  • State track, ever the spectacle, kicked off in a big way Thursday

LAKEWOOD — Schools from all five classifications, everyone from Idalia to Cherry Creek, come together at Jefferson County Stadium each year for the state track and field championships.

The three-day event is a spectacle. From the multi-colored team tents dotting the stands, to the splendid new stadium scoreboard with videos and instant results, to the podium for state placers lined with flowers underneath, the state track meet is one of the premier prep events in Colorado.

Although Thursday was the first of three days, serving as a stage-setter on the track with only two events as championship finals, the 3,200-meter run and the 3,200-meter relay in a few of the divisions, and the rest preliminary rounds to earn spots in finals, the day was not bereft of memorable performances.

Maya Evans, a freshman at Vista PEAK, won prelims in the Class 4A 100-meter dash in 12.00. She also placed third in the 200-meter dash prelims in 25.25. Off the track, Evans won the state championship in the long jump with a 19-9.25, the third-best mark nationally by a freshman in 2015.

“My goal was a 20, but every time I jump I get closer and closer,” Evans said.

“It feels really good,” she added. “I’m new to state and it was a challenge for me, but I believed in myself and I knew I could do it.”

Valor Christian, sporting their white Nike speed suits, blistered a time of 1:26.37 in the boys 800-meter relay. They easily won 4A prelims over Littleton (1:28.81) and Windsor (1:28.85).

A few minutes later, Fountain-Fort Carson — resembling Superman in their red, white, and blue — ran 1:26.99 to win 5A prelims. Pine Creek girls, the defending state champions in the 400- and 800-meter relays, posted 1:38.44 in their preliminary round in 5A, easily outdistancing Cherokee Trail’s 1:41.05. They own the Colorado record of 1:37.05, set in 2014 at the state meet.

The 800-meter relay finals for the big schools could be as entertaining as any event on Friday.

As for those championship finals on Thursday, another team decked in red, white, and blue — Cherry Creek — swept the 5A boys and girls crowns in the 3,200 meter relay. The girls were in a battle with Monarch and ThunderRidge through three legs, but unleashed Jordyn Colter — the No. 1-ranked girl in America in the 800 meters and the mile — on the anchor to cruise a 9:07.54. Monarch (9:15) and ThunderRidge (9:21) finished second and third.

The Bruin boys hovered around fourth place through the first two legs, but picked off the leaders and won in 7:51. Chaparral (7:54), Fountain-Fort Carson (7:55), and Liberty (7:57) all dipped under eight minutes.

In a state with the track and field talent of Colorado, plenty of athletes performed well on the biggest stage. Perhaps none performed better, or at least in more dramatic fashion, than Air Academy’s Katie Rainsberger.

After running away from a stacked 4A field in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:49, ahead of Mountain View’s Riley Cooney (10:56), Denver North’s Kayla Young (10:56), and Canon City’s Aubrey Till (10:58), the junior saved enough for something special in the 3,200 relay.

Thompson Valley, a traditional power in the relay, led through three legs and by a sizeable margin. But Air Academy was lurking in the top five.

The Kadets moved into second with Rainsberger’s anchor leg to go, but the Eagles had Emily Leidig, a state qualifier in the 800-meters, countering. Rainsberger measured Leidig on the first lap and started gaining, but the gap was still several meters.

She eventually caught her with around 200 to go, and brought the baton home in 9:25. Canon City snuck past Thompson Valley for second in 9:31 to TV’s 9:32.

“They stepped up really big today,” Rainsberger, who split 2:10, said of her relay mates. “We were in pretty good position when I got the baton. I knew I just needed to finish as hard as I could and try to get the win.”

Kayla Wiitala, Lilliana Hamilton, and Carly Wilborn were also members of the winning 3,200 relay for Air Academy.

Rainsberger nearly ran down Mountain View on the anchor leg a season ago, but came up just short as the Kadets were the runner-up in 9:17 to the Mountain Lions’ 9:15.

The 4A champion last fall in cross country got her first state of winning on the track after several runner-up finishes individually, as well. She’s the favorite to win the 800 and 1600-meter runs over the weekend.

Events begin again at 8:30 am on Friday morning with the 3A 3,200 meter-run.

