  • All-state football teams for 2016 season

    The 2016 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

    Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

    CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created entirely from the results of the coaches’ vote.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Three teams take over as new No. 1s

    It’s still early in the 2016-17 boys basketball season, but George Washington has already made some impressive moves. 

    The Patriots come in as the new No. 1 team in the Class 5A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings. In the two weeks since the release of the preseason rankings, they have gone 5-0 which included a three-point win over No. 2 Rock Canyon and a 13-point win over defending state champion Overland.

    With a five-point loss to Rock Canyon, preseason No. 1 Eaglecrest falls to No. 5.

    Grandview jumped two spots to land at No. 7 while Smoky Hill (No. 8) and Chatfield (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 5A poll.

    A 3-0 record over the first week and a half of the season has kept Pueblo West as the No. 1 team in 4A.

    Valor Christian also holds tight at N0. 2, despite a season-opening loss to 5A No. 9 Doherty.

    Vista PEAK has looked good early in the year, starting with a 6-0 run to start the season. The Bison made a five-spot jump to come in at No. 4 this week.

    Lewis-Palmer is the only new team to the 4A rankings, coming in at No. 10.

    Colorado Springs Christian holds its spot as the No. 1 team in 3A. Resurrection Christian jumped five spots to come in at No. 2. Manitou Springs (No. 3) and Alamosa (No. 4) each moved up two spots from the preseason rankings.

    At No. 7 and No. 10 respectively, Frontier Academy and Kent Denver are the two new teams to the 3A rankings.

    Sedgwick County takes over as the No. 1 team in the 2A poll after Sanford’s 74-game winning streak came to an end last week.

    The Indians now sit at No. 6.

    There was a high turnover rate in the 2A rankings as four new teams broke into the poll this week.

    Akron comes in at No. 4, Del Norte lands at No. 5, Dayspring Christian sits at No. 7 and Peyton breaks in at No. 9.

    Starting 5-0 has meant good things for Holly, the No. 1 team in 1A this week.

    The Wildcats snagged six firs-place votes in the process.

    Like the 2A poll, there was significant turnover in 1A this week.

    Weldon Valley (No. 3), Eads (No. 7), Peetz (No. 9) and Sangre de Cristo (No. 10) are all newcomers to the rankings.

    Fleming, who came in as the preseason No. 1 comes in at No. 6 this week.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Boys basketball preview: George Washington seeking first title since Chauncey Billups era

    Chauncey Billups is a legend on Monaco Parkway.

    The greatest player in Colorado high school history led George Washington to a pair of state championships. He was named Mr. Basketball three times and was selected as a McDonald’s All-American his senior year.

    The point guard, who thrived at the University of Colorado and in the NBA, earning Finals MVP honors in 2004 during a championship run with the Detroit Pistons, piloted the Patriots to their last basketball crown. They won 6A over Horizon in 1994.

    Basketball has always meant a great deal to the school. This year’s team has a chance at snapping a 22-year title drought.

    “It would mean a lot, because we haven’t won a state championship since Chauncey,” said Calvin Fugett, the current floor general for the Patriots. “It would put George on the map again.”

    In many ways, George Washington is already on the map again. They are the two-time defending Denver Prep League champions, boasting a 16-0 record in league play over that span. That came after 3-4 and 4-4 city records the previous two seasons.

    “I think the last two seasons were very exciting, because we won the Denver Prep League,” said Jon’il Fugett, Calvin’s brother and capable sidekick. “I remember when Calvin was a freshman and I would go and watch his games. I would see him lose to some of these DPS teams. They got so sad when they lost. They had so much pride. The fact that I haven’t had a loss and haven’t had to feel what they felt is pretty good.”

    The program has also reached the 5A Sweet 16 the past two seasons, their deepest tournament runs since 2011, and been one of the more compelling teams to watch.

    Now they want more. A state championship is in their sights and they are brimming with talent. Hoops are alive and well at the traditional city contender.

    “When I first got here, a lot of students didn’t go to the games but our style of play is exciting,” said fourth-year coach Reggie Hammons, a former Patriots player. “The crowd is involved again. We have a nice little buzz around the school about the team.”

    George Washington, ranked sixth in the preseason CHSAANow 5A poll, might have the fastest group in Colorado. They have the personnel to be in that conversation and love to take advantage, consistently pushing the pace and pressuring opponents with their athleticism.

    “We definitely are an athletic, running team, because we’re really guard-heavy,” Calvin Fugett said. “We’re going to be a team that can shoot better this year. We’ve been working on that. We’re going to be a defensive team as well.”

    “I don’t really see any team that can hang with us man-to-man or can press us full-court,” Jon’il Fugett added. “If that happens, we’re going to take advantage and attack them.”

