The 2016-17 all-state boys basketball teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a week-long vote of coaches.

A specific player of the year vote was held in each class, as was a vote for coach of the year.

  • Highland tabs Zach Sandtrom as its next football coach

Highland has hired Zach Sandstrom as its football coach, athletic director Steve Latuda said on Monday.

Sandstrom has been an assistant with the Huskies for two seasons, and is a weight and physical education teacher at the school. He replaces Paul Downing, who turned the program around in his two seasons at the helm.

Downing’s teams went 10-9 in two years. The program had won just four games in its previous five seasons.

Sandstrom was picked among a “a very strong pool of candidates,” Latuda said.

“He does a great job with the kids and has done wonders in the weight room,” Latuda said. “He is young and energetic and I know he will throw himself into this job.

“What stood out with Zach is his work ethic, his being a part of the staff that helped turn the program around, as well as his relationship with the kids.”

Sandstrom played football at Chadron State, graduating in 2014. He was a team captain as a senior.

  • 2A boys hoops Final 4 roundup: Holyoke edges Paonia in OT, advances to face Sedgwick County

    (Quentin Sickafoose/CHSAANow.com)

LOVELAND – Nearly 400 miles separate the high schools of Paonia and Holyoke. But on Friday night, their boys basketball teams couldn’t have come any closer.

Down to the wire – and then some – the Eagles from the Western Slope battled with the Dragons, whose home is roughly 30 miles from the Nebraska state border. It required the first overtime game of the Class 2A state tournament to determine a victor.

And even then, just a single point proved to be the only slight difference, as No. 2 seed Holyoke capped a comeback win, 64-63 (OT), over No. 6 Paonia before the raucous crowd at the Budweiser Events Center.

“I never in my wildest dreams thought that would be what would happen,” Holyoke coach Scott Dille said. “But our kids have done it before (come back late to win), and we did it again here tonight. I’m super proud of the kids.”

The Dragons (21-4) found themselves facing a 14-point deficit late in the game with just more than five minutes to play in the final quarter. And with the way the Eagles (22-3) had been playing most the game, that amount seemed rather daunting.

Paonia had simply out-worked Holyoke on both sides of the court for the first three frames. Slowly, but continuously, adding to their lead, the Eagles appeared to be running away with a win to join their girls team in title game appearances on Saturday.

The Dragons finally stormed back as the game wore late, scoring a 23-11 advantage in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Holyoke stood strong after regulation, and a last-second 3-pointer from Colby Simpson was only enough to cut, not match, its lead.

“I was more disappointed that we didn’t start competing earlier. The way we finished is how we should have been playing the whole time,” Dille said. “I just told them to go out there and start making plays. When it came down to it, they did.”

Holyoke was led by 18 points each from both Austin Herman and Alex Straussx, while Gunnar Kroeger contributed 13. MJ Taylor had nine, which included the game-tying basket in the final seconds of regulation.

Paiona also had 18 points both by Simpson, as well as Triston Mautz. Dagan Reinks contributed a big offensive role with 15 points.

Holyoke will play Sedgwick County for the state championship at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Paiona will face Highland in the third-place game at 1:30 p.m.

    (1) Sedgwick County 58, (5) Highland 33

The Cougars started setting out to have their presence felt at the beginning of the season. If there was anybody left who still hadn’t, there certainly aren’t anymore after Friday night.

No. 1 Sedgwick County (24-1) wears that seeding for good reason. The Cougars have posted two emphatic victories in as many days, first knocking off three-time defending champ Sanford in the quarterfinals and following it up with a 25-point blowout over an undefeated Highland squad in the semis. Now, they’re blasting into the title game with something to prove.

“We kind of do,” forward Chad Mikelson said. “We all started chipping in there, scoring together as a team and we’re at our best when we do that.”

Highland (24-1) tried its best to stick around with Sedgwick County, and did so for just past the first half. That’s when the blowout began. The Cougars started going off, tearing through a 32-2 run to end the game on that left the Huskies with no way to respond.

Leading Sedgwick County’s offensive terror was a double-double from Mikelson that included 18 points and 11 rebounds. Michael Nein put up a team-high 19 points, while Cade McKinley added 10.

Koby Anderson finished as Highland’s top scorer with 10 points.

