  • Four teams join new-look 5A baseball ranking

Just as seemingly the entire classification heads out of state for spring break tournaments, the Class 5A baseball rankings got a facelift. Four new teams joined CHSAANow.com’s poll this week, and others made big jumps.

Chatfield (No. 6), Columbine (No. 7), Arapahoe (No. 8) and Fairview (No. 10) all joined the 5A poll. The teams are a combined 11-1 to start the season.

ThunderRidge continued to lead that 5A poll, following an 8-7 win over then-No. 3 Grandview at Coors Field last week.

No. 2 Rocky Mountain also got a win at Coors Field last week, beating then-No. 7 Chaparral. The Lobos stayed put in second. Behind them, though, the change started.

Ralston Valley moved up three places from No. 6 to No. 3, and Regis Jesuit bumped up one spot to No. 4. Grandview rounds out the top five.

Three of the four newcomers are next, and then Cherry Creek is No. 9 after a tough 0-2 week. Fairview rounds up the top 10.

The change didn’t stop with 5A. In 4A, Montrose took over the top spot following its win over Valor Christian on Friday. Valor, last week’s No. 1 team, fell to No. 3. Windsor, 5-0 to start the season, is No. 2.

The 4A ranking added No. 7 Delta, No. 8 Niwot and No. 9 Palmer Ridge this week.

The No. 1 teams stayed the same in 3A (Holy Family), 2A (Resurrection Christian) and 1A (Stratton).

The 3A poll added No. 7 University and No. 8 The Classical Academy.

Teams Nos. 8-10 are all new in 2A: Peyton, Hotchkiss and Ignacio.

The lone newcomer to the 1A ranking was No. 9 Weldon Valley.

Because of the large number of out-of-state games this week, and thus, a lack of in-state competition, there won’t be new baseball polls until April 7.

    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Valor Christian and Resurrection Christian have risen to the top of their respective baseball rankings this week.

Valor, No. 2 in the Class 4A preseason, bumped up one spot following preseason No. 1 Mountain View’s 1-2 start. The Eagles received seven of the 11 first-place votes and lead this week’s CHSAANow.com ranking. Mountain View slipped to No. 9.

Montrose moved from No. 4 to No. 2, Windsor is now No. 3 and Longmont — which beat Mountain View twice — is No. 4. Air Academy rounds out the top 5.

Falcon (No. 7) and D’Evelyn (No. 8) are newcomers to the 4A poll.

Resurrection Christian, meanwhile, takes over atop 2A. The Cougars got four first-place votes and edged No. 2 Lutheran by four overall points.

Denver Christian, the preseason No. 1 in 2A, dropped to No. 3. That ranking added Front Range Christian at No. 9.

The other No. 1 teams remained the same this week. Those are ThunderRidge (5A), Holy Family (3A) and Stratton (1A).

The 5A poll added No. 9 Dakota Ridge, which beat preseason No. 4 Cherry Creek last weekend.

New to 3A are Valley (No. 7) and Basalt (No. 10). The 1A ranking added No. 9 Dove Creek.

  • 1A boys basketball Great 8 roundup: Cheyenne Wells tops Norwood

    (Brock Laue)
    (Brock Laue)

LOVELAND — The Cheyenne Wells boys basketball team had a day of firsts on Thursday at the Budweiser Events Center. Coach Matt Roberts had never experienced the state tournament. His players had never been on this stage, either.

The Tigers understandably experienced some early jitters in a sloppy 9-5 first quarter lead, but settled down and seniors Matt Sanders and Dalton Renner took over in a 52-44 victory over No. 6-seeded Norwood in the Class 1A Great 8.

Cheyenne Wells, the No. 3 seed, held a 22-17 halftime lead as Sanders, an ultra-competitive guard, had 12 first-half points.

Norwood’s Morgan Rummel, a dynamite scorer, tallied 24 points and Cheyenne Wells struggled a bit with turnovers, but the Tigers’ firepower led to a 38-24 lead headed into the fourth. Cheyenne Wells sealed their final four appearance with poise at the charity stripe.

“It feels great. I’ve never been to state as a coach and none of our players have,” Roberts said after the win. “We were pretty nervous coming in. We got this first one under our belts.”

