  • Football roundup: Horizon knocks off Legacy with late safety

    Horizon was stuffed on fourth down with less than three minutes to play, and it looked like Legacy might escape with a big win in Class 5A football. But then the Hawks got a game-changing, go-ahead safety and walked away with a 22-21 win on Friday night.

    The game was a wild one.

    Legacy jumped out 14-0 in the second quarter, but Horizon battled back to tie it at 14 in the third quarter.

    Legacy took the lead when quarterback Matt Lynch, a UCLA commit, threw a touchdown pass later in that quarter. Horizon answered with a Cade Verkler rushing score, but the extra point missed, making it a 21-20 Legacy lead in the fourth quarter.

    Late in the fourth quarter, Horizon had a 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard-line. The Hawks were stuffed. But two plays later, Horizon got the key safety. It was 22-21, and the Hawks would hold on to win.

    2A/1A: (3) Bayfield 35, (1) Paonia 0

    Bayfield ended Paonia’s 26-game winning streak in stunning fashion.

    It was 22-0 at halftime, and the lead only grew from there. Bayfield forced three turnovers in an outstanding defensive effort.

    “We had to be physical up front, and we had to stop them,” coach Gary Heide told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “The plan worked to perfection.”

    Paonia’s 26-game streak was the second-longest in the state.

    “I’m kind of a low-key, one-game-at-a-time, and, ‘No game is no more important than the other’ guy, but this morning, I just realized the opportunity that Bayfield had, along with getting a win,” Heide said. “A game like this, you end up gaining a lot of confidence.”

    Bayfield quarterback Kelton McCoy threw three touchdown passes for the traditionally run-based offense.

    “We don’t pass a whole lot, but when we do, we try to do it at optimal times. Tonight, it really worked out,” Heide said. “Kelton McCoy threw some really nice passes.”

    3A: (1) Pueblo East 47, Discovery Canyon 36

    Discovery Canyon nearly pulled off a major upset, but Pueblo East was able to pull out a win.

    “It was a fun night,” Pueblo East coach Lee Meisner told the Scoreboard Show. “We knew we were going to get everything they had. … We had a heck of a game.”

    This game featured 10 ties or lead changes, including a number in the final quarter. It also had a 99-yard kickoff return.

    Discovery Canyon led 28-27 going to the fourth. Pueblo East soon went ahead 33-28, and Discovery Canyon answered to retake the lead at 36-33.

    Then, with 2:45 to go, Pueblo East took the lead for good at 40-36. The Eagles added a late touchdown to ice the game.

    Said Meisner: “We just kept preaching to our kids: ‘We have to play four quarters of football. No matter what the score is, just at the end of it, do your job, and then worry about the score.’”

    5A: Doherty 24, Fruita Monument 21 (OT)

    Doherty jumped out to an 18-0 lead at halftime, but then Fruita Monument started to chip away.

    It was 18-13 after the third quarter, and then tied in the fourth after a safety and a field goal.

    In overtime, Fruita Monument kicked a field goal on its possession, and then Doherty’s Tequan Baker scored the winner on a 6-yard run:

    1A: Limon 26, (4) Burlington 0

    Limon pulled off the upset of its rival, and improved to 4-0 this season.

    “Our kids really stepped up tonight,” Limon coach Mike O’Dwyer told the Scoreboard Show. “I thought they played really well. By far, the best game we’ve played all year.”

    Of the shutout, O’Dwyer said, “Anytime you play Burlington, they’re so disciplined and so well-coached, you have to play assignment defense and everybody has to do their job and not worry about what everybody else is doing. You just have to take care of your job. I thought tonight, our assignment defense really played very, very well.”

    1A: (5) Cedaredge 40, (10) Center 13

    It was 14-13 at halftime, but Cedaredge pulled away to notch a huge top-10 win to move to 4-0.

    “They had some turnovers and we capitalized on those turnovers,” coach Brandon Milholland told the Scoreboard Show. “Another important piece that I realized late in the fourth quarter is we’re starting to get out of our own way and kind of believe in what we’ve going on.”

    Cedaredge pulled away to 25-13 after the third quarter, then put the game away in the fourth.

    8-man: (3) Norwood 38, (4) Sargent 28

    Norwood was clinging to a 16-12 lead at halftime, but pulled away in the third quarter with two quick scores.

