BOULDER — Thursday night, Regis Jesuit put itself in position to win its second straight Class 5A state championship.

Regis defeated Poudre 58-35 to advance to the championship game scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the Coors Events Center in Boulder.

It was a struggle at time for the Raiders. Regis (25-2) shot just 40.5 percent from the field and was 4-for-14 from 3-point range.

“I think it’s kind of good to get this one out of our system before the championship,” said Regis senior Justine Hall, who led the Raiders with 16 points. “We’ve just got to come ready. We started out kind of slow, but we were able to pull it out.”

Regis never trailed, but it wasn’t until a 12-1 run in the third quarter did the Raiders push their lead well into double-digit points. Senior Jordan Molyneaux’s layup at the horn to end the third quarter gave Regis a 36-19 lead heading into the final quarter.

Solid defense is what Regis leaned on. Poudre was forced into 24 turnovers during the semifinal.

“When our shots are off and they aren’t falling we definitely pick it up with our defense,” Hall said.

Hall, Anna Ptasinski (12 points) and Neffie Lockley (10 points) led the Raiders in scoring. However, Hall was just 2-for-9 shooting. She was much better from the free-throw line making 11 of 12.

Regis’ second leading scorer this season, senior Diani Akigbogun, was limited to just six points on 2-for-7 shooting and fouled out with 2:08 left in the fourth quarter.

“I think we had to rely on our defense because we didn’t have the focus we should have had preparing for the final four of the tournament,” Regis coach Carl Matte said. “If you would have told me Justine would have two hoops and Diani would have two hoops, and we still win by 20 points I would have told you, ‘No way.’”

Poudre’s aggressive defense gave Regis headaches at times. The Raiders turned the ball over eight times in the first half while only scoring 24 points in the first 16 minutes.

“I thought our defense was great. I thought our defense was the best in the state this year,” Poudre coach Curtis Glesmann said. “We showed it wasn’t a fluke against a really good team.”

Poudre did manage to outscore Regis 10-9 in the second quarter. Seniors McKenzie McDaniel and Myanne Hamm each hit a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter to help the Impalas cut the Raiders’ lead to under double-digits, 24-16, at halftime.

Matte described the Impalas’ game plan as “terrific,” but didn’t mince words at halftime with his players.

“I told them at halftime, ‘Guys, that first half was just miserable. You were just playing to play. Just do what we do,’” Matte said. “They started to calm down a bit.”

Hamm scored all 16 points for Poudre (21-6) in the fourth quarter. She finished with a game-high 21 points. McKenzie McDaniel finished with 10 points for the Impalas.

“Myanne is a phenomenal player. So are the twins (Ashley and McKenzie McDaniel),” Glesmann said. “They kept our spirits up when it got kind of rough.”

The Raiders sealed the victory making 16 of 21 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Regis will attempt to win its third state hoops state title since 2009. It will be the sixth appearance in a state championship game for the Raiders since 2006. Regis’ record in title games is 2-3.

This version of the Raiders has lost only two games this season. Both came to out-of-state teams from Long Beach Poly (Calif.) and Incarnate Word Academy (Mo.).

The defending state champions will face the winner of the last semifinal of the night, Fossil Ridge/Grandview.

“We just want to come out here and play as hard as we can and do what we do,” Hall said about Saturday’s title game.

  • Well-timed winter break sparks Poudre girls hoops’ to first final four since 1978

Poudre was a No. 3 seed in last year’s Class 5A girls basketball tournament and expecting to do big things.

Then Castle View, a No. 6 seed, hit a desperation 3-point shot at the buzzer to send their second-round game to overtime, and blew out the Impalas with a 13-3 advantage in that extra period. Boom. Season over.

In the summer, senior McKenzie McDaniel tore her ACL. Early in the 2013-14 season, McDaniel’s twin, Ashley, appeared to break her hand. Then star Myanne Hamm, also a senior, tweaked her knee.

Meanwhile, Poudre — once again expecting big things out of its season — had started 4-3. Those losses? 41-40 to Dakota Ridge on a last-second 3-point shot Dec. 11, 65-58 to Grandview in double overtime on Dec. 13 and 52-46 to rival Fossil Ridge.

