The Classical Academy has taken over the top spot of the Class 4A CHSAANow.com soccer rankings. Broomfield and Kent Denver held on to their respective No. 1 positions in 5A and 3A.
The Titans came into the season with more returning talent than any team in 4A and have had their sights set on a state championship since day one. It appears that an early-season loss to Cheyenne Mountain hasn’t fazed them and they are now regarded as the top team in the state.
Also in 4A, Battle Mountain joined the rankings at No. 7 and Skyline made a jump from No. 5 to No. 2.
In 5A, Monarch (No. 6) and Cherry Creek (No. 10) join the rankings this week. Fairview made an impress jump from No. 6 to No. 2 and are barking at the heels of their area rival, Broomfield, for the top spot.
DSST-Stapleton and Fountain Valley are both back in the 3A top 10 after dropping out in recent weeks.
KIPP, Liberty Common and Vail Mountain each jumped three spots to land at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

MONUMENT — If there was any worry about Palmer Ridge being stuck in the playoff bubble, they may have impressively popped it Friday night with a convincing 45-21 win over Rampart at Don Breese Stadium.
On paper, the game should’ve been a close battle between two teams looking to make their argument to play beyond the final week of the regular season. Instead, the Class 4A No. 8 ranked Bears (5-1 overall, 1-0 4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) left little doubt in anyone’s mind who the better team was.
“We have to take it one game at a time,” Bears coach Tom Pulford said. “Looking back last year at our loss to Rampart, that was an ingredient that kept us out of the playoffs.”
For the Rams (4-2, 0-1) the task of limiting the damage that Palmer Ridge quarterback Isaiah Sanders could inflict was priority number one, but it appeared to be a task easier said than done as his four touchdown passes paced the Palmer Ridge offense.
He was able to to manipulate the Rams defense and take advantage of several Rampart mistakes, including a 15-yard facemask call on the Bears’ second drive of the game. That helped Sanders find receiver George Silvanic for a six-yard touchdown pass.
The Bears missed the extra point, but held the early lead, putting pressure on a Rams defense that was without arguably their most effective weapon in wide receiver Clayton Hacker, who missed the game due to a high-ankle sprain.
“Clayton’s a game changer,” Rams coach Rob Royer said. “He’s big time player for us and losing him is always tough.”
A 34-yard field goal from Grayson Matalus and a touchdown run by Collin Ambrose helped the Bears establish a comfortable 17-0 lead over the Rams. Sanders found Silvanic for another touchdown pass, this one from 10 yards out to push the lead to 24-0 at halftime.
“That’s a good football team and they played a great second half against Discovery Canyon last week,” Pulford said. “We knew they would be in it to the bitter end, those guys keeping grinding. They never give up.”
The struggles continued early into the second half for the Rams. The offense had no rhythm and the line was having a hard time protecting quarterback Parker Humphrey. A long pass from Sanders to Matalus helped set up a one-yard touchdown run from Trevor Grob all but closed the door on the night for Rampart.
Late in the third quarter, the Rams were able to finally put some offense together and drive down the field and into the red zone for the first time. Humphrey found receiver Joey Williams, but the two-point conversion failed.
Sanders would later add a 40-yard touchdown pass to Grob to put the exclamation point on the win. Humphrey would find Williams again, this time from 25 yards out to pull the score to 38-14, but the Rams just didn’t have enough time to generate a comeback, falling 45-21.
“It felt good, the offense was doing good things,” Sanders said. “They don’t call (the game) early so you have to keep playing until it hits zero.”
The Bears will take to the road next week as they head for a league game against Durango. The Rams will return home to District 20 Stadium next week in hopes of getting their first win of the season as they host Air Academy.
“One thing I’ll tell you about these kids is that they work hard every day,” Royer said. “They have great character, they have a lot of grit and they fought hard this game. We just couldn’t get it done.”

Broomfield is back on top of the Class 5A soccer rankings.
The Eagles, No. 1 earlier in the season, got five of the 10 first-place votes to return to the top of CHSAANow.com’s poll.
ThunderRidge remained at No. 2, and Boulder, the former No. 1, dropped to third. Arvada West and Fort Collins round out the top-5.
Evergreen (4A) and Kent Denver (3A) remained atop their respective rankings.
In 4A, Longmont (No. 8) and Steamboat Springs (No. 10) joined the poll.
The 3A ranking added Liberty Common (No. 6) and Peak to Peak (No. 10).
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