Evergreen, which was upset by Valor Christian, dropped to No. 3. Valor is No. 2 this week.

The other three No. 1 teams — ThunderRidge (5A), Colorado Academy (3A) and Front Range Christian (2A) — all remain the same.

In 5A, Cherry Creek joined this week’s ranking. The Bruins came in at No. 9.

There were no newcomers in 4A. The 3A poll added No. 10 Frontier Academy, while 2A added CS School (No. 5).

  • Jeffco League has a stranglehold on 4A baseball

Wheat Ridge senior Colton Dombroski, second from the left, is mobbed by teammates after scoring the game-winning run Saturday afternoon against Ralston Valley. The Farmers took a 5-4 victory for their third straight victory. (Dennis Pleuss)
The 4A Jeffco League, led by teams like Wheat Ridge, is very, very good this season. (Dennis Pleuss)

Life in baseball’s Class 4A Jeffco League is cutthroat. It borders on cannibalism.

Within this ecosystem, 10 teams are battling for three automatic berths into the 4A postseason field. As of Monday, five of them are ranked. That includes three in the top five, and the No. 1 (D’Evelyn) and No. 2 (Evergreen) teams — who meet on Tuesday evening.

And they’re all beating up on one another.

For example: On Monday, No. 6 Wheat Ridge upset No. 1 D’Evelyn. It was the second-consecutive week in which a top-ranked 4A Jeffco team fell to a league foe.

“It’s tough, man,” said longtime D’Evelyn coach Dan Porreco. “I mean everybody is really good. We ran into Wheat Ridge last night, and they did a nice job. They’re good. Every day, you’ve got to be ready and do your best. It’s crazy.”

Added Evergreen coach Steve Jones: “It’s like a heavyweight prize fight each time you take the field.”

Last week, Jeffco had the top three teams in the poll, with Green Mountain, D’Evelyn and Evergreen. But then Valor Christian — another 4A Jeffco team — upset No. 1 Green Mountain.

Shortly, the Eagles, too, found themselves ranked. They are No. 9 this week. Green Mountain is now No. 5.

“It does put a little more emphasis on the games, but it makes the regular season fun,” said Wheat Ridge coach Adam Miller, who is in his 13th season with the Farmers. “I think the kids look to it as a challenge, and if you present it that way to them, every day is a fun day.”

D'Evelyn junior Cameron Brown fires to the plate during the first inning Tuesday afternoon against Holy Family. Brown pitched five inning with a dozen strikeouts. The Jaguars improved to 9-0 on the season with a 5-0 victory. (Dennis Pleuss)
D’Evelyn is currently ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, leading five 4A Jeffco teams in the poll this week. (Dennis Pleuss)

The league placed three teams in the Final 8 last year — but that doesn’t include current league member Valor, which played independent schedule last season and also reached that stage. And Green Mountain won last season’s 4A title, the first for a team in the league since Golden won in 2003.

Is this the start of a shift in power?

“When you’re looking at the Northern League … they’ve produced a few state champions over the last number of years,” said Valor Christian coach Keith Wahl. “At some point in time, when you’re looking at the best league, you’re looking at the best playoff record, you’re looking at the state champions coming out of the league, and (the 4A Jeffco is) right there. But I think for us to be considered (the best), you’ve got to continue to hold up the trophy at the end.”

This season, the strength has been evident. Teams from the 4A Jeffco are a combined 25-4 against other 4A leagues this season. The includes an astonishing 17-0 mark from the current top eight teams in the league standings.

Shoot, the 4A Jeffco is 20-10 against 5A teams to this point.

Consider for a moment just the top five:

    • Wheat Ridge is 11-3, but one loss is to a team from Arizona, and the other two were one-run losses to 5A teams.
    • Evergreen is 12-1, with the lone loss coming to a team from Oregon.
    • D’Evelyn was 13-0 before losing to Wheat Ridge on Monday.
    • Green Mountain? 10-4, with three out-of-state losses, and a fourth to Valor, a league foe.
    • Even Valor’s 7-6 record is deceiving. The Eagles have four out-of-state losses, one loss to a 5A team, and their other loss came to Littleton — which, yes, plays in the 4A Jeffco.

