AURORA — Fossil Ridge, Frederick and Strasburg earned the top overall seeds in their respective classifications when the regional softball brackets were released by CHSAA on Sunday.

Fossil Ridge, 17-1-0, won the always-tough Front Range League in Class 5A by virtue of going unbeaten 11-0. 5A’s No. 2 seed, Legacy (15-4-0), also hails from the Front Range League. Both will host their respective regionals.

Legacy is the defending 5A champion.

No. 3-seeded Dakota Ridge, No. 4 Brighton, No. 5 Castle View, No. 6 Legend, No. 7 Grandview and No. 8 Broomfield will also host regionals.

In 4A, Frederick was a clear-cut No. 1 seed. The Warriors finished the season unbeaten at 19-0-0, won the Tri-Valley League, and played a very tough schedule which included top teams from 4A and 3A, as well as 5A opponents.

Valor Christian (18-1-0) got the No. 2 seed, while Pueblo West is No. 3. Defending champion Wheat Ridge is the No. 4.

Other regional hosts in 4A are No. 5 Silver Creek, No. 6 Vista Ridge, No. 7 Discovery Canyon and No. 8 Mountain View.

The full 4A regional brackets are available here.

3A’s top-seeded Strasburg (also the defending 3A champion) went unbeaten at 19-0-0 despite playing in District 3, which is arguably the toughest softball league in the state.

That district also features No. 2-seeded Valley — which will also host a region — No. 4 Sterling and No. 5 Eaton. Additionally, Brush (No. 10), Lyons (No. 13) and Greeley Central (No. 18) also qualified for the regional bracket.

Other regional hosts in 3A include No. 3 La Junta, No. 7 Skyline, No. 8 Burlington and No. 9 Cedaredge.

Full brackets for the 3A regionals are here.

Each of the regional tournaments will begin and complete play next Saturday, Oct. 11. Both the Class 5A and 4A tournaments feature 32-team fields split into eight regions, while 3A has 18 teams split into six.

All three regional tournaments will advance two teams from each region to their respective state tournaments Oct. 17-18 at Aurora Sports Park.

Grandview is No. 2 in this week’s 5A volleyball rankings. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Grandview, a winner last week over then-No. 2 Eaglecrest, has made a big jump in CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A volleyball poll this week.

The Wolves moved from No. 5 to No. 2 following the sweep of Eaglecrest, and another of Arapahoe.

Meanwhile, Castle View joined the 5A ranking at No. 10 following a win over No. 3 Chaparral. Chaparral remained at No. 3, just behind consistent No. 1 Rampart and Grandview.

Rampart remained at No. 1 despite its loss to 4A No. 1 Lewis-Palmer, which owns the claim to the best team in the state at the moment.

Each of the three other No. 1 teams also stayed put. Those are Eaton, Resurrection Christian and Fleming.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Chaparral, Regis Jesuit among newcomers to volleyball rankings

    Chaparral Dakota Ridge volleyball
Chaparral is No. 5 in this week’s 5A volleyball poll. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Chaparral and Regis Jesuit both joined this week’s CHSAANow.com volleyball ranking in Class 5A.

Both teams were unranked in the preseason. Chaparral joined the poll at No. 5 after going 4-1 over the first two weeks of the season. Regis Jesuit, meanwhile, is No. 10 after going 3-2.

Rampart remained atop the 5A ranking. In fact, the only No. 1 team to change this week was in 3A, where Eaton takes over for Manitou Springs. Lewis Palmer (4A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Fleming (1A) all held firm in their respective top spots.

Mullen (No. 9) was the lone newcomer in 4A, while Gunnison (No. 10) joined 3A. The 2A poll added Swink (No. 6) and Hoehne (No. 9). Cheraw joined 1A at No. 10.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, polls will be released each Monday.

  • Running runs in the family for Lyons’ Paul Roberts

Lyons junior Paul Roberts performance last year at the Class 2A cross country meet should have come to the surprise of no one.

Running to the Roberts family is first nature.

“I’ve ran since I was 2,” Paul said. “I remember running a Turkey Trot. Then a mile in or 20 minutes. The thing in the family is to go out and run. We were home schooled so it was our PE. I was always interested in it a little. Then I can remember being 7 or 8 and liking it a lot. I started racing  my older sister in lots of races. Then all I wanted to do was beat her.”

Paul, and the rest of the Roberts clan, have certainly shown that they are a running family.

Paul won the boys Class 2A meet last year, setting a course record last at the Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs, finishing in 16 minutes, 19 seconds.

Paul’s sister, Miriam, won the girls meet.

“We’ve been blessed with great kids,” said Mark, the Roberts’ father and Lyons head cross country coach. “I feel like it’s a culture of kids that want to get better, and just enjoy hanging out with each other. It’s helped out with my own children getting involved with that.”

Paul’s 2014 season is setting up to be even better. The Class 2A field returns a stable of top runners, including Roberts’ teammate Joel Such and Telluride’s Jack Plantz. Returning all-stater Ben Butler from SkyView Academy will move up to Class 3A.

With Paul competing with Such on a nightly basis in practice, though, Lyons looks poised to again be the team to beat.

For Paul, a return to the state championships and a sub 16-minute time are definitely goals, but the junior’s eyes are on the Nike Cross Regional. After struggling and failing to qualify for the national Nike meet, Paul said his focus is on that.

But the state championships are a big part of that training.

With the state championships taking part on the same course, and with Mark’s knowledge of racing, Paul understands he’s got a big bull’s-eye on his back.

“I remember what it’s like,” Paul said. “I know how to run it. We know it’s going to work out and set up well for us this year.”

  • Rampart tops preseason 5A volleyball ranking

    State volleyball
Lewis-Palmer, the defending 4A volleyball champion, heads the preseason ranking in that class. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Rampart, Lewis-Palmer, Manitou Springs, Resurrection Christian and Fleming are the preseason No. 1 volleyball teams in their respective classifications.

CHSAANow.com’s preseason poll was released on Monday, and three of last year’s champions are atop the rankings. Those are Lewis-Palmer, Resurrection Christian and Fleming.

Rampart, which received eight of the 11 first-place votes, heads the Class 5A poll. The Rams made the state tournament last season, where they went 1-1 in pool play. They return a number of top players from that team.

Cherokee Trail is No. 2 to start the year, and is followed by No. 3 Fossil Ridge, No. 4 Grandview — the defending champion — and No. 5 Cherry Creek.

Pine Creek is sixth, Eaglecrest is seventh, Legend is eighth, Arapahoe is ninth and Mountain Vista rounds out the ranking.

Lewis-Palmer heads 4A. Ponderosa is No. 2, and Air Academy, last year’s runner-up, is third.

Manitou Springs is on top of the 3A ranking, just ahead of defending champ Eaton. Manitou was runner-up last season.

Resurrection Christian leads 2A, while Fleming is on top of 1A.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, polls will be released each Monday.