Sanders (23 points) and Renner (16 points) combined for 39 big ones as Sanders was effective slashing throughout.

“Matt has to be one of the top two or three players in the state,” Roberts said about his leader. “He’s averaging over 20 a game, six rebounds, six assists, and shooting over 50 percent. He’s our team leader and sets the pace for everything.”

“I’m a leader on my team and so I try to come through when they need me,” Sanders said. “We’ve been working hard all year. My whole team came through tonight. Everybody made big plays.”

Renner was a difficult matchup for the Mavericks with his size, 6-foot-4, athleticism, displaying quickness and leaping ability, and length. He had six blocks Thursday.

“Dalton actually wrestled last year,” Roberts said. “He’s doing a good job, averaging about 15 and 10 rebounds. (Sanders and Renner) are the heart and soul of this team.”

Norwood will play Vail Christian in a consolation game Friday morning. Cheyenne Wells, 18-6 this season, will play No. 2-seeded Hi-Plains on Friday evening in the semifinals.

“We play them every year in the regular season and it always comes down to the wire,” Roberts said about the Final Four showdown. “It should be a good game. I think both groups will look forward to it.”

    Hi-Plains 69, Vail Christian 54

Hi-Plains opened with a 23-7 first quarter as 6-foot-4 Avery Marzolf scored 13. The Patriots cruised from there on, winning their 18th out of the past 19 games and clinching a spot in the semifinals against Cheyenne Wells.

Marzolf finished with 24 points as Justin Miltenberger chipped in 15. Hi-Plains is now 21-2 this season. Game time is set for 5:30 on Friday evening against Cheyenne Wells.

    McClave 50, Holly 37

A slow starting game, Holly led 21-20 at halftime, but the Cardinals took control with a 30-16 second half outburst as Taylor Geisinger went for 24 points and Gabe Longworth contributed 14.

McClave will hope to upset the No. 1-seeded Caliche Buffaloes in the final four on Friday evening at 8:30 p.m.

    Caliche 70, Fleming 29

The Buffaloes were equally as dominant as their girls team in the quarterfinals with a 70-29 thumping of Fleming as Caliche never trailed.

Caliche boys have claimed seven state titles in the school’s history. They had a four consecutive title streak snapped last year as McClave won the crown.

The Buffaloes will face McClave at 8:30 p.m. on Friday evening in the 1A game of the night.

ThunderRidge is the preseason No. 1 in 5A. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Defending champions lead CHSAANow.com’s preseason baseball rankings in four of the five classifications heading into the 2014 season.

Those No. 1 teams: ThunderRidge (5A), Mountain View (4A), Holy Family (3A) and Denver Christian (2A). Stratton (1A) is the lone preseason No. 1 to not win a title last season; defending champ Fleming opens at No. 5.

ThunderRidge received 11 of the the 17 first-place votes in the 5A poll, and topped the ranking with 154 overall points. The Grizzlies return a number of key pieces, including shortstop Brody Westmoreland, pitcher/outfielder AJ Jones, pitcher/outfielder Tyler Loptien and infielder Josh Brown.

Regis Jesuit got three first-place votes, and is No. 2. Rocky Mountain is No. 3, Cherry Creek is No. 4 and Grandview rounds out the top five.

Mountain View, No. 1 in 4A, returns the bulk of its team from last season’s title team, including star shortstop and pitcher Adam Baumann.

The rest of the 4A top five includes No. 2 Valor Christian, No. 3 Air Academy, No. 4 Montrose and No. 5 Pueblo West.

Holy Family leads the 3A poll and is followed by No. 2 Eaton, No. 3 Faith Christian, No. 4 Lamar and No. 5 Brush.

In 2A, Denver Christian leads the way. Resurrection Christian is second, and is followed by Lutheran, Las Animas and Paonia.

Stratton is on top of the preseason 1A poll. No. 2 Caliche, No. 3 Elbert, No. 4 Eads and No. 5 Fleming compile the top five.

  • Paonia all but wraps up 2A crown at state wrestling

DENVER — Paonia is a tiny town in the far west region of Colorado. It’s four hours from Denver and has less than 2,000 people in it. Many people in Colorado may not have even heard of Paonia, but it is home to a great wrestling community and a dominant 2A program.

