(3) Windsor 20, (11) Palmer Ridge 14 (OT)
For much of the afternoon, Palmer Ridge looked like it might pull off the upset. But Windsor quarterback Brad Peeples had a 52-yard run in the fourth quarter to tie the game.
The two teams went to overtime, where the Windsor defense forced a turnover and the offense secured the win on Jake Shields’ touchdown.
“After last year’s second-round loss, I told the boys, ‘The sun will come up tomorrow,’” Windsor coach Chris Jones told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show after the game. “And today’s speech was, ‘The sun came up. It’s tomorrow. It’s our moment.’ They just had faith that they were going to get it done no matter what.”
After Shields scored, “It was a great moment of euphoria for all of our fans, our players, our coaches,” Jones said.
Palmer Ridge led 14-7 at halftime, and it stayed that way until Peeples’ touchdown.
“We had a lot of ups and downs to overcome early in the game and in the third quarter,” Jones said. “It was a very gut-wrenching game there at the end there.”
The Wizards get a rematch with Longmont. The two teams played a tight defensive battle during the regular season, which ended in a Hail Mary score to give Longmont a win.

(2) Longmont 48, (10) Denver South 14
The Trojans absolutely rolled in the quarterfinals, to the tune of a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and 35-7 at the half.
Longmont’s Conlan Berger rushed for two touchdowns and also had a receiving score, while Eli Sullivan returned two interceptions for touchdowns, and also added a four-yard rushing score.
In addition, Ethan Gabrielle had a rushing TD, and David Speidel threw a touchdown.

(4) Fort Morgan 21, (5) Palisade 0
Anthony Arroyo, Toby McBride and Tate Kembel each had rushing touchdowns as the Mustangs moved to the semifinals. It was 14-0 at halftime.
Fort Morgan is now 12-0 this season.
“We just didn’t give up the big plays,” Fort Morgan coach Harrison Chisum told the Scoreboard Show. “We were able to be aggressive yet disciplined on their counters. A lot of the end-arounds, we were able to set the edge.”
The Mustangs will play at defending champion Pueblo East in the semifinals.

(2) Roosevelt 42, (7) Evergreen 19
Roosevelt built a big lead early in cruising to the semifinals. The Roughriders led 14-0 after the first quarter and 28-6 at half. It was 42-6 after three.
Carlos Ortega had two rushing touchdowns, and a receiving score for Roosevelt. Cameron Hurtado added two passing touchdowns, and also rushed for one.
“Our guys showed up to play today, and I think the scoreboard shows it,” Roosevely coach Noland Eastin told the Scoreboard Show. “It doesn’t get any easier, but it’s a good way to end a good week of practice.”
Roosevelt will face Delta in the semifinals at home.

(1) Pueblo East 28, (8) Discovery Canyon 10
Quarterback Daniel Martin had three rushing touchdowns, Bryson Torres also scored, and the defending champions returned to the semifinals.
The game was a rematch of a regular season game, also won by Pueblo East.
Pueblo East will be home in the semifinals.
(3) Delta 27, (6) The Classical Academy 14
Delta trailed 14-13 at halftime, but rallied to secure a spot in the semifinals.
Kole Roberts gave his team the lead for good with a 1-yard touchdown in the third quarter, and then the quarterback found Tristan Brown for an insurance score in the fourth quarter.
Brown also had a rushing touchdown, while Jayce Hall returned a fumble for a score for Delta.

(1) Bayfield 47, (4) La Junta 7
This game was close at halftime — Bayfield led just 13-7 — but the Wolverines pulled away to move to the championship game.
Bayfield scored 34 unanswered points in the second half in winning.
“We knew that it was going to be a battle. It was 13-7 at the half. So we knew they were a tough team, that we just had to put our hats on,” coach Gary Heide told the Scoreboard Show.
Of the second half, Heide said, “We came out on defense, played well … and then we drove the ball down and scored. … When we scored, I knew that we were here to play the second half.”
Kelton McCoy threw four touchdowns and rushed for two more in leading Bayfield to the win. Brody McGhehey was on the receiving end of two of those scores.
Wyatt Freier and Taed Heydinger each had a receiving touchdown, while Zane Phelps scored on the ground.
Bayfield was last in a championship game in 2011, when it lost to Florence.
(3) Platte Valley 29, (2) Kent Denver 23
Platte Valley, down 17-0 in the second quarter and 23-7 at halftime, had a furious rally to reach the title game.

(3) Paonia 21, (2) Resurrection Christian 15
The Eagles rallied late to earn a chance at defending their championship yet again.
Paonia, which is a two-time defending champion, got a touchdown from Jeremiah Hillman with 3:06 to play, then got a late interception to seal the win.
“It was third down, and we just ran a little off-tackle play, and Jeremiah Hillman just buried it in,” Paonia coach Brent McRae told the Scoreboard Show.
The win sets up a rematch with Buena Vista for the 1A title. The championship game will be in Buena Vista.
“We’re pretty familiar with each other in the postseason,” McRae said. “It’s going to be very interesting, a very competitive ballgame.”
(1) Buena Vista 42, (5) Crowley County 0
The top seed rolled into the championship game, which it will host next weekend.
“The score doesn’t do the game justice. It was a pretty hard-fought battle. It was 14-0 at half,” Buena Vista coach Matt Flavin told the Scoreboard Show. “But we got the win, and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters.”
Keenan Barr had two rushing touchdowns and a defensive score, and Keegan Wentz also scored twice on the ground.
Of the rematch with Paonia, Flavin said, “Those guys, the last few years, have just been the dominant team. … I hope we can rise to that occasion.”

