  • La Junta football stages epic comeback to stun Bayfield in 2A semis

LA JUNTA — Clint Buderus’ offense is not designed to overcome a two-touchdown deficit with about eight minutes to go in a football game.

So even he seemed stunned when his La Junta players celebrated on the field after beating Bayfield 14-13 in the Class 2A state semifinals.

It took a John Nuschy touchdown pass to Matthew Espinoza and a botched two-point conversion attempt that somehow succeeded to get the job done.

Eight minutes earlier, the Tigers had yet to score a point. It was shades of last years playoff loss to the Wolverines (9-3 overall) all over again.

“We were talking about (that loss) the whole week,” Espinoza said. “We wanted revenge. They embarrassed us on their field last year so we needed some revenge.”

But overthinking things resulted in a slow start for the Tigers (12-0) and Bayfield was able to take advantage. Josh Westbrook found Brian Mashak on a fly route and connected with him for an 84-yard touchdown pass.

The extra point was no good, but the Wolverines had a 6-0 lead.

The defenses then started dominate the game and neither team was really able to find momentum. It wasn’t until the closing seconds of the third quarter that things began to look dire for the Tigers as Westbrook once again found Mashak, this time of a 64-yard touchdown pass.

Westbrook ended the game with 169 passing yards and two touchdowns. Not bad for a team also built to run the ball and wear down its opponent.

“I knew that we had a chance to make some big plays,” Bayfield coach Gary Heide said. “We made two, but we needed three I guess.”

In fact, they nearly had that third.

The Tigers finally got on the board with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Nuschy to Apela Furtado-Tom, but like Bayfield’s first touchdown, missed the extra point. The Wolverines got the ball back with a chance to burn clock and potentially regain a two-score lead.

Carl Heide broke off a 29-yard run off a reverse to get the ball deep into La Junta territory. But it was the strength of La Junta’s team that showed up just in the nick of time. Will Tyler intercepted Westbrook and gave the Tigers new life with 6:10 remaining in the game.

“We had our back against the wall and kids just made plays,” Buderus said. “That’s all it came down to.”

And they did it when they needed to the most. Nuschy threw his team on his shoulders and he marched the Tigers down the field looking to tie the game. When they got in the red zone, they went with a couple of big runs to Dax Bender, setting up second down inside of the Bayfield 10-yard line.

That’s Nuschy found Espinoza on the outside post, sending Tiger Stadium into a frenzy.

“Right as the play was called I knew it was going to be open,” Espinoza said. “I’m not used to running that, it’s usually Apela Furtado-Tom running that route. But when I got that number called, I was ready.”

As La Junta lined up for the extra point, they were called for a false start, prompting a timeout for Buderus and a discussion on the sideline.

“I wanted to go for two right away,” Nuschy said. “After we backed up, we knew we had to go for two. We wanted that win.”

On the two-point conversion, the Tigers learned sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. Furtado-Tom took a handoff off a bobbled snap, was pursued by the Bayfield defensive line and lost his footing in the process.

He was able to stay up and throw the ball to the end zone where it found the waiting hand of Kain DiRezza.

“That was one of the luckiest things I’ve ever seen,” Nuschy said.

    La Junta had 14-13 lead.

And just to be safe, on the ensuing kickoff, a little squib kick found some space and the Tigers fell on the ball.

As a result, they’ll host the 2A state title game against Kent Denver, a team they beat at home earlier in the season.

“We’re just going to enjoy this and get back to work on Monday,” Buderus said. “I know Kent Denver is much improved. They’ll be as tough as Bayfield.”

Which means all La Junta has to do is make plays at the right time and hope some that luck holds over from Saturday. If that’s the case, they could be hoisting state championship gold in a week.

  • 2016 Volleyball regional brackets, matchups released

    (Renee Bourcier/CHSAANow.com)
    (Renee Bourcier/CHSAANow.com)

The 2016 regional volleyball brackets were released on Monday, and the qualifying schools all found out who they’d be playing and where they’d be going.

    Find every regional bracket here:

The 3A-5A brackets had their fields set by the RPI, and the teams were seeded by the final RPI standings, as well, with some changes made due to geography and first-round league matchups. Teams in 1A and 2A qualified for the regional round after playing in districts last week.

In Class 5A, it was Fossil Ridge who earned the top overall seed after finishing with the highest RPI rating. As a result, the Sabercats will their region.

