  • Addition of 2A evens playing field, encourages growth in girls soccer

Girls soccer added a fourth classification this season — Class 2A. The addition has been met with enthusiasm for how it levels the playing field, but also for how it encourages growth of the sport in smaller schools. (Kai Casey/CHSAANow.com)

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n 1991, after 13 seasons of one classification for girls soccer in this state, a three-division system was introduced to bring more competitive balance to the sport.

The thinking is the same this season. For the first time in the sport’s history, CHSAA has added 2A.

The inclusion of another class has been met with resounding approval by several coaches around the growing state.

“The thing I like about it is that it’s difficult for small schools to ultimately compete at a 3A level when a lot of 2A schools are 100-to-150 kids and 3A goes up to 600,” Denver Christian coach Brad Homan said.

“There gets to be a point where you can’t compete and sometimes it’s even to the point where small schools have to put athletes onto the field that it’s physically a bit dangerous for them to be there.”

Programs like Denver Christian, the current No. 1 team in CHSAANow.com’s 2A poll and a program that has reached the soccer finals eight times and won three titles, No. 3 Front Range Christian, and several others have been solid enough to have an abundance of success at the 3A level.

But their coaches also know the challenges that come with lower numbers both in the school and on their own teams.

Amy Downing, the coach at Cornerstone Christian, led the Bulldogs to the 3A playoffs for the first time in school history in her first season at the helm last year. Downing is ecstatic to continue shaping the building blocks of a strong program at the 2A level.

“It’s nice to be able to be linked together and compete against mostly schools that have a lesser number of high school students,” Downing said. “We only have about 80 students total, so to be able to field a team with full numbers is harder for us than a school in 3A.”

While 2A is expected to bring more balance to the playing field, many hope the inception of another classification also encourages schools that don’t have a girls soccer program to consider introducing one.

“I hope it grows to more teams,” Dawson coach David Martinez said. “At the end of the day, you want to be able to call yourself the state champion beating the best there is at 2A, not just out of a few schools.”

With 26 teams dotted around the state in the smallest division together, 2A has far less girls soccer programs in it than 3A (51), 4A (74), and 5A (61). Homan also believes there’s a window of opportunity for others to join them on the soccer pitch.

“I hope that there’s going to be more smaller schools around the state adding soccer and hopefully then the competition continues to get a little bit better and more girls get a chance to play and enjoy the game,” the Denver Christian coach said.

Martinez says the only downside to having 2A is that every team has a girl who can compete at a much higher classification and players like that won’t be asked to do as much now. Nonetheless, he’s excited about the prospects of the new classification.

“I think we put a lot of emphasis on 5A and 4A and all that, but we just have to realize that every classification is important,” he said. “We still have the same passion, the players still have the same goals, and state championships are still felt the same way.

“By creating 2A, I hope we aren’t creating a handicap division, but more of a division that is going to be as exciting and productive as the other divisions throughout the years.”

Another week, another new team atop the Class 5A baseball rankings.

Rocky Mountain became the latest team to ascend to the top of CHSAANow.com’s poll this week when the Lobos received eight of the 15 first-place votes and edged No. 2 Mountain Vista. Cherry Creek, the former No. 1, fell to third this week.

Rocky is the third team to lead the 5A ranking this season following preseason No. 1 Regis Jesuit and Creek.

Fairview stayed put at fourth in this week’s poll, and Grandview stayed at fifth. Behind them, three new teams joined: No. 6 Monarch (6-0-1), No. 7 Fruita Monument (12-0) and No. 9 Heritage (7-2).

ThunderRidge is No. 8 this week, while Regis is No. 10.

In 1A, there’s also a new No. 1. Eads takes over after getting four of the eight first-place votes. Former No. 1 Holly dropped to third. Community Christian is second.

That 1A poll added Granada (No. 8) and Cornerstone Christian (No. 9).

The other No. 1 teams stayed the same this week. Those are Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A) and Resurrection Christian (2A).

Other newcomers include No. 9 Wheat Ridge in 4A; No. 8 La Junta and No. 9 Bayfield in 3A; and No. 9 Ellicott in 2A.

