Valor Christian returned to the Class 4A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings this week after narrowly beating Golden on Wednesday.

The Eagles, now 11-9, are ranked No. 10 this week.

The top three teams in 4A remained the same with No. 1 Pueblo South leading the pack. No. 2 Evergreen avoided an upset against Green Mountain to stay in the hunt.

The biggest mover of the rankings goes to Heritage Christian (16-0) in 1A. The school is up three spots in this week’s poll at No. 2. The Eagles defeated No. 8 Briggsdale to leap in the rankings behind No. 1 Kit Carson.

In 5A, Ralston Valley continued its 17 game win streak to keep pace at No. 3 in the rankings.

5A’s lone shakeup comes with Fossil Ridge and Fairview. Fossil Ridge, ranked No. 10 in last week’s poll, switched spots with Fairview at No. 7.

3A added Faith Christian at No. 10, and Eaton moved up two spots to No. 8.

Paonia stayed at No. 1 in 2A with minor shakeup beneath them.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Pueblo West boys basketball returns to No. 1 in 4A

Pueblo West Valor Christian boys basketball
    (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

Pueblo West does not like falling out of the top spot of the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings.

For the second time in three weeks, the Cyclones have regained the No. 1 spot after falling out (without a loss) of it.

Valor Christian jumped a couple of spots to land at No. 2. But that’s where most of the consistency in the 4A poll ends.

Holy Family made a five-spot jump to break into the top five and the bottom half of the poll saw three new teams. Northridge is in at No. 6, Lewis-Palmer is back in the poll at No. 8 and Sierra also makes its return at No. 9.

ThunderRidge has shown no desire to drop out of the top spot of the 5A, despite the solid play of the rest of the teams in the top-five, each of whom also held onto their spots.

Doherty re-enters the rankings at No. 7 this week, the only new team to enter the poll.

Resurrection Christian remains the No. 1 team in 3A, but Colorado Springs Christian jumps up to No. 2 thanks to a last-second with over this week’s No. 4, Manitou Springs.

At No. 10, Machebeuf is the lone newcomer in the 3A rankings.

    Dawson Highland boys basketball
    (Katie Pickrell/CHSAANOW.com)

Highland and Sedgwick Country remain the top two teams in the 2A rankings, but the No. 3 spot has a new look in the form of Del Norte.

The 2A poll had no new teams this week.

The poll in 1A overall looks very similar to what it was last week. Holly and Cheyenne Wells remain at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively.

Sierra Grande jumped one spot to No. 3 and Rocky Mountain Lutheran also jumped a spot to come in at No. 8.

Like 2A, there were no new teams in the 1A rankings.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

    (Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)

George Washington is getting some well-deserved recognition in the Class 4A girls basketball rankings.

The Patriots have broken into the poll, landing at No. 10 this week. They are winners of nine of their last 10 games and sit at 14-2 this season.

Pueblo South (No. 1) and Evergreen (No. 2) remain in their spots from last week, but Pueblo West made a three-spot jump to No. 3 after beating No. 7 Pueblo East in overtime.

Grandview stays put at No. 1 in the 5A, along with the overall top six teams from last week.

No new teams broke into the 5A poll.

St. Mary’s is still firmly entrenched in the No. 1 spot in 3A. Sterling (No. 2), Liberty Common (No. 3) and Lamar (No. 4) also hold on to their positions from a week ago.

Olathe was the lone newcomer to the 3A rankings at No. 8.

Paonia is still No. 1 in 2A, but Yuma made a two-spot jump to come into the week as the new No. 2 team.

Simla breaks in this week, coming in at No. 8.

Jim Elliot is the only new team to make the 1A poll this week, coming in at No. 10. Kit Carson is still the top-ranked team and the top seven spots overall are unchanged from a week ago.

It’s been hard not to pay attention to Sand Creek boys basketball this season. They have one of the top players in the state in D’Shawn Schwartz and now, they are the No. 1 team in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings.

The Scorpions unseat defending champion Pueblo West, who regained the No. 1 position a week ago.

Silver Creek made an impressive four-spot jump to break into the top five.

Holy Family is the only new team to break into the poll, landing at No. 10.

ThunderRidge remains the No. 1 team in 5A, beating Douglas County in its only game last week.

Thanks to a dominating win over No. 9 Cherry Creek on Wednesday, Eaglecrest jumps a couple of spots to come in at No. 5.

No new teams broke into the 5A rankings this week.

Resurrection Christian keeps the No. 1 spot in 3.

Manitou Springs is still cemented at the No. 2 spot thanks to a win over 2A No. 7 Peyton on Saturday.

Basalt jumps to No. 7, three spots better than last week.

Strasburg is the only new team in the 3A poll, rounding it out at No. 10.

