DENVER — Only two games into the spring baseball season Ralston Valley might have already found its late-inning pitcher.

Sophomore Tyler Phillips took the mound with two outs and the Mustangs clinging to a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning Saturday afternoon at Coors Field. Smoky Hill was threatening to tie the game with a runner on second base, but Phillips forced senior JR McDermott to ground out to third base to end the inning.

“In our intersquad and scrimmages he (Phillips) has kind of established himself as that role,” Ralston Valley’s first-year coach Robby Bales said after the Mustangs held on for a 5-3 victory. “When Smoky Hill hit the double to cut it to one run we decided to use him right then. He is a kid who has ice in his veins.”

Phillips retired all seven batters he faced to pick up the save. He struck out four and ended the game when Buffaloes’ senior Ryan Kim grounded back to Phillips for the final out of the seventh inning.

“I just had confidence in him (Phillips),” Ralston Valley senior catcher Gavin Schack said. “We’ve worked all off-season with him. Even thou he is a sophomore it really doesn’t matter. We are all a team here.”

Schack helped provide an insurance run for Ralston Valley (2-0 overall) going to the bottom of the seventh inning. The senior drove a double into right-center field to lead off the top of the seventh inning. Courtesy runner Thomas Linton scored on a throwing error to give the Mustangs a 5-3 cushion.

“I just cleared my head and didn’t really think about anything,” Schack said of his double.

Schack also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning that pushed Ralston Valley’s lead to 4-0. Smoky Hill (2-2) rallied with RBIs by juniors Parker Friedentag and Cal Stevens in the bottom of the fourth inning off Ralston Valley starting pitcher Reed Hutchin to cut the lead in half.

Hutchin picked up the victory going four innings giving up two runs on four hits while striking out four.

“Reed is our horse. He has a heavy ball and command of three pitches,” Bales said. “We would have extended him a little longer if we were later in the season.”

Lefty Joe Millar took the mound for Ralston Valley in the bottom of the fifth inning. After a leadoff walk, Millar got two straight outs. However, senior Justin Martinez ripped an RBI double to cut the Mustangs’ lead to 4-3.

“(Smoky Hill) is a scrappy team, it would have been easy for them to fold in the beginning. We came out hot,” Bales said. “In the end we had to get some good relief out of the bullpen.”

Ralston Valley’s Don Sherman, Josh Robinson and Hutchin cranked out back-to-back-to-back hits in the top of the first inning to give the Mustangs an early 2-0 lead. Robinson drove in senior Caleb Squire with an RBI single in the third inning to extend the lead to 3-0. Schack’s sacrifice fly scored Peter Carlson in the fourth inning for a 4-0 lead.

“It fun and a good experience. Once in a lifetime,” Hutchin said of playing at Coors Field.

The win also extended the Mustangs’ string of never losing a game at Coors Field.

Ralston Valley heads out of town for spring break. The Mustangs will play in the Chris Moon Tournament in Tucson, Arizona from March 24-27.

“It’s so early in the season. The fact that we play five games in four days allows us to see what our depth looks like,” Bales said. “It will give a chance for guys who haven’t had much playing time to show why they are varsity players.”

Smoky Hill gets right into its Class 5A Centennial League schedule at Eaglecrest on March 24. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.

Defending champions are on top of three of CHSAANow.com’s four preseason girls soccer rankings. The fourth? Well, it’s a new classification this season.

Columbine (5A), Cheyenne Mountain (4A) and Colorado Academy (3A) are all coming off of titles last season, and all opened the year at No. 1 when the poll was released on Monday.

Front Range Christian leads the first-ever 2A poll. The Falcons made the 3A state tournament field last season.

In 5A, Columbine got four of the 10 first-place votes to edge No. 2 Mountain Vista. Mountain Vista, Rock Canyon (No. 3) and Pine Creek (No. 5) each received two first-place votes.

Ralston Valley, last year’s runner-up, is No. 4 in 5A’s preseason poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

  • Smoky Hill hires Trahan as football coach

Smoky Hill has hired John Trahan as its new football coach, athletic director Preston Davis said on Thursday.

