  • 3A basketball roundup: Liberty Common continues run

Regardless of how it ends for the Liberty Common Eagles, this state tournament run has already been historical. Only a day after winning their first 3A playoff game ever, the Eagles once again advanced, this time taking down No. 9 St. Mary’s 58-51.

Needless to say, it’s the first time in school history that the team has advanced to the Great 8.

Their magical run now becomes a tad more difficult as they are set to face 3A No. 1 seed Sterling next week at Colorado School of Mines in Golden.

    (22) Brush 43, (6) Sterling 42

With their one-point win over Sterling, the Brush boys have outscored their opponents by a combined three points through the first two rounds of the 3A state tournament.

But it’s been good enough to get the No. 22 ranked Beetdiggers to the Great 8, where they will face No. 3 Lutheran.

    (3) Lutheran 77, (14) Trinidad 46

There may not be a more impressive team in the 3A girls bracket than Lutheran. After cruising by Eagle Ridge Academy in the first round, they kept their momentum going against the Trinidad Miners putting them in next weekend’s Great 8.

The Lions will take on Moffat County, who has also looked impressive in the early rounds of the 3A tournament.

    (28) Bayfield 69, (12) Eaton 61

After topping The Pinnacle for the big upset on Friday, the Bayfield Wolverines showed that it wasn’t a fluke win.

The Wolverines got by the Reds on Saturday to advance to their first Great 8 appearance since 1986. They’ll face Colorado Academy who advanced by avenging an early-season loss to St. Mary’s.

  • 3A basketball roundup: Bayfield shocks The Pinnacle

Don’t tell Bayfield they were the No. 28 team in this years 3A boys state basketball tournament.

The Wolverines squeaked into this year’s field of 32 teams and were placed near the bottom of the pecking order. But it was they who had the last laugh Friday night. Their reward for making the tournament was to travel to No. 5 overall seed The Pinnacle.

    Challenge accepted.

And when it was over and done with, the Timberwolves never stood a chance. The Wolverines pulled the 3A upset of the night with a 75-54 win to advance to the Sweet 16 where they’ll face Eaton.

    (4) Manitou Springs 47, (29) Jefferson Academy 28

This was anything but a cakewalk for the favored Mustangs. In the second quarter they were facing a 17-0 deficit, but would eventually light their fuse and go on a 47-11 run to end the game.

Sophomore Shelby Megyeri paced the Mustangs with 14 points on the night, 12 of them coming in the second half.

    (22) Brush 52, (11) Kent Denver 50

The Sun Devils found themselves down by two, but had the ball with under 10 seconds to go. They couldn’t convert on the possession and the Beetdiggers advanced to the Sweet 16.

They’ll face Sterling on Saturday where it will be the fourth matchup between the two teams this year.

    (25) Liberty Common 67, (8) Bennett 51

Liberty common took the court for their first ever playoff game at the 3A level Friday night. They didn’t disappoint their supporters or themselves as they convincingly knocked off Bennett to advance to the Sweet 16.

Halley Milkos scored a team-high 25 points and Kayla Rhoads added 21 of her own to help the Eagles advance to the next round.

Heading their respective classifications in the CHSAANow.com polls are Regis Jesuit (5A), Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Dove Creek (1A).

Green Mountan and Resurrection Christian are defending champions, while Regis, Eaton and Dove Creek were all runners-up last season.

The 5A poll was the most split, with six different teams getting first-place votes.

Regis led the way with five first-place votes and 126 total points. Rocky Mountain, the defending champion, also got five first-place votes, but totalled 114 points.

Cherry Creek, another team to get a first-place vote, opens the year at No. 3. Legend (No. 4), Fairview (No. 5) and Chatfield (No. 9) also received at least one first-place vote.

ThunderRidge is sixth in 5A’s preseason poll, and is followed by No. 7 Dakota Ridge and No. 8 Grandview. Mountan Vista rounds out the poll at No. 10.

In 4A, Green Mountain was a unanimous selection with all 10 first-place votes. Montrose is No. 2, followed by Valor Christian, Palmer Ridge and Lewis-Palmer. Holy Family, last season’s 3A champion which has moved up to 4A, begins at No. 10.

Eaton heads 3A’s poll, and is also a unanimous pick with all 10 first-place votes.

Resurrection Christian received eight of the nine first-place votes to lead 2A. Caliche, last year’s 1A champ, is now in 2A but is unranked to begin the year.

Dove Creek received seven of the eight first-place votes to top 1A’s preseason ranking.

  • Rock Canyon returns to 5A basketball ranking at No. 8

Rock Canyon has returned to CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A boys basketball rankings. The Jaguars are No. 8 in this week’s poll.

They were last ranked just prior to the break, but fell out last week. Rock Canyon’s return means the Continental has five ranked teams for the fourth straight poll.

Elsewhere in 5A, Regis Jesuit remained a unanimous No. 1 selection with all 16 first-place votes. In fact, teams Nos. 1-4 stayed put, including No. 2 ThunderRidge, No. 3 Dakota Ridge and No. 4 Eaglecrest.

Overland returned to 5A’s top-5, while Chaparral dropped one place to No. 6.

Mountain Vista is No. 7, Denver East is No. 9 and Montbell is No. 10.

The four other No. 1 teams also remained the same: Longmont (4A), Colorado Springs Christian (3A), Sanford (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A).

In 4A, Pueblo West (No. 8) and Sierra (No. 9) joined this week. The lone newcomer in 3A this week was Manitou Springs (No. 10), while 2A added Caliche (also No. 10).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.

  • Legend, Denver East join first boys basketball rankings after the break

    Legend Dakota Ridge boys basketball
Monroe Porter, left, and Legend joined the 5A poll at No. 9 this week. Dakota Ridge, meanwhile, is up to No. 3. (Dennis Pleuss)

Legend and Denver East have joined CHSAANow.com’s boys basketball rankings in Class 5A this week. The Titans are No. 9, and the Angels are No. 10.

Legend, 9-3 this season, has won seven consecutive games. It plays at No. 8 Mountain Vista on Friday.

Denver East, meanwhile, returned to the poll after a short hiatus. At 5-6, the record is somewhat deceiving. Three of the losses came at an out-of-state tournament, and a fourth, to Chaparral, came in a wild double-overtime matchup. They own wins over Legend and No. 2 ThunderRidge.

Regis Jesuit continued its stay atop the 5A poll, and are a unanimous pick with 16 first-place votes. The Raiders are 10-0. ThunderRidge also kept its No. 2 spot.

Behind those two, however, the movement began.

Dakota Ridge (11-0) shot up to No. 3, and Eaglecrest bumped up one place to No. 4. Chaparral rounds out the top five.

As was the case before the break, a total of five teams from the Continental League are ranked. With that league now in the thick of its schedule, it should be a battle every night.

Each of the other No. 1 teams also stayed put. Those are Longmont (4A), Colorado Springs Christian (3A), Sanford (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.
