  • Girls basketball rankings: Three new No. 1 teams atop polls

    The CHSAANow.com girls basketball polls saw three new No. 1 teams crowned this week, including Highlands Ranch, who takes over the No. 1 spot in Class 5A.

    It is the biggest shift at the top of the polls since the start of basketball season.

    The big story of the week came as ThunderRidge fell to Cherry Creek, 32-27. The Grizzlies had held the top spot in 5A since the preseason poll. But the Bruins couldn’t capitalize on the win. They turned around and lost their next game to Broomfield, which kept them firmly in the No. 7 spot this week.

    Poudre and Loveland were the two new teams added to the 5A rankings as they come in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

    Sand Creek was one of two teams to hold on the top this week, as they remain No. 1 in the 4A poll. Mesa Ridge jumped from No. 3 to No. 2, continuing their climb and showing that they intend to be a force this year, much like they were in 2014 when they won the 4A title.

    Joining the 4A rankings this week is Pueblo East, who comes in at No. 10. The Eagles started the season at 1-2, but have played well enough lately to earn the votes needed to crack the top 10.

    Pagosa Springs takes the top spot in the 3A rankings away from Manitou Springs, despite the Mustangs starting 4-0.

    In fact, the Mustangs received six first-place votes last week, only to get two this week. Manitou falls to No. 3 in this week’s poll.

    Lamar made a two-spot jump this week to come in at No. 7 and Grand Valley comes in at No. 10 as the lone newcomer to the 3A rankings.

    Yuma remains firmly at the top of the 2A rankings and had a nice showing last week, going 3-0. The big jump in that class was Wray leaping from No. 9 to No. 5. They got the attention of the voters by taking Yuma to the limit and only falling to the Indians 69-66. Highland and Sanford break in as the two newcomers to the 2A polls, landing at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

    With Idalia’s 48-43 loss to Otis, the Wolves fell out of the top spot in the 1A rankings. That helped Otis break into the top 10 where they come in at No. 7 this week. Kim at No. 8 and Briggsdale at No. 10 also joined this week’s rankings.

    Sangre de Cristo takes to the top spot this week, jumping from No. 3 to No. 1.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • ThunderRidge takes over as No. 1 in 5A boys basketball rankings

    ThunderRidge took down No. 1 Regis Jesuit last week, and took over the top spot in the Class 5A boys basketball poll this week.

    The Grizzlies received 21 of the 22 first-place votes and amassed 219 total points in rising to the top of CHSAANow.com’s ranking. They beat Regis Jesuit 59-36 on Tuesday.

    Regis dropped to No. 2. Behind them, Overand (No. 3) and Eaglecrest (No. 4) held steady while Rock Canyon moved up to No. 5.

    Rangeview jumped up four places to No. 6, Dakota Ridge fell to No. 7 and two newcomers were next — eighth-ranked Mountain Vista and No. 9 Cherokee Trail. Chaparral rounds out the 5A ranking.

    There was little change to 4A, where Longmont continued to be a unanimous No. 1 selection.

    In 3A, Grand Valley joined at No. 9. Faith Christian remained atop that poll.

    Likewise, the No. 1 teams in 2A (Resurrection Christian) and 1A (Sangre de Cristo) also stayed the same.

  • Lutheran now No. 1 in 3A boys basketball rankings

    For the second straight week, there’s a new team atop the Class 3A boys basketball rankings.

    Lutheran knocked off Faith Christian, last week’s No. 1, with a 65-55 win on Saturday. Monday, the Lions received eight of the 14 first-place votes and totaled 128 points in taking over atop that poll.

    Faith Christian dropped to second, just ahead of Colorado Springs Christian, which occupied the top spot prior to Faith. Colorado Academy, the preseason No. 1 team in 3A, is fourth this week and Jefferson Academy rounds out the top five.

    With Lutheran, Faith, CA and Jefferson Academy all hailing from the 3A Metro, it means that league currently has four of the top five teams in 3A. No. 8 Kent Denver gives the league five ranked teams.

    In 5A, Regis Jesuit remained a unanimous No. 1 pick. ThunderRidge (No. 2) and Eaglecrest (No. 3) continued to follow the raiders.

    Overland bumped up one spot to No. 4, and Rock Canyon moved up to No. 5.

    Chaparral also moved up, to No. 6, while Dakota Ridge fell to No. 7 following its first loss.

    Denver East is up to No. 8, Fossil Ridge is now No. 9 and Monarch joined the poll at No. 10.

    The 4A poll continued to be led by Longmont. That ranking added No. 8 D’Evelyn and No. 10 Lewis-Palmer this week.

    Resurrection Christian (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A) held firm atop their respective polls.

  • Faith Christian (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) new No. 1s in boys basketball

    Faith Christian has taken over as the new No. 1 team in the Class 3A boys basketball rankings, while Resurrection Christian is now atop the 2A poll.

