 6-man are already in the postseason. All five of those classification completed their first rounds this past weekend.

    CHSAA regional seeding/pairing procedure

    1. All league champions will automatically earn a berth to regionals.

    2. The remaining teams (up to 36) will be selected based on the MaxPreps Rankings published at the end of the regular season.

    3. Teams will then be seeded on the CHSAA regional seeding criteria:

    • The MaxPreps rankings will be the primary consideration
    • The CHSAA Seeding Committee will only make changes based on splitting up league opponents and geographical considerations (if and when possible)

    4. Teams seeded Nos. 1-12 will host regionals.

    5. All regional winners will automatically advance to the state champions
