  • 1A girls basketball Great 8 roundup: Flagler upsets Norwood

LOVELAND — Every team has state championship aspirations. After a 7-12 record a season ago, the Flagler girls basketball players didn’t know if a title was realistic though.

“At the start of this season, I told them I thought they could be in the state tournament and maybe even win it,” Panther coach Gary Elrick said. “Every one of them looked at me like I’m crazy.”

After upsetting No. 1 seed Norwood (21-2), the defending Class 1A champions, on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Alexis Schults on Thursday morning at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, its hard not to believe. The win sent the No. 8 seeded Flagler (18-6) into the Final 4.

“Adrenaline is going through me,” Schults said.

The Mavericks scored the game’s first basket, but the Panthers clawed to a 10-2 lead early. They pumped the margin up to double digits soon after and led 27-16 at halftime, despite 14 points by senior wing Jordan Williams, the lone 1A participant in The Show, the annual Colorado hoops all-star event.

Flagler smothered her teammates, though, holding them to 1-of-7 from the field. Schults, all of 5-foot-2, was an aggressive, dynamic force using her quickness and shot-making to score 13 points in the first two quarters.

More than anything, the Panthers, making their first state tournament appearance since 2007, embraced the bright lights while Norwood seemed rattled with the weight of back-to-back titles on the line.

The Mavericks had more turnovers (20) than points (16) at the break. But, Norwood made adjustments and made a run in closing the deficit to 39-33 headed into the fourth.

In a wild last two minutes of regulation, the Mavericks found a way to tie it up and force overtime at 48 all after Macie Magallon made a pair at the line with 7.4 seconds left. Flagler didn’t get a shot off before the buzzer.

In extra time, Williams scored all eight of Norwood’s points and the title favorites led 56-54, but she fouled out with 19 seconds to go. Elizabeth Grimes calmly knocked down both free throws to force another tie. Norwood was called for traveling the next possession, Flagler got the ball back, and Schults sent the Panthers into the Final 4.

“She’s so explosive that she can change a game around in 20 seconds,” Elrick said. “Good players want the ball at the end and she took a nice shot.”

Schults led the Panthers with 24 points. Jade Hasz went 16-of-18 at the line and scored 18 points. Flagler was money on freebies, going 25-of-32.

The Panthers move on to the state semifinals Friday.

Williams led all scorers with 34 points in the loss for Norwood. The Mavericks will have to settle for the consolation bracket the rest of the way.

    (3) Sangre de Cristo 52 (6) Plateau Valley 38

The Thunderbirds improved to 23-1 with an easy win over the Cowgirls as they led 12-6 after one and 22-14 at the break. Abbey Stagner led Sangre de Cristo with 16 points. Allie Beiriger chipped in 10.

Sangre de Cristo will be making their first Final 4 appearance since 2010 when they face Kit Carson at 7 p.m. on Friday.

    [divider]

    (4) Idalia 41 (5) Eads 31

Idalia improved to 19-2 after a comfortable win over the Eagles (17-7). Susana Herrera led all scorers with 15 points as the Wolves held every Eads player to single digits.

Idalia also reached the Final 4 last year, placing fourth after dropping the third place game to Dove Creek.

    [divider]

    (2) Kit Carson 50 (7) Prairie 35

In a game Prairie never led, the Wildcats’ sister tandem of senior Aurelia (13 points) and freshman Micayla Isenbart (24) applied constant pressure on the Mustangs with Aurelia’s work in the post and Micayla’s versatility as a 6-foot-1 guard.

Kit Carson improved to 23-0 with the victory. They had reached three of the last four state tournaments, but this is the first time in the stretch they’ve made the Final 4.

  • 1A boys basketball Great 8 roundup: Jim Elliot uses height in win

LOVELAND — No. 3 seed Jim Elliot Christian had an obvious advantage against No. 6 South Baca in the Class 1A boys basketball state tournament.

