  • Chocolate milk grant helped Meeker wrestling this season

    chocolate-milk

One year ago, at the 2014 Colorado high school state wrestling tournament, the Meeker Cowboys wrestling team impressed us on the mat and with their enthusiasm for sports nutrition.

The wrestling team recognized not only the delicious taste, but the nutritional benefits of milk after a wrestling workout and were successful in winning a chocolate milk grant contest from Western Dairy Association for their 2014-2015 wrestling season.

Students, coaches and the school’s athletic director are all enthusiastic about the availability of chocolate milk in their high school locker room this season. Coach JC Watt raves that the milk grant “has allowed all of our athletes a chance to have a great recovery drink after all of our workouts,” and he’s noticed that offering milk post-exercise “improves the athlete’s attitudes, especially after a hard workout.”

Coach Watt adds, “every day we hear ’Do we get chocolate milk today?’ from our athletes who benefit from the protein, carbohydrates, fluid and electrolytes a cup of milk provides after a workout.”

Seeing the success with their athletes, Meeker plans to continue to provide milk to athletes in coming seasons; especially after early-morning workouts, where athletes appreciate milk the most.

Dairy farm families in Colorado are proud to have made it possible for student athletes to receive these milk grants. They care about student athletes and want to help them get the nutrition they need to succeed on and off the mat. “We thank the many dairy farmers in Colorado!” applauded the 2014-2015 Meeker wrestling team.

Western Dairy Association and Colorado dairy farm families congratulate the Meeker High School boys wrestling team for their incredible season and second place finish at this season’s state wrestling tournament last weekend in Denver! The benefits of refueling with milk helped place one champion, two second place, two third place and one fifth place winner at the tournament.

Would you like to see your athletes excel both on and off the field by replenishing their bodies with white or chocolate milk? Your team could win funds to provide FREE milk for a season.

If your student athletes aren’t fueling up with low-fat white or chocolate milk, this is a great opportunity to get started!

  • Rocky Ford wrestling overcomes pressure to land first 2A title in 25 years

DENVER – If trying to win his first state championship wasn’t enough stress, Rocky Ford senior Nate Finnell had the weight of his entire team on his shoulders Saturday night.

Finnell came into the 220-pound title match with the Meloneers trailing Meeker in the Class 2A state tournament standings by one point. A victory would send Rocky Ford to its first championship in 25 years – a loss would have wrapped it up for the Cowboys.

Finnell rose to the occasion in the biggest way possible, landing a takedown in the final seconds of the second period. He kept Sedgwick County/Fleming’s Levi Davis down for the entire third period to earn a 4-2 decision and a state title for his teammates – the first since the AA crown in 1990.

“My coach told me before not to worry about, just go out and wrestle your match,” Finnell said. “I did that and got it done – what means more than anything to me is that team title.”

Rocky Ford finished the three-day tournament with 134 points and two individual champions. Meeker placed second with 131 points, followed by Paonia (125.5), Centauri (109.5) and Norwood/Nucla (98).

“We’ve lost some state titles that same way, by one or two points, two years in a row,” Meloneers coach Mike Jurney said. “These kids just came out and wrestled their hearts out. For it to come down for us to win a match for Nate, it was just amazing.”

Finnell and sophomore Jacob Rodriguez claimed their first state titles, with Rodriguez winning the 106-pound title with a 5-3 decision over Akron’s Tanner Watson. But the team championship ultimately ruled the night.

“It means everything in the world,” Jurney said. “These kids have put in a tremendous amount of work. We’ve been close, knocking on the door, but to finally get through the door is fantastic. It’s great tradition and a great town, and we’re happy to bring it home to them.”

It was a record-setting night overall in the 2A ranks. Paonia’s Jesse Reed became the 18th Colorado wrestler to win four state titles with a victory at 126 pounds. Eagles junior Bo Pipher (138 pounds) and senior Zach Milner (160) each took home a second consecutive title as well – Pipher landed a first-period pin of Baca County’s J.D. Chenoweth, and Milner won 3-2 in overtime over Norwood/Nucla’s Tim Armintrout.

