Last fall, for the first time in state history, every single volleyball champion successfully defended its title. Three of them are favored to win a third consecutive championship heading into the 2015 season.
Defending champions Lewis-Palmer (Class 4A), Eaton (3A) and Resurrection Christian (2A) are among top-ranked teams in the CHSAANow.com Volleyball Polls, which were released Monday. Also heading their respective classifications are Cherokee Trail (5A) and Idalia (1A).
The last team to win more than two straight titles was Cheyenne Mountain, which won five from 2008-12.
Lewis-Palmer is actually coming off a mythical national championship in addition to its two 4A titles. The Rangers got eight of the 11 first-place votes in 4A’s preseason poll. Ponderosa, the team they beat for the 2014 title, is No. 2.
Eaton, the defending 3A champion, holds the top spot in that poll after getting eight of the 10 first-place votes in that class. Colorado Springs Christian opens at No. 2.
In 2A, Resurrection Christian — yes, another defending champion — got six of the seven first-place votes to top the preseason poll. The Cougars have actually won 58-straight matches, which ranks fifth-best all-time. Yuma is No. 2.
Cherokee Trail opens as the favorite in 5A. The Cougars got six of the 11 first-place votes. Grandview, last season’s champion, is No. 2 and got one first-place vote.
Cherry Creek is No. 3, and Regis Jesuit is No. 4. Chatfield, the 2014 runner-up, is No. 5. The Charges received two first-place votes.
Two teams — Fossil Ridge and Brighton — received first-place votes, but did not make the 5A ranking.
The 1A poll is led by Idalia, which got all six first-place votes. Flagler is No. 2.
Voted upon by coaches and media members around the state. New voters can sign up by emailing rcasey@chsaa.org. These rankings have no bearing on postseason seeding.

The 2015 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.
These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues and coaches, and then a vote of coaches. Players had to be first-team all-league in order to be on the all-state ballot.
Players and coaches of the year were also selected by a vote of the coaches.
The 2015 all-state girls track and field teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.
These teams were created based upon results at the state meet.
Athletes of the year were selected based upon the number of team points they produced at the state meet. This means that they received the full amount of team points from individual events they participated in, as well as one-fourth of the total points earned by the team in relays they participated in.
Finally, in order to be considered for athlete of the year, they must first have made the all-state team by winning in a championship.
Scroll down to see the teams, or use the menu below to navigate to the class of your choosing.
Grandview’s four girls championships were the most in the state for that gender, while Creek’s four boys championships led the way.
Eaton, Colorado Academy, Lyons and Valor Christian all won three total team championships.
In all, 65 teams won at least one team title in 2014-15, with 17 winning at least two.

