  • Girls basketball rankings: Sterling moves up to No. 1 in 3A

    Sterling is the new top dog in the Class 3A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings.

    The Tigers are 6-0 on the young season which includes two wins at the Buena Vista Tournament this past weekend.

    It’s a one-spot jump for Sterling who benefit from two early-season losses by No. 8 Manitou Springs.

    St. Mary’s takes over the No. 2 spot in 3A and Lamar leaps ahead six spots from the preseason rankings, coming in at No. 3.

    At. No. 7, Colorado Springs Christian is the only new team to the 3A poll.

    In 5A, Grandview holds on to the No. 1 spot. Ralston Valley and Highlands Ranch also held firm at their No. 2 and No. 3 spots respectively.

    Horizon (No. 4) and Arapahoe (No. 7) each jumped two spots from the previous rankings.

    Despite a 2-1 record, Valor Christian is still the No. 1 team in 4A. Evergreen jumps up to No. 2 and Pueblo South comes in at No. 3, each team two spots better than the preseason poll.

    Air Academy is the only new team in the 4A poll, rounding it out at No. 10.

    Paonia holds firm at the No. 1 spot in 2A, but Wray is the new No. 2 team, jumping two spots to get there.

    Del Norte made an impressive four-spot leap to land at No. 4 this week.

    At No. 9, West Grand is the only new team in the 2A rankings.

    Kit Carson is still the No. 1 team in 1A with Fleming still holding the No. 2 spot.

    Antonio is new at No. 3, jumping five spots from the preseason poll. Kim/Branson also greatly improved its ranking, coming in at No. 4 which is six spots better than where they came in previously.

    Cheraw (No. 7) and Wiley (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 1A rankings.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Rock Canyon storms back to win 5A cheer championship at state spirit

    DENVER — Going into Saturday night’s final round of the State Spirit Championships, four points and two teams stood between the Class 5A cheer squads from four-place Rock Canyon and first-place Grandview.

    And, at the end of the night, a fully executed routine by Rock Canyon sealed the 5A state title for its third time in the last four years.

    “Having their hard work pay off is a phenomenal feeling and I’m unbelievably proud of them,” said Rock Canyon coach Amanda Mundaca.

    By hitting a clean, solid routine, the Jaguars overcame an overwhelming four point deficit, performing skills such as switch-up pull throughs, one-and-a-half ups, inverted twisting variations, high-to-high full arounds, and impressive squad tumbling.

    There is an clearly an incredible amount of difficulty within the routine, which was a major contribution to the errors made during prelims on Day 1.

    All coaches deal with the deduction sheet differently, but Mundaca made the executive decision to keep everything the same heading into Day 2 and with lots of encouragement, teamwork, and motivation. The Jaguars were able to come together as one and perform a routine that will forever be remembered.

    “It was just amazing to put something on the mat that we could be proud of,” said senior captain Schyler Geck.

    The Jaguars finished with a score of 92.4. Eaglecrest (88.9) finished second, while Grandview (86.3) was third. Chaparral (85.8) was fourth.

    Alongside Mundaca, stood Geck and the three other seniors on the team when Rock Canyon won its first State Championship back in 2012. With the Jaguar’s most recent accomplishment, these upcoming graduates can add another ring to their collection.

    “I couldn’t be prouder to end their senior year with another state championship so it’s an awesome send off for them,” said Mundaca.

    Even though the Jaguars will lose their four seniors next year, a great amount of returning talent will remain on the team and Mundaca hopes to continue this win streak next year by “coming out and hitting another clean routine.”

    Coming off of last year’s streak-breaking sixth place finish, the Jaguars stayed determined and motivated throughout their entire season. On top of the traditional gameday situations, Mundaca consistently held five practices per week in order to properly prepare the team for State.

    Throughout the season, the Jaguars have developed a growing passion for the team and its routine. The results made everything pay off for all of the time and energy that each individual athlete has put into it.

    “I’m glad we could end with a bang and leave it all on the mat and I’m also happy that I could leave the team knowing that I did everything I could for them,” said Geck.

