The 2020 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.
These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.
Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.
CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.
Because there will be two football seasons during the 2020-21 school year, this is the all-state football team for Season A. There will be a separate all-state football team released for Season C.

For the first time since 2012, Wray will head to the Class 1A football semifinals.
The Eagles, the No. 4 seed in the bracket, beat No. 5 Hotchkiss 38-13 on Saturday.
“Hats off to Hotchkiss staff and players,” Wray coach Levi Kramer said. “They have one heck of a program. I was really proud of how our boys played today. We have a ton to work on next week, but looking forward to putting in the work with this group.”
After Hotchkiss scored first, and held a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, Wray scored 24 unanswered points to lead 24-7 at halftime. Wray’s Tyler Collins paced the offense with three first-half scores.
Collins kept it up in the second half when he added a fourth touchdown, this one from 12 yards out, that made it 32-7 at the end of three quarters.

(Daniel Stoeber)
Payton Wade, a sophomore, scored in the fourth quarter to make it 38-7.
Hotchkiss’Â Drayden Taylor and Blaine Peebles scored for the Bulldogs.
“Credit Coach Kramer and his kids, as they created big plays in the passing game that got them up a couple of scores,” Hotchkiss Curtis Hintz said. “They played hard for four quarters. Felt like we matched them physically in the first quarter. They hit a couple of big plays and couldn’t close the gap. Proud of this group, they had a great year. But kudos to Wray.”
Wray will advance to face top-seeded Limon in the semifinals.
“I’m proud of how my team played today,” Wray’s Tyler Collins said. “We aren’t satisfied. Our focus is beating Limon now.”

The state football playoffs are underway this week. Each bracket consists of eight teams with quarterfinals taking place this week before semifinals are played next week, ahead of the state championship games, all of which will be played at Colorado State University Pueblo.
With four games in all seven classifications, here is a breakdown of this week’s small-school matchups:

Class 2A
• • •
(8) Moffat County at (1) Resurrection Christian

(Photo: Jeremy Whitlock)
Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.
Breakdown: Scoring on Resurrection Christian (5-0) this year has been tougher than difficult. It’s been impossible. The Cougars have allowed zero points all season and scored at least 32 in each game. Will Schrotenboer has been solid under center, tossing 11 touchdown passes this year.
Despite stumbling in its season opener, Moffat County (4-1) has played solid football and rattled off four straight wins to end the regular season. Caleb Frink is responsible for 753 all-purpose yards and eight touchdowns.
• • •
(5) Eaton at (4) Pagosa Springs

(@PagosaAthletics/Twitter)
Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.
Breakdown: A traditionally strong slate of 2A opponents didn’t stop Pagosa Springs (5-0) from ending the regular season undefeated. Dylan Tressler averaged over 200 rushing yards per game to end with a total of 1,052. Grant Aucoin led the team with eight rushing touchdowns.
Eaton (4-2) suffered a couple of losses, but both were to 2A playoff teams. The team showed a diverse rushing attack as three players have rushed for over 400 yards and scored at least six touchdowns each.
• • •
(7) Lamar at (2) Sterling

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.
Breakdown: Sterling (5-0) begins its state championship defense after an undefeated regular season. The Tigers have been tough on defense, totaling 13 turnovers in their five games.
Lamar (5-1) had high expectations coming into the 2020 season and making the playoffs was a big part of that. Zane Rankin leads a balanced offense where he has thrown for 1,178 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for 417 yards and six scores.
• • •
(6) Delta at (3) Platte Valley

(Barry Smith)
Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.
Breakdown: Platte Valley (5-1) missed out on the 2020 state title game after getting there back in 2019. The Broncos have looked strong this year with their only loss coming at the hands of Sterling. Kade McDaniel has thrown for 890 yards and eight touchdowns while rushing for 600 yards and eight touchdowns.
Delta (4-1) was last year’s runner-up, but the Panthers lost star quarterback Nolan Bynum three weeks ago. Nathan Scharnhorst, previously a receiver, has completed 14 of 23 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns in the past two games, while also rushing for three scores. Timothy Horn (436 yards rushing, two touchdowns) is also a focal point of the offense.