    Although Daylen Kountz, perhaps Colorado’s best junior prospect, transferred to Denver East, the Patriots still have sufficient star power.

    Jon’il (14.4 points per game, 2.1 steals per game as sophomore) and Calvin Fugett (11.1 ppg, 5.8 assists per game as junior) are dynamos in the open court. And 6-foot-5 guard Jervay Green is uber-talented, a senior that Coach Reggie Hammons describes as one of the best in the state. 6-foot-8 Tre Pierce is mobile, a rim-protector who accounted for 2.5 blocks a night as a sophomore.

    Above all else, the Patriots will no longer be one of the youngest teams in 5A. Upperclassmen lead the charge, a virtue George Washington hopes will push them into the state finals. Their last appearances in the championship game were in 2009, an overtime loss to Regis Jesuit, and 2001, a 40-39 defeat at the hands of Mullen. The program does have five state championships (1994, 1993, 1986, 1982, 1961).

    “To win the state championship, it would be our legacy,” Jon’il Fugett said. “Just like Chauncey has his legacy at George, we would be able to leave our own legacy.”

  • Boys basketball rankings: Four of five defending champions head preseason polls

    For the most part, the defending state champions come into the 2016-17 basketball season as the big dogs in the yard.

    Pueblo West, Colorado Springs Christian, Sanford and Fleming all took the top spot in their respective CHSAANow.com preseason basketball polls.

    The only defending champion to not hold the top spot is Overland, which did not make the top 10 in the Class 5A rankings.

    The top spot in that class goes to Eaglecrest, which finished runner-up last season. Colbey Ross will be back for his senior season and will look to lead the Raptors to another state title.

    Rock Canyon (No. 2), Denver East (No. 3), ThunderRidge (No. 4) all got first-place votes to start the season.

    In 4A, the two teams that ended last season all top will start this season in the same position. Pueblo West holds the top spot in 4A with Valor Christian nipping at the heels of the Cyclones at No. 2.

    Pueblo West came away with a 70-51 win over the Eagles to take the state championship. David Simental returns for his senior season at Pueblo West and is looking to turn heads as he did in last year’s state tournament.

    He’d also like to win a second-straight title for the Cyclones.

    Colorado Springs Christian takes the No. 1 spot in 3A after winning it’s second-straight championship. The Lions lose big man Sam Howard, but guard Justin Engesser does return for his senior year.

    After winning its third-straight title last year, Sanford comes into the season as the No. 1 team in 2A and is just one win away from history. 

    If the Indians win their season opener, they will set the record for most consecutive wins in state history. They currently sit tied with Ridgway, who won 73 straight games from 1993-96.

    After missing out on the 2015 state title by a point, Fleming rebounded to capture last year’s 1A championship and will start the season at No. 1 as a result. 

    The boys basketball regular season begins Nov. 30.

    Monday, Aug. 15

    Women’s Track: 3000-meter Steeplechase final, 8:15 a.m. Emma Coburn, a 2008 graduate of Crested Butte, hits the track for her shot at an Olympic medal.

    Men’s Track: 800-meter final, 4:25 p.m. Widefield graduate Boris Berian is one of two Americans in the final race. He finished second in his heat in the semifinals.

    Tuesday, Aug. 16

    Women’s Basketball: Australia vs. Serbia, 8 a.m. Lewis-Palmer graduate Danielle Page and Serbia play in the quarterfinals.

    Men’s Track: 200-meter prelims, 8:50 a.m. George Washington alum Jeremy Dodson hits the track for the first time.

    Women’s Soccer: Canada vs. Germany, 1 p.m. Valor Christian alum Janine Beckie has emerged as a star for the Canadians, who now get a shot to advance to the final. Canada beat Germany during the group stage.

    Women’s Wrestling: Freestyle 75kg, 7 a.m. The entire bracket will play out on Thursday, with the qualifications beginning early in the morning, and the final in the afternoon, at 3:35 p.m. Bear Creek alum Adeline Gray will participate.

    Women’s Basketball: Semifinals, 12 p.m. Danielle Page and Serbia play Spain in the semifinals on Thursday.

    (4) Cherry Creek 67, (1) ThunderRidge 56

    Cherry Creek boys basketball stunned No. 1 seed ThunderRidge with a 67-56 win in the Class 5A Sweet 16 on Wednesday night. The win secures a spot for the Bruins in Saturday’s Great 8.

    The Bruins, a No. 4 seed, were in control at seemingly every juncture. They jumped out to a 13-4 lead late in the first quarter, and extended that lead to 24-19 at halftime. It was 46-37 after three quarters, and Cherry Creek controlled the fourth quarter for the upset.

