Fossil Ridge and Ralston Valley have joined this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A girls basketball poll.

Fossil Ridge is off to a 4-0 start, including in-state wins over Chaparral and Fruita Monument, as well as a 2-0 showing in Wyoming. The SaberCats are No. 9 this week.

Ralston Valley is No. 10 in the poll. The Mustangs went 2-1 last week with a loss to Rock Canyon, but beat Cherry Creek and then-No. 3 Arapahoe. Arapahoe dropped out this week.

The No. 1 teams from last week all stayed put. So Regis Jesuit (5A), Broomfield (4A), Holy Family (3A), Yuma (2A) and Caliche (1A) all continue to lead their respective polls.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

  • Valor Christian’s McCaffrey named Gatorade player of the year in Colorado

Valor running back Christian McCaffrey (5) outruns the Fairview defense for a long gain during the CHSAA 5A state championship game between Valor Christian and Fairview high schools, Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium. (Kai Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Valor Christian star Christian McCaffrey has been named the Gatorade football player of the year in Colorado for the second year in a row.

The award, announced Thursday, “recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field,” according to a release.

McCaffrey, a senior, also won Colorado’s Gatorade player of the year award as a junior last season. He is the state’s first two-time winner since former Cherry Creek star Darnell McDonald (1996-97). The award started in 1986.

McCaffrey had 46 total touchdowns this season, the most of any player in the state. Included were 27 rushing scores and 16 receiving scores. He helped the Eagles win a fifth-consecutive championship on Saturday with a 56-16 win over Fairview. In that game, McCaffrey had 221 total yards and four touchdowns.

“Christian’s impact on the field is irreplaceable,” Eaglecrest coach Mike Schmitt said in a release. “We could not tackle or even contain him, and that puts a lot of pressure on your offense knowing that when he gets the ball he can literally score at any moment.”

McCaffrey, the son of former Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, ends his career with four championships. He had 8,845 all-purpose yards and 141 touchdowns.

McCaffrey is now a finalist for the national Gatorade player of the year award, which will be announced later in December.

    DENVER — They’re calling it a V-Peat.

Valor Christian’s most recent football title was dominant and impressive. And it was thorough. The Eagles handled Fairview in Saturday’s Class 5A final, 56-16. It was their fifth-consecutive championship over three classifications. The school also won 3A in 2009, 4A in 2010 and 2011, and 5A in 2012.

“It’s been a run, man,” said Valor Christian senior Christian McCaffrey. “We’ve battled every day since our freshman year. Every day in practice, film, in the classroom. It’s been real. Words can’t explain the ride we’ve had. We’ve worked so hard for this. Even last year after the state game, we weren’t satisfied because we knew we had one more year to go. It’s just a gratifying moment right now for all of us.”

Things started early on Saturday. Valor Christian scored three touchdowns on its first four offensive plays of the game. It was 21-0 with 5:50 to play in the first quarter, but it seemed like a heartbeat.

As is usually the case, it was McCaffrey, the Eagles’ star, at the center of things. His 221 total yards and four total touchdowns led the way in the rout. Those numbers are all the more impressive considering he had just one offensive touch of the ball in the second half.

“I think that shows his versatility,” Valor Christian coach Rod Sherman said.

Yet it was Valor’s defense that really established the tone early. Lineman Clarke Cooper had three sacks on Fairview’s first three drives as the Eagles really got after Knights quarterback Anders Hill.

Fairview entered the day averaging 45 points per game, second only in the state to Valor’s 46.3. It’s an offense that leads Colorado in passing, thanks in large part to the combo of Hill and Sam Martin, who now holds multiple state receiving records.

So Valor Christian’s devised a plan: the Eagles rotated its defensive linemen — “To keep guys fresh,” Sherman said — and also put an extra defensive back on the field for most plays.

“We knew they had a great quarterback and a great receiver — one of the best duos in the state — so we just tried to lock them down as much as we could,” said Valor Christian senior Marcus Wilson.

It worked. Hill was bothered by the rush most of the day, though he did finish with 208 yards and a touchdown.

Wilson and Brian Dawkins Jr. were everywhere in the defensive backfield, and Dawkins had an interception.

“I think sometimes in our program, the offense is flashy, and it overshadows defense. I think we play great defense,” Sherman said. “Even when I talked this week about the track meet (Saturday’s game) was going to be, you could kind of tell it didn’t sit will with our defensive guys, because they have a lot of pride.”

On the other side, Valor got a knockout day from its own quarterback, A.J. Cecil. Cecil was 15-of-16 for 245 yards and four touchdowns. His only incompletion was an early interception.

“I thought A.J. played arguably his best game of the year,” Sherman said.

And what a day to have it.

