  • Late surge has Cheyenne Mountain in control for 4A golf title

CARBONDALE — Kylee Sullivan’s last three holes of Thursday’s round may have been the boost Cheyenne Mountain needed.

She went one-under in those three, including a birdie on 18 to help the Indians to a five-stroke lead at the girls Class 4A state golf tournament.

Sullivan is also in contention for the individual title, sitting three strokes behind Jefferson Academy’s Jennifer Kupcho. As great as an individual title might be for Sullivan, she only has one focus for this weekend.

“The team,” she said without hesitation. “I definitely want another team title, I just think it’s big for the rest of them. An individual title would be great, but it would be fantastic to get another team title.”

Four straight groups on Thursday featured golfer from both Cheyenne Mountain and second-place Colorado Academy, which sits at 40-over as a team.

They were paced by Cassie Kneen who finished at 10-over for the day with eight pars. The important thing is that she didn’t let herself get into trouble and never scored higher than bogey.

Her teammate Kacey Godwin also placed in the top 15 for individuals and would’ve been higher save for taking a nine on the 17th hole, a hole that plagued many golfers during the day.

“They played well,” Mustangs coach Beth Folsom said. “We’re a young team and we were third last year and we were hoping we could improve on that a little bit.”

Folsom knows that her team has a lot of work to do in order to keep pace with the Indians. Cheyenne Mountain is the defending 4A champion so coach Bill Paulson has had his team in this position before. He’s confident that they can step up and make shots when they need to, even with a five-stroke lead.

The last thing Paulson wants is a weather issue to cut the tournament short and have the Indians declared championships without playing out the rest of the tournament.

“(Folsom) and I went to (CHSAA associate commissioner) Tom Robinson and asked what he thought about an 8 a.m. shotgun start to get everyone out there,” he said. “We’d have a better chance of getting it in, even if we have to pull them off early.”

For now, the tournament remains on as scheduled for its normal 8:30 a.m. start using a regular format.

Playing a second day would also help Sullivan, who trails Kupcho by three strokes. Kupcho birdied two of the last three holes to get to two-under par. She even came away with a birdie on 17, a hole that handed then leader Erin Sargent (Silver Creek) a triple-bogey.

“I fought back a lot today,” Kupcho said. “I had to doubles and a bogey and a lot of birdies. I was just trying to play the best I could after all the trouble I was getting into.”

  • 3A girls soccer quarterfinals roundup: Kent Denver moves on to semis

Kent Denver is moving on to the Class 3A girls soccer semifinals. They were able to sneak by Peak to Peak with a 2-1 victory, setting up a rematch with league foe Colorado Academy.

The fourth-seeded Sun Devils got on the board in the 22nd minute with a goal from Peyton Brophy to take a 1-0 lead a score that held up until halftime.

Darcy Neureiter increased the lead to 2-0 in the second half and No. 5 Peak to Peak was finally able to respond with a penalty kick to cut the lead in half.

But that would be the most offense they could generate and Kent Denver emerged with the win.

At Jefferson Academy: This game couldn’t be decided in 80 minutes. The teams found themselves locked in a 1-1 tie at halftime, with Jefferson Academy taking a 2-1 lead in the second half.

However, the Wolverines wouldn’t give in and they were able to tie the game, sending it to overtime.

But it was just a minute in that the Jaguars found the net, earning a bid into the semifinals.

  • Photos: McCoy’s hat trick leads No. 1 Colorado Academy past No. 3 Jefferson Academy

BROOMFIELD — Marin McCoy had a hat trick to lead No. 1 Colorado Academy girls soccer past No. 3 Jefferson Academy, 6-1, on Tuesday.

McCoy scored the first goal of the game in the 20th minute, but Jefferson Academy’s Alycia Wright answered nine minutes later.

In the 37th minute, CA’s Julia Murphy scored on a deep free kick, but it was called back on an offside call. Not to be denied, Murphy scored 20 seconds later, which opened the floodgates for the Mustangs. McCoy added her second goal two minutes later to end the half with her team up 3-1.

McCoy completed the hat trick with another goal in the 46th minute.

With the win, Colorado Academy clinched the league title with a perfect 9-0 record. They handed Jefferson Academy its first loss of the season.

  • The Classical Academy returns to No. 1 spot in 4A girls soccer

The Classical Academy is back on top of the Class 4A girls soccer ranking.

The Titans, who were supplanted by Evergreen two weeks, returned to the top of 4A with eight of the 14 first-place votes this week.

Evergreen, which was upset by Valor Christian, dropped to No. 3. Valor is No. 2 this week.

The other three No. 1 teams — ThunderRidge (5A), Colorado Academy (3A) and Front Range Christian (2A) — all remain the same.

In 5A, Cherry Creek joined this week’s ranking. The Bruins came in at No. 9.

There were no newcomers in 4A. The 3A poll added No. 10 Frontier Academy, while 2A added CS School (No. 5).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

Columbine, last year’s Class 5A champion, returned to the girls soccer rankings this week.

The Rebels (7-2-0) are No. 8 in CHSAANow.com’s 5A poll, and actually just won a title game rematch with Ralston Valley last week.

There was a lot of shakeup to the 5A rankings, including Mountain Vista’s rise to No. 2 after beating last week’s No. 2 Rock Canyon.

Grandview also made a big jump in going from No. 8 to No. 4.

Other newcomers this week include No. 9 Cheyenne Mountain and No. 10 Littleton in 4A; and No. 9 Middle Park in 3A.

A week after three new No. 1 teams dotted the rankings, all four top teams held firm in their respective classifications. Those are ThunderRidge (5A), Evergreen (4A), Colorado Academy (3A) and Front Range Christian (2A).

Three new No. 1 teams sit atop this week’s girls soccer rankings from CHSAANow.com.

Three new teams joined the Class 5A girls soccer rankings this week.

Cherokee Trail (No. 8), Rocky Mountain (No. 9) and Grandview (No. 10) all joined CHSAANow.com’s poll.

Rock Canyon continued to lead 5A at the top, receiving eight of the 11 first-place votes. ThunderRidge is second, Mountain Vista is third, Broomfield is fourth and Arapahoe rounds out the top five.

The No. 1 teams in 4A (The Classical Academy) and 3A (Colorado Academy) remained the same. However, Denver Christian took over the top spot in 2A.

The Crusaders got five of the six first-place votes in that class, and edged Vail Mountain, which is No. 2. Vail Mountain handed former No. 1 Front Range Christian its first loss last week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.