    “We got a lucky bounce,” coach Brandon Alexander told the Scoreboard Show. “We scored quick, and turned the ball over, and scored again. Two scores early in the third quarter, that was really huge for us.

    “Sargent was a great team, they were very athletic and fast, so it was exactly what we had to have.”

    Notables

    • Broncos defensive end DeMarcus Ware gave Englewood a pregame speech, and the Pirates beat Elizabeth on homecoming, 32-21, in 3A.
    • There were a number of games decided by wide margins on Friday. By the time the night was over, there were 22 total shutouts, 11 of which were decided by 40 or more points. In all, the average margin of victory for all games was 27.8 points.
    • Ranked teams are 39-9 so far in Week 4, but only two of those losses have come to unranked teams.
    • In 5A, TJ Jones had six touchdowns, including the game winner, to help Boulder beat Prairie View in overtime, 41-35.
    • 8-man’s West Grand beat Elbert 46-0, and gave head coach Chris Brown career win No. 302. He’s four shy of the all-time mark of 306 held by longtime Denver East and Machebeuf coach Pat Panek. The Mustangs are 4-0 this season.
    • Alameda moved to 4-0 for the first time in more than a decade following a 38-0 win over Denver North in 2A. The Pirates are ranked No. 10.
    • Victor Garnes had a 97-yard touchdown as Eaglecrest beat Castle View 31-3 in 5A.
    • In 8-man, No. 8 Granada escaped an upset with a 28-26 win over Kiowa.
    • A bit of a surprise, also in 8-man: No. 2 Sedgwick County handled No. 10 Holly 64-7.
    • Cheyenne Mountain picked up its first win of the season in 4A, beating Mitchell 36-35 on a 28-yard field goal with 7.2 seconds remaining.
    • In 6-man, No. 4 Arickaree/Woodlin beat No. 6 Otis 53-14.
    • 3A No. 4 Rifle shutout Eagle Valley 26-0. “That’s a pretty tough place to go play, but ultimately we’re very happy with the way our kids played,” Bears coach Damon Wells told the Scoreboard Show. “We’ve been around long enough to know that any time you win a game in our league, it’s worth cherishing.”

  • Football roundup: No. 5 Palisade knocks off No. 3 Holy Family in 3A

    Palisade had a key fourth-down stop near the goal-line in the fourth quarter as the fifth-ranked Bulldogs upset No. 3 Holy Family 42-34 in a huge Class 3A football game on Friday evening.

    PD Riddle ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, while Prescott Price and Isaac Maestas each had two touchdowns.

    “It was like an arena football game,” Palisade coach Joe Ramunno told Colorado Preps’ Scoreboard Show on Friday. “We had to take away possessions, and we were able to do that.”

    The game tilted back-and-forth throughout, though Palisade never trailed. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter, and that proved to be the difference.

    “That’s what we knew we had to do, because they are so potent offensively,” Ramunno said. “They came back, though. They brought it back to 28-21 at the half. … We just knew we had to keep a possession ahead as much as we could, but they made a run for it there at the end.”

    Holy Family quarterback Chris Helbig, who set the state passing record two weeks ago, continued his torrid early-season pace. He threw for three more touchdowns on Friday night, giving him 16 over three consecutive games. That breaks the previous record of 15 set by Grand Junction’s Doug Musgrave in 1988.

    Trailing 35-28 late in the fourth quarter, Holy Family marched down to the Palisade 5-yard-line, but the Bulldogs turned away the high-powered offense. Palisade scored on Maestas’ 87-yard touchdown on its next drive.

    “They had a great drive going on, and our defense really stepped up to get a great finish on it,” Ramunno said. “We were able to stop that fourth-down conversion, and then just a just a few plays later, Isaac was able to get into the end zone.

    “It was a big turnaround for us. They were going in to tie it up, and we ended up getting it back to (a 14-point lead).”

    Holy Family again cut into the lead to make it 45-34 with 55 seconds to play, but couldn’t recover an onside kick and Palisade was able to hang on.

    Maestas rushed for more than 200 yards for Palisade.

    5A: Mullen 38, (2) Pomona 31 (OT)

    Mullen rallied from down 24-13 in the third quarter to eventually take a 28-24 lead over the second-ranked Panthers with seven minutes remaining.

    Pomona went up 31-28 with a minute remaining, and then Mullen hit a field goal to send it to overtime.