    • Five teams successfully defended championships from a season ago: Vail Christian (2A pom), St. Mary’s (2A/3A co-ed), Castle View (4A/5A co-ed), Cherry Creek (5A pom), and Monarch (hip-hop). Vail Christian’s title was an astonishing sixth-straight, while Castle View has now won three-straight championships.
    • Strasburg rebounded from losing a teammate to a serious injury in warmups to finish second in 2A/3A co-ed.
    • Highland ended Cheyenne Wells’ run of three-straight titles by winning 2A cheer. Cheyenne Wells finished third, while Swink was runner-up.
    • Coal Ridge (cheer) and University (pom) took home championships in 3A.
    • Valor Christian (cheer) and Wheat Ridge (pom) were crowned in 4A.
    • Ponderosa won the Jazz championship, edging out defending champion Mountain Vista.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Four of five defending champions head preseason polls

    For the most part, the defending state champions come into the 2016-17 basketball season as the big dogs in the yard.

    Pueblo West, Colorado Springs Christian, Sanford and Fleming all took the top spot in their respective CHSAANow.com preseason basketball polls.

    The only defending champion to not hold the top spot is Overland, which did not make the top 10 in the Class 5A rankings.

    The top spot in that class goes to Eaglecrest, which finished runner-up last season. Colbey Ross will be back for his senior season and will look to lead the Raptors to another state title.

    Rock Canyon (No. 2), Denver East (No. 3), ThunderRidge (No. 4) all got first-place votes to start the season.

    In 4A, the two teams that ended last season all top will start this season in the same position. Pueblo West holds the top spot in 4A with Valor Christian nipping at the heels of the Cyclones at No. 2.

    Pueblo West came away with a 70-51 win over the Eagles to take the state championship. David Simental returns for his senior season at Pueblo West and is looking to turn heads as he did in last year’s state tournament.

    He’d also like to win a second-straight title for the Cyclones.

    Colorado Springs Christian takes the No. 1 spot in 3A after winning it’s second-straight championship. The Lions lose big man Sam Howard, but guard Justin Engesser does return for his senior year.

    After winning its third-straight title last year, Sanford comes into the season as the No. 1 team in 2A and is just one win away from history. 

    If the Indians win their season opener, they will set the record for most consecutive wins in state history. They currently sit tied with Ridgway, who won 73 straight games from 1993-96.

    After missing out on the 2015 state title by a point, Fleming rebounded to capture last year’s 1A championship and will start the season at No. 1 as a result. 

    The boys basketball regular season begins Nov. 30.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Grandview, Valor Christian among preseason favorites

    It appears that defending girls basketball state champions are going to have their work cut out for them in 2016-17.

    Only Valor Christian comes in as a No. 1 team in the CHSAANow.com preseason girls basketball rankings as a team who also finished the season hoisting a state championship trophy.

    The Eagles won their second-straight Class 4A title last year, beating league rival Evergreen 55-40.

    The Cougars will start the season at No. 4.

    Led by Michaela Onyenwere, Grandview comes in as the top team in 5A. The Wolves advanced to the Final 4 last season, but lost a heartbreaker to eventual state champion ThunderRidge.

    The Grizzlies did not break into the top 10 to start the season.

    In 3A, it’s the 2016 state runner-up Manitou Springs who comes in as the No.1 team to start the year.

    The Mustangs return senior Shelby Megyeri, who is regarded as one of the top guards in the state.

    Defending 3A champion, Lutheran lands at No. 4 in the 3A poll.

    Like the 3A poll, it’s the runner-up that will start the season at No. 1 in 2A. After falling to Yuma 55-46 in the 2A title game, Paonia will start the 2016-17 season as the top team in the class.

    Yuma isn’t far behind though as the defending champ sit at No. 2.

    A stunning upset in the first round of the 1A state tournament ended Kit Carson’s bid at a state title, but the Wildcats find themselves as the team to beat to start this season.

    They take the No. 1 spot in the preseason 1A rankings.

    Idalia comes into the season at No. 4 after claiming last year’s 1A title.

    The girls basketball regular season will begin Nov. 30.

  • Volleyball rankings: New faces lead three polls

    A trio of new teams are taking over No. 1 spots in the CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings this week.

    With plenty of changeover in the Class 2A poll, Paonia comes in as the new top team. The Eagles have not dropped a set yet and cruised to a 2-0 start.

    Dayspring Christian jumped three spots to No. 5, but it was the bottom of the poll that showed the most change.

    Highland (No. 7), John Mall (No. 8), Simla (No. 9) and Telluride (No. 10) are all new to the 2A rankings, showing that a title run in that class could be wide open come November.

    The same theory could hold true for 5A. Chatfield comes in as the new No. 1 team, jumping two spots in the process.

    Despite a five-set loss to Cheyenne Mountain, Caparral jumps from No. 2 to No. 6.

