  • Football rankings: Mullen, Arapahoe and Heritage join 5A poll

Mullen, Arapahoe and Heritage all climbed into this week’s CHSAANow.com football rankings after impressive wins over the weekend.

The Mustangs are No. 6 in Class 5A this week, while Arapahoe is No. 8 and Heritage is No. 9.

Cherry Creek remained the No. 1 team in 5A, getting 17 of the 18 first-place votes. Pomona dropped from No. 2 to No. 7 in Class 5A, following a stunning loss to Mullen. The Panthers held a 11-point lead in the third quarter but couldn’t hang on. As a result, Columbine takes over the No. 2 spot this week.

Ralston Valley moved up behind the Rebels and is No. 3. Valor Christian sits at No. 4, and Regis Jesuit rounds out the top-5.

Cherokee Trail is the No. 10 team in 5A this week.

    Dakota Ridge Pine Creek football
Pine Creek remained at No. 1 in 4A. More photos from their win over Dakota Ridge. (Lance Wendt/LanceWendt.com)

In 4A, Pine Creek once again received every first-place vote after they made a statement in their win over then-No. 3 Dakota Ridge on Thursday.

But it was Vista Ridge and quarterback Elway Tubbs that turned heads this week as they trounced then-No. 7 Ponderosa 57-35 Friday night. The Wolves leapt from No. 5 to No. 3 with a date with Pine Creek still on the horizon.

The Western Slope added two teams this week as Montrose comes in at No. 9 while Durango makes an appearance at No. 10.

The record-breaking numbers that Holy Family put up in the previous two weeks came to a halt as they were topped by Palisade in a big 3A matchup. The Bulldogs jumped from No. 5 to No. 3 as a result and even garnered a firs-place vote. Holy Family fell to No. 6.

Pueblo East remained No. 1 in 3A this week. Conifer was the lone newcomer in this week’s 3A poll.

A 49-7 win over Denver West keeps Kent Denver in firm position atop the 2A rankings. But La Junta received a huge surge in votes after scoring 27 points off turnovers in a 33-14 win over Eaton. The Tigers jumped from No. 6 to No. 2.

They are joined in the 2A rankings by Sterling (No. 7), The Academy (No. 9), and Alameda (No. 10).

The top three spots in 1A remained intact, including No. 1 Paonia. Resurrection Christian garnered three first-place votes after an impressive 42-6 win over Platte Canyon.

Center is the lone newcomer in 1A at No. 10.

The 10 teams in the 8-man poll remain the same, but the order changed slightly thanks to Merino’s win over Granada. The Bobcats fell from No. 4 to No. 8 and the Rams jumped one spot to No. 5.

Dayspring Christian remained No. 1 in 8-man.

Cheraw and Le Veta played their way into the 6-man rankings, coming in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. Fleming held on to the top spot in that poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.

  • Football rankings: Cherokee Trail, Rocky Mountain join 5A poll

    Rocky Mountain Brighton football
Rocky Mountain is the No. 10 team in this week’s Class 5A football poll. (Kai Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Cherry Creek remains the top overall team in the Class 5A CHSAANow.com rankings after a 7-6 win over Pomona Friday night.

The Bruins received all but one of the first-place votes. It was the Panthers who got that other No. 1 vote.

Following its second-straight loss, Valor Christian fell one slot to land fourth in the polls, with Columbine taking over the third spot.

Both Cherry Creek and Valor Christian will travel out of state for games this week.

Newcomers to the 5A poll include Cherokee Trail, fresh off an impressive win over Denver East, and Rocky Mountain.

Like in 5A, the rest of last week’s top teams remained at No. 1 in the polls, with some newcomers being filtered in.

Pine Creek remains the top team in 4A after its bye week. Greeley West made the biggest jump in the 4A pool, going from ninth to sixth, thanks to a 28-20 win over D’Evelyn.

After starting the year 2-0, Palmer Ridge broke into the 4A poll at ninth, followed by fellow-Colorado Springs newcomer, Rampart, at No. 10. The Rams blanked Coronado on Saturday and have yet to surrender a point this season.

Defending champion Pueblo East is still on top in the 3A poll. The top seven teams in 3A held their positions and only one team, Mead, broke in as a newcomer. They join this week’s poll at 10.

Kent Denver remains atop the 2A polls, but the biggest shake-up of the week happened right behind them. Faith Christian fell from second to seventh after a stunning loss to Florence. The Huskies joined the poll this week at eighth on the strength of their 15-12 win over the Eagles.

  • Cherry Creek, Kent Denver, Dayspring Christian new No. 1 teams in football rankings

Cherry Creek, fresh off of two impressive wins to begin the season, has ascended to the top of CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A football rankings this week.

The Bruins, defending 5A champions, beat Heritage in Zero Week, then followed it up with a 17-3 win over then-No. 4 Regis Jesuit in Week 1. They received 11 of the 18 first-place votes, and edged out Pomona, which moved up to No. 2 after getting six first-place votes.

Cherry Creek and Pomona play on Friday.

Pomona, No. 3 in the preseason, beat No. 1 Valor Christian last week. Valor Christian fell to No. 3 in the 5A poll.

Columbine is fourth, and Grandview moved into the top five following its win over Chaparral. Ralston Valley also moved up — to sixth — after its Week 1 win over Eaglecrest.

Regis Jesuit fell three spots to seventh, Fairview is eighth and Doherty moved up to ninth. Mullen is the lone newcomer to 5A this week at No. 10. The Mustangs opened the season with a 41-0 win against Gateway.

