  • 2A girls soccer semifinal roundup: Vail Mountain moves to title game

DENVER — Tess Johnson looked up and saw two seconds. She slid — and scored the goal and put Vail Mountain into the first-ever Class 2A girls soccer title game.

Johnson, a freshman, beat the buzzer at halftime to give top-seeded Vail Mountain a 1-0 lead. Officially, she scored with 1.5 seconds remaining. It held up as the lone goal as the Gore Rangers (15-1-0) beat No. 4 Denver Christian in the semifinals.

“We had been talking about playing to the last second and not giving up,” Johnson said after the game. “I saw the ball go over the defense, and I just ran for it.

“It’s all I needed to do, just to get it past the goalie. It was really breath-taking, though, because I heard the cheer and I heard the buzzer go. I got chills.”

Vail Mountain got possession of the ball in its own end with 17 seconds remaining. A few quick passes later, and the Gore Rangers were streaking down the right sideline toward Denver Christian’s net.

A lofted through ball found its way to Johnson, who then tucked it away.

“It was really just a blue-collar goal,” said Vail Mountain coach Bob Bandoni. “We had people scrambling, everybody fighting, and that’s what we talk about, is out-competing the opponents.

“It obviously was frayed around the edges,” he added. “It wasn’t completely structured the way we do it, but that’s the way we need to fight to get goals like that. That was critical timing for us.”

Bandoni added that Denver Christian was “the best team we’ve played.” The win avenged a 4-1 loss to the Crusaders on March 27.

“They were tough,” he said. “I mean they really made us play.”

Vail Mountain will play the winner of the second semifinal at 5 p.m. next Tuesday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

It is the first title game appearance for Vail Mountain in the history of the school’s girls soccer program.

“We’re the first team to do it, and it’s just and honor,” Johnson said.

Liv Cramer broke a scoreless tie with 5 1/2 minutes remaining to lift Dawson to the title game.

Both teams had chances throughout, but nothing came to fruition for most of the game. That is, until Cramer broke in alone and tucked a shot in the bottom left corner of the net.

The win means Dawson will reach the title game for the second time in school history. The Mustangs also went to 3A’s title game in 2009, but lost.

No. 3-seeded Dawson moved on to the Class 2A girls soccer semifinals with a 4-0 win over No. 6 Colorado Rocky Mountain on Friday evening.

The Mustangs seized the win on the strength of a 2-0 first-half lead on a night when the rain just seemed to keep coming … and coming.

Hannah Isenhart gave Dawson a lead 20 minutes in, and Morgan Powers added a second on a penalty kick 13 minutes later following a handball in the box.

The game was delayed a half-hour from its original 5 p.m. kickoff.

The Crusaders went on to win 4-0.

    (2) Front Range Christian 5, (7) Evangelical Christian 0

Front Range Christian took a 3-0 halftime lead, then cruised to the win to advance to the state semifinals.

The Falcons are now 14-1-1, with a lone loss this season to Vail Mountain, the 2A tournament’s top seed.

    (1) Vail Mountain 4, (9) Clear Creek 0

The top seed moved on with a convincing win in the quarterfinals.

The win sets up a rematch with Denver Christian, which is the only team to beat Vail Mountain this season. That game was a 4-1 Denver Christian win on March 27.

  • The Classical Academy returns to No. 1 spot in 4A girls soccer

The Classical Academy is back on top of the Class 4A girls soccer ranking.

The Titans, who were supplanted by Evergreen two weeks, returned to the top of 4A with eight of the 14 first-place votes this week.

Evergreen, which was upset by Valor Christian, dropped to No. 3. Valor is No. 2 this week.

The other three No. 1 teams — ThunderRidge (5A), Colorado Academy (3A) and Front Range Christian (2A) — all remain the same.

In 5A, Cherry Creek joined this week’s ranking. The Bruins came in at No. 9.

There were no newcomers in 4A. The 3A poll added No. 10 Frontier Academy, while 2A added CS School (No. 5).

Columbine, last year’s Class 5A champion, returned to the girls soccer rankings this week.

The Rebels (7-2-0) are No. 8 in CHSAANow.com’s 5A poll, and actually just won a title game rematch with Ralston Valley last week.

There was a lot of shakeup to the 5A rankings, including Mountain Vista’s rise to No. 2 after beating last week’s No. 2 Rock Canyon.

Grandview also made a big jump in going from No. 8 to No. 4.

Other newcomers this week include No. 9 Cheyenne Mountain and No. 10 Littleton in 4A; and No. 9 Middle Park in 3A.

A week after three new No. 1 teams dotted the rankings, all four top teams held firm in their respective classifications. Those are ThunderRidge (5A), Evergreen (4A), Colorado Academy (3A) and Front Range Christian (2A).

Three new No. 1 teams sit atop this week’s girls soccer rankings from CHSAANow.com.

ThunderRidge (5A), Evergreen (4A) and Front Range Christian (2A) all rose to the top of their respective rankings.

T-Ridge beat Rock Canyon in a showdown of top-2 teams last week. Rock Canyon dropped to No. 2 this week.

Behind them, Broomfield rose to No. 3, Mountain Vista is fourth and Rocky Mountain rounds out the top five. There were no new teams to this week’s 5A poll.

Evergreen takes over the 4A ranking with eight of the 12 first-place votes. The Classical Academy, last week’s No. 1, got the other four votes. Both teams are 9-0-0.

There was a lot of movement in 4A, which also added No. 7 Windsor, No. 9 Niwot and No. 10 Silver Creek.

Front Range Christian, meanwhile, regained its spot atop 2A following a 2-1 win over then-No. 1 Denver Christian.

DC fell to No. 3. Vail Mountain is second.

In 3A, Colorado Academy is the lone No. 1 team to hold its spot from last week. That ranking added SkyView Academy at No. 10.

Three new teams joined the Class 5A girls soccer rankings this week.

Cherokee Trail (No. 8), Rocky Mountain (No. 9) and Grandview (No. 10) all joined CHSAANow.com’s poll.

Rock Canyon continued to lead 5A at the top, receiving eight of the 11 first-place votes. ThunderRidge is second, Mountain Vista is third, Broomfield is fourth and Arapahoe rounds out the top five.

The No. 1 teams in 4A (The Classical Academy) and 3A (Colorado Academy) remained the same. However, Denver Christian took over the top spot in 2A.

The Crusaders got five of the six first-place votes in that class, and edged Vail Mountain, which is No. 2. Vail Mountain handed former No. 1 Front Range Christian its first loss last week.

  • All-state skiing teams for 2014-15 season

The 2014-15 all-state skiing teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created based upon results at the state meet. Skiers of the year were selected based upon the number of team points they produced during the meet.

Skimeister is a season-long event conducted by the Colorado High School Ski League which honors the top skier in both disciplines.
