  • Discovery Canyon new No. 1 team in 3A football rankings

    Discovery Canyon has perhaps the best combinations of wins to date in Class 3A football this season. As a result, the Thunder now own the No. 1 spot in CHSAANow.com’s ranking.

    Discovery Canyon, now 5-0, has wins over 4A Silver Creek, then-No. 4 Holy Family, preseason No. 7 The Classical Academy, then-No. 7 Pueblo East, and 4A Rampart this season.

    Voting in 3A remained split again this week, continuing a season-long trend, but the Thunder received seven of the 13 first-place votes, and had 122 total points. Lutheran, No. 1 since the preseason, dropped to No. 2 with six first-place votes and 114 points.

    Elsewhere in the classificatoin, Rifle moved up to No. 3, while Holy Family is now No. 4. The 3A poll added Conifer (No. 10) this week.

    In 5A, Valor Christian remained No. 1 following its win over Overland, and Pomona stayed put at No. 2. Ralston Valley, coming off yet another impressive win, moved up one place to No. 3. Grandview fell one spot to No. 4 after escaping Eaglecrest in overtime, and Fairview rounds out the top five.

    Cherry Creek is up to No. 6 after shutting out then-No. 9 Cherokee Trail. Regis Jesuit is No. 7, Overland No. 8 and Rocky Mountain is No. 9. Doherty rejoins the poll this week at No. 10.

    In 4A, Pine Creek extended its stay at No. 1. The Eagles beat then-No. 5 Vista Ridge last week. That ranking didn’t add any teams this week, though Fort Collins moved up to No. 2 from No. 4.

    Brush (2A), Paonia (1A), Dayspring Christian (8-man) and Arickaree/Woodlin (6-man) each stayed atop their respective polls this week.

    Newcomers included Gunnision (No. 9) and Bayfield (No. 10) in 2A; Rye (No. 10) in 1A; Sangre de Cristo (No. 10) in 8-man; and Pawnee (No. 7) in 6-man.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • 5A boys soccer rankings adds three new teams

    Columbine, Mountain Vista and Grandview all joined CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A boys soccer rankings this week.

    The Rebels are No. 5, Mountain Vista is No. 7 and Grandview is No. 10.

    Rock Canyon continued to lead the 5A ranking, and is still followed by Smoky Hill and Boulder.

    Air Academy (4A) and Kent Denver (3A) also held on to their respective No. 1 spots.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Doherty, Chatfield draw in top-10 5A boys soccer matchup

    LITTLETON — Some kind of adversity seemingly pops up for nearly every team during the season.

    For Doherty and Chatfield, two squads ranked in the top-10 of this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 5A boys soccer rankings, misfortune presented itself in a few different forms Friday afternoon in the non-league tilt at Chatfield High School. Maybe fittingly, after 100 minutes of play No. 7 Doherty and No. 10 Chatfield settled for a 2-2 draw.

    “It’s a gutsy performance from our boys to pick up the lack when we were down a man and down a goal. We never quit and battled back to even it up,” Doherty coach Jon Shub said after the tie. “I’m very pleased with their resolve. The cards were against them and they could have quit. That isn’t their character.”

    Doherty had to play a man down for nearly 70 minutes after forward Carlos Donelson received a red card in the 31st minute of the first half. The Spartans (7-2-1, 1-1 in 5A Colorado Springs Metro League) actually took a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute with a goal by Marcus Krause while playing a man down.

    However, Chatfield (5-2-2, 1-1 in 5A Jeffco League) answered back quickly with a goal from senior Jamey McGrath in the 47th minute. The Chargers took a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute when senior Jared Reiss fired home a penalty kick that McGrath drew when he was taken down in the Spartans’ goal box.

    It appeared Chatfield would take a 2-1 victory, but with five minutes to play Krause struck again with a header off a long free kick by Doherty goalie Nick Pallisco to tie the game at 2-2 in the 75th minute.

    “He (Krause) has definitely been our leader and stalwart,” Shub said. “We expect big things from him. I think he stepped up to the plate today.”

    The Chargers had the best scoring chances during the two 10-minute overtime periods. Reiss had the best scoring opportunity in the 93rd minute, but his shot went just wide of the net.

    “It was tough,” McGrath said of the final result. “We weren’t able to pull it out in overtime. It’s an unfortunate tie.”