The Paonia Eagles are the two-time defending state champions and all but sealed up their third consecutive crown Friday at the Pepsi Center.

Paonia has already accumulated an impressive 144 points, well clear of second place Meeker (92.5) headed into Saturday’s championship matches.

“It was a good day,” Paonia’s coach Andy Pipher said after the semis. “We had seven in the quarters. We lost one right in the final seconds at 120 with Josh Altman (in the semifinals). He wrestled hard and did the gameplan for five minutes and fifty nine seconds, but at the last second relaxed a little bit and got taken down and lost by one.

“We punched five others in that wrestled really hard and stuck to the gameplan and found a way to win.”

When asked what’s made his program so successful, Pipher said, “Really good community support. We’ve got community support for all these kids and they help us out with our summer program.”

“We run our summer duals up there June 14th and 15th,” Pipher said. “This year we get 400 kids in there to wrestle and counting. We get everybody from Arvada West to Rocky Mountain High School, from the east to the north to the south, all four corners, and it’s a big event. About seven states are represented there, they come through Nebraska.”

“All those things help,” said the long-time Paonia Coach. “There’s probably more matches wrestled in the county high school gym than any high school gym in the state of Colorado during one calendar year. That’s where the success comes from.”

Paonia started the semifinal round with Altman’s last second loss to Highland’s Jakeob Trujillo 4-3. Trujillo, a sophomore, will face Baca County’s senior Stetson Loader in the finals tomorrow.

After Altman’s loss, Paonia’s machine got chugging again with five out of six semifinal wins the rest of the night. Jesse Reed, a two-time defending champ as a junior, advanced at 126 to face Swink’s junior of their own, Austin Coy. Both wrestlers will enter the title match undefeated on the season.

Pipher had nothing but praise for his most touted wrestler.

“Jesse’s a great wrestler,” Pipher said. “He works hard, just a quiet leader, but he goes in there and stays after practice every day and does extra and works and puts a lot of time in during the summer and its paying off.”

Bo Pipher won his semifinal match for Paonia at 132, Ty Coats advanced at 152, Zach Milner at 160, and Tony Darling at 285. Logan Schopp, a junior, lost to Lyons’ sophomore Jon Hickman by fall in four minutes, 33 seconds.

Paonia had five of their seven semifinalists advance. Mathematically, the crown isn’t yet Paonia’s, but it would take a lot tomorrow for them to not win it.

Baca County’s Johnny Loflin, a 195-pounder, had a great day of his own.

Loflin’s defeated all three of his opponents thus far via pin. His longest match was in the semifinals against Sedgwick County’s Jimmy Horalek, but the match was still a mere one minute and ten seconds. Loflin will face Rocky Ford’s Nate Finnell, a winner over Soroco’s Cody Constine in the semis, tomorrow in the state title match.

Loflin is seeking his second consecutive title.

“I have a lot of experience,” he said. “I’ve been here all four years. I’ve placed fifth, second, and first, so I’ve just had a lot of experience. I feel confident. Wrestling is 90 percent mental and I think I have that part down pretty well.”

Lolflin has mixed feelings about his season up to this point, but is optimistic.

“It’s been good,” he said. “My team’s awesome. I love them this year. They’re a real hard working group of kids. I’m really pleased with the underclassmen that are coming in during the mornings and running extra, doing all that sort of stuff.

“My season’s personally been a little slow. It hasn’t been my best season, but I’m confident and I feel good.”

Saturday, the Baca County senior will be attacking the last match of his high school career with fire.

“I’m going to be aggressive, just open up my offense, and just see what happens,” Loflin said. “I just want to be aggressive and stay on him.

“Last year I was kind’ve trying to get something off my shoulders,” he added. “This year I’m kind’ve relaxed, a lot more relaxed, and just wrestling.”

Meeker’s T.J. Shelton joined Paonia’s Reed and Baca County’s Loflin as defending champs that advanced to Saturday’s finals. Shelton pinned his third opponent of the meet with a fall of Norwood’s Kolby Starks in 1:07. He will face Lyons’ Jon Hickman for all the marbles in the 170 pound weight class.