Trahan had been the coach at Montbello from 2010-13, where he was 14-27 in four seasons. In 2013, his Warriors went 7-4 in Class 4A and lost to eventual state runner-up Montrose 31-25 in the first round of the playoffs.

He replaces Davis as coach at Smoky Hill, though Davis was only coach on an interim basis last season after the school changed coaches just prior to the season.

Smoky Hill went 3-7 last season in 5A, and missed the playoffs.

The Buffaloes return a very young roster. Key contributors at quarterback, running back and receiver were sophomores or juniors last season.

ARVADA — Arvada West senior Thomas Neff brought his entire toolbox of offensive moves to the Wildcats’ boys basketball opener Tuesday night.

Neff, who is already committed to play at the University of Denver, scored a game-high 35 points in almost every way imaginable against Smoky Hill at Arvada West High School.

“I’ve worked a lot on my post moves and in the weight room to get bigger so my post moves will be effective,” said Neff, who has grown five inches and put on 50 pounds over the past three years. “I wanted to be more than just a spot-up shooter like I was my freshman year.”

The 6-foot-5 senior drove to the hoop, posted up, hit fade-away jumpers, pull-up jumpers in transition and even buried a trio of 3-pointers to guide A-West, ranked No. 8 in the CHSAANow.com Class 5A preseason poll, to a 64-48 victory.

“Thomas was terrific,” said A-West coach Jeff Parriott of his returning third team all-state player. “We did a nice job getting him the ball in spots where he is hard to guard. He is hard to guard anywhere, but he is partially hard to guard when he gets close to the rim.”

Smoky Hill hung with the Wildcats through the first two quarters. The Buffaloes only trailed 25-21 at halftime, but A-West took over in the third quarter outscoring Smoky Hill 20-6.

“I thought the first half we were solid on defense, but (Smoky Hill) hit some 3-pointers at the end of a few possessions,” Parriott said. “I think our kids played really well defensively during that stretch (third quarter).”

A-West took its biggest lead of 57-31 midway through the fourth quarter when senior Jesse Porter nailed a 3-pointer. Seconds later Neff took a seat on the bench for the remainder of the game with 4:05 left in the fourth quarter.

“It’s exciting. I’m glad to play with my brother (Luke) for the last first game (of the season),” said Neff, who also grabbed 10 rebounds. “We had a good crowd. It was a good way to open the season.”

Porter finished with seven points for the Wildcats. Senior Zach Kuhlmann and junior Will Wittman had six points each in the victory.

While A-West’s opener was impressive. There is the looming addition to the lineup of 6-foot-11 junior Dallas Walton. The transfer from Ralston Valley is still recovering from knee surgery last June.

“I know he (Walton) is a difference maker. I’m excited to find out what he does when he gets healthy,” Parriott said. “We aren’t going to rush it. We are shooting for the middle of January, but we’ll see what happens.”

A-West gets right back out on the court Wednesday. The Wildcats travel to Northglenn High School for a 6 p.m. tipoff tomorrow against the Norsemen. Northglenn began its season Monday with a 66-55 victory over Castle View. The Wildcats’ next home game won’t be until just before winter break on Dec. 19 against George Washington.

“I think it will be good for this team,” Parriott said of A-West its next seven games on the road. “It will help us develop some toughness playing on the road and facing some adversity.”

Senior Dalontae Kelly led the Buffaloes with 24 points in the loss Tuesday. Kelly poured in four 3-pointers. His strong second quarter helped Smoky Hill get within striking distance before A-West pulled away in the second half.

Smoky Hill remains on the road when it faces ThunderRidge on Tuesday, Dec. 9. The Buffaloes get on their home court when they host their own three-day tournament starting Thursday, Dec. 11.

    CHSAA regional seeding/pairing procedure

    1. All league champions will automatically earn a berth to regionals.

    2. The remaining teams (up to 36) will be selected based on the MaxPreps Rankings published at the end of the regular season.

    3. Teams will then be seeded on the CHSAA regional seeding criteria:

    • The MaxPreps rankings will be the primary consideration
    • The CHSAA Seeding Committee will only make changes based on splitting up league opponents and geographical considerations (if and when possible)

    4. Teams seeded Nos. 1-12 will host regionals.

    5. All regional winners will automatically advance to the state champions
