Bridget Sutter (0) of Colorado Academy is the girls lacrosse player of the year. (Matt Daniels/MaxPreps)
The 2015 all-state girls lacrosse teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.
These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues and coaches, and then a vote of coaches.
Player and coach of the year was also selected by a vote of the coaches.

Information on the state tournament and draw creation
Only those teams who qualify four or more positions to state are eligible for the CHSAA state team championship title. The bracket creation process is as follows:
All 16 individuals/teams will be considered for placement on the draw.
The top 4 individuals/teams will be placed.
The committee shall consider the following factors (in no particular order of importance): strength of league, overall record, strength of competition, head-to-head competition and common opponents.
The remaining Regional Winners (#1’s) will be randomly drawn for places on the draw.
The Regional Finishers (#2’s) will then be randomly drawn for matches against a Regional Winner.
All Regional Winners will be paired against a Regional Finishers.
No two teams or individuals from the same Region will play each other during the first round of the state championship.
Wheat Ridge is the new No. 1 team in Class 4A. (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)
Wheat Ridge made a huge leap in taking over the top spot in the Class 4A baseball poll this week.
The Famers, No. 6 a week ago, beat then-No. 1 D’Evelyn, No. 5 Green Mountain, and No. 2 Evergreen as part of a 4-0 run last week.
They received five of the 12 first-place votes in CHSAANow.com’s poll, but it was the most any team got this week. Wheat Ridge also totalled 105 points, placing them just ahead of D’Evelyn, which got four first-place votes and 101 points.
Lewis-Palmer, which received two first-place tallies, is No. 3 in 4A this week. Evergreen dropped to No. 4, and Pueblo West completes the top-five.
The 4A poll added two newcomers: No. 6 Erie and No. 7 Palisade.
Green Mountain (No. 8), Ponderosa (No. 9) and Montrose (No. 10) round out the 4A poll.
The 5A ranking also saw a lot of change this week.
Cherokee Trail led three newcomers at No. 7 in the poll. Pine Creek (No. 9) and Legend (No. 10) also joined.
Rocky Mountain stayed atop the ranking with 11 of the 15 first-place votes.
The three other No. 1s also remained the same: Eaton (3A), Rye (2A) and Eads (1A).
Neither the 3A poll, nor 1A poll, had any newcomers this week. 2A added Swink (No. 9).
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.
These will serve as the final polls of the season, as 1A’s regular season ended last Saturday, 2A’s is set to close this Saturday, and 3A, 4A, and 5A will end next Tuesday.