Three of the four returning champs moved on, but Sedgwick County’s Seth Harrington wasn’t one of them. Harrington, the winner at 132 last season, lost to Holly’s Ryan Nordyke in the 138 pound weight class, in a 9-5 decision in the semis. Harrington will wrestle the last meet of his high school career against Wray’s Alex Tarin for third place, while Nordyke will take on Center’s Jose Chavez for the crown.

Paonia stole the headlines Friday evening at the Pepsi Center though as they look to add to their four state wrestling titles in school history. All have been under coach Pipher during his 16 seasons at the helm.

Pipher reflected a little Friday on how this year’s team compares to his last two.

“The last two, I think we had probably more depth in each weight,” Pipher noted. “This year I think we have more, well we got five in the finals, so we have more top end kids.”

“Last year I think we won 13 matches on the first day,” Pipher added. “This year we only have 10 here, but they’re good quality kids. Not to take anything from last year’s, but it’s just a different team.”

Paonia may have a different team, but the Eagles look good enough to win yet another 2A wrestling title and add to their town’s pride.

  • Denver East narrowly holds onto top spot in 5A boys basketball ranking

With one week to go in the regular season, Fossil Ridge nearly overtook Denver East atop the Class 5A basketball rankings.

    Nearly.

The SaberCats remained in the No. 2 spot despite the fact that both schools received 10 first-place votes. Denver East, though, held on to its top ranking by one overall point.

The Angels have been No. 1 all season, save for one week in mid-January when Fossil Ridge led the poll.

Mountain Vista stayed put at No. 3 this week, and continued to be followed by No. 4 Regis Jesuit and No. 5 Eaglecrest.

Overland bumped up on place to No. 6, while Highlands Ranch went from No. 10 to No. 7 after going 2-0 last week.

Arapahoe dropped two spots to No. 8, Rangeview is the poll’s lone newcomer at No. 9, and Grand Junction rounds out the ranking at No. 10.

The Centennial and Continental leagues both have three teams in the top-10 this week. The Denver Prep, Front Range and East Metro and Southwestern all have one ranked team.

Elsewhere, the 1A poll has a new No. 1 team. Hi-Plains took over for Caliche after receiving eight of the 11 first-place votes in that class. Hi-Plains went 3-0 last week, while Caliche went 1-2, though both losses were to ranked 2A teams.

That ranking added No. 9 Cheraw and No. 10 Briggsdale.

Holy Family Jefferson Academy boys basketball
Jefferson Academy moved up to No. 3 in 3A this week. (Pam Wagner)

The No. 1 teams in 4A (Valor Christian), 3A (Holy Family) and 2A (Ignacio) stayed the same this week.

The 4A poll added No. 9 Cheyenne Mountain and No. 10 Denver West. 3A added No. 7 Denver Science & Tech and No. 10 Platte Valley.

Holyoke (No. 9) and Meeker (No. 10) were the new teams in the 2A ranking this week.

As the regular season ends for all classes this week, these will be the final rankings of the season.

  • 5A boys basketball ranking adds Grand Junction at No. 9

Grand Junction started the 2013-14 campaign 7-0. The Tigers then lost two straight just prior to the winter break. However, since that break, GJ is 9-0.

This week, the Tigers cracked the top-10. They are ranked No. 9 in CHSAANow.com’s 5A poll.

Elsewhere in 5A, Denver East extended its stay at No. 1. Fossil Ridge remained at No. 2, and Mountain Vista at No. 3.

Regis Jesuit moved back up to the No. 4 spot after a 2-0 week. Eaglecrest dropped one place, and rounds out the top 5.

Arapahoe is sixth, Overland is seventh and Chatfield is eighth. Highlands Ranch rounds out the ranking at No. 10.

The 4A poll added Golden at No. 10. Other newcomers included No. 8 Centauri in 3A, No. 10 Denver Christian in 2A and No. 8 Shining Mountain in 1A.

Valor Christian (4A), Holy Family (3A), Ignacio (2A) and Caliche (1A) held firm atop their respective polls.

Complete polls for all classes are below.