    Cherry Creek had a scoring advantage in every quarter en route to the win, which knocked off last year’s 5A runner-up.

    This is the Bruins’ first appearance in the Great 8 since 2012, according to AD Jason Wilkins.

    (1) Chatfield 63, (3) George Washington 59

    Chatfield rallied from a 10-point deficit in the third quarter, and sparked a comeback victory over George Washington.

    The Chargers trailed 46-36 in the third, but an 11-0 run gave Chatfield a 47-46 lead.

    Chatfield had trailed after the first quarter — 17-10 — but a 9-0 run gave the Chargers a 19-17 lead. Still, GW took a 26-25 advantage into halftime.

    The Patriots pushed their lead to that 46-36 margin in the third quarter, before Chatfield’s 11-0 run changed the game.

    It was 58-56 Chatfield with just over 30 seconds to play, and the Chargers were able to hold on from there.

    The upcoming trip to the Great 8 is believed to be the school’s first in 15 years, according to Chatfield.

    (1) Rangeview 57, (5) Arvada West 56

    Kris Hollins made what proved to be the game-winning free-throw with 2.1 seconds left to help Rangeview escape an upset bid.

    As it typically does, Rangeview jumped out on Arvada West early, and led 17-11 after the first quarter. But A-West hung around in this one.

    The Wildcats rallied to take a 27-26 lead at halftime, and stuck close throughout.

    Rangeview did lead 45-39 after three quarters, but Arvada West cut it to a three-point lead with 1:17 to go. With 35 seconds to play, it was a two-point lead.

    The game was tied late when Hollins was fouled following an offensive rebound, according to Brock Laue. He hit one free-throw, and that proved to be the difference.

    (2) Cherokee Trail 56, (3) Legend 52

    In yet another close Sweet 16 contest, the two teams stayed close all night.

    Still, Cherokee Trail held narrow leads after each quarter. It was 17-15 after one, 27-24 at the half, and 46-42 after three.

    According to Ian Silvester, Cherokee Trail’s David Thornton led all scorers with 21 points. Thornton is CT’s leading scorer this season at 19.5 points per game.

    Regis Jesuit had a monster second quarter to build a lead, then held on for the Sweet 16 win.

    The Raiders trailed 10-9 after the first quarter, but used runs of 11-0 and 7-0 to take a commanding 33-19 lead into halftime.

    It was 39-27 going to the fourth, and Dakota Ridge would get within five with three minutes left, but Regis Jesuit was able to put the Eagles away.

    The Raiders had four players hit double figures, led by Elijah Martinez and Michael Wambsganss, who each scored 15. Geoffrey Kelly added 13 points, and Connor Hobbs had 10 for Regis.

    Alijah Halliburton went off for 20 points as the defending champions cruised back into the Great 8.

    Halliburton’s total was just off his season high of 23. Five other players had at least seven points for Overland, including De’Ron Davis (10), Reggie Gibson (nine), Jervae Robison (eight), Nick Holmes (eight) and Padiet Wang (seven).

    Bill Discipio was Boulder’s leading scorer in the loss with 12 points.

    The President’s Day edition of the CHSAANow.com Class 5A boys basketball poll is looking, well, more presidential.

    George Washington, who started the season as a top-five team, has rejoined the 5A rankings at No. 9 thanks to a 104-97 shootout win over Denver East on Saturday.

    Losing five of their first six games of the year saw the Patriots slip out of the polls as they appeared destined for a more mediocre season than most thought.

    Then league play began and things got much better much faster.

    George Washington is undefeated in a tough Denver Prep League which has gotten the attention of the voters.

    Rangeview remains the top team in the 5A poll and ThunderRidge made an impressive jump this week, landing at No. 4. That’s three spots better than last week and a win over No. 3 Regis Jesuit probably had a lot to do with it.

    Lewis-Palmer hangs on to the top spot in the 4A poll this week. The Rangers have rattled off 19 straight wins and with two games remaining have already wrapped up a share of the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference regular season title.

    No new teams broke into the 4A rankings this week.

    DSST-Stapleton remains the No. 1 team in 3A with Faith Christian right on its heels. The Eagles are the only blemish on the Knights’ 18-1 record.

    At No. 10, Grand Valley cracks its way back into the 3A top 10 this week.

    Sanford is still the No. 1 team in the 2A poll, holding off Resurrection Christian and Sedgwick County, the other two undefeated teams in the class.

    Crowley County is the lone newcomer in 2A, coming in at No. 10.

    Defending 1A champion Holly maintains their spot as the No. 1 team this week. Cheyenne Wells is a new face to the 1A poll as they land at No. 10.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.
