Chaparral has jumped back into the Class 5A volleyball rankings.

The Wolverines (9-4) are now ranked No. 5 in CHSAANow.com’s poll.

Chatfield remained atop the 5A ranking, getting nine of the 11 first-place votes. Also moving up were Prairie View, now No. 6, and Denver East, up to No. 7.

The four other No. 1 teams also stayed put: Lewis-Palmer (4A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Idalia (1A). Lewis-Palmer and Eaton are unanimous top teams in their respective classifications.

    Other newcomers include the following:

    • In 4A: No. 8 Valor Christian and No. 10 The Classical Academy.
    • In 3A: No. 9 Peak to Peak.

There were no new teams in the 2A or 1A rankings.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Football roundup: Cherry Creek survives Cherokee Trail in overtime

Ashton Riley had a 1-yard score in overtime to give No. 1 Cherry Creek a 16-13 win over No. 10 Cherokee Trail on Friday night.

The win kept the Bruins’ winning streak intact, and extended it to 12-straight games. That figure is the second-longest current streak in the state.

Cherokee Trail played the defending champions as tough as anyone has this season. The Cougars actually had a chance to win the game as time expired in the fourth quarter, but a 41-yard field goal missed.

In overtime, Cherry Creek forced Cherokee Trail to settle for a field goal on the first possession. Then, after an incomplete pass, Riley ran nine yards to the 1-yard-line. The next play, he scored.

Riley had 16 carries for 65 yards and the score. Marquise Davis added 106 yards on eight carries, and a touchdown, for Cherry Creek.

Cherokee Trail was led by its defense. Michael Ward had two interceptions, and Anthony Holmes and Dan Turner also had picks. In fact, one of Wards’ interceptions went for the Cougars’ lone score.

    3A/4A: Pueblo Central 27, Pueblo Centennial 24

In the 115th edition of this rivalry, known as the Bell Game, Pueblo Central got four total touchdowns from Mike Ranson to reclaim the Bell.

It was Pueblo Central’s first win in the past six meetings between the two teams, who have been playing since 1892. The game is Colorado’s oldest rivalry.

Ranson had two passing touchdowns, and two rushing.

AJ Sena had three rushing scores for Pueblo Centennial, including one to make it 27-24 with 1:48 to go.

Pueblo Centennial did get one last shot, taking over at its own 44-yard-line, but it wasn’t enough.

The game was a sellout, meaning 15,000 people attended.

    4A: (8) Durango 36, (9) Montrose 35

Nick Jernigan hit a 20-yard field goal with six seconds to play to lift Durango over Montrose for the first time since 2010, according to the Durango Herald.

    Durango is now 5-0.

“Late in the game, I looked in their eyes, and there wasn’t any doubt,” Durango coach David Vogt told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “It was great.”

Montrose was up 21-19 at the half, and the two teams traded the lead in the second half. It was 26-21 Durango in the third, then 28-26 Montrose early in the fourth. Montrose pushed that lead to 35-26 a few minutes later.

But Durango’s Lawrence Mayberry scored with 2:55 remaining, and the Demons recovered the onside kick. The ensuing drive included a fourth-down conversion with 21 seconds to play, and, of course, the winning field goal.

“We haven’t beaten them since I’ve been here, and it was kind of a statement for this program to get over that hump with Montrose,” Vogt said. “They’ve been the dominant football program in this region. So it was a great victory for our boys, and for the program.”

    3A: (9) Delta 35, (4) Rifle 21

Delta stormed out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, thanks in large part to two Jonny Ponce touchdowns, and then went on to beat Rifle.

It was the first time Delta had beat Rifle in six years, according to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel.

Delta’s Beau Byers finished the game with six catches for 57 yards and a score.

    3A: (5) Roosevelt 50, (7) Mead 22

In a game delayed weather, including lightning, Roosevelt took a 23-6 lead at halftime, and then pushed it to 43-6 after the third quarter before cruising to the win.

“It was a big win,” Roosevelt coach Noland Eastin told the Scoreboard Show. “It was a crazy night with the rain. … The weather came in and kind of played havoc at the beginning from kickoff time. But, man, it was a big win and it was a great night on homecoming.”

    [divider]

    6-man: Holly 31, (9) Springfield 30

Holly pulled off one of the bigger upsets of the night, even though it trailed 14-11 at halftime.

The Wildcats responded following a big 64-7 loss to Sedgwick County last week.

