  • Fairview climbs to No. 4 in latest 5A baseball ranking

    Fairview Arvada West baseball
Fairview, and shortstop Cameron Frazier (3) are No. 4 in this week’s 5A baseball poll. (Dennis Pleuss)

Perhaps no win was bigger for Fairview in recent years than last Thursday’s decision over then-No. 5 Rocky Mountain.

But the win for the Knights was just one-fourth a tough 4-0 week last week, and now they find themselves ranked No. 4 in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 5A baseball poll. Fairview was seventh last week.

The Knights are actually 7-0 in Colorado, with the lone loss coming in Arizona during a Spring Break tournament. Their lineup has produced double-digit scoring outputs the past four games.

ThunderRidge remained in its top spot in the 5A ranking, where it has been since the preseason. Regis Jesuit stayed at No. 2, and Chatfield held firm at No. 3.

Behind Fairview, Columbine rounds out the top five.

Ralston Valley is No. 6, Mountain Vista is No. 7 and Arapahoe is No. 8. Rocky Mountain dropped to No. 9 after going 1-2 last week.

Chaparral is the lone newcomer to 5A this week. The Wolverines rejoined the poll at No. 10.

Elsewhere, Swink took over the top spot in the 2A ranking. At 9-0, Swink moved up from No. 2. Former No. 1 Resurrection Christian dropped to No. 3.

The 2A poll added Kiowa (No. 8) this week.

The other No. 1 teams remained the same. Those are Montrose (4A), Holy Family (3A) and Stratton (1A).

The 4A poll has two new teams this week: Wheat Ridge, which joined all the way at No. 5, and Elizabeth, which is No. 7.

3A added No. 9 Brush, while 1A added No. 6 Briggsdale.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

  • 1A girls basketball semifinal roundup: Caliche moves to title game

    (Brock Laue)
    (Brock Laue)

LOVELAND — The Caliche girls basketball team, the No. 1 seed in the Class 1A state tournament, has lived by a quote by the greatest baseball player in history this season.

Babe Ruth once said, “It’s hard to beat a team that never gives up.” The Buffaloes embodied that mindset this season and it’s led them all the way to the state championship game after a 54-36 semifinal victory over Briggsdale on Friday evening.

The game was a rematch of a contest on Jan. 25.

Caliche won that one 49-42, a game the Falcons controlled the tempo in. Similarly, Briggsdale slowed the game down Friday night and took Caliche out of what they do best, push the pace and score in transition.

“That’s what they did earlier this year when we played them,” junior forward Jessica Taylor said of Briggsdale’s pace.

Caliche led 22-17 in a hard-nosed first half full of defense. The Buffaloes pulled away slowly but surely in a grind it out game with solid free-throw shooting and their great defensive guards forcing numerous turnovers.

Caliche coach David Huss was pleased with his team’s poise in the semifinals.

“I think they did a heck of a job defensively of getting us out of our game,” Huss said about Briggsdale. “The thing that I was happiest with for our girls, even though we weren’t playing the up-tempo pace, we never really got rattled. We maintained that lead all the way through and never allowed them any big runs.”

“They’re a very similar team to us and we battled with them earlier in the season in a very similar game to that,” Huss added. “They’re a well coached team, they’re hard playing, they’ve got good big girls, and they’ve got great guards.”

Huss was the coach last time the girls program at Caliche reached the title game back in 2001 when they finished as state runner-up.

“It’s a good feeling and a great opportunity for our team,” Huss said.

Caliche will seek their fourth state title in girls basketball and their first since 1986 when they take on No. 2 seeded Norwood on Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m.

If the Buffaloes keep displaying the toughness the Great Bambino once talked about, they could earn that 1A crown.

“We use that quote by Babe Ruth all the time,” Huss said. “’It’s hard to beat a team that never gives up.’ That’s kind of our motto and that’s how we play.”

    Norwood 53, Eads 32

Norwood held a 14-9 first quarter lead in the first final four game of the night at the Budweiser Events Center and never looked back.

Lucia Vlukova, a talented junior with size and scoring ability, tallied 18 points and Tracee Campbell and Jordan Williams chipped in 11 points each.

Eads will face Briggsdale in the third-place game at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The Mavericks will look to earn their second girls basketball state title. Their last one came in 1983. Norwood has also been state runner-up twice, 1986 and 2012. They will play Caliche in the title game on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

  • 1A girls basketball Great 8 roundup: Norwood edges Kit Carson

    (Brock Laue)
    (Brock Laue)

LOVELAND — Norwood, the No. 2 seed in the Class 1A girls basketball state tournament at the Budweiser Events Center, had a commanding 12-0 lead at the end of the first quarter over No. 7 seeded Kit Carson in the quarterfinals.

The Mavericks looked like they might run away and hide from the Wildcats, but Kit Carson showed a lot of heart and took a 28-27 lead with 5:20 remaining. Norwood never lost its cool in an exciting 38-35 victory to advance to their first final four since 2012 when it finished as runner-up to Pawnee.

Norwood held a 27-17 lead in the third quarter, but Kit Carson senior guard Brooke Crawford came alive. She was cold shooting in the first half with a mere three points, but ignited the Wildcats’ offense with 15 second-half points on an array of jumpers and drives.