    Chatfield’s biggest hardship so far this season is having its returning all-state striker Ben Overholt relegated to the bench. Overholt is in a sling after breaking his arm last week against Arapahoe. The Chargers started the season off strong with a 4-0-1 mark, but since Overholt’s injury the team is 1-2-1.

    “Frankly, we’ve been so depleted with injuries and sickness,” Chatfield coach Brock Blume said. “Big players are sitting here on the bench. Trying to find our identity as a group without those players has been difficult.”

    The most glaring absence is Overholt. As a junior he led the Chargers with 13 goals. Chatfield finished with a 12-4-1 record last year with Overholt leading the way.

    “Having Ben obviously helps the team. I hope we get him back soon,” McGrath said. “He is a goal-scoring kid. He had six goals before he went out. It’s a huge part of our team missing.”

    Blume said he hopes to get Overholt back this season, but admitted it’s a “wait-and-see” situation on how quickly his arm heals. The focus for Chatfield is to get on a winning streak in conference play after dropping a game in overtime last Tuesday to defending league champion Arvada West.

    “We’ve got to take care of our business,” Blume said. “That’s our goal on Monday and for the rest of league.”

    Chatfield gets back into its conference schedule Monday against Pomona. The Chargers face the Panthers at 6 p.m. at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada.

    Doherty has a quick turnaround. The Spartans host Highlands Ranch at 6 p.m. Saturday at Gerry Berry Stadium in Colorado Springs. It will be the fourth game in six days for Doherty.

    “This definitely boosts our confidence,” Shub said before his team headed back to Colorado Springs.

  • Football roundup: Obinnah helps Grandview outlast Eaglecrest in overtime

    Grandview’s Chukwuma Obinnah had a four-yard touchdown in overtime to lift the Wolves to a 34-27 overtime win against Eaglecrest on Friday night.

    Obinnah finished with 261 yards and five touchdowns on 39 carries.

    The night nearly belonged to Eaglecrest, which played the Wolves incredibly tight. The game was tied 7-7 at the half and Grandview led 14-13 after three quarters. The Wolves looked to have the game all but locked up when Obinnah made it 27-19 with 1:20 to play on his fourth touchdown.

    But Eaglecrest wouldn’t go quietly. Though a 65-yard touchdown pass at the start of the drive was called back on a penalty, Eaglecrest marched down to Grandview’s 14-yard-line with 12.1 seconds remaining. Then, the Raptors scored as time expired and converted a two-point conversion to tie the game at 27.

    That led to overtime, and Obinnah’s winning score.

    Grandview, ranked No. 3 in 5A, is now 5-0 to start the season.

    3A: D’Evelyn 34, Lewis-Palmer 33

    It seems we can’t go a week this season without updating the state record book in some fashion. Once again Friday, it was the single-game passing mark under assault.

    D’Evelyn quarterback Owen Burke threw for 535 yards and five touchdowns. That is now No. 5 all-time, and is the third time this season a quarterback has cracked the top-10. Holy Family quarterback Chris Helbig threw for 491 on Sept. 5, and Air Academy’s Adam Brown broke the state record last week by throwing for 589 yards.

    Meanwhile, Burke’s main target, Cameron Brown, had 316 receiving yards and caught all five scores. Both figures are tied for third-best in state history.

    Lewis-Palmer running back Charley Young, meanwhile, rushed for 331 yards and four touchdowns on 32 carries in the loss.

    When the night ended, the two teams had combined for 1,111 yards of total offense, which is now the eighth-most in state history.

    3A: (5) Rifle 36, (3) Delta 19

    Rifle jumped all over Delta early, leading 10-0 after the first quarter, and then cruised to the win.

    In fact, by the time Rifle led 16-0 midway through the second quarter, Delta didn’t yet have a first down, according to the Glenwood Springs Post-Independent.

    Rifle running back Brock Clark had three total touchdowns.

    “We had to fight for everything we got, so I’m extremely proud that, if we have to do that we were still able to score 36 points,” Rifle coach Damon Wells told the Post-Independent.

    2A: (4) Platte Valley 38, (5) Eaton 14

    The defending 2A champions notched an important league win over a rival on Friday.

    “Fantastic atmosphere,” Platte Valley coach Troy Hoffman Colorado Preps’ Scoreboard Show. “Football’s crazy. Anytime you’re playing such a big game, a rivalry game like this, and then also a league opener, it just added to the atmosphere and I’m very, very happy to come out on top tonight.”

