  • 2A girls hoops Final 4 roundup: Wray, Paonia advance to title game

    LOVELAND – David Reed and Bob Rahm met at mid-court for a handshake and an exchange of some friendly words that were likely tough to hear.

    To say the two are familiar with one another would be an understatement. The Wray (Reed) and Yuma (Rahm) girls basketball coaches were playing each other for the fifth time this season on Friday night at the Budweiser Events Center, in a burning rivalry that had the added gasoline of the Class 2A state semifinals on the line.

    It was Wray that improved its record within the rivalry this season, now 3-2, in a 46-44 thriller to knock off the defending champion Indians. Reed’s team and their fans were busy letting our ear-piercing screams of celebration when he was congratulated by Rahm.

    “You have no idea how good this feels. Yuma-Wray is always something else. We’re close location-wise and performance-wise,” Reed said. “It’s an honor to play them. They’re a solid team with a great coach.”

    All throughout the first half, it looked like Yuma (23-4) would be returning for a championship rematch from a year ago, as Paonia had already punched its ticket there earlier in the evening.

    The Indians began dominant on defense, limiting the Eagles to just four points in the opening quarter. On the other end of the court, Yuma’s Cody Robinson couldn’t be slowed down as she finished leading all scorers and half of her team’s points, 23.

    But Wray (19-6) returned with a strong second-half run that finally provided its first lead of the game midway through the third quarter.

    “It was our aggression that started that change for us,” Reed said. “Once we started taking some of it out, we started knocking down shots and getting into the flow.”

    The two teams went on to exchange leads four more times in the fourth quarter. And when Wray started to pull farther away, Yuma began fouling – which sent the Eagles to the line for a total of 16 free throws in the final frame.

    Coming through under the circumstances was Wray’s Peyton Pecar, who sunk eight of her 11 free throws to finish with 12 points.

    “She struggled early, but we trust her,” Reed said. “She started to come through really well at the end and really helped secure that one for us.”

    Paige Beckman finished as Wray’s leading scorer with 16 points. Yuma’s Chasey Blach added to Robinson’s high-scoring performance with 12 points of her own.

    Wray and Paonia will play in the championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday. Yuma will face Del Norte in the third-place game at noon.

    The Eagles are back in a familiar spot.

    For the second season in a row, Paonia (24-0) will be playing for a state championship title. But it took a nerve-wracking semifinal win before they could get there. The Eagles and Tigers never got too far away from one another, and the 1-point difference in the final score illustrates exactly how things played out coming down the final stretch.

    After surrendering its first lead near the end of the third quarter, Paonia began to climb back thanks to the strong second-half performance from Sophia Anderson. Seventeen of her game-high 22 points were poured in after halftime, including nine in the final quarter.

    “Last year we finished second in the state tournament. Since then, it’s been about ‘This is our year’, and we’re going for it,” Anderson said. “It’s been our drive all season.”

    Although still undefeated and only one win away from finishing off a perfect season, Anderson said that her team’s push in the state tournament means much more. The possibility of revenge against the Yuma team that defeated them in the title game a year prior was what they had in mind, but things didn’t pan out that way.

    “It’s the rematch we want,” Anderson said before the Yuma-Wray semifinal game later in the evening. “But if (Wray) pulls through, we’ll be ready for them, too.”

    Emily Peiper added to the Eagles’ offensive effort with 13 points. Kendra Parra led Del Norte (16-9) in scoring with 14 points, while Bailey Jones and Kathleen Martinez also reached double figures with 13 and 12, respectively.

    No matter the result of Saturday’s title game, it will be the final one for Anderson and the three other Paonia seniors.

    “It’s going to be tough, that last game,” she said. “But if we give it all we’ve got when we walk off the floor, that’s all we can ask for.”

    LOVELAND — The Paonia girls basketball team’s perfect season remains unblemished.

    The Eagles, who entered the Class 2A state tournament at the Budweiser Events Center on Thursday as the No. 2 seed, continued their undefeated roll with a 55-44 victory over No. 7 Swink in the opening round.

