Football roundup: Smoky Hill wins first playoff game since 1991

Smoky Hill hill stormed through the regular season unbeaten for the second consecutive year. And now, the Buffaloes have their first playoff win since 1991.

Smoky, the No. 11 seed in the Class 5A football playoffs, beat No. 22 Overland 48-6 behind a huge day from star running back Obasanjo Sanni, who had five touchdowns.

“It was just a total team effort, all the way down to our kicker. Our defense played great,” said Smoky Hill coach Tom Thenell told the Scoreboard Show. “No. 44 (Sanni) was terrific early. The offensive line kind of knew that if 44 had a chance, some good things were going to happen.”

It is Smoky Hill’s first postseason win since they beat Denver West in the 1991 6A playoffs.

“It was a lot of fun for the school,” Thenell said. “These kids, a year ago we got respect in our own community and respect in our own hallways, and this year they were out to try to get the respect of people on the outside. I think after tonight, we have done that.”

Smoky has finished each of the past two seasons 10-0 under Tom Thenell, who is now in his second year at the school.

“People knew that when two years ago we first showed up over here, we were ranked 40th out of 40 in MaxPreps,” Thenell said. “And that’s no longer the case.”

3A: (2) Mead 27, (6) Frederick 20

In perhaps the game of the night which was a battle of unbeaten teams, Mead rallied from down 17-12 at half to get the win and secure the Northern Metro League title.

“That was the No. 1 atmosphere that I’ve ever been a part of,” Mead coach Jason Klatt told the Scoreboard Show. “Just a fun night. Two communities coming together.”

Both teams entered 9-0, and 4-0 in the Northern Metro.

The game featured three lead changes in the first half, and then Mead took a 20-17 lead in the third quarter when Brady Veltien found Brayden Keys for a touchdown on fourth down.

Frederick tied the game at 20 with a field goal, but Mead drove down and scored early in the fourth to go ahead for good.

“Just a ton of resolve a group of Mavericks, and I’m proud to be a part of it,” Klatt said.

Mead, No. 2 in the coaches poll, is likely to earn the No. 1 seed in the 3A playoffs when the brackets are unveiled on Sunday after this week’s No. 1 Palmer Ridge lost Discovery Canyon on Thursday.

“We don’t care,” Klatt said of seeding. “If they get us in the tourney, we’ll take it. We don’t care about rankings or any of that stuff. There’s a lot of good teams out there, and we’re fortunate to be a part of that mix.”

5A: (15) Arapahoe 17, (18) Castle View 7

Arapahoe avenged a loss in the regular season to advance to the second round of the 5A playoffs.

“It was much-improved from where we were earlier this season,” Arapahoe coach Rod Sherman told the Scoreboard Show. “We played them earlier, and we gave up 400-plus yards of offense, and our guys have improved. Playing in the gauntlet of the Centennial League exposes your weaknesses and gives you a chance to improve.”

Arapahoe is now 7-4, the program’s highest win total since 2015.

“I think we’ve just grown up a little bit,” said Sherman, now in his second year helming the Warriors. “Last year was our first year at Arapahoe. There was some culture change that was necessary. Our kids really bought in last year, but they needed an offseason.”

The game was a rematch of a Week 2 meeting between the teams, which Castle View won 23-13.

4A: (3) Vista PEAK 35, Fruita Monument 21

Vista PEAK rallied from down 21-15 at the half to score 20 unanswered points and finish off its first undefeated regular season in school history.

Ja’derris Carr-Kersh led the way with four rushing touchdowns, including a 71-yarder. Monty Hamrick also had rushing score for the Bison as they clinched the Pioneer League title.

“We came out and shut them out the second half, and the offense kind of got rolling,” Vista PEAK coach John Sullivan told the Scoreboard Show. “We wore them down a little bit.”

Of the rushing attack, Sullivan added: “We have a pretty good trio in the backfield with our No. 1 Ja’derris Carr, who’s really fast, and we have a couple of bruisers back there who love to block, and when they get the ball in their hands, they also can do some damage. But it all starts with our hogs up front, that took it to heart that this game was on them — both sides of the ball, actually. Our D-Line, as well.”

Vista PEAK, now 10-0, awaits seeding on Sunday.

“Last year, we started a ton of sophomores that were very talented, and we knew that if we had a great summer, and hit the weight room like we did, that we could do some damage in our league for sure,” Sullivan said. “It was one of our goals to go 10-0 and win the league, for sure, but I think we can do a little bit more, too.”