Buena Vista has taken over the top spot of the CHSAANow.com Class 1A football rankings following their 53-12 win over Centauri and former No. 1 Paonia’s 35-0 loss against Bayfield.
The Demons are the only new No. 1 seed after a week filled with few upsets.
Cherry Creek remains in the top spot of 5A as the Bruins had a bye this week. They traveled to Utah two weeks ago where they beat Jordan 38-35. They return to the field Friday night to take on Cherokee Trail.
After dropping out of the 5A rankings last week, Grandview is back in the poll at No. 9. Columbine remains at No. 2 after beating Ralston Valley 21-7 Thursday night. The Mustangs, ranked No. 3 last week, fell four slots following their loss.
In 4A, Pine Creek remains No. 1 after drubbing Pueblo West 47-7 Saturday. But the first time this season, they were not voted there unanimously.

The Vista Ridge Wolves gained two first-place votes after an impressive 40-28 win over Palmer Ridge, who stays in this week’s poll at No. 10. Vista Ridge is now No. 2, and faces Pine Creek on Friday.
There were no new teams that joined the 4A rankings.
Pueblo East is still the top team in 3A, although half the first-place votes went to other teams. The Eagles needed plenty of offense to get by Discovery Canyon Friday night. They took the game 47-36.
D’Evelyn returned to the 3A poll after falling out two weeks ago. They got a much-needed 49-30 win over Pueblo County Friday night.
Kent Denver remains the team to beat in 2A after they shut out Ridgeview Academy 40-0. Bayfield leapt over La Junta for the No. 2 slot after its big win over Paonia.
A 28-7 win over Roaring Fork got Gunnison back in the rankings at No. 10. The Cowboys are the only 2A newcomers this week.
In 1A, Buena Vista takes over the top spot with Resurrection Christian coming in at No. 2 and only trail the Demons by a single point in the voting.
Previously unranked Limon made the biggest jump this week as they land at No. 7.
There wasn’t a lot of movement in the 8-man rankings, but Hoehne does join the poll this week at No. 10.
There were no newcomers to 6-man, although Hanover (No. 6) and Peetz (No. 7) each moved up one slot from last week.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

Mullen, Arapahoe and Heritage all climbed into this week’s CHSAANow.com football rankings after impressive wins over the weekend.
The Mustangs are No. 6 in Class 5A this week, while Arapahoe is No. 8 and Heritage is No. 9.
Cherry Creek remained the No. 1 team in 5A, getting 17 of the 18 first-place votes. Pomona dropped from No. 2 to No. 7 in Class 5A, following a stunning loss to Mullen. The Panthers held a 11-point lead in the third quarter but couldn’t hang on. As a result, Columbine takes over the No. 2 spot this week.
Ralston Valley moved up behind the Rebels and is No. 3. Valor Christian sits at No. 4, and Regis Jesuit rounds out the top-5.
Cherokee Trail is the No. 10 team in 5A this week.

In 4A, Pine Creek once again received every first-place vote after they made a statement in their win over then-No. 3 Dakota Ridge on Thursday.
But it was Vista Ridge and quarterback Elway Tubbs that turned heads this week as they trounced then-No. 7 Ponderosa 57-35 Friday night. The Wolves leapt from No. 5 to No. 3 with a date with Pine Creek still on the horizon.
The Western Slope added two teams this week as Montrose comes in at No. 9 while Durango makes an appearance at No. 10.
The record-breaking numbers that Holy Family put up in the previous two weeks came to a halt as they were topped by Palisade in a big 3A matchup. The Bulldogs jumped from No. 5 to No. 3 as a result and even garnered a firs-place vote. Holy Family fell to No. 6.
Pueblo East remained No. 1 in 3A this week. Conifer was the lone newcomer in this week’s 3A poll.
A 49-7 win over Denver West keeps Kent Denver in firm position atop the 2A rankings. But La Junta received a huge surge in votes after scoring 27 points off turnovers in a 33-14 win over Eaton. The Tigers jumped from No. 6 to No. 2.
They are joined in the 2A rankings by Sterling (No. 7), The Academy (No. 9), and Alameda (No. 10).
The top three spots in 1A remained intact, including No. 1 Paonia. Resurrection Christian garnered three first-place votes after an impressive 42-6 win over Platte Canyon.
Center is the lone newcomer in 1A at No. 10.
The 10 teams in the 8-man poll remain the same, but the order changed slightly thanks to Merino’s win over Granada. The Bobcats fell from No. 4 to No. 8 and the Rams jumped one spot to No. 5.
Dayspring Christian remained No. 1 in 8-man.
Cheraw and Le Veta played their way into the 6-man rankings, coming in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. Fleming held on to the top spot in that poll.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.