    4A: (8) Greeley West 31, Greeley Central 14

    The Spartans are now 5-0 after going 1-9 last season.

    “Really, it started in December, just working in the offseason and changing our offense a little bit,” Greeley West coach Jason Renouf told the Scoreboard Show. “We really hit the weight room hard, and our kids have really bought into what we’re selling to them. It’s been great to be a part of.”

    6-man: (4) Peetz 42, (3) Fleming 28

    Peetz jumped out to a 28-0 lead at halftime and cruised from there.

    “I think we sent a message to everyone else in the conference that we’re to reckon with,” coach Scott Sorensen told the Scoreboard Show. “I know Pawnee’s got a really strong team; we still have Weldon Valley on our schedule, too. If we’re going to finish this out, we have to stay focused and play good football.”

    Peetz is now 4-1 this season.

    5A: (8) Cherry Creek 23, (9) Cherokee Trail 0

    The Bruins cruised out to a 17-0 lead midway through the second quarter and never looked back.

    Henry Lyon kicked three field goals — 48, 23 and 20 yards — Milo Hall had a 2-yard rushing touchdown, and Joseph Parker caught a 12-yard score.

    Cherry Creek improved to 3-2 this season. Cherokee Trail is also now 3-2.

    8-man: (4) Akron 20, (5) Merino 12

    The Rams won a physical top-10 game on Friday. Akron is now 5-0.

    “I knew going into the season that we were going to be young, but I knew were going to go have some talent,” Akron coach Jerome Weers told the Scoreboard Show. “I think to some extent, they’ve even exceeded at times my expectations. … They can play real well when they want to, and they play well as a group, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

    Notables

    • Two more running backs rushed for six touchdowns: Dakota Ridge’s Jeremy Lujan (who also had more than 300 yards), as well as Montrose’s Mike Rocha. They are the third and fourth players to do that this season.
    • Doherty running back TeQuan Baker went for 272 yards and four touchdowns in a 28-14 win over Castle View. Doherty is now 5-0.
    • Big plays: Sterling’s Ethan Rose hit Brennan Skerjanec on a 96-yard touchdown pass, and Longmont’s Ethan Gabrielle had a 92-yard score.
    • Columbine’s Jake Lowry threw four touchdowns in his team’s 56-35 win over Mullen. Yes, that’s correct. Surprisingly, though, that’s not a school record for the traditional rush-happy offense. That belongs to former Rebel great Danny Spond, who threw five against Thomas Jefferson in 2009. Still, Lowry’s performance even had former Columbine great and current Denver Broncos player Ryan Miller weighing in.
    • Adams City beat Aurora Central 24-21 and is now 4-1 for the first time since 2005, when the team actually started 4-0. The move to 4A has really helped the program. For perspective on the turnaround: Adams City won four total games from 2006-2013, going 4-76 over that span. One of those wins was a forfeit.
    • Air Academy had itself another wildly offensive game, and once again, the Kadets fell short. A week after losing 68-62 to Sand Creek, they lost 76-41 to Canon City. Canon City’s Trenton Stringari rushed for 255 yards and five touchdowns, according to the Canon City Daily Record. A week after breaking the state’s passing record, Air Academy quarterback Adam Brown threw for 352 yards and two touchdowns. Teammate Jalen Etsep had two kickoff returns for a score: 97 and 96 yards. Canon City’s Dacian Sullivan also had a kickoff return for a score (87 yards), part of a three touchdown night.
    • Mountain Vista moved to 5-0 with a 21-17 win over rival ThunderRidge. It is the first time in school history the Golden Eagles have won that game in nine tries. Vista quarterback Brock Rubley threw for 327 yards and two touchdowns, while Matt Yockey had 18 tackles and two sacks.
    • There were two instances where cross-town rivals played for the first time Friday: Longmont beat Silver Creek 42-21, while Chaparral beat Legend 33-30.
    • More rivalries: Heritage beat Arapahoe 23-14 for the Milk Can, while Harrison beat Sierra 25-9. It is Sierra’s first loss.
    • Green Mountain led Wheat Ridge 14-7 and 20-14 in the fourth quarter, but the Farmers rallied to take a 29-20 win.
    • In a game we previewed this week, No. 9 Berthoud moved to 5-0 with a 17-7 win over Erie in 3A.
    • Fountain-Fort Carson edged Douglas County 21-20 in overtime. FFC totally turned things around at halftime, when the Trojans were being shutout and had just one first down. Later, they rallied from down 13-7 with seven minutes to play.
    • Rangely topped Hayden in overtime, 20-14. Hayden made a goal-line stop to even get to overtime, but Rangely prevailed.
    • Palmer beat Sand Creek 35-28 in overtime to win on homecoming. Sand Creek tied the game with a touchdown in the final moments to force overtime.
    • Platte Canyon, No. 10 in 1A, beat Front Range Christian 29-0 to move to 4-1. “We preach that we’re going to try to improve every week,” Platte Canyon coach Mike Schmidt told the Scoreboard Show. “We’re young still, we’ve only got five seniors, so we feel like we’ve still got a long way to go, and a lot of improving to do.”
    • On its debut week in the 5A top-10, No. 10 Rocky Mountain beat Horizon 31-20.
    • In 3A, No. 8 Lamar beat No. 9 St. Mary’s 25-10.
    • Glenwood Springs upset 3A No. 10 Palisade, 17-10. It was sealed by a hard count which drew Palisade offside.
    • Hotchkiss knocked off 1A No. 7 Cedaredge, 27-13.