5A: (13) Highlands Ranch 59, (20) Doherty 7

Highlands Ranch cruised into the second round with a big offensive performance.

“Our kids played exceptionally well,” Highlands Ranch coach TJ Rubley told the Scoreboard Show. “It was truly one of those all-cylinder type games on offense for us.”

4A: (9) Ponderosa 26, (10) Heritage 14

Ponderosa won the Metro League title with come-from-behind win where the Mustangs went ahead late in the fourth quarter.

“Tonight was a prime example of we’re not going to quit when we get some adversity, and we’re just going to keep fighting,” coach Jaron Cohen told the Scoreboard Show.

5A: (19) Mountain Vista 24, (14) Mullen 16

Mountain Vista trailed 6-0 early, but after taking a 7-6 lead in the first quarter, didn’t trail again.

Grant Shells had an interception return for a touchdown, Jacob Barrett threw a TD to Carter Ortega, and Mountain Vista’s defense held firm to pull off the upset.

Notables:

  • In the 6-man quarterfinals, Fleming rolled to a 66-6 win over Prairie.
  • Skyline beat No. 7 Loveland 20-15 to win the 4A Longs Peak title. “It was a little too close for comfort, but they found a way and played hard,” coach Michael Silva told the Scoreboard Show.
  • Thomas Jefferson knocked off 3A No. 9 Lutheran, 27-13.
  • Erie upset 3A No. 10 Fort Morgan, 30-27. “We have talent, we have great coaches, and we were able to figure some stuff out there after a rocky start,” coach Chad Cooper told the Scoreboard Show.

Windsor top team, Holy Family’s Hailey Schalk wins at 4A girls golf championships

(Jon E. Yunt/CHSAANow.com)

WINDSOR — It is in no way ideal, but sometimes you just have to roll with the punches.

Such is the case with the fickle spring weather in Colorado.

Mother Nature threw a monkey wrench — and some snow, rain and freezing temperatures — into the girls state golf championship plans and turned what was supposed to be a two-day affair, into a single round on Monday. In Windsor at Pelican Lakes Golf Course, the host Wizards claimed their second straight Class 4A title with a Monday score of 253 (37-over par) that was 21 shots better than runner-up Niwot (274).

“We just didn’t know what was going to happen and kind of what we wanted to have happen was to be first yesterday and if we play today then we will be first today as well,” Windsor coach Kenny Anderson said. “That was our mindset going in and fortunately we were able to accommodate that yesterday.”

The foursome of Jessica Zapf (79), Kinsey Smith (85), Brynn Ellis (89) and Sarah Johnson (89) was fantastic for the Wizards all year long and it will be tough for Anderson to have to say good bye to three seniors that have brought back-to-back state title to the program.

“It’s setting in now because we are kind of in state championship mode,” said Anderson, who returns Ellis and a promising group of underclassmen next year. “The seniors won four regional titles in a row and it has been an incredible run for these girls. They are a special group and we will have fond memories and they have set the program up for the young girls behind them.”

The medalist honors went to Holy Family junior Hailey Schalk. She joins Cherry Creek’s Lynn Ann Moretto (1995-97) and Mullen’s Ashley Tait (2002, 2004-05) — now the Mustangs’ coach — as the only three-time champions since the sport was sanctioned in 1990.

She can bet she already has her sights set on making history in 2020.

“I think it would be amazing to win four and I definitely want to, and I’m definitely going to keep working hard to get there,” said Schalk, whose Day 1 score of 72 was six shots better than both Mullen freshman Sophia Choi and Vista PEAK’s Kylie Severin. “Honestley, I think I can improve everywhere as long as I keep practicing like I am and maybe even harder, then I think I can get there.”

WINDSOR — Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet or cold temperatures can keep Hailey Schalk from her appointed rounds.

The Holy Family junior, who won back-to-back titles at Class 3A in 2017 and 2018, bumped up a classification with the Tigers and hasn’t skipped a beat.

On Monday at Pelican Lakes Golf Club, in the bitterly cold temperatures and constant precipitation, Schalk was as comfortable as could be en route to her even par round of 72. It will be good enough for a five shot lead over Mullen freshman Sofia Choi and six ahead of Vista PEAK’s Kylie Severin when they play together on Tuesday morning starting at 9 a.m.

“I’ve played in it a lot, honestly, and some pretty bad conditions, so that really kind of helps me when I come out here with this,” said Schalk, whose father Matt Schalk — the head professional at Colorado National — is the Tigers coach and was with her almost every brutally cold step of the day. “When we started, it was 30 degrees and sleeting; and I though if it was going to be like that the whole time, it was going to be crazy.