Rock Canyon, Fairview, Chatfield, Denver East, Chaparral, Mountain Vista, Rampart, Fruita Monument Arapahoe, Loveland and Ralston Valley are the other 5A host teams.

In 4A, undefeated Lewis-Palmer rightfully sits in the No. 1 spot. The Rangers are looking to reclaim the 4A title that they lost to Cheyenne Mountain last year.

Along with the Rangers, it will be Eagle Valley, Cheyenne Mountain, Montrose, Pueblo West, Valor Christian, Holy Family, Berthoud, Thomas Jefferson, Silver Creek, Niwot and Palisade hosting for 4A regionals.

Eaton stands tall as the top overall seed in 3A regionals and is looking to claim a fourth-consecutive title in 2016.

Valley, Colorado Springs Christian, University, Bayfield, Resurrection Christian, Faith Christian, Middle Park, Salida, St. Mary’s, Sterling and Pagosa Springs are the other teams that earned the right to host.

After the completion of district play in 2A, the eight host-site teams were determined. Unlike 3A-5A, which is seeded by RPI, 2A regional brackets are seeded by district results.

Hoehne, Dayspring Christian, Paonia, Denver Christian, Del Norte, Yuma, Telluride and Colorado Springs School will all host regional play this weekend.

Like 2A, the 1A regional brackets are determined by the outcome of district play. As a result, it will be La Veta, Kit Carson, Flagler, Rocky Mountain Lutheran, Nucla, Springfield, Kiowa and Weldon Valley who will serve as regional hosts.

The results of regionals will set the state tournament pairings for all classes.

Heading into the final week of regular season play at the 8-man level, there is a new No. 1 team in the CHSAANow.com football rankings.

Sedgwick County has taken over the top spot in the 8-man poll ahead of its showdown with No. 7 Dayspring Christian on Saturday.

Sargent, which stood tall in last week’s rankings, dropped only one spot to No. 2 and remains undefeated on the year.

Fresh off a win over Justice, Pikes Peak Christian jumped two spots to land at No. 8 this week.

There were no new teams in the 8-man rankings.

Pomona continues to hold a strong grip on the No. 1 spot in the 5A rankings and is continuing to beat every team that the state of Colorado can throw its way.

The majority of the 5A poll did remain consistent from last week’s rankings except that Chaparral joins the poll at No. 10.

In 4A, Denver South is still the top team while Chatfield (No. 2), Pine Creek (No. 3) and Ponderosa (No. 4) all held their spots from last week’s rankings.

Greeley West jumped two spots to No. 7 while two Pueblo-area teams climbed back into the poll as Pueblo South comes in at No. 9 and Pueblo West lands at No. 10.

Thanks to a thrilling win over Canon City on Friday, Discovery Canyon is still the top team in the 3A poll with Pueblo East jumping one spot to land at No. 2.

At No. 10, Conifer is the only new team in the 3A poll.

As La Junta continues to win, it continues to hold its spot as the unanimous No. 1 team in 2A.

Defending 2A champ, Bayfield, jumps two spots to No. 5 and Sterling makes a three-spot jump to come in at No. 6.

There were no new teams in the 2A rankings.

With a win over Cornerstone Christian, Strasburg still sits atop the 1A poll, but has a new team on its heels as Meeker jumps one spot to No. 2.

Bennett (No. 3) and Cedaredge (No. 7) each jumped two spots this week.

No new teams broke into the 1A rankings.

There were no 6-man rankings this week as regular season play concluded over the weekend and the state playoff bracket was released on Sunday.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Volleyball rankings: Fossil Ridge moves up to No. 2 in 5A

Fossil Ridge is making a case to be considered as a top team in the state after jumping to No. 2 in the Class 5A CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings this week.

The SaberCats are winners of three-straight and will conclude regular season play this week when they travel to the Cheyenne Mountain tournament this weekend.

Mountain Vista made a two-spot jump this week after wins over Chaparral and Highlands Ranch last week.

Fruita Monument is the only new team to join the 5A poll, coming in at No. 10.

After a clean sweep of Cheyenne Mountain in the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference title game, Lewis-Palmer remains the No. 1 team in 4A.

The top of the 4A rankings certainly have a different look as Pueblo West jumps three spots to No. 2 and Eagle Valley (No. 4) and Montrose (No. 5) each jumped four spots to land in the top five.