Individual titles
Thompson Valley totaled 14 individual championships in 2014-15, including five wrestlers. (Kai Casey/CHSAANow.com)
Thompson Valley had eight boys and six girls win individual championships in 2014-15 to account for its state-best total of 14.
Cherry Creek was second with 13, and Pomona was third with 10. Lyons won eight, while Air Academy and Cheyenne Mountain each captured seven individual crowns.
A total of 131 schools had at least one individual win a championship. Of those, 73 schools had at least two champions, and 10 had as many as five.
Below is a complete breakdown of individual championships this season.
Eaton, a longtime 3A baseball power, is headed to yet another title game. (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)
GREELEY — Before the Class 3A baseball semifinals even began at Butch Butler Field on Tuesday, the Eaton Reds knew they would be in the state championship game.
The Patriot League champions, and heavy title favorites throughout 2015, sealed their 19th appearance in the title game in the past 23 seasons, 20th overall, by cruising to the semifinals with no losses.
In a double elimination tournament, the Reds put themselves in an even more advantageous position Tuesday by thumping Sterling 13-6, meaning Brush — 6-4 winners over University in the other Final 4 showdown — will have to beat Eaton twice on Wednesday to win it all.
Bottom line: An all-Patriot League semis held no surprises as Eaton cruised to a 25-0 record on the season by battering the Tigers for 11 hits and being extra patient at the plate, earning eight walks. Sterling (16-9) scored three runs in the seventh to make it interesting, but the deficit was too much.
Eaton, which also beat the Tigers 17-0 and 10-0 in the regular season, is 75-0 in regular season conference play in the past seven years. They’ve outscored their opponents 271-57 this season. The odds are stacked against Brush (18-6). It would be hard to deny that.
But it’s not as if the Beetdiggers haven’t been here before. For the third time in school history, they will have to go through Eaton to earn a state title.
In 2012, they took down the Reds to kick off the playoffs, but lost to them 6-4 in the finals. In 1991, they beat the Reds 13-2 for their lone championship in the sport. All three of their finals appearances have come against the baseball machine in white and red. They know what they have to do.
And Brush has a winning core. Kyle Rosenbrock, Michael Guttierez, and Alec Petterson, stalwarts in the lineup this spring, were all named first team all-state on the gridiron as they led the Beetdiggers to the 2A football state crown over Kent Denver in the fall.
Niko Guzman, the winning pitcher Tuesday after scattering seven hits and only two runs, earned second team all-state honors in football.
“I would say, big games we’ve come through,” Rosenbrock said of his school’s success in both sports. “We have the experience and we’ve had a good group of guys all the way through.”
Now the senior, who crushed a two-run triple against University and got the final out on the mound in relief, will get the ball against Eaton as the starter for the second time in these playoffs.
Kyle Rosenbrock of Brush. (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)
Rosenbrock, the 2A football player of the year as a quarterback, pitched a six-inning, eight-hit, two-run, one-earned, and seven-strikeout gem in a narrow 2-0 defeat against the Reds on May 15.
“Rosenbrock is an outstanding athlete and he’s just a warrior,” legendary Eaton coach Jim Danley said. “He’s a great player. What we have to do is come out and find a way to get in advantageous counts. I told these guys to be ready to be in a very tight ballgame.”
All that being said, Eaton is Eaton. It has won 10 championships in the sport, tied with Revere for the most in history, and have been one of the most successful programs in any sport in Colorado. They’ll be hungry for their first crown since 2012 after losing back-to-back championships to Holy Family.
“We’ve got to come ready to play,” Danley said. “We are in an advantageous position, but that means very little once you get out on that field. It’s just about playing good baseball.”
First pitch is set for 3 p.m. Wednesday at Butch Butler Field. If Brush wins, that will force a second game immediately after. Brush needs a sweep, while Eaton needs one victory to earn the 3A crown.
DENVER and GREELEY — The state semifinals in 5A, 4A and 3A are Tuesday. Though weather has delayed the schedule yet again, it looks as though long-postponed games will finally be played.
We will have live coverage from each site throughout the day. Games begin at 1 p.m.
GREELEY — Instead of a full slate of state high school baseball games Saturday, the Class 3A bracket was rearranged following Friday’s wet weather.
Many games were moved to Monday, although two games are scheduled for Saturday – one the completion of a contest called on account of rain.
Rain delays at both Butch Butler Field in Greeley and at Frederick High School’s facility created a long day for the eight schools involved in the opening round of the state tournament.
Three opening-round games were decided, however, while the fourth is to be continued.
In Greeley, Eaton opened with an 11-0 win in six innings over Gunnison, while Brush rallied in 10 innings to defeat Peak to Peak, 3-2.
Meanwhile in Frederick, Sterling also went into extras, stopping Valley 12-9 in nine innings.
Rain and hail delayed the second half of the doubleheader in Frederick, where University and Bayfield were tied 4-4 entering the seventh. Before the field was hit by a deluge, the game was delayed by rain and hail four times.
The Bulldogs and Wolverines are to resume their game at 9:30 Saturday morning at Butch Butler. The winner will play Sterling shortly thereafter.

Reds down ‘Diggers
Brush and unbeaten Eaton were the only teams to get in two games Friday. After the Reds saddled the Cowboys with a shutout loss, they edged the Beetdiggers, 2-0.
“We’ve had some tough one- and two-run games this year,” said Eaton Coach Jim Danley, whose team improved to 25-0. “It’s toughened us up, so the kids know how to play in a pressure atmosphere.”
The game’s big hit was delivered by Eaton senior Ryan Koehler, who led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run over the fence in right-center field. The Reds led 1-0 after junior Joe Mondragon walked to start the fourth. Mondragon moved to third base on a single by sophomore Sean Carson and then scored when junior Joe Kuhn bounced a single into left.
Junior Dalton Lind and senior Lane Greiman combined on a one-hitter, with Lind getting the win after pitching the first 4 2/3 innings.
While the right-hander struck out four and didn’t walk anyone, he was lifted on a 3-1 count in the top of the fifth. Greiman ended the inning with a pop-up and continued to get help from his defense in the sixth and seventh.
Each was a 1-2-3 inning, with the seventh highlighted by the defensive play of the game.
Brush senior Kyle Rosenbrock, who pitched well enough to win, nearly had himself a leadoff walk. But after Greiman fell behind in the count 3-0, he got Rosenbrock to pop out to Mondragon at first base.
But that wasn’t the play of the game. Mondragon hustling into short right field to catch another pop-up with his back to home plate was.
“I was just going straight back, and I was lucky enough to see it at the last minute,” Mondragon said of his running down the short fly for the penultimate out.
“That was a huge, big-time play,” Danley said, “because if the ball lands, the tying run is at the plate.”
Instead, Mondragon successfully handled his third chance of the inning, gloving a ground ball with an underhand assist to Greiman, who got the save.
Danley credited Rosenbrock with a strong effort, who allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
“I thought our pitching was great, too,” Danley said. “It was a career best for Lind. Then Greiman came in and shut the door with his sidearm knuckle-curve.”
Eaton isn’t scheduled to play again until Monday afternoon, when the Reds will take on the winner of the Sterling-Bayfield/University game.
That gives Eaton an unexpected opportunity to relax, play one game, and then get ready for the remainder of the tournament that is scheduled for May 22-23.
“It will give (senior Brady) Tedesco a chance to get full rest,” Danley said. “He pitched four days ago (in the Reds’ 5-1 district-clinching win over Lutheran).”

