Denver East’s grip on the No. 1 spot in Class 5A boys basketball continues to grow tighter.

In this week’s CHSAANow.com rankings, the Angels received 13 of the 20 first-place votes. Last week, Denver East received 12 of 20.

The Angels are now 11-0 in Colorado, and have an average margin of victory of 19.8 points in those games. That includes a 3-point win over Cherry Creek on Dec. 13 and a one-point win over Eaglecrest on Dec. 16.

Since January, Denver East is winning in-state games by an average of 24.6 points.

Still, Fossil Ridge remains ever present. The second-ranked SaberCats are now 17-0, and received the other seven first-place votes this week. They are the only other team to be ranked No. 1 this season, holding that spot for one week in mid-January.

Mountain Vista moved up one place to No. 3 after a big week that included a 60-58 win over No. 5 Regis Jesuit at the buzzer.

Eaglecrest is No. 4 this week, and Regis Jesuit remained at No. 5. Arapahoe bumped up two places to No. 6, as did Monarch, which is now No. 7.

Overland is No. 8, Highlands Ranch is No. 9 and Chatfield is the lone newcomer at No. 10.

Other new teams this week: No. 10 Denver South (4A), No. 10 Denver Science & Tech (3A), No. 9 Simla (2A) and No. 9 Primero (1A).

Valor Christian stayed atop its ranking in 4A, as did Holy Family (3A), Ignacio (2A) and Caliche (1A).

Denver East is back on top of CHSAANow.com’s 5A boys basketball ranking. The Angels overtook Fossil Ridge by one overall point to reclaim their spot.

Fossil Ridge, which remained unbeaten by going 2-0 last week, had a one-week stay atop the poll. Denver East got 11 first-place votes to Fossil Ridge’s nine.

Denver East beat Denver North 94-31 in its lone game last week.

Regis Jesuit remained in the No. 3 spot and Cherry Creek in No. 4. Eaglecrest bumped up one place to round up the top 5.

Mountain Vista moved up two places to sit in sixth this week. Arapahoe is No. 7 and Overland fell three spots to No. 8.

Dakota Ridge is the lone newcomer to this week’s 5A ranking. The Eagles (9-2) have won eight of nine games, and are No. 9 this week.

Monarch fell one place to No. 10.

The poll’s other No. 1 teams — Valor Christian (4A), Holy Family (3A), Ignacio (2A) and Caliche (1A) — all stayed the same, as they have since the preseason.

The 3A ranking added Centauri (No. 9) and Bishop Machebeuf (No. 10), while 1A added Briggsdale (No. 10).

There were no newcomers in either the 4A or 2A polls. However, Pueblo South made a big jump in 4A, going from seventh to fourth.

  • Thomas Jefferson snaps Denver South’s winning streak in top-10 boys hoops battle

DENVER — Treyvon Andres of Thomas Jefferson swatted six blocks on the leading rebounder in Colorado.

“My plan was to not let him get that many offensive rebounds,” Martin said. “That’s where he gets a lot of his points.”

Andres recorded 17 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals as No. 6 Thomas Jefferson (8-4) won at No. 10 Denver South (8-6), 59-57 on Wednesday.

The first three quarters played tight between the two teams as they exchanged leads. Going into the fourth quarter, Denver South led 47-45 after scoring 21 points in the third. Thomas Jefferson played stellar defense, allowing a game-low 10 points, in the final minutes as they took the win.

With seven seconds left in the game, Andres got thrown to the ground — an obvious flagrant foul — on a fastbreak. He nailed 1-of-2 free throws to give his team a two-point lead.

“It was a really hard foul — I just had to get through it,” Andres said. “It was a big free throw. I’m just glad enough I could make one.”

Thomas Jefferson, a 4A school, had lost three-straight games, all to 5A teams — Highlands Ranch, Aurora Central and Rock Canyon — before Wednesday. They lost by a combined total of 15 points over the streak, including a 60-59 loss to Highlands Ranch on Jan. 8.

“We’ve been grinding and grinding but losing a bunch of close ones,” coach Grant Laman said. “No one wanted to look at each other with four losses in a row.”

Denver South, on the flip side, had won six-straight games before hosting Thomas Jefferson. Senior Ibrahim Sylla has the most rebounds of anyone in Colorado, averaging 13.3. He scored 19 points and grabbed 19 boards in the loss. His vertical-jumping abilities stunned the crowd by throwing down four monstrous dunks.