Highland keeps its spot at No. 1 in the 2A poll and beat No. 5 Akron on Friday, further showing that they can contend for a state title.

At No. 8, Crowley County is the only new team to the 2A rankings.

Holly remains the No. 1 team in 1A with Cheyenne Wells and Flagler holding their spots at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

Peetz (No. 7) and Longmont Christian (No. 10) are the two newcomers to the 1A poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Holy Family has played its way back into the Class 4A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings.

The Tigers grabbed wins over Erie and Mead last week, earning them enough votes to be the only new team in the 4A poll. They’re ranked No. 10 this week.

Pueblo South remains the top team in 4A and are still undefeated against Colorado teams this season.

Air Academy (No. 5) and Pueblo West (No. 6) each gained two spots from their position last week.

The 5A poll also had only one new team with Fossil Ridge breaking in at No. 9.

Grandview remains the top team in the class, perhaps even solidifying their position even more after a 70-55 win over No. 7 Cherry Creek.

Fruita Monument comes in at No. 6, two spots better than last week’s rankings.

St. Mary’s took 10 first-place votes to remain the No. 1 team in 3A, with Sterling still right behind the Pirates at No. 2.

Manitou Springs jumped two spots from last week, coming in at No. 10.

Faith Christian (No. 9) and Eaton (No. 10) are the two new teams to the 3A poll.

Paonia still stands as the No. 1 team in 2A thanks to an undefeated record.

Del Norte broke into the top-three, landing at No. 3, two spots better than their position last week. At No. 6, Swink also jumped two places.

At No. 10, Holyoke is the only new team in the 2A poll.

In 1A, Kit Carson is still at No. 1, but Fleming jumps a spot to come in at No. 2. Both teams are still undefeated.

Antonito (No. 3), Kit/Branson (No. 4) and Heritage Christian (No. 5) round out the top half of the rankings. Each of the top five teams received at least one first-place vote.

Cheyenne Wells is the only new team in 1A, coming in at No. 10.

  • Nearly two decades removed from a state title, Highland boys basketball is on the hunt

At the conclusion of the 2013-14 boys basketball season, Highland was anything but a dominant team. The Class 2A program based in Ault finished with a disappointing 7-16 record.

    The mighty had fallen.

The Huskies had seen basketball success before. They had seen the highest of basketball success before. Back in 2000, they beat Weld Central 58-47 in the 3A state title game. They were champions.

Fast forward 14 years. They won a single Patriot League game. Seven games during the course of the entire season.

Fast forward three more years. They are undefeated. They are the No. 1-ranked team in the state. They have the chance to accomplish something special only two years after a poor season.

    Highland boys basketball
Coach Efrin Perez. (Emily Clayton/Highland High School)

“This is my fifth year here at Highland,” coach Efrin Perez said. “The first few years there were a lot of growing pains.”

But then something just kind of happened. There was no gradual increase in the number of the wins. They went from 7-16 to going 19-4 in 2014-15.

Kids like Cole Rouse, who were freshmen on a losing team, decided that no longer would Highland struggle to reach double-digits in the win column.

“Our freshman year, we didn’t do very well,” Rouse said. “It felt great to start winning.”

This isn’t something that happened because a particular class just happens to have a talented group of basketball players. This season, the Huskies are seeing contributions from all classes. Rouse, Reese Anderson and Will Overton might be the three senior leaders, but sophomore Koby Anderson and junior Trey Allmon are every bit at vital to the success of the team.

Perez notes that even freshman Tate Bessire is starting to pull his weight.

And they all do it on both sides of the ball. Highland can score in bunches, but the players truly believe that defense will ultimately lead to whatever success they finish with this season.

    Highland boys basketball
Reese Anderson. (Emily Clayton/Highland High School)

“Everybody is comfortable with this system, they enjoy it,” Perez said. “Defense is what we hang our hat on and it really draws everything. You usually don’t have to work very hard to make everyone love the offensive end, it’s the defensive end that you have to convince them that they can take pride in it.”

The Huskies give up only 42 points per game compared to the nearly 70 that they’re scoring. They’ve fallen short of the state tournament these last few years, but with more experience under their belt it’s hard not to look at the 2000 state championship banner and believe they can put one up right beside it.

“We’ve been really focused to get that state tournament,” Rouse said. “We haven’t been there yet. We just realize that we can make it to state and we can play with anybody.”

They’ll find out if that’s true on Friday night when they host No. 4 Akron. A win of that magnitude will certainly go a long way in giving the Huskies validation of their top ranking.

“It’s No. 1 vs. No. 4,” Rouse said. “They’re a good team and it’s going to test our ability to be able to play with the best. That’ll help us win come tournament time.”