(8) Holyoke at (1) Limon

(Courtesy of Limon HS)
Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.
Breakdown: Same story, different year for the Badgers (4-0), who are looking for a third straight title. Kory Tacha and Jeremiah Leeper have been a force for Limon, combining for 1,006 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.
Holyoke (5-1) will head into the game with some revenge on its mind. The Dragons lost to Limon 15-7 in last year’s semifinals. Miles Sprague ended the season rushing for 10 touchdowns and throwing for four more.
• • •
(5) Hotchkiss at (4) Wray

(Photo: Matt Hall)
Date and time: Nov. 21, 12 p.m.
Breakdown: There was a lot of diversity on the schedule this year for Wray (5-1). The Eagles beat Niwot but lost to Platte Valley. They also went undefeated against the 1A teams they played. Tyler Collins threw for over 1,000 yards and nearly added 1,000 rushing yards to his offensive effort this season.
Hotchkiss (6-0) put together a list of impressive wins en route to ending the regular season undefeated. The Bulldogs average over 300 rushing yards per game as a team and Mordecai White carries the bulk of that load, averaging 102.8 yards per game. He has also scored 10 rushing touchdowns this year.
• • •
(7) Meeker at (2) Strasburg

(Austin Hogan-McCool)
Date and time: Nov. 20, 7 p.m.
Breakdown: Perhaps no one was better defensively as a team than Strasburg (6-0). Through six games, Strasburg allowed a total of zero points. The team wasn’t bad offensively either as Cam Russell threw 13 touchdown passes through the course of the season.
A lot of lopsided wins defined Meeker’s (5-1) season. The Cowboys’ lone loss was a 14-8 nailbiter against Hotchkiss. Jeremy Woodward and Kelton Turner each ran for over 500 yards and scored at least seven rushing touchdowns apiece.
• • •
(6) Centauri at (3) Florence

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.
Breakdown: With a ground heavy attack, Florence (5-0) looks like it could make some noise in the 1A field. Owen Busetti and Jacob Kennedy have combined for over 800 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns.
Centauri (6-0) ran the table in the regular season and shouldn’t be counted out of any game until the buzzer sounds. Mason Claunch has rushed for 870 yards and a staggering 21 touchdowns.

• • •
(8) Crowley County at (1) Sedgwick County
Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.
Breakdown: Sedgwick County (6-0) begins its hunt for a sixth straight state title. The Cougars have been sound on both sides of the ball, outscoring their opponents 296-50 this year.
Crowley County (3-1) started the season off with three big wins before running into Flower the last game of the regular season. Senior Adam Schultz has averaged 205 rushing yards per game this year and has scored nine touchdowns.
• • •
(5) Rangely at (4) Dove Creek
Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.
Breakdown: A promising run through the regular season has made Dove Creek (4-1) a team that shouldn’t be ignored. Gage Bailey leads the Bulldogs in rushing yards (716) while Gauge Thompson leads them in rushing touchdowns (8).
Rangely (6-0) also looked impressive this year, giving up no more than 12 points in any game. Zane Varner’s 920 total rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns have been a big reason for the Panthers success on offense.
• • •
(7) Mancos at (2) Sanford
Date and time: Nov. 21, 1:30 p.m.
Breakdown: Of the five games on Sanford’s (5-0) schedule this year, only Dove Creek made the playoffs. Still, Sanford won the game 36-12, giving every indication it is ready for a state title run.
Mancos (3-1) also played Dove Creek earlier this year, but the 18-14 loss to the Bulldogs was the lone game in which the Bluejays didn’t score 50 points. Chase Moore has carried the ball 72 times for 791 yards and 14 touchdowns this season.
• • •
(6) Merino at (3) Fowler
Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.
Breakdown: After reaching the state title game in 2019, Fowler (6-0) is anxious to make another run. Both Damian Romero and Jackson Bates have rushed for at least 400 yards and five touchdowns each.
Each of Merino’s (5-1) wins this season came by at least two scores. The Rams played their regular season finale on Nov. 6 and lost to Sedgwick County 32-0.

• • •
(8) Kit Carson at (1) Fleming
Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.
Breakdown: Fleming (5-0) has been a wrecking ball for most of the season. The team had surrendered fewer than 20 points each game this season, at least until they had to grind out a 49-44 win over Granada last week. Chris Goss, Charles Hobbs and Nolan Japp have combined for 17 rushing touchdowns this year.
Kit Carson (3-1) rebounded from its lone loss of the season on Oct. 24 with a 40-20 win over Hi-Plains last Friday. Kit Carson was the No. 1 seed in last year’s tournament, but fell to Fleming 68-52 in the semifinals.
• • •
(5) Eads at (4) Granada
Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.
Breakdown: Despite closing the regular season with a loss to Fleming, Granada (5-1) had a strong 2020 campaign. Dominic Coleman finished the year throwing for 1,137 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Although Eads (3-2) suffered a couple of losses in the regular season, they came against two of 6-man’s top three teams. Damien Barnes leads the Eagles with 801 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.
• • •
(7) Briggsdale at (2) Stratton/Liberty
Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.
Breakdown: By the time Stratton/Liberty (4-0) takes the field on Saturday, it will have been nearly a month since it saw action on the field. In the first three games of the season, the Knighted Eagles scored at least 62 points and gave up an average of just over 15.
Briggsdale (3-1) has looked solid all year and its only loss of the year was by three points to Prairie. Malik Carlson has been a threat in passing, rushing and receiving and totaled 671 yards of total offense in just three games.
• • •
(6) Prairie at (3) Cheyenne Wells
Date and time: Nov. 20, 1 p.m.
Breakdown: On paper, Cheyenne Wells (5-0) looks like the biggest challenger to Fleming. The Tigers scored at least 42 points each game and surrendered no more than 38 in a single contest.
Prairie (5-1) has put together a solid resumé this season with its only loss coming to Fleming. Andy Long threw for an average of 178.2 yards per game and also threw 19 touchdown passes.