“It’s cool when you see everybody from our community show up,” Mikelson said. “The people in our stands are pretty much all of them we have in our town. It’s great for them to show up and cheer for us the way they do.”

  • 2A boys hoops Great 8 roundup: Sedgwick County knocks off three-time champ Sanford

    (Quentin Sickafoose/CHSAANow.com)

LOVELAND – For the first time in three seasons, there will be a new Class 2A boys basketball champion.

Sedgwick County knew seeding wouldn’t guarantee anything at the state tournament, especially considering its opening-round matchup on Thursday afternoon at the Budweiser Events Center.

Across the court from the top-seeded Cougars, who have only lost one game this season, still stood a tall order in having to get past back-to-back-to-back reigning champion Sanford. The clash between the two was intense as expected, and in the end Sedgwick County (23-1) did just enough to edge the Indians 40-38 in the final minute.

“It was wild, especially in that atmosphere,” coach Stacy Woodhams said. “They have good fans, we have good fans – it was pretty loud in there.”

After giving up the first two baskets, the Cougars got things going with an early scoring run that provided them a slight lead for the majority of the game. Senior Michael Nein, who finished leading all scorers, was explosive in the first quarter and put up all 14 of his total points before halftime.

The Indians (16-8), however, remained within striking distance the entire time. After trailing by as many as 10 points in the second half, Sanford began to put together its comeback bid.

Aided by Sedgwick County’s late offensive struggles that included 18 total turnovers, eight of which were in the fourth quarter, Sanford started to chip away at its deficit. The Indians finally tied the game at 36-36 with 2:30 left to play and defensively held the Cougars to just four points in the final quarter.

Sanford then took its first lead since the early moments of the game in the ensuing minute thanks to the late performance of senior Casey McDaniel, who finished with a team-high 10 points. Also helping the Indians offensively was senior Derick Faucette’s nine points.

Sedgwick County was able to regain its lead with less than a minute to play to punch its ticket to the Final Four. The No. 1 Cougars will face Highland at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

“They had a little mojo,” Woodhams said of Sanford. “We’re young and we showed it a little bit. … But I was happy. Whenever you get a win this time of year, it’s a good thing.”

Sanford moves to the semifinals of the consolation bracket, where it will play Akron at 1:15 p.m. Friday.

    (2) Holyoke 43, (7) Fowler 38

Thursday’s first boys game remained close all the way up until the final minute, when the Dragons prevailed to avoid an opening-round upset.

Holyoke (20-4) came out hot, shooting well from behind the arc to take early control. But Fowler (20-4) was quick to respond in the second and third quarters to remain in contention.

The Dragons were led by MJ Taylor and Austin Herman, who scored 16 and 13 points, respectively. The Grizzlies’ Alex Proctor led all scorers with 17 points.

Friday will mark back-to-back semifinal appearances for Holyoke, which will face No. 6 Paonia at 5:30 p.m. Fowler moves to the consolation semis against No. 3 Del Norte at 10:15 a.m.

    [divider]

    (6) Paonia 45, (3) Del Norte 37

A scoreless second quarter put the third-seeded Tigers in a hole they were unable to climb out of, falling victim of an upset by the sixth-seeded Eagles.

Carlos Parra was the leading scorer for Del Norte (20-5), which led 12-4 after the first quarter. His late-game effort included hitting three 3-pointers in the final quarter in attempt to close the Tigers’ gap that fell short. Parra finished with 12 points and teammate Charlie Hayes contributed nine.

Paonia (22-2) was led by an impressive offensive performance from Dagan Rienks, who finished with a game-high 21 points. Triston Mautz also reached double figures with 10 points.

The Eagles move on to the semifinals, where they will face No. Holyoke at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The Tigers will play No. 7 Fowler at 10:15 a.m. Friday in the consolation bracket.

    (5) Highland 69, (4) Akron 57

Koby Anderson’s banked-in 3-pointer from just past mid-court to beat the buzzer before halftime was a prime example of the way things would go for the Huskies. Simply, in their favor

Highland (24-0) continued its undefeated roll using a fast-paced offense and stingy defense on the other end of the court. Akron (19-5), after trailing by 11 at halftime, closed the gap in the fourth quarter, getting to within one with six minutes left to play before Highland took back control.

Anderson led the Huskies with 20 points, while Cole Rouse and Reese Anderson added 15 and 10 points, respectively.