    But the game was closer than the score suggests.

    Paonia, which has won all but one of its now 23 games by double digits, was tested by a Lions squad that also boasted an impressive resume. Swink had lost only twice before Thursday, and those defeats were to teams that finished No. 2 in 2A (Del Norte) and No. 4 in 3A (Centauri) in the final CHSAANow.com rankings of the season.

    “That’s a team that probably shouldn’t have been a 7-seed,” Paonia coach Scott Rienks said. “(Swink coach Curt Lewis) is one of the best coaches in Colorado, and you know when you play him that he’s going to have his kids ready.”

    The Eagles and Lions exchanged strikes throughout a tight-knit first half. Paonia leaned heavily on senior Emily Peiper, who finished with a team-high 16 points, to get its offense going early on.

    After facing a slight, two-point halftime deficit, the Eagles put together an 11-2 run following the break to put themselves in position. But the Lions then found a way to match that pace and never trailed by more than eight points, pulling to within one late in the game.

    Senior Sophia Anderson came through for Paonia in the second half, scoring 11 of her 15 points after halftime. Swink sophomore Brianna Denton led all scorers with 18 points and her teammate Kyla O’Neal put up 15.

    “Having Sophia (Anderson) on the court in the second half was big. I need her on the offensive end,” Rienks said. “We know, with our pressure, that we can wear teams down. And that’s a big thing.”

    Paonia advances to the Final 4, where they will face Del Norte at 4 p.m. Friday. Swink will play Haxtun at 11:45 a.m. Friday in the consolation semifinals.

    (1) Yuma 43, (8) Ignacio 18

    A dominant second half powered the defending champion Indians past the Bobcats in first game of the state tournament on Thursday morning.

    Ignacio (16-7) hung close with top-ranked Yuma (21-3) for the first two quarters, facing just a five-point deficit going into halftime. The Indians then broke the game open with a 17-4 advantage in the third quarter and never let up.

    Yuma’s Cody Robinson finished as the game’s leading scorer with 19 points. Her teammate Avery Whitehead added another 10 points, which included hitting a pair of key of 3-pointers in the third quarter that put her team up for good.

    The Indians advance to Friday’s semifinals, where they will play Wray at 7 p.m.

    Ignacio was led by Alejandra Lujan, who had a team-high eight points, while Morgan Herrera contributed seven. This was the Bobcats’ first state appearance since 2013 and first under fourth-year coach Shance Seibel. They move to the consolation semifinals, where they will face Simla at 8:45 a.m. Friday.

    (4) Wray 66, (5) Simla 25

    The Eagles were dominant from start to finish in the opening round, punching their ticket to the Final 4.

    Wray (18-6) boasted a strong, balanced offensive attack that featured Paige Beckman and Morgan Smith, who finished as the game’s top scorers with 12 points each. Megan Godsey and Paige Brown were also big factors with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

    Simla (19-5) was unable to post a double-digit scoring quarter and suffered from getting out to a slow start and early 7-0 deficit. Jerraldawn Rector finished as the Cubs’ leading scorer with six points.

    The Eagles will face top-ranked Yuma in the Final 4 at 7 p.m. Friday. The Cubs will meet Ignacio in the semifinals of the consolation bracket at 8:45 a.m. Friday.

    (3) Del Norte 59, (6) Haxtun 44

     It was anybody’s game at halftime, as the Tigers and Bulldogs went back and forth only to be separated by just three points after two quarters. Then the separation began.

    Del Norte (22-2) returned to the floor with a 14-3 run after the break, creating a gap that proved to be too big to recover from for Haxtun (19-5)

    Bailey Jones was the star of the game, scoring an eye-catching 27 points that included going 8-for-8 and the free-throw line and knocking down a trio of 3-pointers. Teammate Kendra Parra also reached double figures with 10 points.

    Dawson Knode finished as the Bulldogs’ leading scorer with 21 points, while Callie Dickerson added 11.

