  • Reid Kahl gets fresh start with defending 2A football champ Brush

    [dropcap]R[/dropcap]eid Kahl is no stranger to defending state championships. Kahl was able to secure Class 4A titles in 2006 and 2008 while he was the head coach at Wheat Ridge.

    Now he has the task of defending a 2A championship. Only, unlike those at Wheat Ridge, this is not a state championship that he won. This offseason, Kahl was hired by Brush to take over for Randy Dreitz. Dreitz left the team in March after leading the Beetdiggers to the 2A state championship.

    “After the season was over last year, everybody pretty much knew that Randy was going to retire,” Kahl said. “I didn’t think much about it until later in the spring when the job opened up. I had a lot of people from the community reach out to me and show a lot of interest in me doing it.”

    The start of Brush’s title defense is a more interesting story for Kahl himself rather than the team. The Beetdiggers kick their season off by traveling to Fort Morgan on Sept. 4. Kahl was a standout football player for the Mustangs, who happen to be the Beetdiggers’ rivals.

    “I’m going to be completely honest with you, and I’m not just saying this, it’s been a much bigger deal for everyone else than it has been for me,” Kahl said. “It’s been since 2001, which was my last season in Fort Morgan.”

    Karl left the Farmers after the 2013 season and took last year off before taking the job at Brush. It was a summer of turnover at the school as a new principal and athletic director were named at the same meeting.

    To echo the sentiment of Kahl, it was really the community support that brought his name into the coaching search since there wasn’t an athletic director to include him in it.

    “None of us that hired Reid were here,” said athletic director Scott Hodgson, who is also in his first year at the school after coming over from Holly. “Once we found out that was the choice, we were really happy. He’s had great success everywhere he’s been.”

    Karl comes in this season with the task of defending a state championship that he was not a part of. The Beetdiggers also lost a big senior class, including 2A player of the year Kyle Rosenbrock.

    Fair or not, this young Brush team comes into the season, not only with a new coach, but also with a target on its back.

    “It’s a different situation and it’s not an easy situation,” Kahl said. “They graduated a ton of seniors last year and I have a really inexperienced team. We all know that there’s a big target on our back and I talked to the kids about it when I first met with them.”

    But that won’t matter to the teams on the opposite sideline. They’ll only see “Brush” on the jerseys and they’ll know that was the last team to walk away as state champions.

    Besides, Brush opened up as preseason No. 1 in 2A on Monday.

    Karl knows the expectations are high and that he is walking into a program that will expect him to win. His track record at Wheat Ridge indicates that he can find success. His plan is to just run the systems that he’s comfortable running and hope that it translates into wins for the Beetdiggers.

    “I’ve installed a lot of the same offense that I run wherever I’m (coaching),” Kahl said. “We spent a lot time on it over the summer and the kids have done a nice job picking it up.”

    He gets his chance to see just how well they’ve picked it up when Brush travels to Fort Morgan on Sept. 4. Kahl has plenty of good memories from when he was with the Mustangs but knows once the ball kicked-off, it’s time to focus on his job as the coach of the Beetdiggers.

    “After 26 years of coaching, it’s not like I was there yesterday,” Kahl said. “I think it seems to be a big to people on the outside and not so much for me.”

  • Defending champs top 5 of 7 preseason football rankings

    Defending champions rule the preseason football rankings, save for two classifications.

    Pine Creek (Class 4A), Pueblo East (3A), Brush (2A), Paonia (1A) and Caliche (8-man) all won championships last season — and each one sat atop their respective classfication when the preseason CHSAANow.com Football Polls were released on Monday.

    Only Valor Christian (5A) and Fleming (6-man) are preseason No. 1 teams without being a defending champion. Valor was the runner-up in 5A last season, while Fleming was a semifinalists in 6-man.

    The 5A voters were pretty determined that the top three teams this season would be Valor, Cherry Creek and Pomona. Each team received at least one first-place vote, and the trio separated themselves from the rest of the field by more than 50 points each.

    Valor got nine of the 15 first-place votes and totaled 140 points. Cherry Creek, last season’s 5A champion, is No. 2 with four first-place votes and 134 total points. Pomona got one first-place vote and is No. 3 at 123 total points.

    At No. 4 is Regis Jesuit and new coach Dan Filleman. Perennial contender Columbine rounds out the top five.

