  • Volleyball rankings: Chatfield takes over No. 1 spot in 5A

For the second-straight week, there is a new team on top of the Class 5A volleyball rankings. Chatfield has taken over.

The Chargers, now 8-0, went 2-0 last week with wins at Rocky Mountain and Green Mountain.

Legend took over the top spot last week, then was swept by Lewis-Palmer, the top team in 4A, last week.

With the loss to the Rangers, the Titans fell to No. 2 this week. Legend and Cherokee Trail each only fell one spot to second and third, respectively. The biggest jump in 5A came from Brighton. The Bulldogs went from unranked to No. 10, and have now raised to sixth.

Newcomers to the 5A include Lakewood at ninth and Columbine at No. 10.

The top five teams in 4A went unchanged and the overall poll itself remains relatively unscathed from last week. It did welcome two new teams in Berthoud at ninth and Holy Family at No. 10.

St. Mary’s joins the 3A poll at ninth, thanks in part to a big win over Manitou Springs at the Bishop Machebeuf Tournament over the weekend. The Mustangs dropped to fifth as result to the loss against the Pirates, as well as a loss to Resurrection Christian. Defending champion Eaton remained the top team in 3A.

Resurrection Christian continues to cruise this season and was a unanimous pick as the top team in 2A. They the only No. 1 team this week to receive every first place vote. The bottom of the 2A poll looks vastly different this week with the addition of the Colorado Springs School (eighth), West Grand (ninth) and Swink (No. 10).

Idalia hangs on to their place atop the 1A rankings after an impressive 4-0 week. They’re joined in the top 10 by Nucla and Briggsdale.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

Despite the top teams remaining the same in the Class 5A, 4A and 3A CHSAANow.com soccer polls, there was plenty of changes from last week.

Of the four new teams who joined the 5A rankings, two of them fell out of the polls just last week. Arvada West (No. 7) and Pine Creek (No. 9) rejoin the top 10 after playing their way out of last week’s rankings. They’re joined by Legacy (No. 8) and Rocky Mountain (No. 10), who make their first appearance in the polls this season.

ThunderRidge also made a significant jump this season, going from No. 9 to No. 6 after going 2-0 last week.

Broomfield remained No. 1 in 5A.

The 10 teams from last week’s 4A polls remained the same, but Valor Christian did jump from No. 8 to No. 4. Cheyenne Mountain continued to lead the 4A ranking.

Pagosa Springs, which was unranked in the preseason, has made the jump to No. 3 in 3A this week. Salida climbs back into the polls at No. 5 after falling out of the top 10 last week. Aurora West lands at No. 8 as the other newcomer in 3A.

Kent Denver stayed on top of the 3A poll.

  • Legend takes over as No. 1 in 5A volleyball rankings

Legend volleyball, No. 8 in the Class 5A preseason poll, has risen to the No. 1 spot after the first full week of action.

The Titans, now 5-0, beat former No. 1 Cherokee Trail, then-No. 4 Regis Jesuit and Air Academy, at the time ranked No. 9 in 4A, in the past week.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier. Legend has a date with 4A No. 1 Lewis-Palmer on Thursday.

There was much more shakeup to the 5A poll, which is conducted by CHSAANow.com. Cherokee Trail remained very high, at No. 2, but there was a lot of change behind the Cougars.

Chatfield moved up two spots to No. 3, Rock Canyon rocketed from unranked to No. 4, and Regis Jesuit moved into the top five.

Cherry Creek is No. 6, Grandview is No. 7, and then three newcomers round out the ranking: No. 8 Castle View, No. 9 Mountain Vista and No. 10 Brighton.

In the 4A ranking, Lewis-Palmer retained its grip on the top spot. That poll added No. 7 Longmont and No. 9 Windsor. Montrose also made a big jump in going from No. 7 to No. 4.

The other No. 1 teams also stayed put: Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Idalia (1A).

Other new teams this week include Faith Christian (No. 10 in 3A), Rye (No. 8 in 2A) and the following in 1A: Sangre de Cristo (No. 8), La Veta (No. 9) and Norwood (No. 10).

  • Boys soccer rankings: Cheyenne Mountain new No. 1 in 4A

Cheyenne Mountain boys soccer opened the season with a big win last week, and finds itself ranked No. 1 in Class 4A this week.

Cheyenne Mountain beat then-No. 2 The Classical Academy 3-2 in a season opener. Coupled with former No. 1 Air Academy’s loss to Evergreen, Cheyenne Mountain took over.

Evergreen, No. 8 in the preseason, moved up to No. 2 in the 4A poll, which is conducted by CHSAANow.com. The Classical Academy is No. 3, and Littleton made a big jump from No. 7 to No. 4.

Denver West, unranked in the preseason, is No. 5.

Niwot held steady at No. 6, Air Academy dropped to No. 7 and newcomer Valor Christian is No. 8. Ponderosa is No. 9 and another newcomer, Greeley West, rounds out the ranking.

Things were pretty crazy in the 5A ranking, which added six new teams. Yes, the Nos. 1 and 2 teams — Broomfield and Boulder — held their respective spots, but that was just about it.

    (Aislyn Carrillo/CHSAANow.com)
Fort Collins was one of six new teams to the 5A poll, checking in at No. 3. (Aislyn Carrillo/CHSAANow.com)

Joining the ranking were No. 3 Fort Collins, No. 5 Rangeview, No. 7 George Washington, No. 8 Denver East, No. 9 ThunderRidge and No. 10 Far Northeast (formerly Montbello). Fairview (No. 4) and Cherry Creek (No. 6) were the other holdovers from the preseason.