There are also new No. 1 teams in the 2A and 8-man rankings.

    Kent Denver Gunnison football

Kent Denver takes over in 2A following its win over then-No. 7 Gunnison, coupled with Brush’s loss to rival Fort Morgan. The 2A ranking added No. 7 La Junta this week.

In 8-man, Dayspring Christian takes over at the top. The Eagles narrowly edged out Norwood with 75 total points to Norwood’s 74 — despite Norwood actually getting more first-place votes (four) than Dayspring (three).

The 8-man poll added Haxtun (No. 9) and Merino (No. 10) this week.

Each of the other No. 1 teams held firm this week: Pine Creek (4A), Pueblo East (3A), Paonia (1A) and Fleming (6-man).

The biggest movers in 4A’s ranking were Windsor, which moved up to fourth and Vista Ridge, now ranked No. 6. That poll added three new teams: No. 8 Ponderosa, No. 9 Greeley West and No. 10 Wheat Ridge.

In 3A, Rifle jumped up from No. 8 to No. 4. That poll, too, has three new members: No. 7 Berthoud, No. 8 D’Evelyn and No. 9 Lewis-Palmer.

There were no new teams in 1A, though Burlington did jump from No. 10 to No. 6.

The 6-man poll added Cheraw at No. 8.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Rock Canyon leads host of new teams in baseball rankings

Three teams joined the Class 5A baseball rankings this week, and no rise was greater than that of Rock Canyon, which now finds itself in the No. 5 spot.

The Jaguars (11-1) went 3-0 last week, and led a host of new teams to CHSAANow.com baseball polls. Also joining in 5A were No. 9 Mullen (7-3) and No. 10 Denver East (11-1).

Rock Canyon beat then-No. 8 ThunderRidge and then-No. 9 Heritage last week. The Jaguars are off to their best start since opening 8-0 in 2009-10.

Mullen, meanwhile, is unbeaten against in-state teams at 7-0. And Denver East’s lone loss came to Rock Canyon in its opener, 9-7, on March 12.

Rocky Mountain remained atop the 5A poll, and Mountain Vista stayed in No. 2. Fairview bumped up to No. 3, jumping just ahead of Cherry Creek, which is now No. 4.

Fruita Monument is up one spot to No. 7 and Grandview is No. 8.

The other No. 1 teams in each classification also remained the same. Those are Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Eads (1A).

The 4A poll added No. 7 Ponderosa, and 3A has two newcomers — Valley (No. 9) and St. Mary’s (No. 10).

The 2A ranking added No. 8 McClave/Wiley, as well as No. 10 Yuma.

There are four new teams in this week’s 1A poll: No. 5 Primero, No. 6 Fleming, No. 7 Springfield and No. 10 Antonito.

Rocky Mountain, and sophomore Tyler Hyland, are the new No. 1 5A baseball. (Dennis Pleuss)

Another week, another new team atop the Class 5A baseball rankings.

Rocky Mountain became the latest team to ascend to the top of CHSAANow.com’s poll this week when the Lobos received eight of the 15 first-place votes and edged No. 2 Mountain Vista. Cherry Creek, the former No. 1, fell to third this week.

Rocky is the third team to lead the 5A ranking this season following preseason No. 1 Regis Jesuit and Creek.

Fairview stayed put at fourth in this week’s poll, and Grandview stayed at fifth. Behind them, three new teams joined: No. 6 Monarch (6-0-1), No. 7 Fruita Monument (12-0) and No. 9 Heritage (7-2).

ThunderRidge is No. 8 this week, while Regis is No. 10.

In 1A, there’s also a new No. 1. Eads takes over after getting four of the eight first-place votes. Former No. 1 Holly dropped to third. Community Christian is second.

That 1A poll added Granada (No. 8) and Cornerstone Christian (No. 9).

The other No. 1 teams stayed the same this week. Those are Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A) and Resurrection Christian (2A).

Other newcomers include No. 9 Wheat Ridge in 4A; No. 8 La Junta and No. 9 Bayfield in 3A; and No. 9 Ellicott in 2A.

  • Cherry Creek baseball takes over as No. 1 in 5A ranking

Cherry Creek is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A baseball. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

After beating two ranked teams last week, including then-No. 1 Regis Jesuit, Cherry Creek has taken over atop CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A baseball rankings.

The Bruins beat Regis Jesuit on Monday and then-No. 4 Legend on Wednesday, giving them three wins over ranked teams so far this season. They did drop a 5-1 decision to then-No. 10 Mountain Vista on Friday.

However, voters still gave Cherry Creek eight of the 15 first-place votes that were cast this week, and the Bruins totalled 124 points to lead the poll. Rocky Mountain and Mountain Vista each got three first-place votes; those two teams are No. 2 and 3, respectively.

Fairview received the other first-place vote, and moved up one spot to fourth this week. Grandview, which got a big win over then-No. 6 ThunderRidge on Friday, rounds out the top five.

Regis Jesuit fell from No. 1 to No. 6, ThunderRidge is No. 7, and three newcomers complete 5A’s ranking this week: No. 8 Pine Creek, No. 9 Arapahoe and No. 10 Ralston Valley.

There’s also a new No. 1 team in 1A, where Holly takes over. The other No. 1 teams — Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A) and Resurrection Christian (2A) — remained the same this week.

With many programs heading out of state for spring break, or simply taking time off, the next rankings will release on April 6.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.
