Valor Christian will have a different look when it opens the season on Saturday. The Eagles unveiled their new uniforms in a YouTube video released Thursday night.

Valor Christian, a four-time defending champion, opens the season against Central (Calif.) at 8 p.m. Saturday. The game will be shown on ESPN2. As has been its custom during Zero Week over the past few years, the school built temporary bleachers on the far side of the field to create additional seating.
The game is the first for Rod Sherman as head coach. Sherman, also Valor’s athletic director, had been offensive coordinator since the school opened in 2007. He took over after former coach Brent Vieselmeyer left to become co-defensive coordinator at Houston Baptist University.

Football is back, and things seem to be picking up right where we left them.
Valor Christian leads the first-ever CHSAANow.com 5A football poll, which is voted on by coaches and media members across the state. The Eagles are four-time defending champions across three classifications, and beat Cherokee Trail to win last year’s 5A crown. Cherokee Trail, not surprisingly, is No. 2 in the preseason poll.
ThunderRidge, a semifinalist a year ago, is third, followed by Cherry Creek and Pomona. Grandview is No. 6 to begin the season, Ralston Valley is No. 7, while Columbine (No. 8), Chaparral (No. 9) and Regis Jesuit (No. 10) round out the 5A poll.
A total of three teams received first-place votes in the ranking: Valor Christian got 14, while Cherokee Trail and Cherry Creek received one each.
Monarch, the defending 4A champion, leads the preseason ranking in that classification, while Denver South, runner-up a year ago, is second. Wheat Ridge, Pine Creek and Pueblo West round out 4A’s top five teams.
In fact, each of the defending champions lead their respective preseason rankings. That includes Silver Creek (3A), Kent Denver (2A), Cedaredge (1A), Hoehne (8-man) and Fleming (6-man).

Valor Christian will open its defense of the Class 5A football championship on ESPN2 against California’s Central High School on Aug. 24.
The game, to be played on the Eagles’ campus in Highlands Ranch, is part of the ESPN High School Football Kickoff. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
It will the first game for new coach Rod Sherman, who takes over following six seasons as offensive coordinator. Sherman, also the school’s athletic director, replaces Brent Vieselmeyer, who is now co-defensive coordinator at Houston Baptist University.
Central, from Fresno, went 11-3 last season and lost in the CIF Central Section Division I championship.
Valor was 12-2 in 2012, and beat Cherokee Trail 9-0 for the 5A title last December. They are led by dynamic running back and Stanford commit Christian McCaffrey.
The Eagles have won four-consecutive championships over three different classifications. Prior to last season’s title, Valor won 4A in 2011 and 2010, and captured 3A in 2009.