“We had a couple kids out after our game with Sedgwick County, and I really kind of questioned them about how much heart we had, to come back and play a high-stakes game like this,” coach Dayne Eaton told the Scoreboard Show.

“We just want to get ourselves into the playoffs, and the best way to do that is win these pivotal games like we had tonight,” Eaton said. “It went down to the very end, and it went our way.”

    Notables

    • Weather had its way with some of the state. In Colorado Springs, it was wet and cold, and a giant fog hovered over the Pine Creek/Vista Ridge game all night. But the northern part of the state had it worse: lightning delayed a number of games, and some didn’t end until 10:34 p.m.
    • Fossil Ridge knocked off Poudre 17-14 on a 30-yard field goal as time expired in 5A action.
    • Canon City handled Air Academy 52-6 in 3A, but there was a bit of history in this one for the Kadets. Quarterback Cale Powers completed 33 of 55 passes. The 33 completions are tied for the 13th-most in state history, while the 55 attempts are tied for the 12th-most.
    • Another record book entry: Rye running back Trey Zupancic had five rushing touchdowns in the first half, which is tied for the third most in the state. Rye, No. 5 in 1A, beat Dolores Huerta 62-0.
    • Smoky Hill pull off a huge rally to beat Grand Junction 30-26. The Tigers led 26-7 late in the third quarter, but Smoky scored the game’s final 23 points. Tahir Hopkins had what proved to be the winning touchdown with 2:14 to play. Earlier in the day, Smoky Hill apparently set a world record for the loudest gym. Quite a crowd.
    • Chaparral beat rival Legend 42-35 in 5A. Photos from that game.
    • Rock Canyon entered Week 5 unbeaten at 4-0 and looking to make a statement against 5A No. 4 Regis Jesuit. But the Raiders had other plans, and won 58-14. Regis is now 4-1. Photos from that game are here.
    • In 2A, No. 4 Platte Valley beat No. 6 Eaton 26-6.
    • 8-man No. 2 Sedgwick County handled No. 7 Haxtun 52-14.
    • Another top-10 showdown in 8-man: No. 5 Akron beat No. 3 Merino 42-0.
    • Dove Creek upset No. 10 Hoehne in 8-man, 28-24.
    • 6-man No. 1 Fleming took care of No. 7 Peetz 64-24.
    • Also in 6-man: No. 2 Eads 66, No. 9 Cheraw 14; and No. 3 Kit Carson held off No. 6 Hanover 36-30.
    • Upset in 6-man: Hi-Plains 40, No. 8 Otis 35.

  • Football rankings: Buena Vista moves to top of 1A

Buena Vista has taken over the top spot of the CHSAANow.com Class 1A football rankings following their 53-12 win over Centauri and former No. 1 Paonia’s 35-0 loss against Bayfield.

The Demons are the only new No. 1 seed after a week filled with few upsets.

Cherry Creek remains in the top spot of 5A as the Bruins had a bye this week. They traveled to Utah two weeks ago where they beat Jordan 38-35. They return to the field Friday night to take on Cherokee Trail.

After dropping out of the 5A rankings last week, Grandview is back in the poll at No. 9. Columbine remains at No. 2 after beating Ralston Valley 21-7 Thursday night. The Mustangs, ranked No. 3 last week, fell four slots following their loss.

In 4A, Pine Creek remains No. 1 after drubbing Pueblo West 47-7 Saturday. But the first time this season, they were not voted there unanimously.

The Vista Ridge Wolves gained two first-place votes after an impressive 40-28 win over Palmer Ridge, who stays in this week’s poll at No. 10. Vista Ridge is now No. 2, and faces Pine Creek on Friday.

There were no new teams that joined the 4A rankings.

Pueblo East is still the top team in 3A, although half the first-place votes went to other teams. The Eagles needed plenty of offense to get by Discovery Canyon Friday night. They took the game 47-36.

D’Evelyn returned to the 3A poll after falling out two weeks ago. They got a much-needed 49-30 win over Pueblo County Friday night.

Kent Denver remains the team to beat in 2A after they shut out Ridgeview Academy 40-0. Bayfield leapt over La Junta for the No. 2 slot after its big win over Paonia.

A 28-7 win over Roaring Fork got Gunnison back in the rankings at No. 10. The Cowboys are the only 2A newcomers this week.

In 1A, Buena Vista takes over the top spot with Resurrection Christian coming in at No. 2 and only trail the Demons by a single point in the voting.