Berthoud is the lone newcomer in 4A at No. 10.

In 3A, Eaton still sits atop the rankings while University hung on to its spot at No. 2.

St. Mary’s (No. 8) and Delta (No. 10) are the two new teams to break into the 3A poll.

Dayspring Christian still sits at No. 1 in the 2A, but it was the Colorado Springs School that made a noticeable jump, going from No. 4 to No. 2 heading into the final week of the regular season.

At No. 10, West Grand is the only new team in the 2A rankings.

Like all other classes this week, 1A saw the No. 1 spot go unchanged as Fleming held its ground.

Flagler (No. 4) and McClave (No. 5) did gain some ground on the top teams as both teams jumped two spots from a week ago.

Kiowa is the lone newcomer to the 1A poll, coming in at No. 8.

  • Football roundup: Mullen storms back to beat Fairview

Mullen rallied from down 23-0 at halftime to stun Fairview with a 37-30 win in a top-10 game in Class 5A football on Friday.

The second-ranked Mustangs scored right as the second half opened, and though No. 8 Fairview answered to make it 30-7 in the third quarter, Mullen just wouldn’t quit. It was 30-14, then 30-22, and then it was tied.

Finally, with 2:16 remaining, the Mustangs took their first lead of the game. It was 37-30, with Mullen scoring 30 unanswered points.

Fairview did have a final drive, but Mullen turned the Knights away.

Marcus McElroy had three touchdowns for the Mustangs.

    (9) Holy Family 43, (8) Mead 35

Holy Family picked up a big top-10 win this season that moved the Tigers into sole possession of first place in the Tri-Valley League.

“We talked about what it would take to put ourselves in a situation to win a league championship, and they responded really well,” Holy Family coach Mike Gabriel told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “It was a great battle.”

Holy Family led 9-0 after the first quarter, and 22-13 at the half. But Mead kept fighting, and kept the game close until the end.

In fact, Mead had one final drive that Holy Family had to turn away.

“With a few seconds left, they still had a shot,” Gabriel said. “Our kids responded to put it away.”

    [divider]

    3A: (9) Sterling 27, (6) Weld Central 13

Not only did Sterling hand Weld Central its first loss this season, the Tigers also snapped their 12-game winning streak, which was the longest in the state.

“It was good battle across the board, two teams that kind of wanted it pretty bad,” coach Rob Busmente told the Scoreboard Show. “It came down to two plays that we were fortunate enough to be able to capitalize on.”

Sterling led throughout, going up 7-6 after the first quarter, and 20-13 at halftime and after the third quarter. The Tigers added another score early in the fourth quarter to finish the scoring.

Sterling is now 5-3 following an 0-3 start, and sits in first place in its league, the Patriot East, at 4-0.

“It’s been good, it’s been fun,” Busmente said. “The kids have been showing a lot of resiliency and a lot of perseverance to go through some of those things. We ran a pretty tough gauntlet there at the beginning with some of those top teams.

“We were able to come back and regroup and put a pretty good push here toward the end,” he added. “Hopefully we can keep riding this momentum as we’re riding out the season.”

    [divider]

    2A: (7) Bayfield 23, (5) Delta 7

Bayfield broke open a close game on a pick-six early in the fourth quarter, and is now 6-2.

The game was tied at 7 at halftime.

“I thought our team came prepared to play,” coach Gary Heide told the Scoreboard Show. “We just felt that if we stayed with it play by play by play, that we would be the one to make the plays in the second half.”

“They are one tough team,” Heide added of Delta. “They are going to be reckoned with in the playoffs.”

  • Volleyball rankings: Dayspring Christian moves up to No. 1 in 2A

It’s Dayspring Christian’s week to shine in the Class 2A CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings.

Powered by sweeps over Gilpin County and Dawson, the Eagles are the new No. 1 team in the rankings. They are the only new No. 1 team in any class this week.

Paonia, who sat at No. 1 a week ago, dropped only one spot to No. 2.

Yuma made a noticeable jumping, gaining three spots to land at No. 3. There were no new  teams in the 2A poll this week.

Rock Canyon held its spot as the top team in 5A, but it was Arapahoe, not Fossil Ridge, coming in at No. 2. The Sabercats dropped one spot to land at No. 3.

Loveland was the lone newcomer in 5A, joining the rankings at No. 10.

Lewis-Palmer and Cheyenne Mountain remained at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in this week’s 4A poll.