    Del Norte advances to the Final 4, where it will face No. 2 Paonia at 4 p.m. Friday. Haxtun will play No. 7 Swink in the consolation bracket at 11:45 a.m.

  • Girls golf preview: New 3A class gives more girls the opportunity to compete

    With great numbers comes great opportunity.

    In high school athletics, that is the name of the game after all: opportunity.

    That will be afforded to more girls this spring as golf will begin play with a third classification for the first time.

    In 2017, the state of Colorado will feature 104 golf programs. The numbers are there, meaning that it was time to widen competition and add a third class in order to provide more chances for girls from smaller schools not just to participate, but to compete.

    “It was going to be very difficult with a classification as big as 4A and 5A was for a lot of our smaller schools to be able to compete,” said golf committee chair Mike Hughes, the athletic director at Vista PEAK. “Even though it’s an individual sport, there is still a team component. To have a sport with such a big swing from the smallest schools in the state to schools with about 1,300 kids makes it fairly tough for those schools to compete.”

    That’s not to say that schools that are 3A schools that were competing in Class 4A weren’t succeeding. Colorado Academy claimed the overall team title. This year, the Mustangs will compete as a 3A team.

    Kent Denver’s Marin Halvorsen and Rifle’s Elly Walters both excelled individually last year and as a result, made the CHSAANow.com all-state team. Both will return to the links this spring, looking to claim individual golf championships and better placings for their teams.

    “It’s exciting,” Walters said. “Obviously Colorado Academy is still in our classification and they’re going to be really good again, but I’m excited because as a team too, I really think we have a chance (to compete).”

    But for smaller schools with some potential lower participation numbers, the overall addition of a 3A class can provide girls a chance to do things they maybe couldn’t do a year ago.

    “I think it’ll give more girls an opportunity to say that they’ve played in a state tournament,” Manitou Springs coach Ken Vecchio said. “I know in the past, I’d bet that about 65 percent of the kids that qualified were from 4A schools and the 35 were below. Having a 3A and below, I think that’ll be good for girls.”

    In each of the last two 4A tournaments, the Mustangs have only qualified one golfer for the state tournament. But now the door is open for more girls from schools like Manitou, Alamosa, Wray, Swink, and others, to step on the course at a state championship event.

    It’s not just a benefit for those at smaller schools. The creation of 3A will also see positive results in the 4A and 5A classes as well. With the classes evened out through enrollment it should provide tough competition at events such as regionals or state championships.

    “I think it’s the right thing to do,” Cheyenne Mountain coach John Carricato said. “What my understanding is that the top third in enrollment are in 5A, the middle third is in 4A and the bottom third is 3A. When you look at it that way, it certainly levels out the playing field. You still have to have stud players.”

    And that will be the case for each class. Stud players will remain atop the leaderboards, but now girls who may have finished in the top 20 now have a chance to bring home a medal.

    And with 252 total golfers set to compete at the state championship tournaments in May, more of those opportunities exist today and will continue to grow in the coming years.

    “The opportunity comes from more people and more teams potentially having success because there’s three classes now,” Carricato said. “I can draw back to last year and even though we were three-time state champs, taking second was still rewarding. Now another team gets to take second.”

    It’s another sign of increased interest and participation in high school athletics. And with 2017 marking the first year of additional chances for new players and teams to compete, it’s only a matter of time before more athletes begin taking advantage of them.

    “Anything we can do as a state and as an association that can positively impact the development and growth of a child in a positive way is going to be a win for us,” Hughes said. “How we go about structuring that and how we go about offering opportunities for kids and schools to compete is something that’s going to adjust every couple of years.”

  • State wrestling quarterfinals: Pueblo County’s Nava advances in tough 113-pound bracket

    DENVER — Pueblo County’s Josiah Nava won a huge quarterfinal match during the state wrestling tournament on Friday, edging Windsor sophomore Will Vombaur.

    It was a match that easily could have been contested in the finals, or at least the semifinals. But, as it was, the two met up in Friday’s quarterfinals in the Class 4A 113-pound bracket.