Meeker junior T.J. Shelton and Centauri senior Jareb Aziz joined the three-time state champion club. Shelton pinned Centennial’s Jose Cisneros in 50 seconds to claim the 170-pound crown and set himself up for a shot at a fourth title next season.

“It’s amazing. It’s been amazing every state title I’ve had,” Shelton said. “It’s been a great experience with great people and great matches.”

Aziz closed out his prep career with an undefeated season after pinning Fowler’s Blaine Larson in 3:51.

Aziz said he would never have reached this point without the help of his coaches. Going out with three pins in four matches just made it that much sweeter.

“It felt good. I wrestled him last week, so I knew it would be a little bit tougher this week,” Aziz said. “But I knew I could cap it off and win it again.”

A handful of returning state champions also brought home a second state title. John Mall sophomore John Andreatta posted a 15-0 technical fall at 113 over Centauri’s Quinton Montague. Norwood/Nucla senior Talon Harris pinned Lyons’ William Hickman at 120, and Holly’s Ryan Nordyke pinned Meeker’s Anthony Watt in 4:49 at 145 pounds.

Swink senior Austin Coy capped a prep career that saw four trips to the state finals with his first championship. Coy withstood a late reversal for a 3-2 decision at 132 over Highland’s Jake Trujillo, who almost took it home with a near fall before time ran out.

After three consecutive losses in championship matches, Coy made the most of his final chance.

“If you get it early on, then compared to that every time is a failure,” he said. “Building up to it in the long run, I’m glad it worked out this way.”

Buena Vista junior Keegan Wentz also got over the hump with a 2-0 decision to land the 182 title over Sedgwick County/Fleming’s Brandon Anderson. Wentz lost in the finals a year ago but put that behind him Saturday.

Crowley County senior Bryce McCracken posted a 4-1 decision at 152 over Meeker’s Casey Turner, and Limon junior Jayden Hilferty also earned his first state title with a 3-1 victory over Crowley County’s Keith Dunnagan in double overtime at heavyweight.

DENVER – Ryan Nordyke and Joseph Prieto spent Friday proving that it doesn’t matter where you start – the finish is what counts in the long run.

The two seniors are both returning state champions – Holly’s Nordyke captured the Class 2A 138-pound title last season and Holy Family’s Prieto did the same in 3A. Yet both wrestlers found themselves without a top-two seed at the 2015 state tournament.

Neither individual took it as a sign of disrespect, though. Instead they made it their mission to take out whoever was in their path and now have the opportunity to end their prep careers with a second consecutive championship.

“It didn’t matter where they put me,” said Nordyke, who posted a 12-6 decision over Paonia’s Gunnar Chesnik in the 145-pound semifinals Friday night at Pepsi Center. “I was going to have a tough run at it – it just didn’t really matter to me.”

Nordyke will meet Meeker’s Anthony Watt for the state championship Saturday night. Watt pinned another former champion, Swink’s Blake Denton, in the quarterfinals before doing the same to Rocky Ford’s Diego Reyes in the semis.

As Nordyke was taking care of business on one end of the floor, Prieto was doing the same on the opposite end.

The Holy Family standout pinned top-seeded Austin Shank of Olathe in three minutes, 34 seconds to advance to the 3A 145-pound finale. Prieto will meet a familiar opponent in Berthoud’s Jimmy Fate, who captured his first championship a year ago in the 4A ranks.

The undefeated Fate posted a 15-8 decision over Prieto in the 3A Region 1 finals last weekend.

“I’m excited. I want revenge,” said Prieto, whose twin brother Julian will wrestle for the 138-pound title. “I want to get the two-time.”

The state tournament yielded four brackets that featured two returning state champions, two each in 3A and 2A. Every classification had its share of “loaded” brackets that included multiple state placers. In 5A’s 138 field, five returning placers did battle, and six state placers from a year ago were in the 4A 145-pound bracket.

Pueblo County sophomore Chris Sandoval – a state runner-up a year ago – found himself in a challenging field in 4A at 126 pounds. Former state champion Josh Villa of Windsor and runner-up Michael Ramirez of Pueblo South were the bracket’s top two seeds; Sandoval was undefeated but had sustained a broken collarbone that kept him out for part of the season.