“But it died down. And it really doesn’t mess with me that much.”

Clearly.

The scary thing is that Schalk left a lot out on the course. Even in the horrible conditions, she managed to hit 16 of 18 greens and just had one birdie — on the short par-4 No. 8 — to show for her efforts.

On a day when par was a fantastic score, Schalk was quick to point out the missed opportunities.

“I can think back to at least two or three easy putts that I should have made,” said Schalk, who had four straight birdie putts on Nos. 15-18 within 12 feet — including six feet on the difficult finishing hole — that burned the edge. “They were putts that weren’t asking that much either.”

Having been in the drivers seat in the past, Schalk understands how to get it done on Day Two, and that being said, her approach on Tuesday is somewhere between conservative and aggressive.

“There just weren’t too many mistakes today,” she said. “And I think if I play that way tomorrow and get a few more putts to go in, I think it’ll be a good round.”

The host Windsor Wizard’s got off to a great start in the team race, firing a cumulative 253 that is good enough for a 21 shot lead over Niwot. Four teams are bunched up rounding out the top five, Durango (289), Littleton (290) and both Evergreen and Coronado (292) will all try to stay within shouting distance of the top two teams.

Windsor coach Kenny Anderson’s foursome of Jessica Zapf (79), Kinsey Smith (85), Brynn Ellis (89) and Sarah Johnson (89) will have the home course advantage on their side, but they all know and understand that the weather is the great equalizer and that anything can happen on Tuesday.

“One thing I told them was to expect the worst, and if it is better than the worst, then you are okay. It was bad at times … but it cleared up and it really wasn’t that bad,” said Anderson, a former baseball skipper at nearby University High in Greeley. “The golf course played super long. It is about 5,800 on the scorecard, but really with the temperature and the elements, closer to 6,300, so that makes Haiely’s score even more incredible.

“Based on what we do, let’s win Day One and if something happens, don’t be behind. We won Day One, now we go win tomorrow, and if we do that, we will be in pretty good shape. The girls hung in there and yeah, it is a home course and we had some advantages with some certain things, but we battled the elements and are in good shape. We did what we needed to do today and hopefully tomorrow we do the same.”

Girls golf regionals: Vista PEAK’s Severin wins in playoff to highlight first day

2019 girls golf regionals

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — Vista PEAK’s Kylie Severin had a three-stroke lead with two holes to go at Kissing Camels Golf Course. But after a frustrating bogey, double-bogey finish she went to playoff against Coronado’s Kate Griffin to determine the winner of Class 4A Region 1.

Severin and Griffin each shot a nine-over-par-80 on the day.

Both players made par on the first playoff hole and blasted drives down the fairway of the South course’s fourth hole. Severin found the green for an eagle putt while Griffin rolled off the back. She was unable to get up and down for birdie allowing Severin to two-putt for the win, which she successfully did.

Coronado won the team title and Vista PEAK came in second meaning both teams will head to Windsor in two weeks.

Other 4A individual regional winners from Monday included Holy Family’s Hailey Schalk and Mullen’s Sofia Choi.

Golden, Durango, Windsor and Niwot all qualified teams for the state tournament.

Class 5A

Fossil Ridge’s Leigha Devine claimed a 5A regional title at Kennedy Golf Course by shooting a 74. Six players at the tournament finished within four strokes of each other.

Arapahoe won the team title with Fossil Ridge coming in second.

Defending 5A individual champion Emma Bryant won the Southern regional at Foothills Golf Course with a 74. The Northern region was won by Grandview’s Morgan Ryan.

Rock Canyon, Grandview, Cherry Creek and Highlands Ranch all qualified teams for the state tournament at Harmony Club.

Class 3A

The only word to describe Kent Denver’s Charlotte Hillary’s round at regionals is dominant. Hillary shot shot a 64 to win 3A Region 2 by a staggering 16 strokes on Monday.

She finished third at last year’s 3A state tournament, falling short of Holy Family’s Hailey Schalk (who is playing in 4A this year) and Colorado Academy’s Caroline Jordaan.

The Sun Devils also came away with the team title as Northfield came in second. Both teams will head to the 3A tournament at Eagle Ranch.

Jefferson Academy’s Aubri Braecklein won Region 3. She made par on three of her last four holes to end the day with a 78.

The Jaguars won the team title with Resurrection Christian coming in second.

Regional play for all golf classes will conclude on Tuesday.

Pitching and defense have Vista PEAK baseball on a winning streak

If good pitching is contagious, every arm at Vista PEAK is fully infected.