    Fairview, led by senior star Carlo Kemp, checks in at No. 6; returning semifinalist Grandview is No. 7; and Fountain-Fort Carson is No. 8.

    Ralston Valley, another semifinalist, opens at No. 9, and Doherty rounds out the ranking at No. 10.

    The 4A ranking featured the lone unanimous top-ranked team in Pine Creek. The two-time defending champion Eagles, who feature Nebraska commit JoJo Domann, got all 12 first-place votes and totaled 120 points.

    Longmont, the 4A runner-up, is No. 2; Dakota Ridge is third; and Falcon (No. 4) and Denver South (No. 5) round out the top five.

    In 3A, defending champion Pueblo East returns a stacked roster, but will have a new coach in interim head Lee Meisner. Even still, the Eagles got 13 of the 14 first-place votes in 3A, and lead the ranking.

    Fort Morgan got the other first-place vote and is No. 2 to begin the year. Evergreen is third, Holy Family is fourth and Palisade is No. 5.

    Brush, another team looking to defend its title, led the 2A poll with seven of the 10 first-place votes. The Beetdiggers, too, have a new coach: Reid Kahl. Kent Denver, last year’s runner-up, opens at No. 2.

    In the 1A ranking, Paonia, the defending champion, received eight of the 12 first-place votes. Buena Vista is No. 2.

    The 8-man poll was interesting. Defending champion Caliche leads the way at No. 1 in the preseason, but four different teams received first-place votes — including Dayspring Christian at No. 3, which got three top votes. Caliche and No. 2 Norwood each got two first-place votes, and Granada got one.

    Fleming got four first-place votes to lead the 6-man ranking, while No. 2 Eads and No. 3 Arickaree/Woodlin each received one. Arickaree/Woodlin won last season’s title.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    The 2015 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues and coaches, and then a vote of coaches. Players had to be first-team all-league in order to be on the all-state ballot.

    Players and coaches of the year were also selected by a vote of the coaches.

    The 2015 all-state boys track and field teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created based upon results at the state meet.

    Athletes of the year were selected based upon the number of team points they produced at the state meet. This means that they received the full amount of team points from individual events they participated in, as well as one-fourth of the total points earned by the team in relays they participated in.

    Finally, in order to be considered for athlete of the year, they must first have made the all-state team by winning in a championship.

    AURORA — Cherry Creek’s athletic programs won a state-best five team championships during the 2014-15 school year.

    Thompson Valley, meanwhile, captured 14 individual championships to lead the state.

    Team titles

    Cherry Creek’s five championships led the way. The Bruins won boys tennis, football, hockey, boys tennis and boys lacrosse this season.

    Cheyenne Mountain (boys swimming, girls tennis, girls golf, girls soccer) and Grandview (softball, volleyball, girls soccer and poms) each won four team titles.

    Grandview’s four girls championships were the most in the state for that gender, while Creek’s four boys championships led the way.

    Eaton, Colorado Academy, Lyons and Valor Christian all won three total team championships.

    In all, 65 teams won at least one team title in 2014-15, with 17 winning at least two.

    Individual titles

    Thompson Valley had eight boys and six girls win individual championships in 2014-15 to account for its state-best total of 14.

    Cherry Creek was second with 13, and Pomona was third with 10. Lyons won eight, while Air Academy and Cheyenne Mountain each captured seven individual crowns.

    A total of 131 schools had at least one individual win a championship. Of those, 73 schools had at least two champions, and 10 had as many as five.

    DENVER – If trying to win his first state championship wasn’t enough stress, Rocky Ford senior Nate Finnell had the weight of his entire team on his shoulders Saturday night.

    Finnell came into the 220-pound title match with the Meloneers trailing Meeker in the Class 2A state tournament standings by one point. A victory would send Rocky Ford to its first championship in 25 years – a loss would have wrapped it up for the Cowboys.

    Finnell rose to the occasion in the biggest way possible, landing a takedown in the final seconds of the second period. He kept Sedgwick County/Fleming’s Levi Davis down for the entire third period to earn a 4-2 decision and a state title for his teammates – the first since the AA crown in 1990.

    “My coach told me before not to worry about, just go out and wrestle your match,” Finnell said. “I did that and got it done – what means more than anything to me is that team title.”