  • Kent Denver takes over as No. 1 in 3A boys soccer rankings

    Things are crazy in Class 3A boys soccer.

    Not only is there a new No. 1 team this week — Kent Denver — the classification got four new teams this week.

    Kent got five of the six first-place votes after going 2-0-0 last week to improve to 6-1-0.

    Meanwhile, Colorado Academy rejoined the poll this week — all the way at No. 2. CA went 3-0-0 last week, including wins over ranked opponents Faith Christian and Fountain Valley.

    Kent Denver and Colorado Academy play on Tuesday.

    Also joining the 3A ranking this week were No. 7 Sheridan, No. 9 Vanguard and No. 10 Jefferson Academy.

    The 5A poll added No. 5 Broomfield and No. 7 Doherty. Rock Canyon remained atop that ranking.

    In 4A, Skyline was the lone newcomer at No. 10, and Air Academy continued to be No. 1.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Turns out a win over a No. 1 team does help you move up to the top spot.

    Arickaree/Woodlin, No. 2 in CHSAANow’s 6-man football poll last week, moved up to No. 1 this week following its 60-30 win over Stratton/Liberty on Friday night.

    Coach David Saffer was expecting the move after the game on Friday.

    "We’ve got a target on our backs," he told Colorado Preps’ Scoreboard Show. "We’ve just got to stay focused and keep working."

    Saffer’s squad was the only new No. 1 team this week. Valor Christian (5A), Pine Creek (4A), Lutheran (3A), Brush (2A), Paonia (1A) and Dayspring Christian (8-man) all held firm atop their respective rankings.

    Valor held on to the top spot despite its loss to Chandler (Ariz.). But the Eagles are no longer a unanimous selection: they received 13 of the 18 first-place votes this week.

    No. 2 Pomona, No. 3 Grandview and No. 4 Ralston Valley — which got three — also received first-place votes in 5A this week. Fairview rounds out the top five after bumping up one spot.

    Regis Jesuit is sixth, Cherry Creek fell to seventh following its loss to Jordan (Utah), Overland moved up to eighth and Cherokee Trail fell to No. 9 after losing to Regis Jesuit. Doherty is the lone newcomer in 5A this week, and joins at No. 10.

    Among the biggest movers this week was Fort Collins, which jumped up from No. 9 to No. 5 in the 4A poll following its win over Windsor last week.

    The 4A ranking added Pueblo Centennial (No. 10), 3A added Berthoud (also No. 10) and St. Mary’s joined 2A (No. 9). In 1A, newcomer Rye is No. 10, and 6-man has two new teams this week: No. 9 Hanover and No. 10 Weldon Valley.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Notebook: Fairview football has record day in opening win at Grand Junction

    Fairview’s offense was supposed to take a hit after graduating its quarterback and three leading receivers. Right?

    Yeah, right.

    The Knights, ranked No. 7 in this week’s poll, not only picked up right where they left off last Saturday, they expanded upon what last year’s near-record setting offense did on its way to football’s Class 5A championship game last season.