    Faith (12-1) received 11 of the 14 first-place votes in 3A to leap over former No. 1 Colorado Springs Christian in the CHSAANow.com poll. The Eagles totalled 128 points to CSCS’s 124. CSCS is No. 2 this week.

    The 3A poll added No. 8 St. Mary’s, which knocked off Colorado Springs Christian last week, and No. 10 Moffat County.

    Resurrection Christian (12-0) got seven of the 10 first-place votes in 2A to jump Sanford. Voters were apparently impressed by the way the Cougars handled then-No. 3 Highland on Friday, moving them up over Sanford, which is also unbeaten (11-0).

    2A added Yuma at No. 9 this week.

    The other No. 1 teams stayed put: Regis Jesuit (5A), Longmont (4A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A).

    The 5A ranking added Fossil Ridge at No. 10, Denver South joined 4A at No. 9, and 1A added Sierra Grande (No. 9).

  • Rampart joins 5A girls basketball poll at No. 10

    Rampart has joined this week’s Class 5A girls basketball rankings this week.

    The Rams (11-4) are riding a five-game winning streak. They are ranked No. 10 by CHSAANow.com’s panel of voters.

    Elsewhere in 5A, ThunderRidge continued to lead the poll, and got 15 of the 16 first-place votes. Broomfield remained at No. 2, while Grandview moved up one place to No. 3. Monarch also moved up one spot to No. 4.

    Monarch rounds up 5A’s top 5 teams.

    Each of the four other No. 1 teams also remained the same. Those are Valor Christian (4A), Sterling (3A), Peyton (2A) and Kit Carson (1A).

  • Resurrection Christian boys basketball handles Highland

    LOVELAND — Bruce Dick has been around the block.

    The boys basketball coach has won over 500 games in three coaching stints at Green Mountain (where he claimed a state title), Rocky Mountain, and now at Resurrection Christian in Loveland. He’s had success at the big school level.

    On Friday at Rez, the Class 2A No. 2-ranked Cougars (12-0 overall) played like a 5A power in dismantling No. 3 Highland (12-1) 93-47 in a showdown between two undefeated teams.

    “This is a team that would compete with so many of my past teams from Green Mountain and Rocky Mountain,” Dick said. “This is a good bunch of basketball players and great kids. I’m very thankful to be able to coach them.”

    RCS, in front a raucous crowd, gave their fans much to be grateful for at both ends of the court.

    After a closely contested 17-12 first quarter lead, the Cougars preyed on Highland’s offense in forcing 31 total turnovers, 17 of which came in the first half. Rez led 41-24 at the break.

    “They played with great composure early and then just extended it and got on fire,” Dick raved. “Our defense is what got us on fire. Our defense is what really turned the game.”

    A team averaging an all-classification best 85.5 points per game entering Friday, the Cougars unleashed perhaps their best weapon in the third.

    Sophomore guard Tanner Ervin, a five-foot-seven dynamo and the team’s leading scorer, attempted nine three-pointers in the quarter. Five found net during a wild 17 point individual outburst. Resurrection Christian laid down a 31-9 licking of a quarter to lead 72-33 headed into the final frame.

    Ervin was quick to credit his teammates for his blistering third.

    “It goes back to unselfishness,” the sophomore said. “Everyone can get to the basket and that’s huge. We execute, get to the basket, draw the defense, and then I was just spotting up. My teammates were doing the rest.”

    Ervin, who averages 19.4 points per game, finished with seven three-pointers on 16 attempts, buried seven of eight free throws, and scored 30 points, a new career high.

    The sophomore’s shooting barrage put the crowd in a frenzy, but he wasn’t alone in the scoring department as teammates Luke Fick (14), Michael Stevenson (13), Kyle Lahr (11), Koby Bishop (10), and Luke Mondt (10) all contributed. Fick made seven of eight shots for a team that cashed 54 percent of their field goals.

    “We have a lot of balance and they really like each other,” Dick said of his explosive offense. “They don’t care who scores. We have certain guys who will score a lot. One of our biggest faults in some games is that we’ve over passed even. They hang around each other, they like each other, and they’ve set some goals to try and achieve together.”

    The Resurrection Christian defense held the Huskies to 37 percent shooting and limited Kadyn Hicks, 2A’s scoring leader at a clip of 26.2 per outing entering Friday, to 14 points.

    Rez, 5-0 in the Mile High League and a team whose closest win this season was by 20 points over The Dawson School on January 13, appear poised for a run at the 2A crown, even if their coach avoids discussing it.

    “We don’t talk about winning,” Dick noted. “We just talk about doing the right things, playing the right way, and if we take care of ourselves on and off the floor, good things will happen.”

    “There’s a lot of good teams,” Ervin added.
