  • Girls basketball rankings: Holy Family returns to 4A poll

    Holy Family has played its way back into the Class 4A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings.

    The Tigers grabbed wins over Erie and Mead last week, earning them enough votes to be the only new team in the 4A poll. They’re ranked No. 10 this week.

    Pueblo South remains the top team in 4A and are still undefeated against Colorado teams this season.

    Air Academy (No. 5) and Pueblo West (No. 6) each gained two spots from their position last week.

    The 5A poll also had only one new team with Fossil Ridge breaking in at No. 9.

    Grandview remains the top team in the class, perhaps even solidifying their position even more after a 70-55 win over No. 7 Cherry Creek.

    Fruita Monument comes in at No. 6, two spots better than last week’s rankings.

    St. Mary’s took 10 first-place votes to remain the No. 1 team in 3A, with Sterling still right behind the Pirates at No. 2.

    Manitou Springs jumped two spots from last week, coming in at No. 10.

    Faith Christian (No. 9) and Eaton (No. 10) are the two new teams to the 3A poll.

    Paonia still stands as the No. 1 team in 2A thanks to an undefeated record.

    Del Norte broke into the top-three, landing at No. 3, two spots better than their position last week. At No. 6, Swink also jumped two places.

    At No. 10, Holyoke is the only new team in the 2A poll.

    In 1A, Kit Carson is still at No. 1, but Fleming jumps a spot to come in at No. 2. Both teams are still undefeated.

    Antonito (No. 3), Kit/Branson (No. 4) and Heritage Christian (No. 5) round out the top half of the rankings. Each of the top five teams received at least one first-place vote.

    Cheyenne Wells is the only new team in 1A, coming in at No. 10.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Pueblo South moves up to No. 1 in 4A

    Pueblo South is the team to beat in the Class 4A girls basketball rankings. At least for this week.

    The Colts are the new No. 1 team in the 4A poll, uprooting Evergreen, which fell one spot to No. 2.

    Other Pueblo-area schools shot up the rankings as well with Pueblo East coming in at No. 4 and Pueblo West going from unranked to No. 6.

    Grandview holds its spot at No. 1 in the 5A poll, taking all 15 first-place votes.

    Doherty made a significant climb, land three spots better at No. 5.

    Fossil Ridge rounds out the rankings at No. 10 and is the only new team in the 5A poll.

    Sterling and St. Mary’s each remain undefeated and have yet to relinquish their spots at No. 1 and No. 2 in 3A. 

    The Pirates looked strong in a win over Lamar on Friday and Sterling was able to edge out No. 10 Manitou Springs on Saturday.

    Liberty Common made a four-spot jump to land at No. 3 this week. There are no new teams in the 3A poll.

    Paonia is still the unanimous No. 1 team in 2A. There were no significant jumps this week, but Del Norte (No. 4), Haxtun (No. 5), Evangelical Christian (No. 7) and Highland (No. 9) are all one position better than the previous rankings. 

    There are no new teams in the 2A poll.

    Kit Carson remains the No. 1 team in 1A with Fleming and Antonio also holding strong at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

    South Baca improved by two spots to land at No. 7.

    La Veta (No. 8), Briggsdale (No. 9) and Holly (No. 10) are the three new teams to crack the 1A rankings.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Evergreen takes over atop 4A

    There’s a new top dog in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings. 

    Undefeated Evergreen, the 4A state runner-up last season assumes the No. 1 spot this week.

    Pueblo South is right behind the Cougars at No. 2 and D’Evelyn climbed three spots to land at No. 3.

    At No. 5 Golden also jumped three spots this week. 

    Pueblo East is the lone newcomer to the 4A poll at No. 8.

    In 5A, Grandview holds its spot at No. 1.

    Overall, the top five teams from a week ago went unchanged.

    Doherty (No. 8) and Fruita Monument (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 5A rankings.

    Like 5A, the top five teams from last week’s 3A poll remain the same, including Sterling at No. 1.

    Moffat County breaks into the 3A poll at No. 9.

    Paonia stays at No. 1 in 2A with a unanimous vote.

    Soroco (No. 4) and Lyons (No. 7) each jumped a spot from a week ago.

    Evangelical Christian is the only new team in 2A, coming in at No. 8.

    Kit Carson holds its spot at No. 1 in the 1A poll with Kit Carson also holding firm at No. 2.