(1) Sedgwick County 50, (4) Sargent 8
The Cougars led 20-0 after the first quarter and 42-0 at halftime in rolling to the championship game.
“We got a couple of quick scores, and that always helps,” Sedgwick County coach Chris Michel told the Scoreboard Show.
This marks the first appearance in a title game for the Sedgwick County football co-op, which is comprised of Julesburg and Revere. Julesburg has won four titles in school history, and Revere has won nine. That program was last in a title game in 2004, when it lost to Hi-Plains for the 6-man championship.
“The boys are excited, the community is excited,” Michel said. “It should be a fun week.”
The championship against Akron will be a rematch of a 22-3 Sedgwick County win on Oct. 30.
“They say it’s always hard to beat a good team twice, and Akron’s a very good program,” Michel said. “They’ve got a good defense. We’re going to have our work cut out for us.”
(3) Akron 16, (2) Norwood 0
Akron’s defense pitched a shutout as the Rams advanced to a title game for the first time since 2009. That was the last appearance in a stretch of five-straight for the program.
“Our kids just showed up to play today and did a really good job,” Akron coach Jerome Weers told the Scoreboard Show. “Our kids definitely have a very good defensive mindset, and they like playing it. They’re going to have to play good next week against SedgCo.”
Akron will host the 8-man title game.

(3) Eads 34, (4) Arickaree/Woodlin 12
Eads won the rematch of last season’s game.

COMMERCE CITY — The Classical Academy had designs on a championship on Saturday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. After all, TCA was appearing in its fifth state finals match in the past six years, the Titans’ second straight since moving up to Class 4A.
Fourth-seeded Evergreen had other ideas as they shut down, and even shutout, one of the state’s best offenses during a 1-0 title-winning performance over the No. 2 Titans (18-2). The victory gave the Cougars their second boys soccer crown and first since 1989, the last season of unclassified play in Colorado when Evergreen took out Fort Collins 1-0, as well. They lost to Mullen in the 4A finals in 2011.
For a still youthful team with only four seniors among the 22 who suited up for the playoffs, Evergreen was already powerful, especially defensively. In finishing with a 17-2-1 record, the Cougars posted 10 shutouts, earning their 10th against a team that entered having scored more goals than anyone in 4A.
TCA was averaging five goals a game and had already scored 17 in four postseason contests. They still have never won in the finals.
In the title match, Evergreen, who hadn’t been as high-powered offensively as TCA during the regular season, averaging 2.6 goals a game entering the day, had put in 18 in the playoffs. But, against TCA, the Cougars got back to what they do best, limit scoring opportunities with a talented defense and get timely saves from their goalie.
After 34 minutes of scoreless play, Benner Cochran sent an absolute screamer to the left pocket of the goal to give Evergreen a 1-0 lead just before halftime.
“It was the happiest I’ve ever been after a goal in my entire soccer career,” the junior midfielder said. “It was awesome.”
Then, facing all kinds of pressure from a desperate TCA squad in the second half, especially in the closing minutes, the Cougars’ defense made the plays needed to preserve the win.
“We have a really athletic defensive line and they just did everything they could to keep their fast forwards out of the goal,” Cochran said. “Their star player getting a red card kind of helped us out too, but they did awesome.”
That star player, Titus Grant, a junior forward for the Titans who tallied 29 goals (tied for most in 4A) and 14 assists this season, earned a second yellow card and one-game suspension after a collision with the Standley Lake goalie on a fifty-fifty ball during a 4-1 semifinals win on Wednesday.
The second yellow card was controversial, but Classical Academy still had plenty of weapons in the likes of Jaden Borja (22 goals, 13 assists) and Anders Carlson (11 goals, 7 assists).
While no doubt missing one of the best players in the state made it that much more difficult for TCA to produce a goal, Evergreen’s defense was also just that dominant. And, in goal, junior Logan Westgard had a number of eye-opening saves.
In fact, during the Titans’ last great look at goal with just over three minutes to go, Jeremy Baldes used his speed to break away from an Evergreen defender. Westgard decided to run out to try and snatch the ball in a play that seemed like it could go either way with a goal or a stop. Westgard corralled the ball and Evergreen was able to drain the clock from then on.
Evergreen coach Ross Fowler, in his third year with the program, second as the head coach, says the depth the Cougars possessed in goal this season was a real asset.
“We are ridiculously fortunate as a squad, because we have three goalkeepers,” he said. “Logan was the starting keeper today. Jack Cardillo has had a lot of minutes and has been just as important. Brian Belrose played on our JV.
“It was Logan’s day today. I could’ve put any one of the three in there and I wouldn’t have had any doubts that they were going to get the job done. Logan’s save in the last three minutes was just pure desire, pure bravery.”
Both teams will return nearly everyone in 2016.
“The work and desire of the group that we’ve got, they didn’t want those seniors to leave without a state championship,” Fowler said. “We want to repeat next year.”
COMMERCE CITY — No. 4-seeded Evergreen beat No. 2-seeded The Classical Academy, 1-0, to take home the 4A boys soccer crown on Saturday.
The lone goal came from Benner Cochran late in the first half.