A week after losing to Rampart, Fountain-Fort Carson got revenge with a 33-17 win on Friday night.
The eighth-ranked Trojans took a 13-10 lead just before halftime, then pushed the lead to 19-10 in the third quarter.
Rampart cut it to 19-17 midway through the third, but Fountain-Fort Carson responded to go up 26-17 on a touchdown pass from Tavian Tuli to Joshua Williams, and then scored again in the fourth quarter after to make it 33-17.
FFC finishes the regular season at 5-1, while Rampart is now 4-2.
The two teams matched up for a second-straight week due to COVID causing quarantines for their originally-scheduled opponents.

3A/4A: (5) Pueblo South 35, Vista Ridge 28
In another matchup that spawned out of COVID quarantines, South held off Vista Ridge’s last-minute drive to secure the win.
The Colts’ defense, which gave up 21 points (Vista Ridge had a return score), was the difference.
“Our kids are just absolutely resilient and tough,” Pueblo South coach Ryan Goddard told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “Everything we expect out of them everything we desire out of them, that’s what they were tonight.
“It just came down to our kids made a coupe of plays, put a little pressure on the quarterback,” Goddard said. “Our secondary played lights out, our linebackers played well, and our defensive line hung in there and tried to get after a really good quarterback.”

3A: (3) Durango 27, (10) Canon City 13
Playing without two top players due to quarantines, Durango held off a very good Canon City team to finish the regular season 5-0.
“Every week has been a struggle,” Durango coach David Vogt told the Scoreboard Show. “You never know what’s going to happen week-to-week. … For our kids to rally, it just shows the kind of kids we have here.”
[divider]
1A: (6) Hotchkiss 49, Cedaredge 7
Hotchkiss won as Mordecai White had three touchdowns and 141 yards on nine carries.
The Bulldogs are 6-0.
“We’ve been building toward this,” Hotchkiss coach Curtis Hintz told the Scoreboard Show. “Last year, we were kind of there knocking on the door. … Kids left hungry. They’ve done a good job in the weight room. And, of course, with the year that it’s been with COVID, they’ve done a good job of controlling what they can control. It’s paid off during the regular season, and we’re looking forward to seeing how the bracket unfolds.”

- 4A No. 1 Dakota Ridge finished the regular season with a 51-0 win over Chatfield. The Eagles are now 6-0. “I’ve been at Dakota Ridge for 25 years — it’s probably the best team we’ve ever had,” coach Ron Woitalewicz told the Scoreboard Show. His team is in contention for the top seed in the 4A playoffs — which are expected to be deep. “This is probably as deep as I’ve seen 4A in a long time, in terms of the quality of teams out there,” Woitalewicz added. A photo gallery is available here.
- In 6-man, No. 1 Fleming beat No. 4 Granada 49-44.
- Simla, No. 9 in 8-man, beat Dolores Huerta 40-0. Coletin Mazerall rushed for 238 yards and four touchdowns.
- 5A No. 7 Fairview topped Castle View 49-36 in a back-and-forth game. Quarterback Liam O’Brien threw for 382 yards and five scores. Grant Page had a heck of a game at receiver: 13 catches, 224 yards, four touchdowns.

Up 17-7 at halftime, Holy Family really used a big second half to expand the lead en route to a top-10 win over Lutheran on Friday.
The Tigers, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A, beat No. 2 Lutheran 38-14.
“It was a great win for our kids,” Holy Family coach Michael Gabriel told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “Our kids have really looked forward to this opportunity, to play a big game, this year. And they did a great job tonight.
Holy Family’s Trevin Johnson scored two first-quarter touchdowns to put his team up 14-0 after the first quarter.
“A key for us was just trying to get them off the field. Our kids did that. … We got a quick couple of scores.
Defensively, he said, “We have great team speed on that side of the ball, and those kids really like to hit. I think we set the tone early, and kept it on for the whole game.
After a field goal, Lutheran cut the lead to 17-7 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Michael White threw two touchdowns for Holy Family, one to Oscar Sena, and another to Liam Gray, to make it 31-7.
Lutheran cut into the lead, making it 31-14 after three quarters, but White added a rushing score for Holy Family in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

