  • Football roundup: La Junta beats The Classical Academy on a Hail Mary

    It was a top-2 game, and it was a wild one.

    La Junta, newly-minted as the No. 1 team in Class 2A, beat No. 2 The Classical Academy 26-21 on a Hail Mary to end the game.

    La Junta grabbed a 6-0 lead with 5 minutes left in the first quarter, and things that way until midway through the third quarter.

    TCA went up 7-6 with 6:36 remaining in the third, and expanded the lead to 14-6 early in the fourth quarter after recovering a bad snap on a punt.

    That’s when things got wild.

    La Junta made it 14-12 in with six minutes to play, but had a two-point conversion called back because of a penalty. The Tigers took an 18-14 lead with 1:20 play, and that lead turned out to be brief. That’s because TCA drove down the field to go up 21-18 with 37 seconds to play.

    All of this, of course, just served to set the stage for La Junta’s game-winning Hail Mary.

    This was the Tigers’ second huge win in a week. La Junta beat then-No. 1 Kent Denver last week in another top-2 showdown.

    3A: (10) Longmont 46, (7) Holy Family 35

    Longmont scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to put this back-and-forth game away.

    The team teams were tied at 8 after the opening frame, and Longmont held just a 23-21 lead at halftime. After a Trojans’ field goal, Holy Family went up on a passing score from Stone Samaras to Kyle Helbig.

    The Tigers pushed it to 35-26 on the first play of the fourth quarter, but that’s when Longmont turned it on and scored the game’s final 20 points.

    “We knew that if it came down to the fourth quarter, we were going to do the right things this time that we needed to do to get the win,” Longmont linebacker Austin Hassler told BoCoPreps.com after the win.

    3A: Skyview 11, Lincoln 5 (OT)

    This was a weird one.

    Skyview grabbed an early 2-0 lead on a first-half safety. Lincoln then went up 3-2 on a field goal with 5:23 remaining in the third quarter.

    The Lancers expanded that lead to 5-2 with a safety of their own with 1:57 remaining in the third, only to see Skyview tie it on this field goal with 44 seconds left:

    3A: Skyline 28, Niwot 0

    Skyline is now 5-0, and off to its best start in more than a decade after a 28-0 win over Niwot.

    The Falcons were already receiving votes in this week’s 4A rankings, and could slide into the poll on Monday.

    It’s quite the turnaround for the program: Skyline has won five games in a season just once since 2014.

    “We’ve got great kids, and they’re coachable, and they buy into the mentality and the scheme and the system, and once you get buy-in, good things happen,” Skyline coach Michael Silva told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “That’s what they’ve done and they’ve showed that they have the mentality, regardless of the situation, that they’re going to find a way to win. That’s tough to do, because of our history.

    “These guys have managed to find a way, and trust in me and my staff, and it’s been a fun ride so far. And we don’t want it to stop.”

    Notables

    • Sand Creek broke a 20-game losing streak with a 14-8 win over Air Academy. That had been the longest drought in the state. It was the Scorpions’ first win since Sept. 19, 2014, which also came over Air Academy. That was a wild 68-62 win which set all kinds of records.
    • On the other side of the coin, 2A No. 8 Weld Central has now won 10 consecutive games, the longest such streak in the state. The Rebels, now 5-0 this season, beat Valley 28-21.
    • An update on the all-time wins list: Kent Denver beat Elizabeth 39-20 in an afternoon game. That gave coach Scott Yates his 308th career win. West Grand and coach Chris Brown beat Hayden 53-18. That’s Brown’s 310th career win.
    • Berthoud connected on a Hail Mary at halftime of its game with Thompson Valley. But TV won, 28-13, to notch its first win this season (1-4).
    • There was also a first-half Hail Mary in Rangeview/Gateway. Rangeview’s Jaelin Odegard hit Josh Hollins from near midfield (video here). Rangeview went on to win 52-7.
    • Pueblo East beat Pueblo South in the Cannon Game, 21-14. Check out this cool timelapse from the Pueblo Chieftain’s Nick Jurney.
    • Dayspring Christian had another wild game. This time, 8-man’s No. 2 team beat No. 8 Haxtun 55-53.
    • A big game in 8-man: No. 3 Sedgwick County took care of No. 4 Akron 46-8.
    • In 6-man, No. 3 Stratton/Liberty beat No. 5 Arickaree/Woodlin 54-28.
    • Another top-10 6-man game: No. 8 Cotopaxi upset No. 6 La Veta.
    • Eaglecrest is now 5-0 after a 42-20 win over Bear Creek. The Raptors, No. 4 in 5A, are off to their best start in more than a decade.
    • Fairview, ranked No. 7 in 5A, is also 5-0 after beating Arapahoe 48-7.
    • In 1A, No. 2 Paonia beat No. 7 Cedaredge 35-21.
    • Florence upset 2A No. 10 Salida 22-13. That is actually the lone upset of an unranked team over a ranked team so far in Week 5. Ranked teams are a combined 34-1 against unranked opponents through Friday’s games this week.