    Nava, who won the 4A 106 title in 2015, beat a fellow returning champion in Vombaur, who won 4A’s 106 title last season. He advances to face Shane Coffey of Canon City in Friday evening’s semifinals.

    The 113-pound bracket in 4A is one of the toughest in the entire tournament. In addition to Nava and Vombaur is Pueblo East sophomore Jace Trujillo, the reigning champion in the bracket.

    Trujillo pinned Air Academy’s James Benson in 58 seconds in his quarterfinal match.

    Hunter Willits, who is seeking to become CHSAA’s 20th four-time state champion, beat Greeley Central’s Justus Strand in the quarterfinals.

    Willits pinned Strand in 1:47. He will face Cheyenne Mountain senior Luke White in the semifinals later Friday.

    • Meeker heads the 2A team race with 72 points, with Rocky Ford (70.5) sitting in second. John Mall (60) and Hotchkiss (52) are also in contention.
    • The 3A team race is tight, with Alamosa heading the way with 49 points, and Valley just behind with 48.5. Jefferson (39), Centauri (37), La Junta (35), Sheridan (35), Lamar (33) and Platte Valley (32) are all close.
    • Delta’s Logan Church upset Mullen’s Sam Deseriere, the top seed in 3A 285 pounds, via an ultimate tiebreaker, 3-2. Deseriere had been undefeated this season, and was the reigning champion in the classification.
    • Elsewhere in the 3A 285 bracket, which is loaded, returning champion Ricky Ayala of Sheridan and unbeaten Sam Westbrook of Bayfield both advanced out of the quarterfinals and will meet in the semifinals.
    • Casey Turner of Meeker upset the top seed in the 2A 170 bracket, pinning Diego Reyes of Rocky Ford. Turner, though, is the defending champion in the division. He finished second at his regional, and thus could not be seeded in the top four of the bracket.
    • Rocky Ford’s Jacob Rodriguez had a 14-second pin in the first round of the 2A 106 division on Thursday. Friday, he did more of the same, pinning Wray’s Cole Rockwell in 45 seconds. Rodriguez is on a quest for his third state title.
    • John Mall’s Jonathan Andreatta escaped an upset in the 2A 126 quarterfinals. He led Wiggins’ Cameron Holm 4-3 late in the third period, and held on for a 5-3 win. Andreatta is a two-time champion.
    • Two other two-time returning champions advanced to the semifinals: Alamosa’s Isaiah Delacerda (3A 126) and Fort Lupton’s Jody Sandoval (3A 132).
    • Kolton Dickinson of Sedgwick County/Fleming won his first-round bout in 45 seconds. Friday, he won his quarterfinal in 44. Dickison moves to the semifinals in 2A 113.
    • Centauri’s Joe Chavez advanced to the 3A 120 semis by pinning Platte Valley’s Varrion Ciddio in 34 seconds.
    • Highland freshman Logan Lewis earned a hard-fought place in the 2A 106 semifinals. He beat Holly’s Austin Crum, 10-8, in sudden victory.
    • Sky Carlson of Soroco, a former basketball player, is into the semifinals in 2A 195 following two consecutive pins. Friday morning, he pinned Crowley County’s Tristan Laver in 1:45.
    • Del Norte’s Natalie Benavides, the lone girls to qualify for the state tournament this season, was eliminated in the 2A 138 consolation bracket by Crowley County’s Jarod Bauer.