The two traditional volleyball powers will face-off Thursday in a game that will in all likelihood decide the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference Championship.

Montrose jumped into the 4A poll at No. 9, the only newcomer this week.

Like 5A and 4A, the top team in the 3A poll went unchanged as Eaton holds a firm grip on that spot.

Valley made the big jump this week to land at No. 3, two spots better than last week’s rankings.

Pagosa Springs (No. 9) and Coal Ridge (No. 10) were the two newcomers to the 3A poll.

Fleming hung on to the No. 1 spot in 1A with Kit Carson still biting its heels at No. 2.

Weldon Valley (No. 4) and Nucla (No. 5) each gained a spot from a week ago.

There were no new teams in the 1A poll.

  • Football rankings: Mesa Ridge, Hi-Plains join respective polls

    Mesa Ridge football team
Mesa Ridge has joined the 4A football poll. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

With the regular season hitting the home stretch, the top teams in the CHSAANow.com football rankings are all digging their heels in.

In fact, amongst all seven classes, there are a total of two new teams to break into the top 10 polls.

Mesa Ridge (Class 4A) and Hi-Plains (6-man) are the only teams that make an appearance in this week’s rankings as newcomers.

In 5A, Pomona still hangs on to the No. 1 spot after beating Rock Canyon 44-14 on Friday night.

Cherry Creek is starting to climb back up the poll, jumping two spots from last week to land at No. 8.

Denver South is still the No. 1 team in 4A with Chatfield hanging on to the No. 2 spot.

Broomfield climbs to two spots to No. 4 thanks to a big win over Loveland.

Mesa Ridge breaks into the 4A poll at No. 10.

With Discovery Canyon still on top, the entire 3A poll went unchanged from a week ago.

La Junta erased any doubt about whether it should be the No. 1 team in 2A with a dominant 40-0 win over Manitou Springs on Friday night.

The Mustangs dropped to No. 9 following the loss.

Resurrection Christian climbed a spot to No. 2 and Delta made the biggest jump on the week, gaining two spots to land at No. 6.

Strasburg remains the No. 1 team in 1A with Paonia hanging on to the No. 2 spot.

Cedaredge gained the most ground with a three-spot jump to come in at No. 6 this week.

By a one-point margin, Sargent is still the top team in 8-man. Sedgwick County comes in at No. 2 with an equal number of first-place votes as the Farmers.

Akron jumped two spots to land at No. 4 while Hoehne (No. 6) and Pikes Peak Christian (No. 9) each moved up one spot from the last set of rankings.

Fleming keeps a firm hold on 6-man’s No. 1 spot with Kit Carson and Stratton/Liberty coming in at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

Newcomer Hi-Plains joins the 6-man poll at No. 9.

  • Volleyball rankings: University inches closer to Eaton in 3A

It’s not going to be easy to knock Eaton off its perch as the top team in the Class 3A CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings, but University is certainly making moves with those hopes.

The Bulldogs jumped to No. 2 in the rankings this week and are one of only four teams to even take a set from the Reds.

Bayfield also jumped up in this week’s poll, coming in at No. 7 which is two spots better than their previous ranking.

No new teams broke into the 3A poll this week.

Rock Canyon remains the No. 1 team in the 5A poll, but Arapahoe is certainly gaining attention as the Warriors jump to No. 3 this week. They were sitting at No. 6 a week ago, but going 2-0 – including a win over Cherry Creek – certainly helped in their leap.

Fairview is the lone addition to the 5A rankings, landing at No. 10.

A still undefeated Lewis-Palmer team hangs on to the No. 1 spot in 4A with a unanimous vote.

Cheyenne Mountain and Valor Christian also held on to their positions at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

Pueblo West has continued to play well and jumped two spots to land at No. 4.

Thomas Jefferson (No. 9) and D’Evelyn (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 4A poll.

Paonia is still the No. 1 team in 1A with Dayspring Christian still sitting firm at No. 2.

There is a new No. 3 team, however, as the Colorado Springs School jumped two spots from last week’s rankings.

There are two new teams in the 2A poll this week as Fowler breaks in at No. 9 and John Mall comes in at No. 10.

Like all other classes, the No. 1 spot in 1A went unchanged as Fleming still sits on top of the poll.

La Veta jumped to No. 3 this week after improving to 16-0 on the season.

Otis (No. 9) and Prairie (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 1A poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.
