  • Football rankings: Buena Vista moves to top of 1A

Buena Vista has taken over the top spot of the CHSAANow.com Class 1A football rankings following their 53-12 win over Centauri and former No. 1 Paonia’s 35-0 loss against Bayfield.

The Demons are the only new No. 1 seed after a week filled with few upsets.

Cherry Creek remains in the top spot of 5A as the Bruins had a bye this week. They traveled to Utah two weeks ago where they beat Jordan 38-35. They return to the field Friday night to take on Cherokee Trail.

After dropping out of the 5A rankings last week, Grandview is back in the poll at No. 9. Columbine remains at No. 2 after beating Ralston Valley 21-7 Thursday night. The Mustangs, ranked No. 3 last week, fell four slots following their loss.

In 4A, Pine Creek remains No. 1 after drubbing Pueblo West 47-7 Saturday. But the first time this season, they were not voted there unanimously.

The Vista Ridge Wolves gained two first-place votes after an impressive 40-28 win over Palmer Ridge, who stays in this week’s poll at No. 10. Vista Ridge is now No. 2, and faces Pine Creek on Friday.

There were no new teams that joined the 4A rankings.

Pueblo East is still the top team in 3A, although half the first-place votes went to other teams. The Eagles needed plenty of offense to get by Discovery Canyon Friday night. They took the game 47-36.

D’Evelyn returned to the 3A poll after falling out two weeks ago. They got a much-needed 49-30 win over Pueblo County Friday night.

Kent Denver remains the team to beat in 2A after they shut out Ridgeview Academy 40-0. Bayfield leapt over La Junta for the No. 2 slot after its big win over Paonia.

A 28-7 win over Roaring Fork got Gunnison back in the rankings at No. 10. The Cowboys are the only 2A newcomers this week.

In 1A, Buena Vista takes over the top spot with Resurrection Christian coming in at No. 2 and only trail the Demons by a single point in the voting.

Previously unranked Limon made the biggest jump this week as they land at No. 7.

There wasn’t a lot of movement in the 8-man rankings, but Hoehne does join the poll this week at No. 10.

There were no newcomers to 6-man, although Hanover (No. 6) and Peetz (No. 7) each moved up one slot from last week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

Powered by a week in which they went 2-0 and outscored their opponents 29-0, the Valor Christian Eagles have returned to the No. 1 spot in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com softball rankings.

That was the only change at the top of the polls as Legend held strong in 5A and Strasburg remained on top in 3A.

There was a lot of movement in the 5A rankings as Chaparral jumped from No. 7 to No. 4 and Loveland rose from No. 10 to No. 5. Broomfield was the lone newcomer in this week’s poll as they landed at No. 8.

Besides Valor Christian taking over the top spot in 4A, the biggest change of the week was Mountain View jumping from No. 7 to No. 5. There were no new teams to join the 4A rankings this week.

Burlington and Cedaredge jumped into the 3A rankings at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. Eaton picked up some ground as they land at No. 3, up two spots from their ranking last week.

  • Football rankings: Mullen, Arapahoe and Heritage join 5A poll

Mullen, Arapahoe and Heritage all climbed into this week’s CHSAANow.com football rankings after impressive wins over the weekend.

The Mustangs are No. 6 in Class 5A this week, while Arapahoe is No. 8 and Heritage is No. 9.

Cherry Creek remained the No. 1 team in 5A, getting 17 of the 18 first-place votes. Pomona dropped from No. 2 to No. 7 in Class 5A, following a stunning loss to Mullen. The Panthers held a 11-point lead in the third quarter but couldn’t hang on. As a result, Columbine takes over the No. 2 spot this week.

Ralston Valley moved up behind the Rebels and is No. 3. Valor Christian sits at No. 4, and Regis Jesuit rounds out the top-5.

Cherokee Trail is the No. 10 team in 5A this week.

    Dakota Ridge Pine Creek football

In 4A, Pine Creek once again received every first-place vote after they made a statement in their win over then-No. 3 Dakota Ridge on Thursday.

But it was Vista Ridge and quarterback Elway Tubbs that turned heads this week as they trounced then-No. 7 Ponderosa 57-35 Friday night. The Wolves leapt from No. 5 to No. 3 with a date with Pine Creek still on the horizon.

The Western Slope added two teams this week as Montrose comes in at No. 9 while Durango makes an appearance at No. 10.

The record-breaking numbers that Holy Family put up in the previous two weeks came to a halt as they were topped by Palisade in a big 3A matchup. The Bulldogs jumped from No. 5 to No. 3 as a result and even garnered a firs-place vote. Holy Family fell to No. 6.

Pueblo East remained No. 1 in 3A this week. Conifer was the lone newcomer in this week’s 3A poll.