    Three new teams broke into the 5A rankings with Highlands Ranch landing at No. 5, Mountain Vista coming in at No. 8 and Lakewood breaking in at No. 9.

    Cheyenne Mountain and Lewis-Palmer hang on to the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the 4A poll.

    Holy Family notched the biggest jump of the week, leaping three spots to land at No. 5.

    At No. 10, Eagle Valley is the only new team to the 4A poll.

    Only one team broke into the 3A rankings as well as Middle Park comes in at No. 10. Resurrection Christian made a big jump to land at No. 4 this week. The Cougars were sitting at No. 9 in the preseason rankings.

    Eaton holds on to the top spot in 3A.

    Kit Carson takes over the No. 1 spot in 1A thanks to a 2-0 start. Previous No. 1 Fleming is also undefeated on the year, but dropped one spot to No. 2.

    Weldon Valley (No. 4) and McClave (No. 10) are the two newcomers to the 1A poll.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Football roundup: Durango’s Gavin Mestas has a crazy good game against Delta

    Well, welcome to the 2016 season, Gavin Mestas.

    The Durango junior was all over the field in his team’s 21-20 win against Class 2A No. 4 Delta in Zero Week on Friday night.

    A wide receiver, defensive back and kicker, Mestas did the following on Friday night:

    That last feat earned him an entry into the state record book. Mestas is the 22nd player in the history of the sport to return a kickoff at least 99 yards, and he is now tied for the ninth-longest return ever.

    Mestas had 241 yards and three touchdowns receiving, and 48 tackles and four interceptions on defense last season as the Demons reached the Class 4A quarterfinals.

    Durango has moved down to 3A this season.

    Kent Denver gave coach Scott Yates his 305th career win. He is now one away from tying the all-time wins record.

    West Grand coach Chris Brown is currently tied with Pat Panek at 306 career wins. West Grand begins its season next week.

    This was the first-ever varsity game for Prospect Ridge Academy.

    Notables

    • Sedgwick County, the defending champion in 8-man, opened its season with a 58-0 win over Creek Valley (Neb.). The Cougars have now won 14 games in a row — the longest active streak in the state. Buena Vista (1A) and Pueblo East (3A) also enter the 2016 season with 13-game winning streaks, but neither team plays in Zero Week.
    • In 2A, No. 8 Resurrection Christian had 23 unanswered points as the Cougars beat No. 9 Sterling 34-6.
    • In 8-man, a top-10 matchup between No. 2 Akron and No. 8 Granada didn’t exactly live up to the hype as the Rams rolled 59-0.
    • Bayfield had its 12-game winning streak snapped with a 19-0 loss to San Juan (Utah).
    • 3A No. 2 Roosevelt, runner up a season ago, opened its season with a 39-0 win against Thornton.
    • Grand Junction Central nearly pulled off an upset, but 3A No. 6 Palisade held on with a 31-26 win.
    • 3A No. 7 Rifle beat Basalt 48-34.
    • Another top-10 team in 3A, Holy Family (No. 9), opened with a 40-19 win at Mountain View.
    • 1A No. 4 Crowley County beat Colorado Springs Christian 32-22. And No. 10 Meeker beat Highland 18-8.

    AURORA — Valor Christian’s athletic department had a banner season in 2015-16, leading the state with seven team championships.

    In terms of individual sports, Cheyenne Mountain led the way with 11 individual champions.

    Team Championships

    Valor Christian had the most team championships this season with seven. The Eagles won boys golf, softball, football, girls basketball, girls swimming, boys lacrosse and baseball.

    The seven titles are the most since Regis Jesuit and Cheyenne Mountain each won seven in 2010-11.

    Five teams tied for second place in the state with three team championships this season: Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Academy, Kent Denver, Pomona and Regis Jesuit.

    Colorado Academy and Valor Christian each had a state-best three girls championships, while Valor’s four titles were the most on the boys’ side.

    In all, 67 different teams won a team championship in 2015-16, including 16 teams which won multiple championships.

    Individual Championships

    Cheyenne Mountain also had an outstanding year in terms of individual titles, leading the state with 11 championships. The program was well balanced: Six championships came from its girls teams, and five came from the boys.

    Lutheran’s 10 individual championships were the second-most in the state, including a state-best nine boys titles. Regis Jesuit was third with nine individual titles, and Air Academy and Pomona tied for fourth with eight apiece.

    A total of 135 schools had at least one individual champion, and 82 had multiple champions. Of those, 21 schools had at least five individual champions.