  • Volleyball rankings: Mead, Eagle Valley join 4A poll

    For the first time all season, all five top teams held their spots in the CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings.

    Rock Canyon, Lewis-Palmer, Eaton, Paonia and Felming all come in at No. 1 in their respective classes.

    There was an air of consistency in the Class 5A rankings as the top three teams all went unchanged from last week. Arapahoe jumped two spots to come in at No. 4.

    There were no new teams in 5A this week.

    The Rangers hold firm at No. 1 in 4A with rival Cheyenne Mountain climbing one spot to land at No. 2.

    Niwot and Silver Creek each jumped four spots to come in at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.

    Mead (No. 7) and Eagle Valley (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 4A poll.

    Eaton still sits at No. 1 in the 3A rankings.

    Middle Park made the biggest jump of the week, gaining three spots to land at No. 6.

    Salida is the only new team in the 3A poll as the Spartans come in at No. 9.

    Paonia (No. 1) and Dayspring Christian (No. 2) hold on to their spots from last week with nine of 10 first-place votes going to those two teams.

    Hoehne makes a two-spot jump to come in at No. 3.

    Simla (No. 6) and Denver Christian (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 2A rankings this week.

    Fleming improved to 10-1 with a 3-0 win over Prairie last week and as a result, hang on to the No. 1 spot in 1A.

    Undefeated Flagler made a four-spot jump to come in at No. 3 and took three first-place votes in the process.

    There were no new teams in the 1A rankings this week.

  • Boys soccer rankings: Fairview, Cheyenne Mountain take over top spots

    Fairview (Class 5A) and Cheyenne Mountain (4A) have taken over the No. 1 boys soccer ranking in their respective classifications this week.

    Fairview, 2-0-0 so far this season, garnered nine of the 10 first-place votes to lead CHSAANow.com’s 5A poll. Boulder, the Knights’ rival, also moved up and now sits at No. 2.

    Broomfield, the preseason No. 1, is No. 3 this week. Cherry Creek is No. 4, and newcomer Rock Canyon rounds out the top five.

    Cheyenne Mountain now leads the 4A ranking after getting six of the 10 first-place votes.

    Former No. 1 Evergreen is second, Air Academy is third, The Classical Academy sits fourth, and Ponderosa moved up from No. 7 to No. 5.

    The 4A ranking added No. 6 Mullen, No. 7 Centaurus, No. 8 Niwot and No. 10 Lewis-Palmer.

  • Boys soccer rankings: All three defending champs lead preseason polls

    All three defending boys soccer champions have been declared favorites according the CHSAANow.com boys soccer polls.

    Broomfield, Evergreen and Kent Denver all took the No. 1 spots in their respective classes as each team will look to repeat their title runs from a year ago.

    In the Class 5A rankings, the Eagles edged out Mountain Vista, the team that they needed overtime to beat in the state championship game last fall.

    The Golden Eagles took three first place votes and hold the No. 2 spot heading into the regular season.

    Fairview, Arapahoe and Boulder round out the top five teams in the initial set of rankings. All three of those teams advanced to at least the state quarterfinals in 2015.

    Heritage, which was a semifinal team last year, comes in at No. 7.

    In the 4A rankings, state runner-up TCA lands at the No. 2 spot behind the Cougars.

    Cheyenne Mountain takes the No. 3 spot while Standley Lake takes No. 5. Both teams advanced to the semifinals last year and are looking at staying just as competitive in 2016.

    Air Academy, which won the 4A title in 2014, lands at No. 4.

    All totaled, each team that advanced to last year’s quarterfinals will be ranked to start the season.

