The Be The Light, Colorado movement continued to spread through the end of its first week with an inspirational display of Friday Night Lights in April.

The #BeTheLightCO trend, which started with five schools and districts on Monday night, and continued with 12 more on Tuesday, and 16 on Wednesday, has now spread across nearly 70 schools and school districts around the state.

The movement seeks to provide a beacon of hope for students during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has closed schools and put the season on hold. Schools and school districts are lighting their stadiums as a way to show students they are in our hearts and on our minds.

Hitting the road isn’t always a sign of impending doom when it comes to basketball playoffs. That certainly turned out to be the case for Pine Creek as it made its way west on I-70 for the first round of the Class 5A girls basketball state tournament.

The Eagles entered the tournament as the 39 seed, but it didn’t deter them as they left the western side of Colorado with a 29-26 win over Grand Junction Central. They’ll stay a little closer to home on Saturday when they head to Arvada to take on No. 7 Ralston Valley.

Pine Creek jumped out to a 20-8 lead at halftime but the offense quickly slowed down in the second half. Leah Redding knocked down a big 3-pointer for Central early in the fourth quarter to cut the Eagles’ lead to eight points.

Pine Creek made its way to the free throw line where Brynae Stewart made two and Jordyn Gutierrez made one to keep the game just out of Central’s reach.

Fairview’s Izzy Munson led all scorers with 19 points as the Knights battled back from a five-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter. They’ll meet Denver South in the second round.

Leaya Mckinney and Alexa Barkeen each scored 11 for the Sabercats.

(37) Brighton 63, (28) Mountain Range 53

The Bulldogs were one of just three lower-seeded teams to get wins in the first round. Their win over Mountain Range puts them in the second round where they’ll travel to Fruita Monument.

(36) Arvada West 48, (29) Loveland 38

Arvada West’s first round win sets up a matchup with Grandview in the second round.

No. 37 Longmont upsets No. 28 D’Evelyn in first-round thriller

Jordynn Lee scored 17 points to lead Longmont to a first-round upset win over D’Evelyn. The Trojans advance to the second round of the 4A tournament where they’ll see a familiar foe in Erie.

Longmont opened the season with a 56-42 loss to the Tigers and now get a chance at redemption.

Emmelia Ashton added 13 points in Longmont’s winning effort on Tuesday.

(19) Skyview 39, (46) Coronado 36

Jordan Gonzales knocked down a big 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter as Skyline held off a persistent Coronado team. The Cougars trailed by one entering the fourth quarter but Fatinah Muhammed made two key buckets to put them up by five.

But the Wolverines battled back to avoid the upset and stay alive in tournament play.

(23) Palmer Ridge 38, (42) Pueblo East 36

Eden Bonser led all scorers with 17 points as the Bears grabbed a narrow win over the Eagles. They won’t travel far for their next game as they’ll take on league rival Air Academy on Friday.

Jaylene Escajeda led Pueblo East with 11 points.

(34) Littleton 58, (31) Denver West 44

Ava Youngblood-Yazzi and Jasmyn Thompson-Harvey each scored 12 points as the Lions were one of just two lower-seeded teams to get a win in Tuesday’s slate of games.

LAKEWOOD — Survive and advance was a very appropriate motto for Golden boys soccer team Saturday afternoon at Lakewood Memorial Field.

“You just get the result you want and move on,” Golden coach Larry Harding said after the No. 2-seeded Demons sweated out a 1-0 victory against No. 31 Denver West. “They didn’t play well. They didn’t play up to their standards, but they found a way to win the game and that is what champions do. We’ll be ready for the next one.”

Golden (14-1-1 record) got off to a quick start. A feed from Golden junior Daniel Erger set up senior Christian Sekavac for a goal in the 2nd minute. It would be the lone goal of the game.

“We were lucky to get that early goal,” Sekavac said. “It was a great ball by Daniel (Erger).”

The Demons had a number of scoring chances, but failed to get any kind of a cushion in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament.

“Not at all,” said Sekavac when asked if he thought his goal 90 seconds into the game would be the only goal. “We had a lot of chances that honestly we should have finished. It was one of those games we just had to grind out.”

Golden defense was solid in front of senior goalie David Koury. The best scoring chance by the Cowboys (8-6-1) came with about three minutes remaining. Senior Francisco Bustillos popped a ball over the head of Koury, who had come out to challenge. Koury was just able to scramble back to grab the ball before it crossed the goal line.

“You never know how the game is going to shake out,” Harding said. “The other team is here to win as well. Give Denver West some credit. They gave us a hard game.”

The Demons have the task ahead of finally getting past the second round of the state tournament. It has been well over a decade since Golden has made a deep postseason run. The program has never won a boys soccer state championship.

Sekavac admitted there is some extra pressure with the Demons holding that No. 2 seed.

“We have to win Tuesday. That’s our plan,” Sekavac said. “I believe we can do it. I put all my trust into this team. It’s an amazing group of guys that are very talented.”