    Led by senior Johnny Feauto, their “new” quarterback — more on that later — Fairview racked up 510 passing yards and 712 yards of total offense in its 58-28 win at Grand Junction.

    The passing yards now rank No. 3 in the state record book, while the total offense is No. 10.

    Here’s what’s scary: Fairview trailed Grand Junction 14-0 after the first quarter.

    Last season, Anders Hill and Feauto combined to throw for 4,005 yards. It was only the third time in state history that a program had surpassed the 4,000-yard mark in passing. But Hill, now at Columbia, accounted for 3,878 of that — which is No. 4 all-time in state history for a single season.

    Still, Feauto didn’t come out of nowhere. As a sophomore, he played in six games in relief of an injured Hill and threw for 2,316 yards and 21 touchdowns. In fact, his 414 yards on Saturday are just the third-most of Feauto’s career. He had outputs of 433 and 429 yards as a sophomore.

    With a fully-healthy Hill back last season, Feauto focused on his role at cornerback and had six interceptions — including two in the semifinals against ThunderRidge.

    Anyway, on Saturday, Feauto also had 122 rushing yards. That put his total output at 536 yards, which is now No. 7 all-time.

    So this offense, despite losing guys like Hill, Sam Martin, Cam Frazier and Owen Harris, is still very potent. Because of Feauto, and because of other guys like Thomas Creese — who threw for the other 96 passing yards on Saturday — Carlo Kemp (two rushing touchdowns), David McWilliams (202 receiving yards, two touchdowns), Connor May (94 receiving yards, two touchdowns), Tim Ryan (109 all-purpose yards) and Steve D’Epagnier (41 receiving yards).

    If anything, they’re just upholding tradition. Historically, Fairview has had one of the state’s best offenses.

    The Knights own the Nos. 3 and 4 total marks for passing yards in a season. In addition to the 2013 mark of 4,005 yards, the program threw for 3,977 in 2002. Fairview also sits Nos. 1 and 2 in the record books for passes attempted and completed by a team in a season. And Martin, now at Miami of Ohio, holds the state records for catches (112) and receiving yards (1,860) in a season.

    Jefferson Academy’s Kupcho plays well at Colorado Women’s Open

    Jefferson Academy senior Jennifer Kupcho, last season’s Class 4A girls golf champion, finished tied for second at the Colorado Women’s Open last weekend. She finished at 1-under (215) over the three-day event, and actually held the lead after the first day at 6-under.

    Kupcho was the top-placing amateur of the event.

    “It’s really exciting to finish that high up in a pro tournament,” she told BoCoPreps afterward.

    • Colorado’s mark on Wyoming football program has long been undeniable, but that seems extra true this season. Two Colorado products have been named captains of Wyoming’s football team: Grandview grad Eddie Yarbrough (a defensive end) and Palmer grad Dominic Rufran (a wide receiver). Rufran will start at wide receiver — along with former Grandview star Tanner Gentry. In all, 20 products of Colorado high schools are on Wyomong’s roster — including four 2014 grads. By comparison, CSU has 40 Colorado products on its roster this season and CU has 26.
    • Christian McCaffrey, who graduated from Valor Christian in May after an outstanding athletic career, had an electric debut for Stanford football on Saturday. We are all well aware of McCaffrey’s versatility — his 8,839 all-purpose yards are a state record — and he showed it in the Cardinal’s win against UC Davis. He had this 52-yard touchdown reception — the first of his career — and a 44-yard punt return. McCaffrey had one rush for 10 yards, the 52 receiving yards, returned three punts for 60 yards, and was even on kickoff coverage. Said Stanford offensive coordinator Mike Bloombgren to sfgate.com: “Nah, that didn’t surprise me. I’m not sure he’ll be able to do anything to surprise me anymore.”
    • 2014 Falcon graduate Kalen Ballage also scored a touchdown in his debut for Arizona State last week. He finished with 37 yards on 12 attempts. Still, Ballage told the Arizona Republic, “I definitely want to be better. Now that I hit the ground running and got the first game out of the way, I’ll be able to just play.”
    • 2010 Rocky Mountain graduate Marco Gonzales picked up his first MLB win on Saturday. “It feels pretty rewarding,” Gonzales told MLB.com afterward. He made his debut in June. 
    • Another recent addition to football’s record book: Holy Family just recently submitted the career (2011-13) numbers for former quarterback David Sommers. His 8,326 yards of total offense are No. 10 all-time.
    • Former Pine Creek setter Rory McCloy was named the NJCAA Division I national player of the week last week. Now at Laramie County Community College in Wyoming, she had 175 assists in her team’s first four matches — and averaged 10.9 per set. She’s currently leading the nation in assists with 345.
    • Jefferson Academy alum Ally Thimsen, a 2014 graduate, was named the Big Sky offensive player of the week after recording two goals and an assist in one game.