Three new teams joined the Class 5A girls soccer rankings this week.

Cherokee Trail (No. 8), Rocky Mountain (No. 9) and Grandview (No. 10) all joined CHSAANow.com’s poll.

Rock Canyon continued to lead 5A at the top, receiving eight of the 11 first-place votes. ThunderRidge is second, Mountain Vista is third, Broomfield is fourth and Arapahoe rounds out the top five.

The No. 1 teams in 4A (The Classical Academy) and 3A (Colorado Academy) remained the same. However, Denver Christian took over the top spot in 2A.

The Crusaders got five of the six first-place votes in that class, and edged Vail Mountain, which is No. 2. Vail Mountain handed former No. 1 Front Range Christian its first loss last week.

  • Cherry Creek baseball takes over as No. 1 in 5A ranking

After beating two ranked teams last week, including then-No. 1 Regis Jesuit, Cherry Creek has taken over atop CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A baseball rankings.

The Bruins beat Regis Jesuit on Monday and then-No. 4 Legend on Wednesday, giving them three wins over ranked teams so far this season. They did drop a 5-1 decision to then-No. 10 Mountain Vista on Friday.

However, voters still gave Cherry Creek eight of the 15 first-place votes that were cast this week, and the Bruins totalled 124 points to lead the poll. Rocky Mountain and Mountain Vista each got three first-place votes; those two teams are No. 2 and 3, respectively.

Fairview received the other first-place vote, and moved up one spot to fourth this week. Grandview, which got a big win over then-No. 6 ThunderRidge on Friday, rounds out the top five.

Regis Jesuit fell from No. 1 to No. 6, ThunderRidge is No. 7, and three newcomers complete 5A’s ranking this week: No. 8 Pine Creek, No. 9 Arapahoe and No. 10 Ralston Valley.

There’s also a new No. 1 team in 1A, where Holly takes over. The other No. 1 teams — Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A) and Resurrection Christian (2A) — remained the same this week.

With many programs heading out of state for spring break, or simply taking time off, the next rankings will release on April 6.

  • Three new teams join 4A baseball rankings

Things got a bit crazy when this week’s Class 4A baseball poll was released.

Three new teams — Pueblo West, Pueblo East and Mountain View — joined CHSAANow.com’s ranking after going unranked in the preseason.

Pueblo West jumped all the way up to No. 3 following its 4-0 start which includs a win over then-No. 4 Palmer Ridge, as well as an impressive showing at a tournament in New Mexico.

Pueblo East is No. 5 this week, while Mountain View is No. 8.

Green Mountain remained No. 1 in the 4A poll. In fact, none of the No. 1s changed from the preseason, meaning Regis Jesuit (5A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Dove Creek (1A) all held firm.

In 5A, Columbine joined the poll at No. 9. They were the lone newcomer to that ranking.

The 3A poll added La Junta (No. 10), while Dayspring Christian (No. 9) and Dolores (No. 10) are new to 2A. 1A added No. 9 Springfield and No. 10 Fleming.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

  • Rock Canyon, The Classical Academy new top-ranked teams in girls soccer

Rock Canyon is the new No. 1 team in this week’s Class 5A girls soccer ranking. The Jaguars received six of the 10 first-place votes from CHSAANow.com’s voters.

But that turned out to be just the start of the upheaval in 5A, where five teams received at least one first-place vote.

Arapahoe jumped from No. 9 to No. 2, and four newcomers joined the poll this week. Those new teams: No. 4 ThunderRidge, No. 6 Broomfield, No. 7 Grandview and No. 10 Fairview.

Mountain Vista is No. 3 this week, and Pine Creek is No. 5.

Things weren’t much more stable in 4A, where The Classical Academy vaulted from unranked to No. 1. Evergreen went from sixth to second, Valor Christian from eighth to third and Ponderosa from unranked to fourth.

Wheat Ridge (No. 9) also joined the 4A poll this week.

The No. 1 teams in 3A (Colorado Academy) and 2A (Front Range Christian) did stay put this week.