    Rocky Ford finished the three-day tournament with 134 points and two individual champions. Meeker placed second with 131 points, followed by Paonia (125.5), Centauri (109.5) and Norwood/Nucla (98).

    “We’ve lost some state titles that same way, by one or two points, two years in a row,” Meloneers coach Mike Jurney said. “These kids just came out and wrestled their hearts out. For it to come down for us to win a match for Nate, it was just amazing.”

    Finnell and sophomore Jacob Rodriguez claimed their first state titles, with Rodriguez winning the 106-pound title with a 5-3 decision over Akron’s Tanner Watson. But the team championship ultimately ruled the night.

    “It means everything in the world,” Jurney said. “These kids have put in a tremendous amount of work. We’ve been close, knocking on the door, but to finally get through the door is fantastic. It’s great tradition and a great town, and we’re happy to bring it home to them.”

    It was a record-setting night overall in the 2A ranks. Paonia’s Jesse Reed became the 18th Colorado wrestler to win four state titles with a victory at 126 pounds. Eagles junior Bo Pipher (138 pounds) and senior Zach Milner (160) each took home a second consecutive title as well – Pipher landed a first-period pin of Baca County’s J.D. Chenoweth, and Milner won 3-2 in overtime over Norwood/Nucla’s Tim Armintrout.

    Meeker junior T.J. Shelton and Centauri senior Jareb Aziz joined the three-time state champion club. Shelton pinned Centennial’s Jose Cisneros in 50 seconds to claim the 170-pound crown and set himself up for a shot at a fourth title next season.

    “It’s amazing. It’s been amazing every state title I’ve had,” Shelton said. “It’s been a great experience with great people and great matches.”

    Aziz closed out his prep career with an undefeated season after pinning Fowler’s Blaine Larson in 3:51.

    Aziz said he would never have reached this point without the help of his coaches. Going out with three pins in four matches just made it that much sweeter.

    “It felt good. I wrestled him last week, so I knew it would be a little bit tougher this week,” Aziz said. “But I knew I could cap it off and win it again.”

    A handful of returning state champions also brought home a second state title. John Mall sophomore John Andreatta posted a 15-0 technical fall at 113 over Centauri’s Quinton Montague. Norwood/Nucla senior Talon Harris pinned Lyons’ William Hickman at 120, and Holly’s Ryan Nordyke pinned Meeker’s Anthony Watt in 4:49 at 145 pounds.

    Swink senior Austin Coy capped a prep career that saw four trips to the state finals with his first championship. Coy withstood a late reversal for a 3-2 decision at 132 over Highland’s Jake Trujillo, who almost took it home with a near fall before time ran out.

    After three consecutive losses in championship matches, Coy made the most of his final chance.

    “If you get it early on, then compared to that every time is a failure,” he said. “Building up to it in the long run, I’m glad it worked out this way.”

    Buena Vista junior Keegan Wentz also got over the hump with a 2-0 decision to land the 182 title over Sedgwick County/Fleming’s Brandon Anderson. Wentz lost in the finals a year ago but put that behind him Saturday.

    Crowley County senior Bryce McCracken posted a 4-1 decision at 152 over Meeker’s Casey Turner, and Limon junior Jayden Hilferty also earned his first state title with a 3-1 victory over Crowley County’s Keith Dunnagan in double overtime at heavyweight.

  • Buena Vista’s Wentz wants to write a new wrestling ending

    DENVER – Keegan Wentz is ready for his fortunes to change.

    The Buena Vista junior, the top seed in the Class 2A state tournament at 182 pounds, has already experienced a whirlwind prep career. A year ago he fell in the 3A title match to Centauri’s Jareb Aziz, dropping an 8-3 decision.

    In the fall, Wentz quarterbacked the Demons to the 1A football championship game, only to have Paonia emerge with a 21-7 victory. Those two setbacks, combined with a 2012 title-game defeat to Cedaredge, have driven Wentz to find a way to climb to the top.

    “That definitely sparked something,” Wentz said Thursday after opening the 2A state tourney at Pepsi Center by pinning Centennial’s Jusiv Edwards in 1 minute, 3 seconds. “Three years through high school and I’ve lost three state championships. That’s a chip on my shoulder right there.