  • Notebook: Hubbard starts new challenge with Lutheran football

    Perhaps no football coaching change this offseason was as major as Blair Hubbard leaving Faith Christian for Lutheran.

    Hubbard won three state championships in 15 seasons as head coach at Faith Christian, a perennial power in the Class 2A ranks. His teams were 148-30, made the playoffs 14 times and won 10 league titles.

    But in the offseason Hubbard was looking to tackle something new. Lutheran — a 3A team since the school was formed by a merger of the old Denver Lutheran and Lutheran-Parker schools prior to the 2012 season — was a fit.

    Hubbard was hired on Feb. 20.

    “I was just kind of looking for a new challenge, so when the opportunity presented itself I took some time to think about it, talked it over with my wife and some other wise council and decided to go ahead,” Hubbard said. “This was a good opportunity to make the change. I’m excited about this season and just the future of Lutheran High School football in general.”

    Faith Christian moved quickly to hire Ralph Nance, Hubbard’s defensive coordinator, as his successor. It meant that Hubbard’s staff — which had been together for “over 10 years,” he said — was not going to stay intact.

    “I’ve hired a completely new staff,” Hubbard said. “That was a specific challenge. And it was a good process.”

    Hubbard’s new staff at Lutheran comprises 10 assistants — five of whom are in the building.

    “I feel very comfortable with the coaches that we have on staff,” Hubbard said. “We’ve just got a good cohesiveness together. Everybody’s on the same page and is there for the same reason. We’re there to help build young men into men, boys into men. We’re not there necessarily for the wins and the losses. If we do our jobs, those kinds of things will hopefully take care of themselves. Our purpose is to have an effect in young men’s lives.”

    Lutheran was 31-11 in former coach Daryl Moe’s four seasons, including three playoff appearances. So Hubbard is inheriting a great program.

    Included are quarterback James Willis and receiver Josh Clausen, both seniors and four-year varsity members, who combined for more than 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns through the air last season.

    Willis, entering his third year as the starter at quarterback, threw for 2,306 yards and 24 touchdowns last season.

    “He’s someone that’s just a humble leader, he’s a hard worker,” Hubbard said. “That’s the kind of athlete we’re looking to model our program after. Someone’s that just has that blue-collar work ethic and is humble and willing to help other kids out along the way.”

    Clausen already has 2,312 receiving yards in his three seasons, which is just outside the top-10 in the state’s career record book.

    “He’s (6-foot-4) and he’s got very good speed and great hands,” Hubbard said. “He’s getting some looks from some of the area Division I schools, so it’s exciting to work with him. He’s got that same kind of work ethic that we’re looking for, as well.”

    A group of linemen also return.

    “They have been very consistent in the weight room, and whenever you’ve got the kids up front that are dedicated to spending time in the weight room, you’re going to have a good opportunity to win some battles up front,” Hubbard said.

    Lutheran opens the season in Houston, playing at Lutheran South Academy — a Division II school in Texas which went 8-3 and made the playoffs last season. It’s an opportunity for everyone to get to know one another really well, really quick.

    “It will be a fun experience for the kids and for the coaches,” Hubbard said. “There’s a lot of logistics involved and we’ve gotten a lot of outstanding administrative support from the school.

    “They’re of the mindset that they’re there for the athletes and the athletic program and want to do as much as they can to help the young men and women out in the athletic programs to have a great experience in their time at Lutheran.”