The 3A poll also had similar shakeup. Four new teams joined: No. 4 KIPP, No. 8 Pagosa Springs, No. 9 Colorado Springs Christian and No. 10 Denver Science & Tech Stapleton.

Kent Denver retained the No. 1 spot in that poll.

  • Three teams favored to three-peat in preseason volleyball rankings

Last fall, for the first time in state history, every single volleyball champion successfully defended its title. Three of them are favored to win a third consecutive championship heading into the 2015 season.

Defending champions Lewis-Palmer (Class 4A), Eaton (3A) and Resurrection Christian (2A) are among top-ranked teams in the CHSAANow.com Volleyball Polls, which were released Monday. Also heading their respective classifications are Cherokee Trail (5A) and Idalia (1A).

The last team to win more than two straight titles was Cheyenne Mountain, which won five from 2008-12.

Lewis-Palmer is actually coming off a mythical national championship in addition to its two 4A titles. The Rangers got eight of the 11 first-place votes in 4A’s preseason poll. Ponderosa, the team they beat for the 2014 title, is No. 2.

Eaton, the defending 3A champion, holds the top spot in that poll after getting eight of the 10 first-place votes in that class. Colorado Springs Christian opens at No. 2.

In 2A, Resurrection Christian — yes, another defending champion — got six of the seven first-place votes to top the preseason poll. The Cougars have actually won 58-straight matches, which ranks fifth-best all-time. Yuma is No. 2.

Cherokee Trail opens as the favorite in 5A. The Cougars got six of the 11 first-place votes. Grandview, last season’s champion, is No. 2 and got one first-place vote.

Cherry Creek is No. 3, and Regis Jesuit is No. 4. Chatfield, the 2014 runner-up, is No. 5. The Charges received two first-place votes.

Two teams — Fossil Ridge and Brighton — received first-place votes, but did not make the 5A ranking.

The 1A poll is led by Idalia, which got all six first-place votes. Flagler is No. 2.

Fleming won last season’s 1A title, and has won 47 consecutive matches. The Wildcats open at No. 9.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

The 2015 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues and coaches, and then a vote of coaches. Players had to be first-team all-league in order to be on the all-state ballot.

Players and coaches of the year were also selected by a vote of the coaches.

The 2014-15 all-state girls basketball teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a week-long vote of coaches.

A specific player of the year vote was held in each class, as was a vote for coach of the year.

GOLDEN – This wasn’t just about capping off an undefeated season with the program’s first-ever state championship.

For the Pagosa Springs girls basketball team, Saturday evening’s crowning moment was – in the words of one individual – vindication.

One year after falling in the Class 3A state championship game, the Pirates returned to Lockridge Arena and finished off what they started last winter. Pagosa Springs broke open a close game in the final two minutes of play on its way to a 39-36 victory over Sterling to claim the 3A crown.

“It feels absolutely amazing. I’ve been to the state tournament every year since I can remember with my Dad,” Pirates senior Shannel Wilson said. “Seeing those other teams go win the state tournament and have these great games, it’s an indescribable feeling. Winning the state tournament, a perfect season with people doubting us, it just felt great.”

Pagosa Springs (26-0) rebounded nicely from its offensive struggles through the first three quarters. The Pirates had only 19 points headed into the fourth, but poured in 20 points in the final quarter alone.

Taylor Lee Hammer led the way with 15 points, all of which came in the second half. She hit two big 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter and added two key layups in the final two minutes of play.

“We freed her up a little bit and we got her open,” Pagosa Springs coach Wes Lewis said. “She’s a great shooter, and shot the ball with confidence. Big players make big-time plays in big games.”

A first half that was sloppy at times ended with a 10-10 tie and a combined 17 turnovers. Sterling’s Jenna Knudson and Kylie Chavez opened the second half with a quick 6-0 run, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Madison Lewis and Hammer tied it back up.

Even after Hammer’s consecutive treys to open the fourth, the Tigers (26-1) surged back to take a 28-27 lead with 2:32 remaining on a Chavez bucket. But Wilson knocked down a 3-pointer for Pagosa Springs and Hammer picked off a pass and went the length of the court for a layup to make it 32-28.

“We’ve always believed that if we want to be a good team we have to dig down and dig through all those holes we’re put in,” Wilson said. “That’s exactly what we did. We’ve been preparing for this game all season. We dug down, came out of it and got on a roll there.”

Pagosa Springs’ boys team captured the 3A state championship in 2013, a feat their counterparts on the girls side had been trying hard to match.

“Last year, it was absolutely horrible. We all broke down crying because we thought we had it,” Hammer said. “This year it’s just bubbling over with joy.”

Lewis said the championship wasn’t just about the girls celebrating in the locker room Saturday night.

“It’s hard to put into words right now. We’ve worked so hard for this, this is our eighth year with the program on the girls side,” Lewis said. “I want to give a lot of

credit to the girls who came before these that kind of helped build our tradition and our program. We have a ton of them out there tonight that came up here to support us.”

Payton Shahan and Lewis scored eight points each for the Pirates. Knudson led Sterling with 16 points and Chavez added eight.

The Tigers graduate four seniors off a team that went to the semifinals a year ago before making the title game this season. Two of them started Saturday – Kenzie Chrisman and Maggie Adney.