The Rams’ late-game push was led by Levi Basler, who scored 13 of his 20 total points in the final quarter. Brock Benson scored 14 points and Jordan Herder had 10.

Highland advances to the semifinals to face top-seeded Sedgwick County at 8:30 p.m. Friday. Akron will play Sanford at 1:15 p.m. in the consolation bracket.

DENVER — Pueblo County’s Josiah Nava won a huge quarterfinal match during the state wrestling tournament on Friday, edging Windsor sophomore Will Vombaur.

It was a match that easily could have been contested in the finals, or at least the semifinals. But, as it was, the two met up in Friday’s quarterfinals in the Class 4A 113-pound bracket.

Nava, who won the 4A 106 title in 2015, beat a fellow returning champion in Vombaur, who won 4A’s 106 title last season. He advances to face Shane Coffey of Canon City in Friday evening’s semifinals.

The 113-pound bracket in 4A is one of the toughest in the entire tournament. In addition to Nava and Vombaur is Pueblo East sophomore Jace Trujillo, the reigning champion in the bracket.

Trujillo pinned Air Academy’s James Benson in 58 seconds in his quarterfinal match.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Valor Christian new No. 1 in 4A

    Valor Christian boys basketball team
    (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

Valor Christian boys basketball is the new No. 1 in Class 4A. The Eagles escaped Evergreen in a 54-53 win last week.

The previous top team in the CHSAANow.com 4A rankings, Pueblo West, wasn’t so lucky. The Cyclones lost to Pueblo South 67-64 after being down 34-19 at halftime. Pueblo West didn’t fall too far however, sliding to the No. 2 spot.

That Pueblo South team got some recognition for the upset as they joined the 4A poll at No. 8.

3A also added a new team to the rankings. Manual came in at No. 10 in this week’s CHSAANow.com rankings.

In 5A, Doherty and Grandview swapped places, with the Spartans rising from No. 7 to No. 5. Doherty won its second-straight league title after beating Rampart. Grandview dropped after its loss to No. 4 Eaglecrest.

Chatfield continued the longest win streak in 5A to hold at No. 3. The Chargers’ streak is at 18 after clinching the 5A Jeffco title against Ralston Valley.

Dawson received one first place vote as they rose from No. 9 to No. 6 in the 2A poll. The top three teams remained the same in 2A.

Crowley County entered the 2A rankings at No. 8.

In 1A, Longmont Christian moved from No. 6 to No. 4, swapping with Flagler.

Weldon Valley dropped out, making room for Primero to jump into the rankings at No. 10.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. These are the final rankings of the regular season.

    Complete rankings are below.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Lewis-Palmer jumps up in 4A poll

    Lewis-Palmer Vista Ridge boys basketball
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Lewis-Palmer is making the right moves at the right time when it comes to the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings.

After beating Sand Creek just over a week ago, the Rangers put on another impressive showing with a 65-56 win over PPAC front-runner Vista Ridge. With everyone now paying attention, Lewis-Palmer jumps four spots to land at No. 4 this week.

Pueblo West, Valor Christian and D’Evelyn all stood their ground at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

Sierra also made a significant move as the Stallions are at No. 6, three spots better than last week’s poll. Mead broke into the poll this week at No. 8.

ThunderRidge remains the top team in the 5A poll and rightfully so considering the Grizzlies haven’t lost since Dec. 20 and are undefeated against Colorado teams.

Eaglecrest received two first-place votes and jumped one spot to No. 4 as a result.

Fort Collins is the lone newcomer to the poll, rounding it out at No. 4.

Resurrection Christian remains No. 1 in 3A after edging No. 4 Sterling on Friday. Colorado Springs Christian remains at No. 2 while Manitou Springs jumps one spot to No. 3.

There were no new teams in the 3A rankings.

Undefeated Highland still has a firm hold on the top spot in the 2A poll. Fowler jumped three spots from a week ago, coming in at No. 7. Haxtun joins the 2A rankings at No. 8.

Holly is still the top team in 1A. The top four teams from last week’s ranking went unchanged this week.

There were some big moves however as Rocky Mountain Lutheran made a three-spot jump to No. 5 and at No. 6, Longmont Christian is four spots better than they were last week.

Kit Carson joins the 1A poll at No. 9.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.