    “Hopefully I can get it turned around and make the fourth one a good one.”

    Buena Vista is tied for 11th place after the first day with 11.5 points. Rocky Ford is sitting in first with 30 points, followed by Centauri (29.5), Paonia (26), Meeker (19.5) and Swink (17.5).

    Wentz takes his 34-1 record into Friday morning’s quarterfinals against Meeker junior Devon Pontine. A victory there would send him into Friday night’s semifinals.

    “He’s been down here before, he’s not scared of the lights,” Buena Vista coach Jared Todd said. “He’s been in the moment before.”

    Wentz isn’t the first quarterback to translate his skills onto the wrestling mat. Former Demons signal-caller Koby Close, a teammate of Wentz’s his freshman year, also competed in both sports.

    Wentz threw for 1,247 yards and 23 touchdowns to go along with 1,301 rushing yards and 18 more scores in the fall, helping Buena Vista get back to the championship game. Todd said that the junior is mentally strong and very intelligent, which has helped him succeed on the field and on the mat.

    “There’s some advantages to it, but my mindset is a lot different. I don’t have to lead a whole team,” Wentz said of making the transition from quarterback to wrestler. “I’m not responsible for everybody, wrestling is an individual sport. I feel like I’m more on top of things when I come into wrestling because it’s just me rather than 11 guys.”

    After falling to Aziz in the 195-pound title match, Wentz said he came back this winter more focused than ever. He dropped to 182 as the Demons moved down a classification.

    “Losing that definitely affected my whole season,” Wentz said. “Every practice was 100 times better in my opinion. I’d say I worked twice as hard as I worked last year. I just knew if I trusted in the work I put in, it would pay off in the end.

    “Hopefully we’ll see results here in a couple of days.”

    Swink off to a strong start

    To say that Swink senior Austin Coy has some added incentive to go out on top in his final state tournament is just a bit of an understatement.

    Coy has advanced to the title match in each of his previous three seasons at state, only to fall just short each time. The Lions standout opened up Thursday afternoon with a pin in 1:09 over Fowler’s Sean Graham at 132 pounds to advance to the quarterfinals.

    “Intensity in the room is a lot more since me and a lot of my teammates are all seniors,” Coy said. “We’ve definitely picked it up.”

    In his first two seasons Coy fell by decisions of 2-0 (in overtime) and 1-0. A year ago it was Paonia’s Jesse Reed who emerged with a 6-4 decision to clinch his third state championship.

    On Thursday Coy caught Graham in a headlock to advance to the quarters, where he’ll face Merino’s Marcelinio Baptista. He admitted it was nice to get the first match out of the way but added that the opening day of the tournament gets more enjoyable each year.

    “The first time you come here you don’t have any fun because you’re just really nervous,” Coy said. “It’s part of the confidence, just relaxing and having fun with it.”
    Also winning first-round matches for Swink were seniors Jaden Valdez-Barela (120 pounds), Noah Ferris (126), Blake Denton (145), and Seth Mills (160).

    Returning champs roll into quarters

    The top seeds in 2A all pinned their way into the next round, with the quickest fall coming at 37 seconds from Akron’s Tanner Watson at 106 pounds.

    Paonia senior Jesse Reed began his pursuit for a fourth consecutive state title with a first-period pin of Merino’s Remington Canfield at 126 pounds. Chasing a third championship, Meeker junior T.J. Shelton pinned Custer County’s Kody Aldrich in 1:18 and Aziz pinned Ellicott’s Avery Whitlock in 1:06.

    Other returning state champions to advance were John Mall’s John Andreatta (120), Norwood/Nucla’s Talon Harris (120), Monte Vista’s Jose Duran (126), Paonia’s Bo Pipher (138), Swink’s Denton (145), Holly’s Ryan Nordyke and Paonia’s Zach Milner (160).

  • Poudre wrestling joins 5A rankings at No. 9

    Poudre joined this week’s On The Mat wrestling rankings in Class 5A at No. 9.

    Other newcomers include Strasburg (No. 7) and Berthoud (No. 10) in 3A, as well as Hotchkiss (No. 6) and Burlington (No. 7) in 2A.

    Each of the No. 1 teams stayed the same this week: Paonia (2A), Brush (3A), Thompson Valley (4A) and Arvada West (5A).
