Football roundup: Fountain-Fort Carson takes rematch vs. Rampart

(@FFCHSAthletics/Twitter)

A week after losing to Rampart, Fountain-Fort Carson got revenge with a 33-17 win on Friday night.

The eighth-ranked Trojans took a 13-10 lead just before halftime, then pushed the lead to 19-10 in the third quarter.

Rampart cut it to 19-17 midway through the third, but Fountain-Fort Carson responded to go up 26-17 on a touchdown pass from Tavian Tuli to Joshua Williams, and then scored again in the fourth quarter after to make it 33-17.

FFC finishes the regular season at 5-1, while Rampart is now 4-2.

The two teams matched up for a second-straight week due to COVID causing quarantines for their originally-scheduled opponents.

3A/4A: (5) Pueblo South 35, Vista Ridge 28

In another matchup that spawned out of COVID quarantines, South held off Vista Ridge’s last-minute drive to secure the win.

The Colts’ defense, which gave up 21 points (Vista Ridge had a return score), was the difference.

“Our kids are just absolutely resilient and tough,” Pueblo South coach Ryan Goddard told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “Everything we expect out of them everything we desire out of them, that’s what they were tonight.

“It just came down to our kids made a coupe of plays, put a little pressure on the quarterback,” Goddard said. “Our secondary played lights out, our linebackers played well, and our defensive line hung in there and tried to get after a really good quarterback.”

3A: (3) Durango 27, (10) Canon City 13

Playing without two top players due to quarantines, Durango held off a very good Canon City team to finish the regular season 5-0.

“Every week has been a struggle,” Durango coach David Vogt told the Scoreboard Show. “You never know what’s going to happen week-to-week. … For our kids to rally, it just shows the kind of kids we have here.”

1A: (6) Hotchkiss 49, Cedaredge 7

Hotchkiss won as Mordecai White had three touchdowns and 141 yards on nine carries.

The Bulldogs are 6-0.

“We’ve been building toward this,” Hotchkiss coach Curtis Hintz told the Scoreboard Show. “Last year, we were kind of there knocking on the door. … Kids left hungry. They’ve done a good job in the weight room. And, of course, with the year that it’s been with COVID, they’ve done a good job of controlling what they can control. It’s paid off during the regular season, and we’re looking forward to seeing how the bracket unfolds.”

  • 4A No. 1 Dakota Ridge finished the regular season with a 51-0 win over Chatfield. The Eagles are now 6-0. “I’ve been at Dakota Ridge for 25 years — it’s probably the best team we’ve ever had,” coach Ron Woitalewicz told the Scoreboard Show. His team is in contention for the top seed in the 4A playoffs — which are expected to be deep. “This is probably as deep as I’ve seen 4A in a long time, in terms of the quality of teams out there,” Woitalewicz added. A photo gallery is available here.
  • In 6-man, No. 1 Fleming beat No. 4 Granada 49-44.
  • Simla, No. 9 in 8-man, beat Dolores Huerta 40-0. Coletin Mazerall rushed for 238 yards and four touchdowns.
  • 5A No. 7 Fairview topped Castle View 49-36 in a back-and-forth game. Quarterback Liam O’Brien threw for 382 yards and five scores. Grant Page had a heck of a game at receiver: 13 catches, 224 yards, four touchdowns.

Energized No. 9 Fountain-Fort Carson football knocks down Vista Ridge

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — Finally healthy and feeling at home in Class 4A, Fountain-Fort Carson football looks like the real deal.

From the time Q. Jones took his first touch 50 yards for a touchdown to fending off an attempted Vista Ridge comeback late in the first half to beat the Wolves 61-28, the Trojans look the best they have in years.

This is something head coach Jake Novotny can get used to.

“Our ceiling is as high as we want it to be,” Novotny said. “If we continue to practice like we’ve been practicing and believing like we’ve been believing, anything’s possible. Our culture has turned a corner from these last five years and I’m proud of these kids.”

Speaking of turning corners, Jones turned plenty of them as he got around defenders and ended with a monster day. He carried the ball 29 times for 309 yards and five touchdowns.

He missed most of last season with lingering issues from a leg injury suffered during his sophomore year, but he plans on taking advantage of every second he’s able to get on the field and show why he’s one of the elite running backs in the entire state.

“Every game is the game I’ve been waiting for,” Jones said. “It’s just a blessing to be out here and playing again. It feels good.”

He carried the ball just eight times a week ago and through eight carries on Friday he had totaled 111 yards and two scores that had the Class 4A No. 9 Trojans (2-0 overall, 1-0 4A Southern League) up 14-0.