    With Kent Denver taking the top spot in the 3A poll, it’s Vail Mountain that comes in at No. 2.

    The Gore Rangers lost to Kent Denver in the semifinals before the Sun Devils went on to beat Fountain Valley in the 3A title game.

    The Danes will start the season at No. 3.

    KIPP and Faith Christian will make up the rest of 3A’s top five teams. KIPP advanced to the state quarterfinals and the Eagles lost to Peak to Peak in the second round of the tournament.

    After advancing to the semifinals last year, Coal Ridge will start the season ranked at No. 6.

    AURORA — Valor Christian’s athletic department had a banner season in 2015-16, leading the state with seven team championships.

    In terms of individual sports, Cheyenne Mountain led the way with 11 individual champions.

    Team Championships

    Valor Christian had the most team championships this season with seven. The Eagles won boys golf, softball, football, girls basketball, girls swimming, boys lacrosse and baseball.

    The seven titles are the most since Regis Jesuit and Cheyenne Mountain each won seven in 2010-11.

    Five teams tied for second place in the state with three team championships this season: Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Academy, Kent Denver, Pomona and Regis Jesuit.

    Colorado Academy and Valor Christian each had a state-best three girls championships, while Valor’s four titles were the most on the boys’ side.

    In all, 67 different teams won a team championship in 2015-16, including 16 teams which won multiple championships.

    Individual Championships

    Cheyenne Mountain also had an outstanding year in terms of individual titles, leading the state with 11 championships. The program was well balanced: Six championships came from its girls teams, and five came from the boys.

    Lutheran’s 10 individual championships were the second-most in the state, including a state-best nine boys titles. Regis Jesuit was third with nine individual titles, and Air Academy and Pomona tied for fourth with eight apiece.

    A total of 135 schools had at least one individual champion, and 82 had multiple champions. Of those, 21 schools had at least five individual champions.

  • Grandview’s Brie Oakley kicks off 2016 state track meet in record-breaking fashion

    LAKEWOOD — Welcome to an elite club, Brie Oakley.

    At Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood during the first day of the track and field state championships, the Grandview newcomer shattered a 26-year-old Class 5A state meet record in the 3,200-meter run.

    After finishing as the state runner-up to Lauren Gregory of Fort Collins during her first-ever cross country season last fall, Oakley’s torrid early pace — 2:30 through 800 meters, 5:09 through 1,600 — dropped the field and rewrote a long-standing record held by legendary Boulder High runner Melody Fairchild. Her time of 10:33.16 seconds clipped Fairchild’s 10:34.09 from 1990. She also easily outdistanced second-place finisher Megan Mooney of Horizon (11:09.34), a Florida State recruit.

    “It was just so surreal with this being my first track season,” Oakley said. “I just wanted to go out fast and not look back.”

    From a newcomer to a champion and record holder in the state’s highest classification, Oakley also ran the anchor leg of a 3,200 relay that placed fifth in 9:32.21. She is the No. 12 seed for the 800 on Friday and the No. 1 seed with a time of 4:57.91 in the 1,600 on Saturday.

    “I originally played soccer, but got kind of burned out,” she said. “One of my friends was on the cross country team and she always talked about it. I had run some 5k’s before, so I figured I would try it out. I just fell in love with running.”

    With only 3,200 relays and 5A 3,200s as finals on the track during Thursday’s morning session for the bigger schools, distance runners took center stage.

    Poudre senior Henry Raymond, appearing in his first-ever individual events at state after coming off an injury-riddled junior track season, entered the weekend in an unfamiliar position. As the No. 1 seed in all three distance disciplines — the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 — he is a potential rare threat to sweep the trio.

    In the 3,200, Raymond conserved energy for his later events during a tactical early pace. Then, after breaking away with Regis Jesuit’s Jack Davidson and Mountain Vista’s Paxton Smith, he scorched a 58-second last quarter to win with a time of 9:25.21. Davidson was second in 9:27.51, while Smith was third in 9:30.50.

    During the weekend’s first foursome finals, Cherry Creek (9:23.64) successfully defended their 5A girls 3,200 relay crown. Lisa Swartz, Jordan McCurdy, Jamie Johnson and Devon Peterson kept Fairview (9:25) and Rocky Mountain (9:29) at bay.