The Mavericks remained poised as Jordan Williams, the leading scorer this season for Norwood with a 16.9 average, buried 4-of-4 at the charity stripe in the final two minutes in a 13-point performance. Lucia Viukova, a skilled 6-foot versatile player with a good mid-range jumper, chipped in 3-of-4 free-throws down the stretch and scored 15 points.

Norwood coach Greg King, also the head boys coach for the Mavericks’ playoff team, knew the matchup against Kit Carson wouldn’t be easy.

“It’s a good thing we got off to a good, quick start, because we knew they were going to comeback,” King said. “At some time they were going to make a run, but I thought our kids, when we lost the lead the one time, they were resilient and we took the lead back. It was a good win for us.”

Kit Carson will play Dove Creek in a consolation game Friday morning.

Norwood, now 23-1 this season, moves on to face Eads in the final four Friday evening. Eads, 21-1, beat Dove Creek 56-26 on Thursday.

“We knew it would be just like this,” King said about the hard-fought win over Kit Carson. “There are eight pretty good teams here.”

    Briggsdale 34, Idalia 33

In the day’s first game, the Briggsdale Falcons led 19-10 at the half, but Reagan Shaffer and Idalia fought back to take a 26-25 lead into the fourth.

Shaffer had 12 second-half points, but the Falcons’ Leilani Carrasco drained a winning jumper with two seconds left to lead Briggsdale to a 34-33 victory and a trip to the Final Four.

The Falcons will take on No. 1-seeded Caliche in the semifinals.

    Eads 56, Dove Creek 26

The Eagles were dominant and impressive throughout with leads of 26-12 at the half and 39-17 at the end of the third.

Kailyn Lane (13 points), six-foot-one Tanaia Hansen (12 points), and Brittanie Newman (10 points), led a balanced attack for the Eagles.

Eads has nine state titles in girls basketball, with its last crown coming in 2008.

The Eagles will take on Norwood in the Final Four at 4:00 p.m.

    Caliche 69, Cheraw 32

Caliche, the girls state title favorite, looked every bit as good as their hype with a dominant 19-0 start. The Buffaloes never looked back as they used all their speed, ball movement, and pressure defense to overwhelm the Wolverines and advance to the Final Four against Briggsdale.

Four Buffaloes scored in double figures led by Jessica Taylor’s 14 points.

The Caliche vs. Briggsdale matchup will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday.

  • Denver East narrowly holds onto top spot in 5A boys basketball ranking

With one week to go in the regular season, Fossil Ridge nearly overtook Denver East atop the Class 5A basketball rankings.

    Nearly.

The SaberCats remained in the No. 2 spot despite the fact that both schools received 10 first-place votes. Denver East, though, held on to its top ranking by one overall point.

The Angels have been No. 1 all season, save for one week in mid-January when Fossil Ridge led the poll.

Mountain Vista stayed put at No. 3 this week, and continued to be followed by No. 4 Regis Jesuit and No. 5 Eaglecrest.

Overland bumped up on place to No. 6, while Highlands Ranch went from No. 10 to No. 7 after going 2-0 last week.

Arapahoe dropped two spots to No. 8, Rangeview is the poll’s lone newcomer at No. 9, and Grand Junction rounds out the ranking at No. 10.

The Centennial and Continental leagues both have three teams in the top-10 this week. The Denver Prep, Front Range and East Metro and Southwestern all have one ranked team.

Elsewhere, the 1A poll has a new No. 1 team. Hi-Plains took over for Caliche after receiving eight of the 11 first-place votes in that class. Hi-Plains went 3-0 last week, while Caliche went 1-2, though both losses were to ranked 2A teams.

That ranking added No. 9 Cheraw and No. 10 Briggsdale.

Holy Family Jefferson Academy boys basketball
Jefferson Academy moved up to No. 3 in 3A this week. (Pam Wagner)

The No. 1 teams in 4A (Valor Christian), 3A (Holy Family) and 2A (Ignacio) stayed the same this week.

The 4A poll added No. 9 Cheyenne Mountain and No. 10 Denver West. 3A added No. 7 Denver Science & Tech and No. 10 Platte Valley.

Holyoke (No. 9) and Meeker (No. 10) were the new teams in the 2A ranking this week.

As the regular season ends for all classes this week, these will be the final rankings of the season.

Regis Jesuit remains atop the girls basketball ranking in 5A this week. (Mark Adams)

Poudre, winner of its past five games, has joined this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A girls basketball ranking.

The Impalas are now 16-5 and are ranked No. 10.

Regis Jesuit continued to lead the ranking, as the Raiders have all season long. In fact, the top-6 all stayed the same this week, including No. 2 Grandview, No. 3 Lakewood, No. 4 Mountain Vista, No. 5 Fossil Ridge and No. 6 Cherry Creek.

Highlands Ranch moved up to No. 7 from No. 9 and Rock Canyon from No. 10 to No. 8. ThunderRidge dropped one place to ninth.

Each of the other four No. 1 teams stayed put, too. Those are Broomfield (4A), Holy Family (3A), Lutheran (2A) and Caliche (1A).

With the regular season ending this weekend, these will serve as the final rankings of the season.