“I don’t think you can shut (Sylla) down — he’s awesome,” Laman said. “We just wanted to limit him the best we could. We told Trayevon, ‘You’ve got him all night, you can play huge in the middle.’ That’s two college basketball players going at it, and the state should smile when those things happen.”

Next up, Thomas Jefferson travels to Lincoln on Jan. 17. Last season, Thomas Jefferson beat Lincoln 75-64 behind 22 points from Andres. Thomas Jefferson is 3-5 against Lincoln all-time.

“I don’t know how I’m going to prepare for (Lincoln) yet,” Laman said. “We had a game Monday, and we just won so I haven’t thought about them yet. They’re really good — we will figure something out.”

Fossil Ridge, unbeaten and with a number of impressive wins under its belt thus far, is the new No. 1 team in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 5A boys basketball poll.

The SaberCats, off to a 10-0 start, edged Denver East — which had held the No. 1 spot since the preseason — despite having one fewer first-place vote. The Angels are No. 2 this week.

Regis Jesuit moved up one spot to No. 3, while Cherry Creek made the week’s biggest gain by going from No. 10 to No. 4. Overland rounds out the top 5.

Eaglecrest is sixth and is followed by Arapahoe, Mountain Vista, Monarch and Grandview.

The 4A ranking continued to be led by Valor Christian and added two new teams: No. 7 Pueblo South and No. 10 Denver South.

3A added Aspen (No. 8), while 2A got a new No. 1 team in unbeaten Ignacio. The 1A ranking added Primero (No. 10).

LAKEWOOD — Denver South turned up the defensive pressure and cleaned things up on the glass in the second half Friday night at Green Mountain High School.

The Rebels evened up their record to 5-5 this season with a 71-64 road victory in boys hoops action. Denver South trailed 40-34 at halftime, but turned things around in the second half.

“The main focus is we felt we were getting beat on the boards,” Denver South coach Malik Fletcher said after the Rebels’ first game back from winter break. “We dedicated the second half to cleaning up the rebounds on both ends.”

The Rams rarely had second-chance opportunities after halftime. Green Mountain senior Will Zeiner hurt the Rebels several put-backs in the first half. Zeiner poured in 13 points in the first half, but was held scoreless in the second half.

Denver South took the lead for good with 5:05 left in the fourth quarter when senior Antonio Garcia drained a 3-pointer to give the Rebels a 57-55 lead. Senior Tyson Purifoy hit another 3-pointer a minute later to push Denver South’s lead to 60-55.

“It felt good coming off of break,” said Purifoy, who finished with a game-high 28 points. “It was tough being behind coming into the second half. We had a slow start, but we got it done.”

Purifoy and senior Lorenzo Snoddy (20 points) led the way for the Rebels. Denver South outscored Green Mountain (3-4 record) 25-14 in the final quarter.

Denver South’s 6-foot-8 senior Ibrahim Sylla had a quiet 15 points, but had a couple of key baskets in the final two minutes to keep Green Mountain at bay.

Green Mountain sophomore Austin Fritts had a team-high 24 points for the Rams. He drained six 3-pointers and was fouled on two other 3-point attempts that led to five made free throws.

“We were prepared coming in knowing (Fritts) was going to make some shots,” Fletcher said. “We just wanted to stay positive if he knocked some down.”

With Denver South picking up its defensive intensity, Green Mountain didn’t get many open offensive looks in the second half while being held to 24 points in the second half.

“We’ve got to work harder on screens. We’ve just got to work,” Fritts said. “We had wide-open looks in the first half, but when they came up on us in the second half we needed to run more offense and be more aggressive.”

Senior Daniel Brughelli had a solid second half for the Rams. He finished with 13 points in what was Green Mountain’s third straight loss.

Green Mountain plays one final non-league game at 7 p.m. on Jan. 6, before heading into its 14-game 4A Jeffco League schedule. The Rams will host defending 5A Jeffco champion Chatfield next Monday night.

The Chargers (6-2, 2-0 in league) will come into Green Mountain High School on a four-game winning streak. It will also be Chatfield’s first game since the winter break.

“This is exactly what we need,” Fritts said. “These two games (Denver South and Chatfield) are big for us. It shows what we are going to be going up against and shows what we are made of.”

Denver South hosts Hinkley at 7 p.m. on Jan. 7.
