  • Boys soccer rankings: All three classes get a new No. 1 team

Three new teams stand atop this week’s CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings, meaning there’s a new No. 1 team in each classification.

Boulder (Class 5A), Evergreen (4A) and KIPP Collegiate (3A) all now lead their respective classes.

In 5A, Boulder moved up due in part to former No. 1 Broomfield’s loss to Mountain Range in overtime last week. The Panthers got eight of the 10 first-place votes to take over.

Fort Collins also moved up, to No. 2, as did No. 3 ThunderRidge and No. 4 Arvada West. Fairview rounds out the top-5. ThunderRidge jumped from No. 6 to No. 3 after an impressive week in which they outscored their opponents 11-3 in three games.

Broomfield fell to sixth, Cherry Creek is seventh and Rocky Mountain is up to No. 8.

Aurora Central and Far Northeast are this week’s newcomers to the 5A poll, landing at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively.

The top seeds from last week’s CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings all fell out of place this week. In Class 5A, Broomfield was topped by Mountain Range in overtime making Boulder the new No. 1.

Former 4A No. 1 Cheyenne Mountain was upset at the hands of Pueblo West, which helped Evergreen shoot to the top spot.

The occupants of last week’s 4A poll remain the same, but with Cheyenne Mountain falling out of the top spot, there was some shakeup in the order. Valor Christian jumped from No. 4 to No. 2 and Littleton landed at No. 6 this week, up two spots from their ranking last week.

After recording a 3-0 win over Kent Denver Thursday, the Kent Denver Sun Devils played Fountain Valley to a 1-1 draw, allowing KIPP to take over the top spot in 3A.

Other big moves were made in 3A as Faith Christian made the jump from No. 6 to No. 3. There were also three newcomers to the 3A ranks as DSST Stapleton (No. 5), Jefferson Academy (No. 8) and Fountain Valley — fresh off its tie with Kent Denver — (No. 10) all joined the poll this week

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

Despite the top teams remaining the same in the Class 5A, 4A and 3A CHSAANow.com soccer polls, there was plenty of changes from last week.

Of the four new teams who joined the 5A rankings, two of them fell out of the polls just last week. Arvada West (No. 7) and Pine Creek (No. 9) rejoin the top 10 after playing their way out of last week’s rankings. They’re joined by Legacy (No. 8) and Rocky Mountain (No. 10), who make their first appearance in the polls this season.

ThunderRidge also made a significant jump this season, going from No. 9 to No. 6 after going 2-0 last week.

Broomfield remained No. 1 in 5A.

The 10 teams from last week’s 4A polls remained the same, but Valor Christian did jump from No. 8 to No. 4. Cheyenne Mountain continued to lead the 4A ranking.

Pagosa Springs, which was unranked in the preseason, has made the jump to No. 3 in 3A this week. Salida climbs back into the polls at No. 5 after falling out of the top 10 last week. Aurora West lands at No. 8 as the other newcomer in 3A.

Kent Denver stayed on top of the 3A poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Salida shines at cross country’s Warrior Invitational

    (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)
Salida’s Taylor Stack won the boys race at the Arapahoe Warrior Invite. (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)

LITTLETON — Not so long ago, the Salida girls cross country team finished an emotionally charged state meet as the Class 3A runner-up.

While a second place showing was extremely solid, in some ways the result was a bitter one after a uniform incident — non-identical singlets — resulted in only five girls, not seven, toeing the line. The defending champion Spartans were inched out for the state crown in 2014 by Alamosa, 91-95.

“When something like that happens, it’s just tough,” Salida coach Ken Wilcox said. “Fortunately for a lot of our girls, they were back for another year. We have an opportunity to take something that wasn’t so positive and make it a real positive. I’ve always thought great challenges present great opportunities.”

    (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)
    Salida’s Taylor Stack. (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)

On Friday afternoon at DeKoevend Park in Littleton, site of the traditionally competitive Arapahoe Warrior Invite, Salida took advantage of such an opportunity. Senior Taylor Stack won the boys race, as he and his teammates placed fourth in a 30-team field, and the Salida girls finished as runner-up to 5A favorites Cherry Creek.