“We did have a little bit of, ‘What’s going to happen next?,’” Poudre coach Curtis Glesmann said Wednesday. “Fossil was kind of the low point. We had a little ‘Woe is me’ feeling, and it was just really tough to deal with as a team.”

So there was perhaps no team in the state that had a better-timed winter break. In Poudre’s case, it was a 19-day stretch which fell just after the loss to Fossil Ridge.

“We talked over Christmas and kind of decided to have a reset,” Glesmann said.

Poudre emerged from the break with wins of 17, 18, 24 and 16 points. McKenzie McDaniel was back after just six months of rehab. (“An amazing rehab,” Glesmann said. “I’ve never seen a kid come back that strong.”) Ashley McDaniel’s injury turned out to be a ligament tear she could play through. Hamm was healthy.

The Impalas did suffer two further one-point losses before the regular season ended — one in overtime at Monarch, another at Horizon — but things started to go Poudre’s way after the break.

“The break was absolutely at a good time,” Glesmann said. “We got healthier, just kind of had a mental regroup and were kind of able to come out strong. We’ve been going good ever since.”

In the summer, Glesmann figured his team would be among the state’s best — so long as they were healthy. Now healthy, the Impalas are. They find themselves in their first final four since 1978, and have already set the school record for most wins in a season (21).

Asked if his team knew how long it’d been since the last time Poudre was in the state semifinals, Glesmann said, “They didn’t know the exact dates, but they kind of knew the recent history. … We knew that we were kind of going into uncharted waters and going to places Poudre hasn’t been before.”

Hamm and the McDaniels have led the Impalas there.

Hamm, a Colorado State recruit, averages 13.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 1.6 assists per game.

“A lot of kids will be really good at one or maybe two things in high school, but she does everything well,” Glesmann said. “She can kind of pick her spots and almost be a little bit of a chameleon and provide what we need on any given night.”

Ashley McDaniel is averaging 11.8 points and 5.4 rebounds, while McKenzie McDaniel is at 7.0 points and 4.9 rebounds.

“They’re not a very hard team to coach,” Glesmann said. “Their leadership is definitely a key factor in this run.”

Poudre will play Regis Jesuit in Thursday’s first semifinal at CU which tips off at 7. Regis, the defending champion, is loaded with talent, including six Division I recruits.

“We’re there to win the game. That’s been the goal all along,” Glesmann said. “I thought we would be at this point at some point, having to play Regis. They were the state champs last year, and they have everyone back. We knew they’d make a run, too. So we figured if we wanted to win state, we’d have to beat Regis at some point or the other. I guess Thursday’s the day.”

DENVER — It’s been a long drought for the Poudre girls basketball team, but the Impalas finally earned a spot in the Class 5A final four.

Poudre upended Cherry Creek 47-38 in Thursday’s Great 8 to advance to next week’s state semifinals in Boulder.

Cherry Creek, a number-two seed, struggled to get untracked. The Bruins didn’t score their first basket until 6 ½ minutes had expired. By that time, Poudre had built up a 6-0 lead.

Cherry Creek briefly took a lead on Laura Pranger’s 3-pointer, but the Impalas, behind twins Ashley and McKenzie McDaniel, retook the advantage, which grew to seven before a Molly Rohrer’s short jumper cut Poudre’s advantage to 25-20 by halftime.

Every time the Bruins seemed intent on making a run in the second half, the Impalas answered. Despite a height advantage by the Bruins, Poudre got good production inside from twins Ashely and McKenzie McDaniel, who combined for 17 points, but got its biggest push off the bench from Cecelia Berkner, who scored a game-high 15.

Poudre coach Curtis Glesmann said his team executed its defensive game plan well.

“We just had to make a good mess in the paint,” he said of counteracting the taller Bruins.

A big factor in that was senior Myanne Hamm.

“My first couple of shots didn’t fall,” Hamm said. “I made up for the shots I couldn’t make (with defense).”

Glesmann said playing in the Front Range League helped his team down the stretch.