Previously unranked Limon made the biggest jump this week as they land at No. 7.

There wasn’t a lot of movement in the 8-man rankings, but Hoehne does join the poll this week at No. 10.

There were no newcomers to 6-man, although Hanover (No. 6) and Peetz (No. 7) each moved up one slot from last week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Volleyball rankings: Mountain Vista makes jump to No. 2 in 5A

    Cherry Creek Mountain Vista volleyball
Mountain Vista is No. 2 in 5A volleyball this week. (Tim Visser/TimVisserPhotography.com)

Every No. 1 team in the CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings held their position, but there was still plenty of new looks near the top of each class.

In Class 5A, Chatfield remains undefeated at No. 1, but they have company nipping at their heels. The Mountain Vista Golden Eagles made the jump from No. 10 to No. 2 following a sweep of 4A’s Ponderosa, a team that many would call one of the best in the state, regardless of classification.

Undefeated Prairie View and Bright both join the rankings this week at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively.

In 4A, Lewis-Palmer has yet to relinquish the top spot this year, but now it has Colorado Springs-area rival Cheyenne Mountain right behind them at No. 2. The Indians looked impressive during a 3-0 sweep of Doherty this week and will get their shot at the Rangers later this season.

Ponderosa fell two spots following its loss to Mountain Vista.

New to the 4A poll this week is Elizabeth, who comes in at No. 10.

Eaton continues to remain dominant in the 3A rankings, even taking down last week’s No. 2 Platte Valley early last week.

Undefeated Alamosa breaks into the 3A rankings this week, jumping all the way up to No. 7.

Resurrection Christian says firmly in the No. 1 spot in 2A. One team did break their way into this week’s poll as Vail Christian lands at No. 9.

The No. 1 team in 1A is still Idalia, who has yet to lose this season. McClave played its way into the 1A rankings this week, landing at No. 9.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Football rankings: Mullen, Arapahoe and Heritage join 5A poll

Mullen, Arapahoe and Heritage all climbed into this week’s CHSAANow.com football rankings after impressive wins over the weekend.

The Mustangs are No. 6 in Class 5A this week, while Arapahoe is No. 8 and Heritage is No. 9.

Cherry Creek remained the No. 1 team in 5A, getting 17 of the 18 first-place votes. Pomona dropped from No. 2 to No. 7 in Class 5A, following a stunning loss to Mullen. The Panthers held a 11-point lead in the third quarter but couldn’t hang on. As a result, Columbine takes over the No. 2 spot this week.

Ralston Valley moved up behind the Rebels and is No. 3. Valor Christian sits at No. 4, and Regis Jesuit rounds out the top-5.

Cherokee Trail is the No. 10 team in 5A this week.

    Dakota Ridge Pine Creek football

In 4A, Pine Creek once again received every first-place vote after they made a statement in their win over then-No. 3 Dakota Ridge on Thursday.

But it was Vista Ridge and quarterback Elway Tubbs that turned heads this week as they trounced then-No. 7 Ponderosa 57-35 Friday night. The Wolves leapt from No. 5 to No. 3 with a date with Pine Creek still on the horizon.

The Western Slope added two teams this week as Montrose comes in at No. 9 while Durango makes an appearance at No. 10.

The record-breaking numbers that Holy Family put up in the previous two weeks came to a halt as they were topped by Palisade in a big 3A matchup. The Bulldogs jumped from No. 5 to No. 3 as a result and even garnered a firs-place vote. Holy Family fell to No. 6.

Pueblo East remained No. 1 in 3A this week. Conifer was the lone newcomer in this week’s 3A poll.

A 49-7 win over Denver West keeps Kent Denver in firm position atop the 2A rankings. But La Junta received a huge surge in votes after scoring 27 points off turnovers in a 33-14 win over Eaton. The Tigers jumped from No. 6 to No. 2.

They are joined in the 2A rankings by Sterling (No. 7), The Academy (No. 9), and Alameda (No. 10).

The top three spots in 1A remained intact, including No. 1 Paonia. Resurrection Christian garnered three first-place votes after an impressive 42-6 win over Platte Canyon.

Center is the lone newcomer in 1A at No. 10.

The 10 teams in the 8-man poll remain the same, but the order changed slightly thanks to Merino’s win over Granada. The Bobcats fell from No. 4 to No. 8 and the Rams jumped one spot to No. 5.

Dayspring Christian remained No. 1 in 8-man.