While both Villa and Ramirez were upset in the quarterfinals, Sandoval score victories by technical fall and pin Friday. He’ll meet Falcon freshman Jacob Butler for the title.

Sandoval said he wasn’t surprised that there were some upsets in the bracket.

“I knew there were other tough kids in there,” Sandoval said. “Anything can happen in wrestling.”

That’s the attitude that both Nordyke and Prieto embraced as well. Prieto said his seeding didn’t come as a surprise after the loss to Fate in the regional, but he also wasn’t concerned with who else was in the bracket or where they were seeded.

“I don’t pay attention to names, I don’t pay attention to records,” he said. “I have the mindset that I’m going to go out there, I’m going to do my best and I’m going to win. Whether that happens or not, that’s what I’m going to do.”

Nordyke, who has been competing with a torn ACL in his right leg that he sustained in December, also wasn’t thinking about facing top seeds or former champions. He said there are no easy brackets, but at the same time, no one is unbeatable.

“Our approach was just take one match at a time,” Holly coach Dean Crum said. “Focus on the person ahead of us and not look at the brackets.”

That mental toughness will be just as important Saturday night against Watt. Nordyke plans to have surgery on his injured leg in early March, but until then will keep pushing through the pain.

“One of my mentors told me it’s just a hurdle. I just have to jump over it,” he said. “I can’t think about that one hurdle all the time, I just have to do whatever it takes to overcome it.”

There are two championship matches Saturday night to feature two former state champions.

One comes in 3A at 132 pounds, where Valley’s Ruben Lucero will face off with Mead’s Sage Budd. The other is also in 3A, at 160, where Weld Central’s Dalton Robertson will face Valley’s Brendan Gonzales.

  • Trio of wrestlers going for third state titles of careers

DENVER — Grand Junction senior Jacob Trujillo’s wrestling career is on the brink of coming full circle.

Trujillo takes his undefeated 44-0 record into the Class 5A 160-pound championship match Saturday night at Pepsi Center in what will be his last bout in his final state wrestling tournament. He will attempt to join the exclusive fraternity of Colorado’s three-time state champions.

“It means everything to me right now,” Trujillo said after his third-period pin of Castle View senior Bevan Haycock in the semifinals Friday night. “I’ve been working hard for it my whole life. It would be great.”

Trujillo claimed titles at 160 and 145 pounds his junior and sophomore seasons. The only loss during his four trips to the state tournament came in the 120-pound champion bout his freshman season. Bear Creek’s PT Garcia defeated Trujillo, which began a run of three state titles for Garcia.

“I just get sad,” Trujillo said of thinking back to his lone loss at the state tournament. “It took away the chance to be a four-timer, but you learn from it and you have to move on.”

Trujillo has done more than just move on. He has an eye-opening 153-4 record during his decorated prep career. Trujillo has lost only once since losing the title bout in 2012. He can join the other 97 three-time champions with a victory Saturday night.

There are only 17 four-time state champions in Colorado history.

“It’s what everyone works for to be a state champion,” Trujillo said. “If you are able to do it in your young years, maybe go for two and then three. Rarely do people get the chance to go for four.”

There will be two wrestlers in 2A who will attempt to make the Colorado’s three-time state champion number reach 100. Meeker junior T.J. Shelton (170) and Centauri senior Jareb Aziz (195) have a shot at their third Saturday night.

Shelton captured titles in 3A at 160 and 170 his freshman and sophomore seasons. His second-period pin of Baca County junior Rafe Hutches gives Shelton the chance to snag a third title with a possible fourth on the horizon next season.

Aziz (39-0 record) stood atop the podium in 3A in the 182 and 195 weight classes after placing sixth as a freshman at 170.

“I’m relaxed,” Aziz said after his 10-1 major decision over Limon freshman Kaleb Gaede in the semifinals. “I’m going into tomorrow to get it done.”

Aziz would join Andrew Arellano (2002-2004) as Centauri wrestlers to be three-time state champs.

“As soon as I got that (first) state title I wanted it more,” Aziz said. “I dedicated myself to going hard in practice every day. It pays off.”