Brush gets by Peak to Peak in extras
Brush (17-7) will play again in Monday’s second game at Butch Butler, where it will play the winner of the Valley-Bayfield/University elimination game.
The Beetdiggers advanced to the game against Eaton with their extra-inning win over Peak to Peak.
Leadoff hitter B.J. Hirshfeld singled, stole second base and then scored the game-winning run on a single by Arnoldo Maltos-Garcia.
Hirshfeld also pitched four innings in relief of starter Niko Guzman to get the win.
Guzman went the first six frames and allowed one run on two hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Hirshfeld went the final four and scattered six hits with three strikeouts but did allow the tying run in the top of the eighth, when the Pumas’ Jack Walther singled, advanced on a hit by Alex Bradfield, then scored on Matt Bognato’s single.
In Eaton’s opening win, it was staked to an early lead by Matt Burkart’s two-run home run after a single by Koehler. Caron and Tedesco also drove in runs in the Reds’ five-run first inning.
Eaton led Gunnison 8-0 after three innings, then won on the 10-run rule in the sixth when the Reds scored three times without getting a hit. Two walks, a hit batter and an error led to the early ending.

Notes:
Eaton is 4-0 in games decided by two or fewer runs this season.
There are five schools (Brush, Eaton, Sterling, University and Valley) from the Patriot League in the eight-team state bracket.
The seventh inning of Eaton’s second game Friday began at 7 p.m.
The game between Brush and Peak to Peak was delayed an hour “by two lightning strikes and steady, slow rain,” tournament director John Haefeli said.
Haefeli said by playing just one full game Saturday and adding Monday’s games to the schedule allows the bottom half of the bracket to catch up with the top portion.
Click on a game number to see details, including time and site. ^- Indicates extra innings.
The number next to a team is not the seed. It represents the District the team won.
The winners/losers of game 11 may be switched to ensure that each team is not playing a team it had played earlier in the tournament.
Bracket notes:
The site director will flip a coin for home team in all games.
The loser of Game 11 (L11) and winner of Game 11 (W11) may change places so that previous opponents are not matched. CHSAA will make determination.
If three teams remain after Game 13, the winner of Game 11 (W11) draws a bye to Game 15. If W11 loses Game 12, there will be three teams left and W11 earns the bye. W12 then plays W13 to reach finals. This spot is marked by a percentage sign (%) on the bracket.
Draws for the Class 4A girls tennis state tournament, held May 7-9 at Pueblo City Park, are below.
All matches start at 9 a.m. each day. The first two rounds at each position will be played Thursday. Friday morning will be all semifinals, and the playback matches will start immediately afterwards. All third- and fourth-place matches and finals will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Should weather intervene, check CHSAANow.com for contingency plans.
These results will be updated throughout the tournament.

Wheat Ridge is the new No. 1 team in Class 4A. (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)
Wheat Ridge made a huge leap in taking over the top spot in the Class 4A baseball poll this week.
The Famers, No. 6 a week ago, beat then-No. 1 D’Evelyn, No. 5 Green Mountain, and No. 2 Evergreen as part of a 4-0 run last week.
They received five of the 12 first-place votes in CHSAANow.com’s poll, but it was the most any team got this week. Wheat Ridge also totalled 105 points, placing them just ahead of D’Evelyn, which got four first-place votes and 101 points.
Lewis-Palmer, which received two first-place tallies, is No. 3 in 4A this week. Evergreen dropped to No. 4, and Pueblo West completes the top-five.
The 4A poll added two newcomers: No. 6 Erie and No. 7 Palisade.
Green Mountain (No. 8), Ponderosa (No. 9) and Montrose (No. 10) round out the 4A poll.
The 5A ranking also saw a lot of change this week.
Cherokee Trail led three newcomers at No. 7 in the poll. Pine Creek (No. 9) and Legend (No. 10) also joined.
Rocky Mountain stayed atop the ranking with 11 of the 15 first-place votes.
The three other No. 1s also remained the same: Eaton (3A), Rye (2A) and Eads (1A).
Neither the 3A poll, nor 1A poll, had any newcomers this week. 2A added Swink (No. 9).
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.
These will serve as the final polls of the season, as 1A’s regular season ended last Saturday, 2A’s is set to close this Saturday, and 3A, 4A, and 5A will end next Tuesday.