2A: (10) Moffat County 26, (2) Delta 20
Caleb Frink and Evan Atkin each had two rushing touchdowns as Moffat County pulled off the big upset at home.
“We feel like we’ve been getting better every week, and this win tonight definitely makes us feel like we’ve taken a step in the right direction,” Moffat County coach Lance Scranton told the Scoreboard Show.
Frink got his team started with a first-quarter rushing score that put the Bulldogs up 6-0.
Delta responded on its next drive, capped by a touchdown pass to Hunter Goff, as they went ahead 7-6.
Moffat County retook the lead at 13-7 just before the end of the first quarter when Frink scored his second, this from from 25 yards out.
After Delta tied the game at 13 in the second quarter, Moffat County’s Evan Atkin put his team ahead 19-13 just two seconds before halftime.
In the second half, Moffat County recovered a fumble in Delta territory, and then Atkin punched it in for his second score for a 26-13 lead.
“Then, we just had to play defense, and our defense really came through,” Scranton said.
Delta’s Colbi Braslin hauled in a touchdown pass with 5:53 left, and the Panthers then got the ball back with less than a minute to go, but Moffat County’s Logan Hafey got a sack with two seconds left to secure the upset.
“That sealed the game, and that was it,” Scranton said.

“That was big for us, especially that last score, going down and getting in the end zone right before halftime,” Sedgwick County coach Chris Michel told the Scoreboard Show. “I think anytime you can do that, it takes the wind out of them a little bit, and gives us a little more cushion.”
Of the top-3 matchup, Michel said, “We had to put four quarters together. That’s exactly what we need this time of season, to get ready to go in the playoffs.”
It was the second shutout Sedgwick County’s defense threw this season.
“We did a good job of staying home, doing our job, and really tackling,” Michel said.

8-man: (9) Dove Creek 18, (5) Mancos 14
Dove Creek’s Kade Hankins scored a 6-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter to help Dove Creek rally and pull off the upset.
The Bulldogs also got a 1-yard touchdown from Chorbin Cressler and a 68-yard score from Gage Bailey as they went ahead 12-6 at halftime.
Dove Creek’s Chase Moore had two rushing touchdowns, including a score that made it 14-12 midway through the third quarter.

6-man: (3) Cheyenne Wells 42, (6) Eads 18
Rogelio Rangel had a rushing score as well as a receiving score to help Cheyenne Wells build a 21-2 first-half lead that help up in the win.
Ty Wilson had a 77-yard kick return for a score for Eads.

Notables:
- It has been a wild week of cancellations and reschedules due to COVID-19. At least 37 games have been changed or cancelled just this week alone. There was also a forfeit, which was unrelated to COVID.
- One of those rescheduled games saw coach Todd Casbier return to play his former school at Fruita Monument, with Casebier’s Castle View squad winning 28-15.
- Cheraw quarterback Cade Phillips continued his tear in 6-man, throwing for seven touchdowns in the second consecutive game as the seventh-ranked Wolverines beat Manzanola 82-38. The 14 touchdowns over two games rank fourth-all time (and are a 6-man record). He has also thrown 18 touchdowns in the past three games, which is the seventh most (and another 6-man record).
- No. 2 Fowler built a 20-8 lead in the second half, then held off a rally from No. 7 Crowley County in 8-man to win 32-22.
- Cherokee Trail knocked off 5A No. 9 Grandview 28-23 to pick up its third-straight win. The Cougars’ Kyle Williams had a late INT to seal the win. Find photos from the game here.
- In overtime, Cheyenne Mountain beat Widefield 13-12.
- In 3A, Evergreen ran away from No. 9 Green Mountain, 48-7. Photos from the game are available here.
- 1A No. 6 Hotchkiss ended Gunnison’s two-game winning streak with a 49-7 win. Five different Bulldogs had a rushing touchdown, including quarterback Drayden Taylor, who also threw for two scores.
- Quarterback Chase Silva threw two touchdown and ran for two more as 4A No. 8 Skyline improved to 5-0 with a 35-21 win over Monarch.
- 5A No. 6 Fairview is now 5-0 after its 42-10 win over Horizon. Liam O’Brien threw for 310 yards and three scores, and also had two rushing touchdowns to go along with 45 yards on the ground.
- Quite the stat line from Bennett quarterback Mikey Babi: He was 6-of-8 with 154 yards and four scores in his team’s 44-0 win over Platte Canyon in 1A.
- In 8-man, Simla got three rushing touchdowns from Coletin Mazerall as the Cubs beat Lyons 38-8.