“Sitting behind that line,” Cecil said of his offensive line, “you literally have all day to be able to throw the ball. ”

By the time Saturday’s game ended, Valor Christian, the No. 2 seed, had routed top-ranked Fairview.

“We knew coming into this game that Fairview had an awesome team,” McCaffrey said. “We really had our work cut out for us all week. To win like that is definitely something special, especially against a great team like that.”

Martin, the Fairview senior, had 129 yards and a touchdown on Saturday. He now owns state records for receptions (111) and yards (1,848).

In addition to McCaffrey’s outpouring, Valor Christian got rushing touchdowns from Eric Lee and Stone Watson. Wilson and Nathan Watmore also had receiving scores.

  • New coach Sherman has Valor Christian football back in title game

DENVER — Not much has changed in Valor Christian’s football program from a year ago. And that’s exactly what Rod Sherman had hoped for.

Sherman is in his first year as head coach of the Eagles, who have made a return trip to the Class 5A championship game where they’ll face Fairview. He’s been the school’s athletic director since it opened in 2007, and was also the offensive coordinator under former coach Brent Vieselmeyer.

When Vieselmeyer left for a college assistant position at Houston Baptist in January, Sherman became the interim coach. Eventually, he became, simply, the coach.

“Coach Sherman has been with us since the beginning, but he’s really emphasized that just because one coach leaves, it’s not the end of the world,” said Valor Christian senior Christian McCaffrey. “We still have our main principles that coach Vieselmeyer implemented into our program.

“(Sherman has) done an excellent job at it and us players have the upmost respect for him. He helps us with recruiting, trying to get into college and all that. He’s like a mentor to all of us, and we really look up to him and admire what he does.”

Vieselmeyer was 55-11 in five seasons. He led Valor to titles in 3A, 4A (twice) and 5A. So, yeah, that’s a lot to follow. Yet it wasn’t like Sherman was an outsider. He had a major hand in building the program from the ground up. Perhaps that’s why the transition has been so smooth.

“Because I really partnered with Brent over the years, I asked our players, and they don’t feel like anything really’s changed in the program,” Sherman said. “We wanted a seamless transition.”

This year, Valor Christian is 12-1 and seeded second in the 5A playoffs. The Eagles are in a title game for the fifth year in a row; they’re at Mile High for the fourth-straight time. That’s a major performance for a first-year head coach at the 5A level. But Sherman, always the humble type, deflects most of the credit.

“We decided as a staff, we were going to come together and we were going to have shared leadership, shared responsibility,” Sherman said. “It’s not about me being head coach, it’s really about all of us sharing in those roles. What really made the transition wonderful for me was our 18 seniors that embodied faith-based leadership, how much they cared about their teammates. It’s really just been a joy.

“I don’t think I stand up to lead them. I think I’m able to stand with our coaches and our players together.”

Said McCaffrey: “That’s something we also look up. He gives us all the credit, he gives the other coaches the credit, and the community the credit. When really, a lot of it is him. He puts so much into it, and I think that’s what makes him the coach and the person that he is.”

Sherman often talks about relationships and journeys. He says his most rewarding time as head coach so far has been the team’s three-day retreat to Buena Vista before the season. He’s not one to focus on winning, though it’s something he’s done a lot of this season.

“I think society will look and say, ‘Winning is successful.’ Really, for us, winning is a total byproduct,” Sherman said. “We wanted to buy another week of having the players and coaches together and that community. So we don’t, in our program, talk about winning.

“Certainly, on game day, we’re going to play hard, but it’s more about the process and the journey. That, for me, has been the most rewarding part: the relationship with the coaches and the relationship with the players.”

Mind you, Sherman’s doing this while managing a dual role — that of athletic director and head football coach, one that’s not at all common at the 5A level.

“There are busy days, but this week’s nice,” Sherman said. “We’re out of school this week, so we have a little more time to prepare (for the championship game). But, really, our staff has taken on that responsibility.”

Sherman has continued to direct a potent offense — and, actually, made it even more potent. From 2009-12, Valor Christian averaged 40.4 points per game. This season, the Eagles are averaging 46.5 points per game, the most in school history.

A lot of that is McCaffrey, the best player in the state, and among the best to ever play in Colorado. Now a senior, he’s scored a state-best 42 total touchdowns this season.

But Sherman has also developed quarterback A.J. Cecil, who has thrown for 1,974 yards and 29 touchdowns against just seven interceptions. Cecil is also the team’s second-leading rusher with 406 yards and eight touchdowns.

So it makes sense that Valor Christian has made its return to a state title game. New coach, same result.

“Our practices are run the same, our film sessions are the same,” McCaffrey said. “With a couple of new players here and there, and some freshmen moving up, I would say our principles are the same and our main things we need to focus on are all the same. I think that’s why, despite the fact that players come and go, we’ve held up strong.”