There are a host of juniors who will attempt to win their second state title Saturday night and keep their dreams alive for a third.

Fruita Monument sophomore Daniel Van Hoose, facing, finds himself on his back during the Class 5A 126-pound semifinal match Friday against Legacy junior Ryan Deakin. Deakin will attempt to win his second state tournament Saturday night at Pepsi Center. (Dennis Pleuss)

Legacy junior Ryan Deakin (5A 126) is one win away from taking his second state title. Winning a third is definitely a possibility, but Deakin knows there is a long road ahead before thinking about a third trip to the two of with winner’s stand at Pepsi Center.

“I’m just focused on getting better and having fun with the sport,” Deakin said. “Sometimes results are out of your hands.”

Pomona junior Tomas Gutierrez (5A 113) admitted there is always pressure for him when he steps on the mat at the state tournament. After winning the 5A title at 106 pounds as a sophomore, Gutierrez will try to stay on the path of a three-time state champion Saturday.

“That’s ultimately the goal, but you can’t overpass any matches down here,” Gutierrez said when asked about the possibility of a three-peat next year. “You have to wrestle one at a time, all the time. If you can do that you’ll succeed. I’ve got to worry about getting my second one (state title) first.”

Saturday’s schedule beings at 10:30 a.m. with third-round consolations in 2A/3A. The fifth- and third-place matches start at 2 p.m. The parade of champions for all classification title bouts begins at 6:30 p.m. at Pepsi Center.

  • ThunderRidge takes over as No. 1 in 5A boys basketball rankings

ThunderRidge took down No. 1 Regis Jesuit last week, and took over the top spot in the Class 5A boys basketball poll this week.

The Grizzlies received 21 of the 22 first-place votes and amassed 219 total points in rising to the top of CHSAANow.com’s ranking. They beat Regis Jesuit 59-36 on Tuesday.

Regis dropped to No. 2. Behind them, Overand (No. 3) and Eaglecrest (No. 4) held steady while Rock Canyon moved up to No. 5.

Rangeview jumped up four places to No. 6, Dakota Ridge fell to No. 7 and two newcomers were next — eighth-ranked Mountain Vista and No. 9 Cherokee Trail. Chaparral rounds out the 5A ranking.

There was little change to 4A, where Longmont continued to be a unanimous No. 1 selection.

In 3A, Grand Valley joined at No. 9. Faith Christian remained atop that poll.

Likewise, the No. 1 teams in 2A (Resurrection Christian) and 1A (Sangre de Cristo) also stayed the same.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. These will be the final polls of the regular season.

Rangeview is No. 10 in this week’s 5A boys basketball rankings. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Rangeview has joined this week’s Class 5A boys basketball ranking at No. 10.

The Raiders, who are riding an eight-game winning streak, totaled 18 points to crack CHSAANow.com’s ranking.

The 5A poll continued to be led by Regis Jesuit, which got 18 of the 20 first-place votes in the classification. ThunderRidge, which got the other two first-place votes, stayed put at No. 2. Those two teams play on Tuesday.

Overland bumped up one spot to No. 3, leaping Eaglecrest. Chaparral rounds out the top 5.

Also ranked this week in 5A: No. 6 Dakota Ridge, No. 7 Rock Canyon, No. 8 Denver East and No. 9 Fossil Ridge.

In 4A, Longmont extended its stay atop the poll. The Trojans are a unanimous pick with all 20 first-place votes following their one-point win over then-No. 2 Holy Family.

Golden returned to the No. 2 spot in 4A this week, just ahead of Holy Family, which fell to No. 3.

The 4A poll added Air Academy (No. 9) and Pueblo South (No. 10) this week.

For the third time in three weeks, there is a new No. 1 atop the 3A poll after Lutheran was upset by Jefferson Academy last week.

Faith Christian makes a return after garnering nine of the 15 first-place votes. Colorado Springs Christian, another former No. 1, got the other six first-place votes and is No. 2 this week. Lutheran dropped to No. 3, while Jefferson Academy is No. 4.

That ranking added Alamosa (No. 10) this week.