Cheraw and Le Veta played their way into the 6-man rankings, coming in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. Fleming held on to the top spot in that poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Football roundup: No. 5 Palisade knocks off No. 3 Holy Family in 3A

Palisade had a key fourth-down stop near the goal-line in the fourth quarter as the fifth-ranked Bulldogs upset No. 3 Holy Family 42-34 in a huge Class 3A football game on Friday evening.

PD Riddle ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, while Prescott Price and Isaac Maestas each had two touchdowns.

“It was like an arena football game,” Palisade coach Joe Ramunno told Colorado Preps’ Scoreboard Show on Friday. “We had to take away possessions, and we were able to do that.”

The game tilted back-and-forth throughout, though Palisade never trailed. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter, and that proved to be the difference.

“That’s what we knew we had to do, because they are so potent offensively,” Ramunno said. “They came back, though. They brought it back to 28-21 at the half. … We just knew we had to keep a possession ahead as much as we could, but they made a run for it there at the end.”

Holy Family quarterback Chris Helbig, who set the state passing record two weeks ago, continued his torrid early-season pace. He threw for three more touchdowns on Friday night, giving him 16 over three consecutive games. That breaks the previous record of 15 set by Grand Junction’s Doug Musgrave in 1988.

Trailing 35-28 late in the fourth quarter, Holy Family marched down to the Palisade 5-yard-line, but the Bulldogs turned away the high-powered offense. Palisade scored on Maestas’ 87-yard touchdown on its next drive.

“They had a great drive going on, and our defense really stepped up to get a great finish on it,” Ramunno said. “We were able to stop that fourth-down conversion, and then just a just a few plays later, Isaac was able to get into the end zone.

“It was a big turnaround for us. They were going in to tie it up, and we ended up getting it back to (a 14-point lead).”

Holy Family again cut into the lead to make it 45-34 with 55 seconds to play, but couldn’t recover an onside kick and Palisade was able to hang on.

Maestas rushed for more than 200 yards for Palisade.

    5A: Mullen 38, (2) Pomona 31 (OT)

Mullen rallied from down 24-13 in the third quarter to eventually take a 28-24 lead over the second-ranked Panthers with seven minutes remaining.

Pomona went up 31-28 with a minute remaining, and then Mullen hit a field goal to send it to overtime.

Once there, the Mustangs pulled off the biggest upset of the young season.

    [divider]

    5A: Arapahoe 17, (5) Grandview 14

Arapahoe pulled off the upset thanks to the above field goal with a little over a minute to play.

The Warriors led 7-0 at the half after Mitch Pennetta’s fumble recovery for a score. Grandview tied it up, but then Pete Mitchell hit Connor Williams for a 69-yard passing touchdown to give Arapahoe another lead.

Arapahoe is now 3-0, including two wins over ranked teams.

    [divider]

    6-man: (1) Fleming 66, (3) Pawnee 22

Fleming was up 24-6 at the half, then exploded in the second half to take the important 6-man matchup.

“We came out aggressively,” Wildcats coach John King told the Scoreboard Show. “We just executed really well. We kind of went right at them and actually probably ran the ball more tonight than we have been lately.”

    [divider]

    5A: (7) Regis Jesuit 19, (9) Cherokee Trail  14

The Raiders jumped out to a 13-0 lead at halftime, and held on for the important top-10 win.

Cherokee Trail cut it to 13-7 in the third quarter, but Regis Jesuit pushed it back to 19-7 midway through the fourth quarter.

The Cougars did score again in the final minutes, but Regis Jesuit got a game-ending interception.

    [divider]

    5A: Horizon 18, (8) Fairview 14

Horizon rallied from a 14-0 hole to score the game’s final 18 points and pull the upset.

The Hawks cut into that lead to make it 14-12 at half, then took the lead on Jared Jiron’s 1-yard touchdown with 2:15 to go in the third quarter.

Horizon made a goal-line stand in the fourth quarter, and then recovered a muffed punt with two minutes left to hold on and win.

The Knights had won 20 consecutive games in the regular season prior to Friday’s loss.

    [divider]

    4A/3A: (9) Palmer Ridge 48, (9) Lewis Palmer 14

Isaiah Sanders threw for 440 yards and four touchdowns as Palmer Ridge won General Palmer’s Cup over its rival.

Palmer Ridge (3-0) stretched its lead to 28-0 before Lewis-Palmer finally got on the board, and then cruised from there.
