Three days after upsetting then-No. 7 Lakewood, Ralston Valley girls basketball finds itself ranked in CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A poll.

The Mustangs beat Lakewood 69-41 on Friday. Monday, they are ranked No. 8.

Also joining — or in their case, returning to — the poll was Grand Junction (No. 9).

ThunderRidge stayed in 5A’s top spot, and is now a unanimous pick with all 17 first-place votes.

Broomfield (No. 2), Highlands Ranch (No. 3), Grandview (No. 4), Monarch (No. 5) and Horizon (No. 6) also remained in their respective rankings.

Denver East bumped up one spot to No. 7, while Lakewood fell three places to No. 10.

Elsewhere, there’s a new No. 1 team in the 2A ranking. Peyton shot up from No. 5 to the top spot this week after taking down former No. 1 Yuma 65-45 on Saturday. The Panthers are 8-0.

Each of the three other No. 1 teams remained the same: Valor Christian (4A), Sterling (3A) and Kit Carson (1A).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.

  • Lutheran’s boys own sprint finals at 2A track meet

Lutheran won the 2A boys track and field championship. (Whitney Webermeier/CHSAANow.com)

LAKEWOOD — Maybe it’s something in the water flowing out of the drinking fountains at Lutheran High School.

“It’s holy water,” Darian Perez said with a laugh after Saturday’s final of the Class 2A boys 100-meter dash at the Colorado State Track and Field Championships.

No less than four Lutheran sprinters competed in the finals of the 100 and five in the 200. The Lions had half the field lining up at the start line for the finals in the two events.

Perez’s teammate, Chris Youngs, won the race with Lutheran’s Kent Harris third and Perez fifth. Also competing in the 100 final was Lutheran’s Josh Clausen, who made the podium in ninth place.

They were joined a couple of hours later in the 200 final by teammate Ryan Lee.

Youngs pulled off the double in the afternoon, winning the 200 by nearly two-tenths of a second in 22.42. In both races, Youngs finished just ahead of Meeker sophomore T.J. Shelton, who won last year’s 100-meter title. Harris again placed third.

At the start of the season, Youngs didn’t realize what a special group he was working out with.

“It really is (a surprise) that we’re all good enough to get into the finals,” said Youngs, a sophomore.

Then again, said Perez, “In practice we’re pretty much competing with ourselves.”

Perez went on to finish fifth in the 400 and seventh in the 200.

Lutheran’s sprint coach, Darwin Horan, said it’s been an easy group to coach.

Four of his senior runners competed in the finals in last year’s state 4-by-400-meter relay, where they were seeded first. They finished second to Lyons.

“They were so mad,” Horan said. “They got everybody together (for off-season workouts).”

That set the tone for their preseason workouts. The seniors also set the bar for the rest of the group.

Horan claims he doesn’t have to coach them up much.

    “They’re hard workers,” he said.

Youngs and Harris both run club track in the summer have different coaches.

“We work with their club coaches,” Horan said.

Whatever the collective group is doing, it’s obviously working wonders.

The Lions capped off the day by winning the 4-by-400-meter relay in a meet-record time of 3:23.30 to capture the 2A boys team title with 80 points, outdistancing second-place Lyons by 11½ points.

Cherokee Trail and Grandview were tied with 70 points heading into the final event of the 5A boys meet, with Fountain-Fort Carson a close third at 68.

Fountain-Fort Carson won the 5A boys 4-by-400 title. That gave the Trojans the team victory by two slim points over Grandview.

Fort Collins won the 5A girls title by four points over Pine Creek.

The Palmer Ridge boys and Niwot girls took the 4A team titles, with Niwot winning the 4-by-400 over Thompson Valley to decide the team title between the two.

The Classical Academy swept the 3A titles, winning the boys by 13 points over Coal Ridge and the girls by 28½ over Eaton.

Paonia took the 2A girls title for the second straight year, defeating its North Fork rival and training partner, Hotchkiss, by 16 points.

Heritage Christian won by five points over Vail Christian for the 1A boys title and finished second in the girls team race to Shining Mountain Waldorf.

Poudre, winner of its past five games, has joined this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A girls basketball ranking.

The Impalas are now 16-5 and are ranked No. 10.

Regis Jesuit continued to lead the ranking, as the Raiders have all season long. In fact, the top-6 all stayed the same this week, including No. 2 Grandview, No. 3 Lakewood, No. 4 Mountain Vista, No. 5 Fossil Ridge and No. 6 Cherry Creek.

Highlands Ranch moved up to No. 7 from No. 9 and Rock Canyon from No. 10 to No. 8. ThunderRidge dropped one place to ninth.

Each of the other four No. 1 teams stayed put, too. Those are Broomfield (4A), Holy Family (3A), Lutheran (2A) and Caliche (1A).

With the regular season ending this weekend, these will serve as the final rankings of the season.

  • Lots of changes to girls basketball rankings, including Lakewood at No. 3

    Dakota Ridge Lakewood girls basketball
Lakewood moved up to No. 3 in this week’s 5A poll. (Tim Visser/TimVisserPhotography.com)

This week’s CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings look mighty different than they did a week ago.

No, there are no new No. 1 teams in any of the five classifications. However, there were a number of big movers.

Included, in 5A: Lakewood going from No. 6 to No. 3, Mountain Vista from No. 9 to No. 4 and Cherry Creek from No. 8 to No. 6.

Lakewood has now won eight games in a row. Mountain Vista, meanwhile, beat then-No. 5 ThunderRidge last week.

Rock Canyon shoulders at least part of the blame for the shakeup. The Jaguars upset then-No. 4 Highlands Ranch last week as they went 3-0, and are now ranked No. 10.

Highlands Ranch tumbled to No. 9 after losing its third-straight game. ThunderRidge dropped to No. 8.

Regis Jesuit stayed atop 5A, and Grandview remained at No. 2.

The week’s other big mover was Peak to Peak, which went from No. 9 to No. 4 in 3A. That ranking added three new teams this week: No. 7 Platte Valley, No. 8 Grand Valley and No. 10 Trinidad.

Other newcomers: No. 10 Palmer Ridge in 4A and No. 10 Heritage Christian in 2A.

Broomfield (4A), Holy Family (3A), Lutheran (2A) and Caliche (1A) all stay atop their respective polls this week.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

  • 5A girls basketball ranking adds Mountain Vista at No. 9

    Mountain Vista girls basketball
Mountain Vista joined this week’s girls basketball ranking in 5A. (Taylor Blatchford/Mountain Vista Journalism)

Mountain Vista has joined this week’s CHSAANow.com girls basketball ranking in 5A.

The Golden Eagles, who have won 11 straight games, toppled then-No. 6 Rock Canyon as part of a 3-0 week last week. They are now ranked No. 9.

Aside from Rock Canyon, ranked teams in 5A went 20-0 last week. Regis Jesuit held on to the top spot in that poll.

However, there is a new team in the 2A poll, where Lutheran takes over for Yuma. The Lions moved up from No. 2 after Yuma lost to then-No. 4 Akron on Saturday. Lutheran also went 2-0 last week.

Akron moved up to No. 2 this week, while Yuma dropped to No. 4. Heritage Christian was the lone newcomer in 2A, joining at No. 10.

The other No. 1 teams stayed put. Those are Valor Christian (4A), Holy Family (3A) and Caliche (1A).

The 3A poll added No. 10 Brush, while 1A added No. 7 Briggsdale and No. 9 South Baca.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.