    4A & 5A notes

    • Defending champion Pueblo County leads the 4A race with 89 points. Cheyenne Mountain and Pueblo East are tied for second with 65.
    • Pomona, the reigning 5A team champ, leads that race with 85.5 points. Brighton (61.5 is second), and Grand Junction (59.5) is third.
    • The semifinal in 5A 132 should be a great one. It will match returning champions after both won in the quarterfinals: Arvada West’s Dayton Marvel vs. Pomona’s Theorius Robison.
    • Pueblo County’s Grant Willits, who has won two previous state championships, pinned Greeley Central’s Zeke Alirez in 2:23 to reach the 4A 132 semifinals.
    • Poudre’s Jacob Greenwood, another two-time champion, pinned ThunderRidge’s David Opheim in 5A 138 to advance.
    • Three of the four quarterfinals in 4A’s 120 division ended in pins. Advancing were Pueblo County’s Nathan Bonham, Canon City’s James Ruona and Windsor’s Dominick Serrano. Pueblo East’s Andrew Lucero also won via a major decision, 9-0.
    • Erie’s Ernie Quintana beat Discovery Canyon’s Jared Turner in sudden victory to reach the 4A 138 semifinals.
    • As he tries to become the first individual champion from Niwot since 1993, senior Tommy Stager had a quick pin in the 4A 145 quarters. Stager beat Pueblo South’s Elias Espinoza in 59 seconds.
    • Glenwood Springs’ Myles Wilson remain unbeaten, and he did it quickly in the quarterfinals. The senior, also a returning champion, beat Vista PEAK’s Jayden Smith in 43 seconds. He had an 18-second pin in the first round.
    • Cheyenne Mountain’s Deonte Bridges pinned Dominic Knost of Lewis-Palmer in 33 seconds.
    • Grand Junction’s Josiah Rider continued his torrid pace in the 5A 145 bracket. He won his match in 52 seconds, a day after a 30-second pin in the prelims.
    • Mountain Vista’s Trent Schultz had a 42-second pin in the 5A 195 quarterfinals. He had a 38-second pin in the prelims. His brother, Cohl, of Ponderosa, also advanced in 5A 220.
    • Prairie View’s Brendon Woolsey won an ultimate tiebreaker over Grandview’s Robert Woods in 5A 195 to reach the semifinals.
    • Pomona’s Brandon Micale had the fastest pin of the quarterfinals, taking Smoky Hill’s Ryan Campbell down in 23 seconds.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Sterling new No. 1 in 3A

    Sterling (18-0) jumped St. Mary’s in Class 3A to become the new No. 1 in 3A.

    Sterling beat then-No. 8 Eaton 49-27 in its only game last week. Eaton fell to No. 10.

    The top five teams in 5A stayed the same with Grandview posting a 3-0 record to remain No. 1. The top five went 12-1 overall last week.

    In 4A, Pueblo West moved from No. 3 to No. 2 after a 2-0 week. Elsewhere in 4A, Valor Christian received one first place vote despite a No. 9 rank.

    Haxtun is on the rise in 2A. The Fightin’ Bulldogs come in at No. 7, up from No. 9 last week.

    Kit Carson stayed at No. 1 in 1A, as the top five teams remained the same.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. These are the final rankings of the regular season.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Valor Christian returns to 4A poll

    Valor Christian returned to the Class 4A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings this week after narrowly beating Golden on Wednesday.

    The Eagles, now 11-9, are ranked No. 10 this week.

    The top three teams in 4A remained the same with No. 1 Pueblo South leading the pack. No. 2 Evergreen avoided an upset against Green Mountain to stay in the hunt. 

    The biggest mover of the rankings goes to Heritage Christian (16-0) in 1A. The school is up three spots in this week’s poll at No. 2. The Eagles defeated No. 8 Briggsdale to leap in the rankings behind No. 1 Kit Carson.

    In 5A, Ralston Valley continued its 17 game win streak to keep pace at No. 3 in the rankings.

    5A’s lone shakeup comes with Fossil Ridge and Fairview. Fossil Ridge, ranked No. 10 in last week’s poll, switched spots with Fairview at No. 7.

    3A added Faith Christian at No. 10, and Eaton moved up two spots to No. 8.

    Paonia stayed at No. 1 in 2A with minor shakeup beneath them.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Girls basketball rankings: George Washington joins 4A poll

    George Washington is getting some well-deserved recognition in the Class 4A girls basketball rankings.

    The Patriots have broken into the poll, landing at No. 10 this week. They are winners of nine of their last 10 games and sit at 14-2 this season.