“We feel like we’re battle tested,” he said.

As for helping the team make its first trip to the final four since 1978, Hamm said its been a season-long goal.

“It’s what every senior wants,” she said.

  • A-West, Ponderosa make football hires as coaching carousel continues to turn

Two further football openings were closed on Thursday when Arvada West hired Brad Pyatt and Pondoersa tapped Jaron Cohen.

Pyatt, an Arvada West grad, was part of the Wildcats’ Class 5A 1997 championship team coached by Dave Logan. He played at Kentucky and Northern Colorado after high school, and then for parts of four seasons in the NFL — mostly with the Indianapolis Colts.

Pyatt becomes the school’s seventh coach in 50 years, but third in four years. Greg Whisler took over for longtime coach Casey Coons prior to the 2012 season, and went 7-13 in two seasons. A-West is 9-21 since 2011 and hasn’t had a winning season since 2010, but was 11-2 as recently as 2009.

“We are excited and confident in what Brad will bring to the table in regard to leadership and an abundance of football knowledge,” Arvada West said in a statement. “Brad’s main goal is to bring back the prominence of A-West Football, much like he experienced as a member of the 1997 state championship football team.”

Cohen, meanwhile, moves over from a one-year stint at Hinkley. He confirmed the switch to the Aurora Sentinel on Thursday.

“I had to make a decision that was right for my family and Ponderosa will allow me to find balance in my life between teaching, coaching and being a husband and father to two young boys,” Cohen told the Sentinel.

“Tough decision for sure,” Cohen added later on Twitter. “I’m fired up to continue building on the Ponderosa tradition of excellence.”

Hinkley went 5-5 last season. Prior to heading the Thunderbolts’ program, Cohen was 24-27 in five seasons at Liberty.

Cohen will take over for Jamie Woodruff, who came out of retirement to return to the program in 2012. Ponderosa was 17-5 over the past two seasons.

The hires were just the latest in what’s been a busy offseason.

Last Tuesday, Wheat Ridge announced the hire of Poudre’s Dan Reardon to replace Reid Kahl. Reardon was 5-14 over the past two seasons at Poudre, and has a long history of coaching.

He spent seven years at Ursuline High School in Ohio, where he was 68-26 and won three state championships.

“Dan Reardon is a man of quality character and quality football knowledge and experience,” Wheat Ridge said in a statement. “He is an excellent role model that will help develop character and leadership with our students and athletes. He will be an asset to Wheat Ridge High School.”

Then on Wednesday, Lutheran shook up the small-school ranks when it hired Faith Christian’s Blair Hubbard, who had been there since 1999. At Faith, Hubbard went 148-30 and won three state titles.

Those followed other hires this offseason like Gene Hill at Douglas County, Tyler Knoblock at Heritage, Jeff Priestley at Palmer, Rob Royer at Rampart and Jeremi Calip at Vista Ridge.

A number of high-profile jobs remain to be filled. Highlands Ranch is expected to announce its choice on Friday, and schools like Chaparral, Faith Christian, Fossil Ridge and Poudre remain without coaches. Find a complete list of 2013-14 coaching changes here.

  • Poudre joins 5A girls basketball poll

    Regis Jesuit ThunderRidge girls basketball
Regis Jesuit remains atop the girls basketball ranking in 5A this week. (Mark Adams)

Poudre, winner of its past five games, has joined this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A girls basketball ranking.

The Impalas are now 16-5 and are ranked No. 10.

Regis Jesuit continued to lead the ranking, as the Raiders have all season long. In fact, the top-6 all stayed the same this week, including No. 2 Grandview, No. 3 Lakewood, No. 4 Mountain Vista, No. 5 Fossil Ridge and No. 6 Cherry Creek.

Highlands Ranch moved up to No. 7 from No. 9 and Rock Canyon from No. 10 to No. 8. ThunderRidge dropped one place to ninth.

Each of the other four No. 1 teams stayed put, too. Those are Broomfield (4A), Holy Family (3A), Lutheran (2A) and Caliche (1A).

With the regular season ending this weekend, these will serve as the final rankings of the season.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.