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

The challenge with Vista Ridge (1-1, 0-1) was sophomore quarterback Brayden Dorman. With an arm like his, the Wolves can explode at any moment meaning no lead in the game was safe. Dorman showed that when he found Keyon Burris for a 33-yard touchdown pass then Kyshawn Bridges for a 20-yard touchdown pass to cut the FFC lead to 27-14 before halftime.

“Sixteen is a good player,” Novotny said. “We knew (the Vista Ridge offense) would go through him and our kids rose to the challenge.”

The key for the Trojans was making Dorman uncomfortable early. Curtis Jackson and TaShon Smith picked Dorman off well before he threw his first touchdown pass. Jackson got a second pick in the second half and Tai Faavae added one as well to go with a touchdown run of his own in the third quarter.

“We knew that Brayden was going to be one of the top guys we play this year,” Faavae said. “Especially since he’s real well-known in Colorado. The whole week we were just focusing on getting pressure on him. We know they’re a passing school and all their receivers are solid.”

As much hype that can be made over Jones’ 300-plus yard performance, perhaps equally impressive was the Trojans holding a Dorman-led offense to just 28 points.

“We’re well-rounded,” Novotny pointed out.

And for the first time as head coach of the program, his team is 2-0 to start the season. And the boys on the roster have to intention of letting up.

“We’re going to keep striving for greatness,” Jones said. “We want to win week by week and just keep going. We’re chasing a state title just like everyone else is.”

Familiarity helps Pueblo Centennial softball overpower Vista Ridge

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

PUEBLO — With just a few days of official practice to go on, Pueblo Centennial softball coach Erica Ortiz liked what she safrom her Bulldogs in Thursday’s season opener.

Timely hits, consistent pitching and steady defense led Centennial to a 7-0 win over Vista Ridge, beginning a season that Ortiz hopes will end with her experienced squad claiming a South-Central League championship.

“This is the team I’ve had for three years now,” Ortiz said. “Thy were all freshmen and sophomores and now they’re juniors and seniors. Everybody is a leader on this team and it feels good to have those upperclassmen.”

The fields at the Runyon complex in Pueblo were lit up across the board as various youth baseball games scramble to finish a shortened summer season. But it was the field furthest to the east that marked the first sanctioned high school athletic competition in Pueblo since the end of the spring season.

And for the first couple of innings, it felt like each team was trying to settle in and get over the nerves of finally getting the chance to take the field with their friends and represent their schools and communities.

“I was a little nervous,” Centennial pitcher Lilly Espinoza said. “I knew we had strong infield and outfield so I started to get a little confident as the game went on.”

With good reason. Espinoza tossed a complete game shutout in just 61 pitches, allowing just five hits. She got her run support in the bottom of the third when back to back triples from Kieya Belmont and Yzavel Barela resulted in Belomt crossing home for the first run of the game and the season for the Bulldogs (1-0 overall).

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Barela would later score on a ground ball to short from Espinoza. In all, Barela went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple while scoring three runs. The Wolves (0-1) certainly had their chances. Alisha Salazar went 1-for-3 with a triple but reached base twice. Tatjana Harris also ripped a triple while pitching all six innings. She surrendered just two earned runs, but overall the night belonged to the Bulldogs.

“It felt really good, honestly,” Barela said. “I haven’t been so good myself lately, but it felt really good to bring all these girls together.”

It’s a great confidence builder when looking around the league landscape. Three teams from the league qualified for the Class 4A softball tournament a year ago.

Two of those teams in Pueblo South and Pueblo County cracked the preseason softball rankings and while the Bulldogs are currently outside of the top 10, they were receiving votes along with rival Pueblo Central. But they don’t want to just end up in the same conversation as the other teams in Pueblo, they want to stand apart from everyone and get their chance to shine at the state tournament.

“That’s the expectation,” Ortiz said. “We’ve been right on that bubble for regionals the last two years. We had younger kids and we graduated zero kids last year. The league graduated quite a few dominant players. This is the year that I feel confident, especially if we play like that.”

Friday Night Lights in April: Schools light their stadiums for students

The Be The Light, Colorado movement continued to spread through the end of its first week with an inspirational display of Friday Night Lights in April.

The #BeTheLightCO trend, which started with five schools and districts on Monday night, and continued with 12 more on Tuesday, and 16 on Wednesday, has now spread across nearly 70 schools and school districts around the state.

The movement seeks to provide a beacon of hope for students during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has closed schools and put the season on hold. Schools and school districts are lighting their stadiums as a way to show students they are in our hearts and on our minds.

Among those taking part since Wednesday:

Jefferson Academy:

All-state football teams for the 2019 season

The 2019 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.