    In the 5A boys 3,200 relay, Monarch’s Ben Hogan, William Dixon, Zach Litoff and Isaac Green pulled away with a winning time of 7:51.57, as Green pushed the Coyotes from a close third, behind Boulder and Mountain Vista, to a win on the anchor leg. The Panthers (7:53.97) and Golden Eagles (7:57.50) both broke eight minutes as well.

    The Air Academy girls had a wire-to-wire victory in the 4A 3,200 relay, with super talent Katie Rainsberger on the fourth leg, during an 18-second win over Niwot in 9:14.28. The Kadets had Kayla Wiitala, Lilliana Hamilton and Maria Mettler as the other baton-carriers.

    David Moenning, in a style reminiscent to Green’s, went from third to first while slipping past Mountain View and Palmer Ridge with a winning 7:53.60 to the Bears’ 7:54.37. Palmer Ridge, after their third consecutive team title, was the defending champion in the event.

    In 5A field event action, Jacob Condill of Chaparral (157-3) and Gina Coleman of Fountain-Fort Carson (145-9) were the winners of the discus throw, while Regis Jesuit’s Austin Campbell (6-9) claimed the 5A high jump.

    Cherry Creek senior Connor Roberts (15-10) held off Monarch freshman phenom Max Manson (15-7) in the pole vault, while Fossil Ridge senior Chloe West was the girls champion with a mark of 12 feet, 2 inches. Audra Koopman of Fort Collins (19-5) won the girls long jump.

    In other notable 4A action from Friday, Anthony Peters of Vista Ridge beat a field of three 46-plus triple jumpers with a mark of 46 feet, 11.5 inches. Depree Kimber of Pueblo South (46-7) and Breon Michel of Vista Ridge (46-3) finished in second and third, respectively.

    Silver Creek sophomore Rylee Anderson, after winning the high jump at 5 feet, 5 inches a season ago, raised her level to 5 feet, 7 inches and another championship.

    The state track and field championships resume on Friday at 8:20 am with the 2A 3,200-meter finals for boys and girls.

    Lutheran’s Kharon Hall making his own name

    Kharon Hall wanted to see his name etched into the record books. After all, his sister was already firmly in there and he figured she could use a little company.

    Dior Hall, the Colorado record holder in the 100 hurdles at George Washington in 2014 with a time of 13.09, not to mention a star at the University of Southern California, has a brother who is making a name all his own.

    A defending state champion in the triple jump, Hall had gone 45 feet, 3.5 inches in 2015 to win Class 3A. But the Lutheran senior wanted more.

    “Ever since I was a little kid my sister has been the star,” he said. “Everybody would know who she was and they would know me as, ‘Dior’s little brother.’ Now that I’m at this platform and setting records, everybody knows me as myself.”

    After a winning mark and new personal best of 46-2.25 at the St. Vrain Invite last week, Hall leapt a monstrous 48 feet, 1.75 inches on Thursday, passing the previous 3A record of 47 feet, 5 inches by Marcus Brown of La Junta in 1999.

    “I would like to give all glory to God, my family and my coaches,” he said. “They’ve pushed me and kept me motivated. I trusted in my training.”

    For a Lutheran program in search of their third boys team title in a row (3A in 2015, 2A in 2014), the Lions had a promising opening day for the boys and the girls. Adam Dawson, a junior, claimed the discus crown with a toss of 173 feet, 1 inch. Fellow junior Morgan Barone won the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 5 inches. The Lions also had their usual dominating sprint crew in qualifying heaps of athletes into Friday and Saturday’s finals on the track.

    Among other champions during the small-school portion of Thursday, John Mall senior Garrett Quintana (54-2) won the 2A shot put, Paonia senior Ashley Van Vleet (5-4) won the 2A high jump, and Sterling junior Victor Zimmerman (14-6) won the 3A pole vault.

    The 1A girls discus state record of 117-00 was smashed by three competitors — Sangre de Cristo’s Jenna McKinley (131-6) and the Eads tandem of Brooke Lenox (124-6) and Mariah Smith (118-8). Flagler junior Cameron Klann set a new 1A record in the long jump by leaping 21-11.75, inching past Stratton’s Kyle English (21-10.5, 2014).

    Rachel (12:16) and Rebekah Rairdon (12:24), senior sisters for Heritage Christian, won gold and silver in the 1A 3,200. Fellow senior and teammate Luke Gilliland won the boys 3,200 in 10:30.