The Warriors had a few inches on the Patriots at every position, allowing them to pass over the top, dominate the glass, protect their own rim, and cruise to the 1A state semifinals with a 67-55 Great 8 victory at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland.

The Patriots struggled with matchups, but then again, who hasn’t struggled guarding Tanner Smith this season?

The 6-foot-1 senior guard, the only 1A player to be named to Colorado’s all-star game, The Show, was a magician with the ball while throwing fancy passes to his post players and getting into the lane at will to score.

The captain of the Warriors, Smith was averaging 18.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 6 assists, 4.1 steals, and 2.5 blocks entering Thursday. He stuffed the stat sheet again on the biggest stage, much to the delight of a large Jim Elliot fan section who made the drive north from Englewood, finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Of course, in a game Jim Elliot led throughout and mostly controlled, Smith got plenty of help from thick forwards Connor Bogner (23 points) and Brennan Moore (18).

Built more like football players, sophomore Bogner and his senior brother Matt, along with senior Moore, look poised to battle in the trenches.

“We’re a lot more physical this year, especially Connor and Brennan Moore,” Smith said. “They are deceptive. They aren’t super athletic guys or super tall or anything, but they just get the ball inside, take their time, they are strong with it, and they finish their layups. That’s what you need to do.”

Jim Elliot, which opened its doors in 1999, is enjoying a dream season. They set a program record with 21 wins, with a now 22-2 mark, and they reached the state tournament for the first time after coming close in recent years.

“We had been to regionals the two years before,” Smith said. “We wanted to get here and enjoy it.”

The Warriors get the chance to continue their best run ever with a Final 4 showdown scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Friday evening.

South Baca (18-4) was led by Matthew Crane’s 16 points.

    (1) Sangre de Cristo 63 (8) Peetz 27

The Thunderbirds cruised to a 24-0 record by handling the Bulldogs in a game that was never close.

They won it all in 2001, their lone state championship in boys hoops.

    (2) Holly 64 (7) Prairie 50

The Wildcats scorched the nets early and won easily over the Mustangs as Yaniel Vidal scored 24 points. Bryan Ortiz and Tristan Nelson chipped in 10 each.

This is Holly’s third straight appearance in the state tournament, but first in the Final 4 in recent years.

    [divider]

    (5) Fleming 54 (4) Ouray 31

The Wildcats handled the Trojans thanks to a balanced scoring effort from Alex Vandenbark (10 points), Joey Stahley (9), Blake Meredith (8), and Cameron Henry (7).

Fleming only has one senior on the roster.

  • Not much movement in football rankings after top-10 teams go 54-11 in Week 4

    Legend Highlands Ranch football
    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Ranked football teams had an outstanding weekend last week, and as a result, there wasn’t a whole lot of movement in the latest CHSAANow.com rankings on Monday.

Top-10 teams went a combined 54-11 last week, and only two of those losses came to unranked foes.

So it follows that all seven No. 1 teams remained the same this week. Leading their respective rankings are Valor Christian (Class 5A), Pine Creek (4A), Lutheran (3A), Brush (2A), Paonia (1A), Dayspring Christian (8-man) and Arickaree/Woodlin (6-man).

There wasn’t a whole lot of change elsewhere.

In 5A, the teams ranked Nos. 1-6 — Valor, Pomona, Grandview, Ralston Valley, Fairview and Regis Jesuit — didn’t budge.

The classification did add at Rocky Mountain at No. 10, and Overland jumped Cherry Creek for the No. 7 spot, but it was a quiet week otherwise. Regis Jesuit remains No. 9.

    Cherry Creek Pomona football
Pomona remained ranked No. 2 in 5A this week. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

The 4A poll added Greeley West at No. 8. The biggest mover there was Fort Collins bumping up to No. 4 this week.

Palisade rejoined the 3A poll at No. 10, while 2A added No. 10 Montezuma-Cortez. Platte Canyon (also No. 10) was 1A’s newcomer, and Flagler (another No. 10) joined the 6-man ranks.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.