    Three new teams broke into the rankings this week with De Beque (No. 7), Arickaree/Woodlin (No. 8) and South Baca (No. 9) all playing their way in.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Sterling moves up to No. 1 in 3A

    Sterling is the new top dog in the Class 3A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings.

    The Tigers are 6-0 on the young season which includes two wins at the Buena Vista Tournament this past weekend.

    It’s a one-spot jump for Sterling who benefit from two early-season losses by No. 8 Manitou Springs.

    St. Mary’s takes over the No. 2 spot in 3A and Lamar leaps ahead six spots from the preseason rankings, coming in at No. 3.

    At. No. 7, Colorado Springs Christian is the only new team to the 3A poll.

    In 5A, Grandview holds on to the No. 1 spot. Ralston Valley and Highlands Ranch also held firm at their No. 2 and No. 3 spots respectively.

    Horizon (No. 4) and Arapahoe (No. 7) each jumped two spots from the previous rankings.

    Despite a 2-1 record, Valor Christian is still the No. 1 team in 4A. Evergreen jumps up to No. 2 and Pueblo South comes in at No. 3, each team two spots better than the preseason poll.

    Air Academy is the only new team in the 4A poll, rounding it out at No. 10.

    Paonia holds firm at the No. 1 spot in 2A, but Wray is the new No. 2 team, jumping two spots to get there.

    Del Norte made an impressive four-spot leap to land at No. 4 this week.

    At No. 9, West Grand is the only new team in the 2A rankings.

    Kit Carson is still the No. 1 team in 1A with Fleming still holding the No. 2 spot.

    Antonio is new at No. 3, jumping five spots from the preseason poll. Kim/Branson also greatly improved its ranking, coming in at No. 4 which is six spots better than where they came in previously.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Grandview, Valor Christian among preseason favorites

    It appears that defending girls basketball state champions are going to have their work cut out for them in 2016-17.

    Only Valor Christian comes in as a No. 1 team in the CHSAANow.com preseason girls basketball rankings as a team who also finished the season hoisting a state championship trophy.

    The Eagles won their second-straight Class 4A title last year, beating league rival Evergreen 55-40.

    The Cougars will start the season at No. 4.

    Led by Michaela Onyenwere, Grandview comes in as the top team in 5A. The Wolves advanced to the Final 4 last season, but lost a heartbreaker to eventual state champion ThunderRidge.

    The Grizzlies did not break into the top 10 to start the season.

    In 3A, it’s the 2016 state runner-up Manitou Springs who comes in as the No.1 team to start the year.

    The Mustangs return senior Shelby Megyeri, who is regarded as one of the top guards in the state.

    Defending 3A champion, Lutheran lands at No. 4 in the 3A poll.

    Like the 3A poll, it’s the runner-up that will start the season at No. 1 in 2A. After falling to Yuma 55-46 in the 2A title game, Paonia will start the 2016-17 season as the top team in the class.

    Yuma isn’t far behind though as the defending champ sit at No. 2.

    A stunning upset in the first round of the 1A state tournament ended Kit Carson’s bid at a state title, but the Wildcats find themselves as the team to beat to start this season.

    They take the No. 1 spot in the preseason 1A rankings.

    Idalia comes into the season at No. 4 after claiming last year’s 1A title.

    The girls basketball regular season will begin Nov. 30.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Vanguard boys cross country wins first-ever state championship in any sport

    COLORADO SPRINGS — A changing of the guard occurred at the Norris-Penrose Event Center on Saturday. More specifically, Vanguard became one of two boys programs at the state cross country championships to end a four-peat.

    The Crusaders, on the strength of seniors Grant Hughes (fifth place), Harley Morgan (eighth) and junior Nick Lovato (11th) took down the four-time defending state champions in Lyons in Class 2A. With some individuals from non-qualifying teams sprinkled in the top finishers, each Crusader moved up two to four places in team scoring, contributing to the winning 15-26 point tally over runner-up Lyons. As a result, the charter school in Colorado Springs won its first-ever state championship in any sport.

    Moving down from 3A to 2A this year provided Vanguard with a boost. Adding Hughes, a multi-sport athlete who has competed in soccer, basketball, and track, didn’t hurt the team’s chances either.

    “I decided to come out for cross country for the first time,” the senior said, knowing that outstanding runners like Lovato (12th in 3A in 2015) and Morgan (27th) were already in place. “I wanted to help win it with them.”

    A natural athlete, Hughes didn’t need much of an adjustment period to get into the swing of being a high-level cross country competitor. He placed third at the Air Academy Kadet Invite early in the season, went on to claim the 2A Region 2 crown and then earned all-state honors on Saturday.

