  • Cañon City girls basketball beats Mesa Ridge in 4A top-10 matchup

Canon City Mesa Ridge girls basketball

CAÑON CITY — Jeff Beatty predicted a good chunk of Tuesday’s game.

The Mesa Ridge coach knew that second-ranked Canon City would shoot the ball well.

And he knew that if the Tigers tried to play man defense on his star player, Kylee Shook, that she’d have a big game.

He didn’t see the drubbing coming, though.

The Tigers were 8-for-17 from 3-point land in the first half and Shook scored often, but without a second threat the 10th-ranked Grizzlies couldn’t hang. Canon City finished off Mesa Ridge with a 52-44 score in the teams’ Colorado Springs Metro League opener in the Tiger Dome.

“You have to know you’re not going to stop (dominant players such as Shook),” Tigers coach Dan Heath said, “You want to limit them, and then you want to do all the things you always do to the rest of the team. You don’t want to have so much focus on one player that you let other players beat you. We did a good job of that tonight.”

Shook had 12 points at halftime, but the rest of the Grizzlies combined for only two – a first-quarter bucket by freshman Chloe Welch. Shook ended with 23 points, and Welch scored seven late in the game to finish with nine.

“It’s very difficult (to win when only Kylee is scoring),” said Beatty, head coach of the defending state champion Grizzlies. “We were missing inside shots, we rushed our shots a little bit. That’s that youth thing. Sometimes we get in there and let it speed us up instead of playing at our speed.”

Canon City Mesa Ridge girls basketball
Canon City’s Marissa McIntosh looks to pass against Mesa Ridge on Tuesday.

It’s not a surprise they felt rushed. With the way the Tigers came out firing, the Grizzlies felt they needed to keep pace. Tigers senior standout Nicole Archambeau hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter and Emily Lambrecht added two to give the Tigers a 15-6 lead after the first eight minutes.

“We hit a lot of shots,” said Lambrecht, who finished with a team-high 14 points. “It was weird (to miss) a shot in the first half it seemed like.”

Kaylan Miller hit the team’s sixth 3-pointer in the early moments of the second quarter, and it wasn’t until Kristin Katchmar’s bucket with 6:51 left on the clock that the Tigers made a two-point shot. By that time, they’d stretched the lead to 20-8. A Lizzy McCalla 3-pointer at the end of the half made it 34-14 at halftime.

Mesa Ridge inched back in the second half to make the game look close. Welch hit a 3-pointer with less than a minute left to cut the lead to seven, but even Beatty had pretty much called off the fouling at the point.

To go with Lambrecht’s 14 points, Miller had 10 and Archambeau finished with nine. Archambeau led the team with six rebounds and Lambrecht grabbed five. Miller had a team-high six assists. Archambeau ended the game with five steals.

Canon City improved to a state-best 10-0 with the win. Its last two wins have been against fifth-ranked Pueblo West (67-65 in overtime) and now 10th-ranked Mesa Ridge.

The Grizzlies fell to 4-5 and have now lost two in a row — to Canon City on Tuesday and ninth-ranked Pueblo South (50-43) on Dec. 18.

It was the teams’ Colorado Springs Metro League opener. The Grizzlies dominated the league last year to the tune of a 12-0 record with scores averaging 68-25, and the eventual state champs finished 28-0.

The Tigers’ next game will be against Mitchell (7-2) on Thursday in Colorado Springs. Mesa Ridge will host Sierra (5-2) on Thursday.

  • Third quarter explosion propels CSCS boys basketball over Mesa Ridge

CSCS guard Ross Parker (15) looks to pass the ball into the post during the Lions’ win over Mesa Ridge Thursday night. (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow)

COLORADO SPRINGS — A lopsided third quarter proved to be the difference Thursday as Class 3A’s No. 1-ranked Colorado Springs Christian dismantled Mesa Ridge 60-39.

The Grizzlies — a young team with high ambitions — came into CSCS with hopes that an early season win over a powerhouse like the Lions could work wonders for them later in the year. But much like a loss to Pueblo Central earlier this year, Mesa Ridge just couldn’t put together a complete game.

“We set our whole schedule up to make these kids mature,” Mesa Ridge coach Paul Mileto said. “We’re pretty young so we want to mature quick and we have a lot of respect for CSCS.”

Both teams had difficulty establishing an offensive rhythm early. The game started on a good note for the Lions as Ross Parker knocked down an early three-pointer, but that was anything other than a sign of what was to come.

Almost halfway through the first quarter, the two teams had scored a combined eight points. The Lions were able to open it up somewhat, building a 14-8 lead.

Their top offensive threats in Justin Engesser and Sam Howard had only accounted for a combined four points in that span. It was with the steady hand of point guard Chris Hildenbrand that the Lions were able to bide the their time until Engesser and Howard settled in.

But even Hildenbrand thought the team’s play didn’t meet expectations early in the game.

“I think our mental emotion wasn’t there in the beginning; we were a little nervous since it was our first home game,” Hildenbrand said. “(The slow start) is on me because we try to play our game and slow it down. We wanted to make sure we were focused and could play our game.”

Engesser would settle in a bit in the second quarter where he lead all scorers with seven points to finish with nine in the first half. But the Lions continued to struggle to build and maintain a lead. Grizzlies guard Pryce Adams led his team with six points in the first half, but was the victim of a botched call that would contribute to the team’s second half undoing.

Adams was whistled for a foul on Howard, but was standing on the other side of key where the foul occurred. In trying to call the foul on Humphrey Gabriel, the officials called the number of a player that wasn’t even on the floor before assigning the foul on Adams.

“That kind of hurt us and I sat him (at the start of the second half),” Mileto said. “I had to decide if I needed him later in the game and I didn’t want to take a chance in him getting (his fourth) foul early.”

With Adams on the bench, the Lions took advantage. They outscored the Grizzlies by 16 points in the third quarter, giving them a 47-28 lead going into the final eight minutes. The Lions played ball-control offense in the fourth quarter and walked away with the 60-39 win. After scoring two points in the first quarter, Engesser led all scorers with 19 points. Hildenbrand added 14 and Howard finished with 13.

“We’ve had some games where we’ve been up big at halftime and come out in the third quarter and we don’t play hard enough,” Lions coach Mark Engesser said. “It was a three-point game and we needed to come out and focus in the third quarter and the guys did just that.”

  • ThunderRidge takes over atop 5A girls basketball rankings

With the preseason No. 1 losing earlier in the week, that left preseason No. 2 Broomfield as the presumptive No. 1.

Until ThunderRidge knocked off the Eagles on Saturday.

So when the dust settled on Monday morning, it was the Grizzlies (3-0) who assumed the No. 1 spot in CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A girls basketball rankings. They got nine of the 17 first-place votes, and had 139 overall points.

Broomfield remained at No. 2 with three first-place votes and 129 points.

Regis Jesuit, which lost to Monarch last Tuesday, fell to No. 8. Monarch is No. 3 this week after going unranked in the preseason.

Also joining the 5A poll this week is No. 6 Ralston Valley.

Elsewhere, there are also new No. 1 teams in 3A (Pagosa Springs) and 1A (Idalia).