    Short stuff

    • During its transition to a regional program, the former Montbello High School athletic department will be known as the Warriors (Montbello). Eventually, the plan is to simply call the teams the Warriors — without including the Montbello clarifier.
    • Last week at the All-School Summit, a new approach to the classification structure was discussed. Every impression I’ve gotten seems like this is where the state will head this fall — though there was some resistance voiced during the classification breakout session at the Summit. We’ll see if that initial uneasiness turns into action ahead of CLOC’s November meeting.
    • Valor Christian’s Eric Lee Jr. and Pine Creek’s Avery Anderson, both defensive backs, will enroll at Nebraska early, the school announced.
    • Regis Jesuit offensive linemen Tim Lynott’s father tweeted out his official offer letter from Colorado. Lynott is a CU commit, and was recently moved up to a 4-star recruit by Scout.com.
    • Here’s a neat picture of Windsor’s football team playing in a flooded field near its school during storms last week. (Coach Chris Jones was quick to urge safety to his players: “Be smart about the water in front of the school,” he tweeted.)
    • Brighton pitcher/shortstop Conner Reynolds committed to Northern Colorado for baseball last week.
    • Tony Ramunno had been the head football coach at Lewis-Palmer for 25 seasons, but he resigned late last month. “I really like Friday nights; it’s probably the best job a guy can have in the country,” he told the Colorado Springs Gazette. Former defensive coordinator Dustin Tupper will replace him.
    • Moffatt County hired longtime coach Keith Gille to head its football program, according to the Craig Daily Press.
    • Grandview hired Patrick Chapla as its boys lacrosse coach. He had been an assistant at Mountain Vista, and is also a club coach at 3d Lacrosse. “We are excited to add his passion, experience and love of the game to our program,” Grandview athletic director Jamee Ulitzky wrote in an email.
    • Smoky Hill hired Robert Kennedy as baseball coach, according to the Aurora Sentinel.
    • Eagle Ridge has a new girls basketball coach, according to the Brighton Blade: Vern Rathbun, who has been coaching for more than 30 years.
    • The numbers from the NFHS Network are in from the past school year, and the most popular events were as follows: Arapahoe-Fossil Ridge boys basketball in the 5A tournament; Overland-Denver East boys basketball in the 5A tournament; and the state track meet.
    • It seems like this is a weekly occurrence now, but here’s another reminder to kids that how you act on social media can have a very negative effect on your recruitment.
    • Englewood’s getting a new turf field.
    • Cherry Creek’s gym is “getting a major upgrade.”
    • Fruita Monument wrestler Jacob Seely earned All-American status with his seventh-place finish at a national tournament in Fargo, North Dakota last month.

    • Heritage alum Shane Opitz, now playing minor league baseball, was interviewed by the Dunedin Blue Jays’ radio network about a recent rehab of an injury, but also spoke about hailing from Colorado. “There’s a lot of talent coming out of Colorado, but people don’t necessarily recognize that because we don’t play year-round,” Opitz said. “There’s not a lot of good weather during the winter time, we’re under snow. But there’s a lot of talent.” A 2010 grad, he’s hitting .280 at Dunedin in 13 games so far this season.
    • Chaparral alum Shane Callahan has been cleared to play immediately for CU following his transfer from Auburn. Here he is in a video speaking with the media after practice. “I’m proud to wear Colorado on my jersey, this is my hometown,” he said. “Excited to have the chance to play for my home state this year!” he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.
    • Kalen Ballage, a 2013 Falcon graduate, is “turning heads” as Arizona State opens football camp. Coach Todd Graham said he’s “the most impressive freshman running back we’ve ever had. Ever.”
    • Bobby Dalbec, who graduated from Legend in 2013, tore it up at the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer. He had five home runs and 18 RBIs in just 29 games, and hit .228. He also took part in the home run contest during All-Star festivities. Dalbec just completed his freshman season as the starting designated hitter/first baseman and reliever at Arizona. He hit .266 with two home runs and 30 RBIs for the Wildcats, and also had a team-best 2.13 ERA in 22 appearances. Dalbec did tell the Arizona Daily Star that his future is as a position player: “If we really need a guy to be a starter, I’d obviously do it. But I like my future after Arizona to be with the bat. I’m not real big on pitching. I do it and compete, but I prefer to be in the box.”
    • 2003 Golden graduate Mark Melancon, a three-sport star in high school, returned to Colorado as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates late last month, and picked up a save at Coors Field. It was the third save he’d gotten against the Rockies in nine days. “Always fun playing on the field I grew up dreaming of playing on as a Big Leaguer,” Melancon tweeted.
    • This was neat: Former Grandview boys basketball star Eric Garcia pointed out that he (now at Wofford), Denver East alum Dom Collier (CU) and former Regis Jesuit player Josh Perkins (Gonzaga) will all be on national television at the same time during the college basketball season.