    Once there, the Mustangs pulled off the biggest upset of the young season.

    5A: Arapahoe 17, (5) Grandview 14

    Arapahoe pulled off the upset thanks to the above field goal with a little over a minute to play.

    The Warriors led 7-0 at the half after Mitch Pennetta’s fumble recovery for a score. Grandview tied it up, but then Pete Mitchell hit Connor Williams for a 69-yard passing touchdown to give Arapahoe another lead.

    Arapahoe is now 3-0, including two wins over ranked teams.

    6-man: (1) Fleming 66, (3) Pawnee 22

    Fleming was up 24-6 at the half, then exploded in the second half to take the important 6-man matchup.

    “We came out aggressively,” Wildcats coach John King told the Scoreboard Show. “We just executed really well. We kind of went right at them and actually probably ran the ball more tonight than we have been lately.”

    5A: (7) Regis Jesuit 19, (9) Cherokee Trail  14

    The Raiders jumped out to a 13-0 lead at halftime, and held on for the important top-10 win.

    Cherokee Trail cut it to 13-7 in the third quarter, but Regis Jesuit pushed it back to 19-7 midway through the fourth quarter.

    The Cougars did score again in the final minutes, but Regis Jesuit got a game-ending interception.

    5A: Horizon 18, (8) Fairview 14

    Horizon rallied from a 14-0 hole to score the game’s final 18 points and pull the upset.

    The Hawks cut into that lead to make it 14-12 at half, then took the lead on Jared Jiron’s 1-yard touchdown with 2:15 to go in the third quarter.

    Horizon made a goal-line stand in the fourth quarter, and then recovered a muffed punt with two minutes left to hold on and win.

    The Knights had won 20 consecutive games in the regular season prior to Friday’s loss.

    4A/3A: (9) Palmer Ridge 48, (9) Lewis Palmer 14

    Isaiah Sanders threw for 440 yards and four touchdowns as Palmer Ridge won General Palmer’s Cup over its rival.

    Palmer Ridge (3-0) stretched its lead to 28-0 before Lewis-Palmer finally got on the board, and then cruised from there.

    • Mountain View beat rival Loveland for the first time ever, 38-28. It was the team’s ninth meeting.

  • Todd Casebier has Fruita Monument football 2-0 for the first time since 2000

    [dropcap]T[/dropcap]odd Casebier had a decision to make when he decided to take over the reins as head football coach at Fruita Monument last winter.

    During his previous 17 years as a head coach, Casebier had a philosophy that he stuck to: Run first.

    It served him well.

    In his seven years at Palisade, his first stint as a head coach, he played in two Class 3A state title games, losing in 2002 to Florence but returning the favor against the Huskies in the next season’s state title game.

    Ten years later, during his ninth of 10 seasons at Montrose, the Indians played for the 4A state title before losing to Pine Creek.

    Casebier’s belief has always centered offensively on a strong ground game.

    “It all starts with the run game,” Casebier said. “For me it sets everything up.”

    It’s working yet again. Fruita Monument, under Casebier’s new direction, is 2-0 for the first time since 2000. The program went 1-9 last season in Class 5A.

    Casebier had spent nine seasons competing against Fruita Monument in the 5A/4A Southwestern Conference. Despite a stretch of faltering records for the Wildcats during the previous few seasons, there was one thing in particular he relished about taking the head coaching job when it became open last spring.

    “The biggest thing for me is, I’ve always admired Fruita’s talent,” he said.

    But the Wildcats, even dating back to the late 1990s, have always been a finesse team, not a power team. That was certainly true of last year’s team, which threw the ball better than 80 percent of the time. But when Casebier made the decision to apply for the job, he was committed to alter that.

    “We need to change the pass-run ratio,” he said.

    That was his mission from the get-go.

    “The first words out of his mouth (were), ‘I have a plan and I work my plan,’” Fruita Monument athletic director Denny Squibb said of his first interview with Casebier last spring.

    It may have worked in Casebier’s favor that he was interviewing with Squibb, who was his athletic director at Palisade. Squibb was well aware of his body of work, and of his success.

    To do that, Casebier has to change the culture of the program — from the coaching staff on down.

    “We’re going as far different as you can,” he said of emphasizing the run game.

    He interviewed a number of potential assistant coaches, some of whom had worked through a stretch of three coaches in a very short span.