    Estes Park junior Lily Tomasula-Martin pulled away from Peak to Peak freshman Anna Shults to win the 3A 3,200 11:16-11:25. She defended her 2015 title. Skyview Academy senior Ben Butler went back-to-back in the 3,200 as well with a winning time of 9:22.27 to 9:30.60 by Taylor Stack of Salida.

  • District baseball brackets released for first time under RPI system

    Back in January, the Legislative Council approved the recommendation of the CHSAA baseball committee to fast track the use of RPI as the system to determine the playoff fields.

    Wednesday saw the results of that vote for the first time as district brackets for Class 3A through 5A were released. Unlike the Wild Card system used previously, the RPI format takes into account the overall strength of schedule for each team and combines it with their win/loss record to create the field of 32 teams.

    Pine Creek came away with the top overall seed in 5A, and will host this weekend. Other host schools are Regis Jesuit, Lakewood, Heritage, Rock Canyon, Grandview, ThunderRidge and Mullen.

    Rock Canyon, which won last year’s 5A championship, is the No. 5 overall seed and will play Bear Creek in their first game. If they advance they’ll see the winner of Dakota Ridge and Chaparral.

    Three of the final four teams left in last year’s playoff field made it back to the tournament with Grandview landing at No. 6, Chatfield at No. 26. District play will begin this weekend with the state tournament starting next week.

    Mountain View leads the way in 4A, taking the top overall spot in the class. They’ll host their district where they will play Roosevelt. The winner of that game will meet the winner of Palisade and The Classical Academy.

    The other host schools in 4A are Canon City, Valor Christian, Windsor, Pueblo West, Fort Morgan, Denver North and Delta.

    Two-time defending state champion Green Mountain did not make it inside the top 32 teams and did not qualify for district play.

    Last year’s runner-up, Lewis-Palmer, drew the No. 26 seed and will head to District 6 and play host Fort Morgan. The potential of a showdown with league rival Palmer Ridge is there as the Bears play Longmont in that same district. Lewis-Palmer swept the season series against the Bears this year.

    Of last years final four teams in the tournament, only Lewis-Palmer and Ponderosa (No. 29) qualified for districts this year.

    Defending 3A champion Eaton held strong as the No. 1 team in that class all season and is the No. 1 seed coming into districts. The Reds will face Olathe in their first district game with the winner of that game playing the winner of No. 16 Lutheran and No. 17 The Academy.

    University, St, Mary’s, Lamar, Faith Christian, La Junta, Valley and Kent Denver are the other host teams in 3A.

    All four of last year’s final four teams in the tournament qualified for districts this year. Eaton and University are the top two teams in the brackets, Brush comes in at No. 9 and will play No. 24 Buena Vista in District 2 at Kent Denver and Sterling lands at No. 21 and will play No. 12 Colorado Academy in District 4 at Faith Christian.

  • Girls soccer rankings: New No. 1 teams in 3A, 4A

    An overtime win over Colorado Academy was good enough to make Kent Denver the new No. 1 team in the Class 3A CHSAANow.com girls soccer rankings.

    The Sun Devils dropped a game over the weekend to Smoky Hill, but in the voters’ eyes they look to be the top team after taking down the Mustangs in a head-to-head showdown.

    Fountain Valley and Sterling are starting to make some noise amongst the ranks and as a result, broke into the top 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 respectively.

    There was also a new No. 1 team atop the 4A rankings as Lewis-Palmer assumes the top spot, edging out league foe Cheyenne Mountain.

    Ironically, it was the Indians who helped the Rangers claim that spot as they won a 4-3 thriller over former No. 1 Valor Christian on Saturday night.

    Cheyenne Mountain and Lewis-Palmer will square off Wednesday night at Don Breese Stadium.

    The only newcomer in this week’s 4A poll was Littleton at No. 10.

    Grandview still has a firm hold on the top spot in the 5A rankings, easily fending off No. 2 Mountain Vista.

    Rock Canyon made a sizable jump this week, landing at No. 5 which is up five spots from their No. 10 ranking a week ago.

    The 5A poll welcomes two new teams this week as Rocky Mountain comes in at No. 8 and ThunderRidge rounding out the poll at No. 10.

    Vail Mountain is still the No. 1 team in 2A as the entire poll itself went unchanged from a week ago.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.