Golden hosts the winner of No. 18 Regis Groff and No. 15 Niwot on Tuesday, Nov. 5. That game will likely be played at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada.

The Demons are lined up to host all the way through the quarterfinals as long as they keep winning. The semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 13 at Legacy Stadium in Aurora.

“We’ve got somethings to work on. Somethings to clean up,” Harding admitted. “We’ll go back, doing some teaching and work on those things.”

D’Evelyn football beat Denver West 44-13 on Saturday to improve to 4-2 this season.

LAKEWOOD — Andy Lowry hasn’t had a problem being a football Dad in the stands of prep football games over the past four years.

The five-time state championship football coach at Columbine High School enjoys standing behind the D’Evelyn Jaguars’ sideline to watch is son Thomas Lowry make his own mark. Thomas has been a big part of D’Evelyn football program on both sides of the football as a defensive back and receiver.

“My Dad does help me out and gives me some pointers every once in a while. (D’Evelyn coach Jeremy Bennett) knows about passing and my Dad doesn’t pass it,” Thomas joked after he had four catches for 60 yards and a pair of touchdowns in D’Evelyn’s 44-13 victory over Denver West on Saturday afternoon at Trailblazer Stadium.

Thomas grew up watching his Dad win a handful of Class 5A state championships at Columbine, but the now senior at D’Evelyn decided he would go in his own direction before entering high school.

“Going to Dennison (Elementary) and D’Evelyn we kind of knew he was on that path. He was doing really well academically,” Coach Lowry said. “Coach Bennett has done a great job with his great program. Sometimes playing for your Dad is awfully hard. I not sure I wanted that pressure on him.”

It has all worked out.

Thomas is one of the top receivers in Class 2A with 32 catches for 618 yards and seven touchdowns through six games. He is a jack-of-all trades starting at receiver and safety, along with the Jaguars’ punt and kickoff returner, and don’t forget he is the holder on field goals.

“I grew up on the sideline every game at Columbine being ballboy,” Thomas said. “I’ve been around football players and coaches all my life. That has definitely helped me out with my football IQ.”

Thomas has been a ballhawk defensively with eight career interceptions.

“Thomas is an extension of our (coaching) staff,” Bennett said. “He sees things sometimes because of his upbringing on being on a football field so much. Most important for us, he is an outstanding teammate and unanimous captain voted on by his teammates.”

Columbine’s — five yards and a cloud of dust — and physical defense that Lowry brought to the Rebels’ program in the mid-1990s turned Columbine into a perennial powerhouse in the largest classification for the past two decades. However, D’Evelyn was a great place for Coach Lowry’s oldest child to thrive both academically and athletically.

“It’s a fit for Thomas,” Bennett said. “What we do and his size. He catches the ball and runs fast. I think Andy wanted to give Thomas a different experience than what he could offer (at Columbine). We are sure glad he stayed.”

Bennett admitted he was surprised when Thomas talked to him during his eighth-grade year at D’Evelyn and told Bennett he wouldn’t be leaving to join his Dad at Columbine.

“He (Thomas) has really made his own path,” Coach Lowry said. “I’m really proud of him. He has made his own success at D’Evelyn and is having a great career over there.”

Bennett said the Lowry Family has been great in supporting the Jaguars as Thomas wraps up his high school football career at D’Evelyn. Also, Bennett likes the fact that he has the chance during games to bounce things off the five-time state champion coach.

“Andy has been amazing,” Bennett said. “I’ll go to the fence every once in a while because you have Andy Lowry standing over there so go get his opinion. A lot of times he is like, ‘Gee, shoot Coach. Can you run trap here?’ Andy has been great. I think he enjoys watching his kid and not having the pressure to coach him.”

The pressure on D’Evelyn (4-2, 2-0 in 2A Flatirons League) moving forward is to keep its postseason streak in alive. The Jaguars have qualified for the playoffs for four straight seasons, but might have to win a conference title to make it five.

Opening-season losses to No. 8 TCA and No. 9 Eaton put D’Evelyn behind the eight-ball when it comes to having to possibly win its final seven games to make the 16-team 2A state tournament field.

“Just to win league to win league would be great. I think I have more runner-up finishes than anyone in the history of Jefferson County,” Bennett said. “I think it will probably take that for us.”

Thomas Lowry will be a big piece as the Jaguars attempt to win-out.

“We’ve been to the playoffs the last three years,” Thomas said. “Hopefully we can get a fourth.”

No matter what happens, Thomas will have a very experienced football coach and Dad in his corner.

“It goes so quick. It’s hard to believe he is senior,” Coach Lowry said. “I’m just really proud of him. He is a really good football player, but also a great kid and young man.”

Englewood football scored all of its points in the first half to get a 50-6 win over Denver West on Saturday.

The 2019 all-state boys track and field teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created based upon results at the state meet.

In order to be considered for athlete of the year, they must first have made the all-state team by winning an event.

Athletes of the year were selected based upon their performance at the state meet. Coaches of the year were selected based upon the team champions.