“It prepares our kids for the every day,” said Wahl, now in his seventh year at Valor. “Today we go against Golden, we have to bring our best. Tomorrow we go against Evergreen, we have to bring our best. It helps our guys. And ultimately, it does season you for playoff time.”

“There’s lot of good teams, and I think the better pitching you see, the better it makes you come playoff time,” added Green Mountain coach Brad Madden. “Because you’re not getting any (No. 3 or 4 pitchers) in the playoffs. It’s all 1s and 2s.”

Said Jones, the Evergreen coach: “It’s like the old saying from the Bible: ‘Iron sharpens iron.’ Playing the toughest competition day-in and day-out, it’s just going to make you better.”

But there’s one catch: You’ve got to make the playoffs first.

“It pays off,” Jones said. “It does pay its dividends — if you can survive.”

Because the league only gets three automatic qualifiers, it leaves the other seven fighting for five at-large berths with the rest of the teams in 4A. One of those berths will almost certainly go to Ponderosa, which will automatically qualify if it wins 10 games. The Mustangs already have nine wins.

So, really, the 4A Jeffco teams are fighting for four at-large berths, which are based upon standings in the Wild Card points. That’s tough.

“If we don’t keep winning, we could be on the outside looking in. If Golden doesn’t keep winning, they could be on the outside looking in,” Wahl said. “I mean, it’s a tough deal to stare down the barrel of that gun.”

If the season were to end today, the league would get five teams in the postseason, including two at-large berths. One of those berths would go to Littleton, meaning Valor Christian — currently the ninth-best team in 4A, according to voters — would stay home.

The Eagles have some ground to make up in terms of Wild Card points. They are currently six spots outside of an at-large berth, so their focus right now is on securing an automatic spot.

“This group this year is young for us, they’re inexperienced, but what they’re getting an opportunity to experience is every game matters,” Wahl said. “I don’t think they’ve ever had that before.”

And in the 4A Jeffco this season, that feeling is only magnified.

“There’s no breathers, especially when we get backed up (by weather) like this,” Madden said. “There’s no chance to go get a JV guy some work on the mound. You’ve got to go with your guys the whole way through.”

Added Jones: “There are any number of teams in the Jeffco 4A league that are worthy to be in the playoffs, and some of them aren’t going to make it. It’s a tough thing to embrace. But, of course, that’s the system and we’re going to live under it and do our best to qualify.”

Porreco, now in his 20th year at D’Evelyn, said this is as good as he’s ever seen the league.

“I mean there’s been some great teams in the past — you know Golden when they won the state tournament (in 2003); Wheat Ridge when they dropped down (from 5A), they’ve been good every year, and Evergreen’s always really good,” the coach said. “This is, I would say, might be the best the league’s been in a long time.”

“I don’t think there’s an easy team in our league,” added Miller, the Wheat Ridge coach. “You’ve got to rev it up pretty much every day.”

  • Columbine back in 5A girls soccer poll

Columbine junior Tatum Barton (10) fires a shot on goal as Ralston Valley seniors Leesa Rockhold (15) and Kasee Horton (16) chase after the Rebels' leading scorer in the second half Tuesday at Lakewood Memorial Field. Barton scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 75th minute to give the Rebels a 2-1 victory. (Dennis Pleuss)

Columbine, last year’s Class 5A champion, returned to the girls soccer rankings this week.

The Rebels (7-2-0) are No. 8 in CHSAANow.com’s 5A poll, and actually just won a title game rematch with Ralston Valley last week.

There was a lot of shakeup to the 5A rankings, including Mountain Vista’s rise to No. 2 after beating last week’s No. 2 Rock Canyon.

Grandview also made a big jump in going from No. 8 to No. 4.

Other newcomers this week include No. 9 Cheyenne Mountain and No. 10 Littleton in 4A; and No. 9 Middle Park in 3A.

A week after three new No. 1 teams dotted the rankings, all four top teams held firm in their respective classifications. Those are ThunderRidge (5A), Evergreen (4A), Colorado Academy (3A) and Front Range Christian (2A).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

  • Littleton’s Stringy Ervin named national girls swim coach of the year

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Twenty-one high school coaches from across the country have been selected as 2014 National Coaches of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association.