    “He said, ‘Here is the bus; either get on or get off,’” Squibb said of Casebier’s interview process for hiring assistants.

    Most were more than willing to hop on the bus. He retained five previous Wildcat coaches. He even dug in the past to hire a couple who had worked with him in Palisade.

    It helped that he was coaching players who had seen his success in Montrose, including numerous conference titles against larger schools.

    “We knew how he did it at Montrose,” Wildcats running back Braedon Graham said following the Wildcats’ 40-26 win over Denver East two weeks ago. Graham has been a big recipient of Casebier’s change on offensive game plan, carrying 59 times for 339 yards in two games.

    “The kids have been great because they knew they plan worked,” Casebier said.

    Many of those kids were on the losing end of the plan during Casebier’s years at Montrose. Caebier’s run-centered approach sets up not only the passing game and special plays, but the defense.

    “If you control the tempo of the game, you wear out the other team, hopefully,” he said. “You also put the pressure on the other team because they don’t have the ball.”

    Casebier saw big gains from his off-season and preseason workouts.

    “(Before), they didn’t get off the ball, and that’s what we do now,” he said. “They didn’t double block, and that’s what they do now.”

    It’s still a process.

    “Every week, we’ve got to get better,” Casebier said.

    That was proven last week when the Wildcats beat longtime cross-valley rival Grand Junction 23-0. The Tigers had dominated Fruita for years until last Friday. It was Fruita’s first win over Grand Junction since 2012.

    And while he’s trying to build a legacy, Casebier wants to see success now, even if they Wildcats are in their last season as a 5A team (they move down to 4A next season).

    “I’m not a patient guy,” he said.

    And he doesn’t think it’s fair to the seniors, who have committed four years to the program, to think about next year.

    “I want them to play to their ability,” Casebier said of his expectations from his players.

    Considering the talent he has, those are high expectations.

    Now comes the acid test for Casebier and his current charges. Next up is their annual game Friday with Montrose.

    “It’s going to be a fun game,” said Casebier’s replacement at Montrose, Jim Scarry. The two remain close friends and Friday’s game won’t change that.

    But it could be a statement game for Casebier and his team.

  • Football roundup: Fruita Monument beats rival Grand Junction, moves to 2-0

    For the first time since the 2012, Fruita Monument has won consecutive games. The Wildcats are 2-0 under new coach Todd Casebier following a 23-0 win over Grand Junction on Friday.

    “I’m just proud for our kids,” Casebier told Colorado Preps’ Scoreboard Show on Friday night. “They’ve had sand kicked in their face around here for a while, and our coaching staff has been great. I’m happy for Fruita.”

    Fruita finished 1-9 in Class 5A last season.

    “Any ‘W’ is important for Fruita right now,” Casebier said. “The fact that we’re 2-0 really is the most important thing, because the kids even buy in more, they work harder, and you just can kind of feel the wave going our direction.

    “I was part of a similar thing in Montrose, and some of the same things are happening for us here at Fruita. So I’m excited about that, and just happy to be a part of it. It’s just a neat deal for everybody.”

    This is also the first time Fruita Monument has beat Grand Junction since the 2012 season, when the Wildcats went 5-5 — their largest win total over the past decade.

    “I’ve just seen potential from the get-go since I’ve been here, and I really feel like it’s coming together,” Casebier said. “We’ll enjoy it this weekend and go back to work. We’ve got a big one coming up next week in Montrose.”

    Casebier was the coach at Montrose for 10 seasons prior to joining Fruita Monument, leading them to the 4A title game in 2013.

    “It’s going to be strange, for sure, being in a different locker room and looking across that field,” Casebier said. “Montrose was great to me, and I’ve got a lot of friends on the staff, all those kids I coached. So it’ll be hard that way, but at the same time, they’re competitors and of course, our guys at Fruita, we need to win. And I know Montrose wants this.

    “It’ll be a good football game. We’ll hug afterwards either way. Again, I’m not looking forward to playing those guys, but, as you said, I don’t do the schedule.”

    5A: (7) Regis Jesuit 23, (10) Mullen 17

    Michael Pavlakovich passed for a touchdown and rushed for another as No. 7 Regis Jesuit beat longtime rival Mullen, ranked No. 10, on Friday.

    The Raiders also got a rushing touchdown from Alec Barnes and solid defense all night in beating Mullen for the third season in a row.