Fruita Monument’s Dylan Row. (Courtesy of Rachelle Row)
[dropcap]G[/dropcap]ood, solid seasons have not been uncommon for the Fruita Monument baseball team the past several years. What it’s doing in 2015, however, is definitely out of the ordinary.
“Part of it is we have a lot of seniors (nine),” said coach Ray McLennan, who is in his eighth season guiding the Wildcats. “We had a pretty good record last season and we fell on our face a little bit and I think that actually helped us because it created a little bit of a chip on our shoulder.
“The kids realized that every game is a challenge and just because you won the last one doesn’t mean you are going to win the next one. We have a sense of urgency and have learned from our failures.”
The Wildcats made the playoffs last year, but were ousted by Arapahoe in the first round.
There actually is a long history of tradition within the program.
Fruita Monument has won two baseball state crowns in school history in 1993 – a 5-3 decision over Mitchell in 5A – and in 1970 a 13-2 victory over Las Animas in Class AA.
The Wildcats also lost in the 1989 AAA finals to Air Academy 7-4 and were upended in the 1964 Class A championship 7-6 by Fort Lupton. In 1959, Fruita Monument lost to Cheyenne Mountain 9-6 in the Class A title game.
This season, Fruita Monument has an outstanding .420 team batting average, paced by junior Cuba Bess who has a .600 average with four home runs and 37 RBIs. Senior Sam Graf (.518), junior Sam Schroeder (.467), and seniors Chris Cordova (.473) and Dylan Row (.442) also have been stellar at the plate.
“Honestly, 1 through 9, we don’t have any gaps in our lineup. Pitchers can’t rest,” McLennan said. “It is a good problem to have. My guys do a good job of attacking pitchers.”
Row, who has started at shortstop the past three seasons for Fruita Monument, is thrilled to be a part of this winning streak.
“It has been crazy, and a whole lot of fun,” the 6-foot, 160-pound Row said. “We have continued to work hard and we have enjoyed this because it doesn’t happen all that often. I think the biggest difference this season has been our consistency with our pitching and hitting.”
Graf, an outfielder and pitcher, concurred with Row.
“This season has been great,” Graf said. “We all know that we have something special here this year, and we want to take that as far as we can because a lot of us will never get another opportunity to achieve so much, and we realize it and that’s what keeps us motivated.”
In terms of pitching, Schroeder (6-0), junior Devon Canup (4-0), and Graf (4-0) have been the top starters, while senior Conner Harmon (1-0) has been very good in relief.
“Sam is a big strong kid,” McLennan said. “The growth he has made from his sophomore year to his junior year has really been impressive.”
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Schroeder quarterbacked the school’s football team and has 58 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings pitched.
The Wildcats close out the regular season next week with games against Grand Junction, and Grand Junction Central. A sweep will guarantee them the Southwestern League championship.
“That would be huge if we can win league,” Row said.
McLennan is well-versed in the history of prep baseball in Grand Junction. He played for his father, John at Grand Junction Central High School, graduating in 1984. The younger McLennan went on to play baseball at Mesa State College, now known as Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, from 1985-88.
“He is one of my volunteer assistants,” said Ray about his dad. “He’s 74 years old and he had hip replacement surgery and he doesn’t move around real well, but he was out hitting fungoes with me (Wednesday) and he keeps score for us in the dugout and his wisdom and insight is very good.”
In McLennan’s first seven seasons at the helm of Fruita Monument the team made the playoffs five of seven years, but has yet to get past the first round.
“This has been one of those years as a coach, I don’t ever want it to end, it has been fun,” McLennan said. “We are just trying to play one game at a time and worry about that opponent only. We have a long ways to go to get to that point (of winning a state championship this season), but it would certainly be exciting if that happened. It has been a good ride and the community is really rallying around our guys.”
Grant Witherspoon and D’Evelyn now sit atop the Class 4A baseball poll. (Dennis Pleuss)
D’Evelyn and Rye took over atop their respective baseball rankings on Monday.
D’Evelyn is 13-0 and now heads the Class 4A poll from CHSAANow.com after receiving nine of the 12 first-place votes and totalling 106 points, well ahead of No. 2 Evergreen’s 86 points.
Former No. 1 Green Mountain was upset by Valor Christian last week, and fell to fifth. Valor Christian joined the 4A poll at No. 9 this week.
Rye (10-0), meanwhile, is the new No. 1 in 2A after last week’s No. 1 Resurrection Christian lost to Brush, the No. 7 team in 3A at the time.
That ranking added No. 10 Kiowa (7-3).
Fruita Monument is now ranked No. 4 in 5A. (Tom Hoganson)
In 5A, Fruita Monument’s rise up the ranking continued. The Wildcats, who are now 17-0, bumped up two spots to No. 4. Included in last week’s 3-0 record was a win over Montrose, which was ranked No. 8 in 4A at the time.
Rocky Mountain continued to lead the 5A poll, and got 11 of the 15 first-place votes. Mountain Vista also held firm at No. 2.
Behind them, Cherry Creek pushed up to No. 3, then Fruita sits fourth and Rock Canyon rounds out the top five.
Fairview dropped to No. 6 and Mullen moved up to No. 7. Monarch is eighth, Denver East is ninth and Grandview is tenth.
The Nos. 1 teams in 3A (Eaton) and 1A (Eads) both held on to their respective top spots this week.
Sterling (No. 9) joined the 3A poll, while 1A added Nucla (No. 8).
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

Three teams joined the Class 5A baseball rankings this week, and no rise was greater than that of Rock Canyon, which now finds itself in the No. 5 spot.
The Jaguars (11-1) went 3-0 last week, and led a host of new teams to CHSAANow.com baseball polls. Also joining in 5A were No. 9 Mullen (7-3) and No. 10 Denver East (11-1).
Rock Canyon beat then-No. 8 ThunderRidge and then-No. 9 Heritage last week. The Jaguars are off to their best start since opening 8-0 in 2009-10.
Mullen, meanwhile, is unbeaten against in-state teams at 7-0. And Denver East’s lone loss came to Rock Canyon in its opener, 9-7, on March 12.
Rocky Mountain remained atop the 5A poll, and Mountain Vista stayed in No. 2. Fairview bumped up to No. 3, jumping just ahead of Cherry Creek, which is now No. 4.
Fruita Monument is up one spot to No. 7 and Grandview is No. 8.
The other No. 1 teams in each classification also remained the same. Those are Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Eads (1A).
The 4A poll added No. 7 Ponderosa, and 3A has two newcomers — Valley (No. 9) and St. Mary’s (No. 10).
The 2A ranking added No. 8 McClave/Wiley, as well as No. 10 Yuma.
There are four new teams in this week’s 1A poll: No. 5 Primero, No. 6 Fleming, No. 7 Springfield and No. 10 Antonito.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.