A 49-7 win over Denver West keeps Kent Denver in firm position atop the 2A rankings. But La Junta received a huge surge in votes after scoring 27 points off turnovers in a 33-14 win over Eaton. The Tigers jumped from No. 6 to No. 2.

They are joined in the 2A rankings by Sterling (No. 7), The Academy (No. 9), and Alameda (No. 10).

The top three spots in 1A remained intact, including No. 1 Paonia. Resurrection Christian garnered three first-place votes after an impressive 42-6 win over Platte Canyon.

Center is the lone newcomer in 1A at No. 10.

The 10 teams in the 8-man poll remain the same, but the order changed slightly thanks to Merino’s win over Granada. The Bobcats fell from No. 4 to No. 8 and the Rams jumped one spot to No. 5.

Dayspring Christian remained No. 1 in 8-man.

Cheraw and Le Veta played their way into the 6-man rankings, coming in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. Fleming held on to the top spot in that poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Softball rankings: Legend back on top of 5A poll

Legend has returned to the top of the CHSAANow.com softball rankings in Class 5A.

Following a 3-2 loss to Loveland, Mountain Range fell out of the top spot in 5A, allowing Legend to move in at No. 1 this week. The win also helped Loveland break into this week’s poll as they come in at No. 10.

Loveland was the only new addition in 5A, but plenty of other moves were made. Ralston Valley jumped from No. 5 to No. 2 on the strength of a 3-0 record from last week. Chaparral also made a significant jump this week going from No. 10 to No. 7.

In 4A, Frederick retained the top spot, and Erie stayed firm at No. 2. Valor Christian comes in at No. 3 and Wheat Ridge at No. 4, with those two teams trading places from last week.

Discovery Canyon (No. 9) and Pueblo Central (No. 10) are the new additions to the 4A poll this week.

Strasburg remains the No. 1 team in 3A after receiving every first-place vote. Brush cracks its way into the rankings at No. 9.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Softball rankings: Mountain Range, Frederick take over top spots

    Legacy Mountain Range softball

There are new teams atop the Class 5A and 4A CHSAANow.com softball polls this week. Mountain Range takes over the top spot in 5A while Frederick now stands atop the 4A poll.

Both teams went 2-0 last week while the previous top teams (Legend and Valor Christian) suffered losses.

In 5A, Brighton’s seven wins last week helped them jump from ninth to fourth. Eaglecrest and Chaparral played their way into the top 10. The Raptors came in at No. 8 while the Wolverines stand at No. 10.

The most impressive jump in the 4A poll this week was an unranked Wheat Ridge team coming in at No. 3 and even taking a first-place vote in the process. The Farmers were this week’s only addition to the 4A rankings.

After three new teams broke into the 3A poll last week, only one new addition came in this week as Valley comes in at No. 10. Strasburg remains the top team in 3A and the rest of the poll was relatively unchanged, save for Eaton jumping from No. 6 to No. 4.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Softball rankings see a host of changes, including new 5A No. 1 Legend

    Grandview Legend softball
Legend softball is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Legend, off to a 7-0-0 start this season, is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A softball.

Already, the Titans own wins over former No. 1 Grandview, then-No. 10 Dakota Ridge and then-No. 6 Douglas County. So it wasn’t shocking to see Legend get nine of the 10 first-place votes to lead CHSAANow.com’s poll this week.

It was only the start of the changes to this week’s rankings, as five new teams joined the 5A poll. Included was a big riser in Mountain Range, which went from unranked to No. 2.

Also new to 5A’s poll this week are No. 4 Ralston Valley — the Mustangs got the other first-place vote — No. 5 ThunderRidge, No. 7 Liberty and No. 8 Rocky Mountain.

Douglas County also made a big jump in going from No. 6 to No. 3. Fossil Ridge (No. 6), Brighton (No. 9) and Grandview (No. 10) are the other teams who remained from the preseason rankings.

4A’s poll got six new members, though Valor Christian remained atop the ranking. No. 4 Vista Ridge, No. 5 Silver Creek, No. 6 Kennedy, No. 7 Berthoud, No. 9 Mountain View and No. 10 Green Mountain all joined this week.

3A also had some changeover, though not as much. Strasburg did retain its top spot, but was joined by three new teams in the ranking: No. 7 Faith Christian, No. 9 Akron and No. 10 Lamar.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • 3A girls soccer semifinal roundup: Colorado Academy vs. Jefferson Academy for the title

Colorado Academy struck early and often, and then cruised to a win in the Class 3A girls soccer semifinals on Saturday.

The Mustangs, top-seeded in the tournament, beat No. 4 Kent Denver 4-0.

Sarah Masinter, Julia Murphy and Marin McCoy were among goal-scorers for CA.

The win means Colorado Academy will get a shot at defending their title from last season. This will be CA’s sixth appearance in a championship game. The Mustangs have won three times.