In an invite comprised of almost all 4A and 5A schools, the Spartans made a statement in their season debut.

“One of the beautiful things about cross country is you get the opportunity to run against some of the bigger dogs,” Wilcox said. “We are a school of about 300 and obviously there’s a lot of schools here that are much bigger than that. It’s just fun for us. It’s low pressure.”

On a true cross country course with a water crossing and a few gently rolling hills, Stack ran away from big-school stars — Alec Hornecker of Golden, Steven Goldy of Arapahoe, and Luc Hagen of Air Academy — in winning with a time of 16 minutes, 13 seconds. Hornecker was next in 16:20, then Goldy (16:25) and Hagen (16:49).

It was an impressive start to an eye-opening afternoon for the Spartans as all six of Stack’s teammates broke 19 minutes. A year ago on the same course, only three managed sub-19 performances for the eventual sixth place team in 3A.

“In the time we’ve been coming to Arapahoe, I have to feel that’s easily the highest our guys have placed without a doubt,” Wilcox said excitedly.

Seth Minor, Russell Orris, Kaden Sites, and Morgan Fitzgerald filled out the scoring five for a Salida team that had 215 points, fourth place behind only 5A schools Cherry Creek (132), Rock Canyon (128), and Arapahoe (64), the champions at their home course. The Spartan boys are ranked No. 6 in 3A by Milesplit.

Then, Taryn Ceglowski (6th place), Phoebe Powell, Bari Beasley, Sydney Fesenmeyer, and Olivia Lowe racked up 152 points in beating 5A No. 8 Pine Creek (157) and 4A No. 6 Palmer Ridge (171).

    (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)
Cherry Creek’s Devon Peterson and Poudre’s Luna Slater. (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)

The girls, ranked No. 1 in 3A, were only defeated by Creek (64). The Bruins rode first- and third-place finishes by Devon Peterson and Lillian Markusch to a crown.

In a meet with most big schools racing their full lineups, but some, notably Mountain Vista boys and girls and Palmer Ridge boys, holding out top runners, Salida seized an opportunity to display the strength of not only their program, but small school distance running overall.

“It’s always fun to come to a bigger meet like this and be one of the only 3A schools,” Stack said.
“It’s always our goal to kind of mix things up a little bit and make some noise for smaller schools.”

“I think as a small school sometimes it’s easy to have small dreams,” Wilcox added. “We don’t want to have small dreams. We want to shoot a little higher than that.”

Broomfield, Air Academy and Kent Denver lead the way in boys soccer’s preseason rankings, which were released on Monday.

All three teams won championships last fall. On Monday, when the CHSAANow.com Boys Soccer Polls were released, each sat atop their respective classifications.

Broomfield heads the Class 5A poll with eight of the 10 first-place votes, and 98 total points. Boulder is No. 2, and is followed by No. 3 Fairview, No. 4 Rock Canyon and No. 5 Smoky Hill.

In 4A, Air Academy got eight of the 11 first-place votes, and edged out The Classical Academy for the top spot. Cheyenne Mountain is No. 3, while D’Evelyn (No. 4) and Ponderosa (No. 5) round out the top five.

The 3A ranking is headed by Kent Denver, a unanimous pick with all seven first-place votes. Colorado Academy is No. 2.

Denver Christian is third in 3A, Salida is fourth and Coal Ridge is No. 5.

  • All-state girls track & field teams for 2015 season

    CHSAA state track and field
    (Kai Casey/CHSAANow.com)

The 2015 all-state girls track and field teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created based upon results at the state meet.

Athletes of the year were selected based upon the number of team points they produced at the state meet. This means that they received the full amount of team points from individual events they participated in, as well as one-fourth of the total points earned by the team in relays they participated in.

Finally, in order to be considered for athlete of the year, they must first have made the all-state team by winning in a championship.

The 2014-15 all-state girls basketball teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a week-long vote of coaches.

A specific player of the year vote was held in each class, as was a vote for coach of the year.