    Pueblo South (No. 1) and Evergreen (No. 2) remain in their spots from last week, but Pueblo West made a three-spot jump to No. 3 after beating No. 7 Pueblo East in overtime.

    Grandview stays put at No. 1 in the 5A, along with the overall top six teams from last week.

    No new teams broke into the 5A poll.

    St. Mary’s is still firmly entrenched in the No. 1 spot in 3A. Sterling (No. 2), Liberty Common (No. 3) and Lamar (No. 4) also hold on to their positions from a week ago.

    Olathe was the lone newcomer to the 3A rankings at No. 8.

    Paonia is still No. 1 in 2A, but Yuma made a two-spot jump to come into the week as the new No. 2 team.

    Simla breaks in this week, coming in at No. 8.

    Jim Elliot is the only new team to make the 1A poll this week, coming in at No. 10. Kit Carson is still the top-ranked team and the top seven spots overall are unchanged from a week ago.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Holy Family returns to 4A poll

    Holy Family has played its way back into the Class 4A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings.

    The Tigers grabbed wins over Erie and Mead last week, earning them enough votes to be the only new team in the 4A poll. They’re ranked No. 10 this week.

    Pueblo South remains the top team in 4A and are still undefeated against Colorado teams this season.

    Air Academy (No. 5) and Pueblo West (No. 6) each gained two spots from their position last week.

    The 5A poll also had only one new team with Fossil Ridge breaking in at No. 9.

    Grandview remains the top team in the class, perhaps even solidifying their position even more after a 70-55 win over No. 7 Cherry Creek.

    Fruita Monument comes in at No. 6, two spots better than last week’s rankings.

    St. Mary’s took 10 first-place votes to remain the No. 1 team in 3A, with Sterling still right behind the Pirates at No. 2.

    Manitou Springs jumped two spots from last week, coming in at No. 10.

    Faith Christian (No. 9) and Eaton (No. 10) are the two new teams to the 3A poll.

    Paonia still stands as the No. 1 team in 2A thanks to an undefeated record.

    Del Norte broke into the top-three, landing at No. 3, two spots better than their position last week. At No. 6, Swink also jumped two places.

    At No. 10, Holyoke is the only new team in the 2A poll.

    In 1A, Kit Carson is still at No. 1, but Fleming jumps a spot to come in at No. 2. Both teams are still undefeated.

    Antonito (No. 3), Kit/Branson (No. 4) and Heritage Christian (No. 5) round out the top half of the rankings. Each of the top five teams received at least one first-place vote.

    Cheyenne Wells is the only new team in 1A, coming in at No. 10.

  • Girls basketball rankings: St. Mary’s now No. 1 in 3A

    St. Mary’s has taken over the top spot of the Class 3A girls basketball rankings.

    The Pirates notched a win on Friday night, taking down rival (and No. 10) Manitou Springs, impressing enough voters to move up from their previous spot at No. 2.

    They take the spot from Sterling who falls to No. 2.

    Only one new team broke into the 3A poll as Olathe comes in at No. 8.

    In 5A, Grandview hangs on to the top spot while receiving the news that Michaela Onyenwere was named a McDonald’s All-American.

    Highlands Ranch jumps one spot to land at No. 2.

    At No. 10, Rocky Mountain is the only newcomer to the 5A poll.

    Pueblo South keeps the No. 1 spot in 4A with Evergreen also holding firm at No. 2.

    Mesa Ridge made a three-spot jump to land at No. 4 this week.

    Palisade (No. 9) and Windsor (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 4A rankings.

    Paonia received 16 of 17 first-place votes to keep the top spot in the 2A rankings. At No. 6 and No. 8, respectively, Lyons and Swink each jumped two spots from a week ago.

    There were no new teams in the 2A poll.

    The same situation applies to the 1A poll as all 10 teams from a week ago remain in the top 10, with just a tweak here and there.

    Kit Carson remains at No. 1, but Antonito takes the No. 2 spot from Fleming who falls one spot to No. 3.

    South Baca (No. 6) and Kiowa (No. 7) also traded spots from last weeks rankings.