Included is Littleton’s Maurice “Stringy” Ervin, who was named 2014 NFHS national girls swimming and diving coach of the year.

The NFHS, which has been recognizing coaches through an awards program since 1982, honors coaches in the top 10 girls sports and top 10 boys sports (by participation numbers), and in one “other” sport that is not included in the top 10 listings. The NFHS also recognizes a Spirit coach as a separate award category. Winners of NFHS awards must be active coaches during the year for which they receive their award. This year’s awards recognize coaches for the 2013-14 school year.

Recipients of the 2014 NFHS national awards for girls sports are:

Carmen Jackson, track and field, Miami (Florida) Northwestern Senior High School; Curt DeHaan, basketball, Lynden (Washington) Christian Schools; Laurie Glass, volleyball, Leland (Michigan) Public Schools; Brian Song, soccer, Clarksville (Maryland) River Hill High School;  John Biedenbach, softball, Trenton (Michigan) High School; Johnette Goldman, cross country, Heber Springs (Arkansas) High School; Coleen Davis, tennis, Portland (Oregon) Episcopal School;  Maurice “Stringy” Ervin, swimming and diving, Littleton (Colorado) High School; and Leslie Bender, golf, Louisville (Kentucky) Sacred Heart Academy.  There was no national coach selected for girls lacrosse.

Recipients of this year’s national awards for boys sports are:

Dale Mueller, football, Ft. Thomas  (Kentucky) Highlands High School; John Lober, track and field, Traverse City (Michigan) Central High School; Pat Rady, basketball, Cloverdale (Indiana) High School; Rick Carpenter, baseball, Prosper (Texas) High School; Lee Mitchell, soccer, Sandy (Utah) Alta High School; Russ Cozart, wrestling, Brandon (Florida) High School; Frank Trammel, cross country, Benton (Louisiana) High School; Micheal Goll, tennis, Salina (Kansas) Central High School; Roger Lauzon, golf, Lynnfield (Massachusetts) High School; and Claude Valle, swimming and diving, Weston (Massachusetts) High School.

The recipient of the National Coach of the Year Award for spirit is Tina Fortner of Minonk (Illinois) Fieldcrest High School, and Joan Ganim of Broadview Heights (Ohio) Brecksville High School was chosen in the other sports category for girls gymnastics.

In addition to the 21 National Coaches of the Year, the NFHS Coaches Association has selected James N. Feldkamp of Troy, Michigan, as the recipient of the National Coach Contributor Award. This award is presented to an individual who has gone above and beyond and who exemplifies the highest standards of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and moral character, and who carries the endorsement of his or her respective state high school association.

The NFHS has a contact person in each state who is responsible for selecting deserving coach award recipients. This contact person often works with the state coaches’ association in his or her respective state. He or she contacts the potential state award recipients to complete a coach profile form that requests information regarding the coach’s record, membership in and affiliation with coaching and other professional organizations, involvement with other school and community activities and programs, and coaching philosophy. To be approved as an award recipient and considered for sectional and national coach of the year consideration, this profile form must be completed by the coach or designee and then approved by the executive director (or designee) of the state athletic/activities association.

The next award level after state coach of the year is sectional coach of the year. The NFHS is divided into eight geographical sections. They are as follows: Section 1 – Northeast (CT, ME, MA, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VT); Section 2 – Mideast (DE, DC, KY, MD, OH, PA, VA, WV); Section 3 – South (AL, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN); Section 4 – Central (IL, IN, IA, MI, WI); Section 5 – Midwest (KS, MN, MO, NE, ND, SD); Section 6 – Southwest (AR, CO, NM, OK, TX); Section 7 – West (AZ, CA, HI, NV, UT); and Section 8 – Northwest (AK, ID, MT, OR, WA, WY).

The NFHS Coaches Association has an advisory committee, composed of a chair and eight sectional representatives.  The sectional committee representatives evaluate the state award recipients from the states in their respective sections and select the best candidates for the sectional award in each sport category. The NFHS Coaches Association Advisory Committee then considers the sectional candidates in each sport, ranks them according to a point system, and determines a national winner for each of the 20 sport categories, the spirit category and one “other” category.

A total of 533 coaches will be recognized this year with state, sectional and national awards.