    The win was the first for new head coach Danny Filleman, who moved from Arizona this offseason. Regis Jesuit had a tough loss against Cherry Creek in Week 1.

    The Raiders (1-1) will play Cherokee Trail next week. The Cougars beat Denver East 35-7 on Friday to move to 2-0.

    Mullen (1-1) got rushing touchdowns from Marcus McElroy Jr. and Shamond Hamilton in the loss. The Mustangs have a tough opponent in Pomona next week.

    1A: (5) Platte Canyon 36, (10) Wiggins 20

    Platte Canyon got an important early-season with thanks to a big second half that allowed the Huskies to pull away.

    Platte Canyon led just 14-8 at halftime, but extended that to 22-14 after three then scored twice in the fourth quarter to put this one out of reach.

    The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved up to Friday so a few Wiggins players could attend ACT testing.

    4A: (2) Longmont 45, (5) Falcon 26

    Longmont jumped out to a 10-0 lead at halftime, then pushed it to 24-7 in the third quarter. The Trojans, last season’s 4A runner-up, would roll from there.

    No. 2 Longmont is now 2-0 this season.

    Falcon, meanwhile, opened the season against the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the classification. The Falcons lost to Pine Creek in Week 1.

    3A/4A: (9) Greeley West 28, (8) D’Evelyn 20

    Greeley West led 14-0 at halftime, and 21-7 after three quarters, then held on for the win.

    The Spartans, who were 1-9 in 2013, have now started 2-0 in consecutive seasons.

    5A: (8) Fairview 35, Boulder 17

    Thomas Creese, the latest in a long line of successful Fairview quarterbacks, threw three touchdowns to lead the Knights to a rivalry win over Boulder on Friday night.

    Fairview led 21-0 in the first half, but Boulder rallied to make it 21-10 and later, 28-17, but Fairview held on.

    Boulder’s TJ Jones had two touchdowns in the loss.

    The game was the 52nd in the history of the two schools. Fairview has now won eight consecutive in the series, and 11 of the past 12. The Knights lead the overall series 32-20, according to BoCoPreps.com.

    5A: Bentonville (Ark.) 41, (3) Valor Christian 22

    Bentonville, the reigning 7A champion, took a lead in the second quarter and never looked back.

    Valor Christian had a 10-7 lead with 9:59 to go in the second, but Bentonville answered two minutes later and eventually built a 28-10 lead after three quarters. It grew to 35-10 before Valor broke the unanswered points streak.

    Eagles quarterback Dylan McCaffrey rushed for a score and threw for another in the loss.

    Notables

    • In the annual Cannon Game down south, Pueblo East beat Pueblo South 54-21. Dutch Clark Stadium unveiled its new scoreboard, too.
    • Crowley County knocked off 1A No. 4 Rye, 21-20. The deciding moment was a blocked field goal with 1:30 left. “It was a heck of a play,” Chargers coach Brandon Roe told the Scoreboard Show.
    • Monte Vista, ranked No. 8 in 1A, upset 2A No. 9 Gunnison 10-9. Monte Vista had a 60-yard touchdown pass on 3rd-and-22 late in the game. “It’s good for both programs to play top-ten teams from each other’s classification,” coach Manny Wasinger told the Scoreboard Show.
    • Florence stunned 2A No. 2 Faith Christian, 15-12.
    • No. 5 Pawnee handed defending 6-man champion Arickaree/Woodlin, ranked No. 3, its first loss of the season in a 31-26 game.
    • Another 6-man top-10 showdown: No. 4 Kit Carson beat No. 8 Cheraw 44-33.
    • 1A No. 1 Paonia shutout Ignacio 49-0, extending its winning streak to 25 games. That mark is second only to 4A’s Pine Creek, which has won 27 in a row. Pine Creek has a bye this week.
    • TJ Shelton had four touchdowns as No. 9 Meeker beat Coal Ridge 36-6 in 1A.
    • Silver Creek threw a 99-yard touchdown pass, but lost to 4A No. 3 Dakota Ridge, 44-21.
    • Sterling upset 2A No. 8 Strasburg, 26-18.
    • 8-man Springfield knocked off No. 3 Hoehne, 26-14.

    The 2015 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues and coaches, and then a vote of coaches. Players had to be first-team all-league in order to be on the all-state ballot.

    Players and coaches of the year were also selected by a vote of the coaches.