    “We had a team of 11 and only a team of eight this year,” Morgan said. “Most of the seniors were part of our top five and we basically had to build from scratch. Having Grant was such a blessing. He’s a really athletic guy.”

    Over the course of the season Vanguard established its name as a 2A favorite, cementing that status with a perfect score (1st, 2nd, 3rd individuals) at its regional meet. Now, to bring home a state title for the first time is something extra special.

    “It really means a lot,” Morgan said. “It’s going to bring a lot of focus to the cross country team. I think we’ve inspired a lot of kids at our school.”

    Custer County’s Jerald Taylor (16:06), a senior who placed 16th in 2015, ran away from Rocky Ford junior Cody Danley (16:38) to win the 2A individual title.

    As for the other four-time team champion being overtaken, Monarch took out Mountain Vista, the only program in Colorado history to conquer four consecutive 5A boys titles.

    As the season went on, there was an inkling by many around the state that the Coyotes might be on Mountain Vista’s level. On September 10 at the St. Vrain Invite in Lyons, Monarch came within one point, 71-72, of defeating the Golden Eagles.

    A program that had claimed three 5A girls crowns in a row from 2011-2013, Monarch was looking to secure their first boys championship. They did just that Saturday with an 88-97 victory over Vista. On top of that, senior superman Isaac Green (15:57) claimed his second of back-to-back cross country state titles over Vista’s Joshua Romine (16:04).

    “At the very beginning of the year we do a camp and our goal this year was to win state,” Monarch coach Kent Rieder said. “We felt that with the talent on our team, and I knew all the guys would work hard, we felt we could do it.”

    The Coyote scoring contingent was also comprised of Charlie Perry (3rd), Zach Litoff (22nd), Isaac Russo (25th), and Will Dixon (37th).

    Green couldn’t quite grasp the idea that his team had finally accomplished a long-standing goal.

    “We’ve been dreaming about it for a long time,” he said. “To actually be able to do it, it’s incredible.”

    Initially, Monarch thought Mountain Vista had claimed another title. Green was enthralled by the announcement of the final team results.

    “I was doing another interview and they were talking about the girls teams and I thought they were talking about the boys,” he said. “They were like, “In third place, Monarch.’ I was like, ‘oh, we were so close.’ Then they started talking about the boys teams and I just couldn’t focus. We didn’t think we got it. We were sitting there and they called out Monarch. It was wild.”

    Class 4A

    Air Academy girls have been in the spotlight lately. Katie Rainsberger was the Nike cross country national champion last year and her and her teammates won the 4A team crown.

    Senior Ethan Powell wanted to show that the Kadets, who have been one of the better 4A boys programs in recent years as well, had some serious firepower of their own. By a margin of 15:55.7 to 15:55.8, Powell out-leaned Montrose senior Ian Meek for the state championship. He became the first Air Academy boy to win state cross country since Ian Burrell won 5A in 2002.

    “A lot of times when people talk about our program, the focus goes to the girls team,” Powell said. “That’s totally justified. They are incredible, but it’s nice to show people we’ve got something going on, on the boys side too.”

    In the team race, Palmer Ridge, who was beaten by Durango by two points in 2015, blew away the competition with 55 points to Widefield’s 110 and Air Academy’s 122. Jeremy Meadows (fifth), Andrew Lester (sixth), Ryan Matson (12th), Andrew Rudnicki (14th), and Brandon Hippe (17th) pushed the Bears to their second championship in three years.

    Class 3A

    Tanner Norman got to run at his favorite place on Saturday. Training around 30 times over the past two summers on the trails at Norris-Penrose and TCA’s top competitor, after winning 4A last year, got to soak up the experience again with another performance much to his liking.

    After claiming a race that was considered pretty wide-open in 2015, Norman entered as the heavy favorite this state meet after establishing himself as one of the better runners nationally throughout the fall. The senior (15:44) dominated the field as Faith Christian freshman phenom Cole Sprout was the runner up in 16:10.

    The Classical Academy (111) finished second as a team to Alamosa (77). Caleb Palmer (5th), Isaiah DeLaCerda (6th), Oscar Martinez (17th), Caleb Berlinger (23rd), and Elijah DeLaCerda (26th) led the Mean Moose to their third state championship in a row and fifth overall in boys cross country. They are now tied with The Classical Academy, Rocky Ford, Cherry Creek and Denver East for the fifth-most titles in the sport.