AURORA — In a semi-bizarre Class 4A semifinal showdown between No. 1 Cheyenne Mountain and No. 4 Evergreen at Legacy Stadium, held with snow banks around the edges of the field and featuring a controversial goal, the Cougars found a way to sneak into the title game with a 4-3 victory.
Evergreen (16-2-1 overall) took a commanding lead off a Brock Anderson penalty kick goal in the 31st minute and a Ryan Gutberlet score in the 37th minute to make it 2-0. The Indians (15-3) got one back when Luke White won a scramble for the ball with Cougar keeper Logan Westgard and placed one in the right corner to cut the deficit to 2-1 with 20 seconds to go before the break.
The first half was, well, rather normal.
Then the second half began and chaos ensued. After a Steve Belrose header nudged the lead to 3-1 a few minutes after the break, Cheyenne Mountain needed a goal to keep its hopes alive. White delivered again, but this time the goal, as video, which isn’t used for replay at the high school level, but was seen in the press box, showed that the ball actually went through a hole in the right side of the net.
The goal was not only controversial, but simply shouldn’t have counted. Nonetheless, with 21 minutes to go, the Indians had new life as they trailed 3-2. That is, until Gutberlet, a freshman striker, all but sealed Evergreen’s title game appearance with his second goal of the game with 2:18 on the clock to make it 4-2. Cheyenne Mountain’s Sam Kilimann did score with 23 seconds left, but the Cougars prevailed.

Gutberlet, second on the team in goals with 10, has helped lead an offensive outburst for Evergreen in the playoffs. After scoring a total of four goals in their last four regular season games while going 2-1-1, the Cougars have exploded for 18 goals in four postseason contests.
“During the playoffs, we’ve stepped it up,” Gutberlet said. “Brock, Steve, and some of the other guys on the team are just racking up the goals right now. We are moving the ball really well.”
The first-year player has been at the forefront of the offensive fireworks, as well.
“My first goal was a really good touch by my friend Michael Belrose,” he said. “It was perfect. He laid it in and I shot. Second half got a little hectic, but we managed to pull it out.”
Evergreen, who lost to eventual state champion Cheyenne Mountain 1-0 in the semifinals two years ago, will be making their third appearance in a boys soccer state championship game. The Cougars lost to Mullen in the 4A finals in 2011 and beat Fort Collins in 1989, the last season of unclassified play.
“This is my freshman year and now we’re going to state,” Gutberlet said. “It’s awesome.”

The Classical Academy lost one of 4A’s best players in the first half of their semifinals game against Standley Lake.
Titus Grant, with 29 goals on the season, tied for the most in the classification, earned a second yellow card after the ref called a controversial penalty on him for a a collision with the Gators’ keeper on a fifty-fifty ball with 11:31 to go before the break. The Titans, the No. 2 seed in the bracket, were down a man the rest of the game.
No matter, as TCA rode Grant’s first goal, an amazing one from about 45 yards out and only 33 seconds in, and goals by Jaden Borja, Aaron Peck, and Anders Carlson, not to mention stifling defense, to a 4-1 victory.
The Classical Academy (18-1) will be making their fifth appearance in the past six years in a boys soccer state title game. They were the 3A runner-up in 2010, 2011, and 2013 and lost to Air Academy in the 4A finals last year. The Titans will face Evergreen in the 4A title game without Grant, who, by rule with a second yellow card, will be suspended for one contest.
Standley Lake (13-6) got a gorgeous goal on a free kick by senior forward Nick Rosser with 22 minutes left, but the Gators were mostly smothered otherwise. The No. 11 seed in the tournament, Standley Lake took down No. 22 Montrose, No. 6 Niwot, and No. 3 Battle Mountain during their Cinderella march to the Final Four.
The 4A state championship game will be played at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City this Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

AURORA — The state playoff brackets for Class 4A and 3A football were released on Sunday, with Pine Creek and Pueblo East each earning No. 1 overall seeds.
Both teams are defending champions.
Pine Creek, which went 10-0 during the regular season, is a two-time defending champion which enters the postseason on a 35-game winning streak. That mark is tied for the ninth-longest in state history.
The Eagles’ schedule was anything but easy. According to the CHSAA RPI, which will be used for postseason qualification beginning next season, it was the second-toughest schedule in 4A. They have wins over five ranked opponents, including four who were ranked in the top-5 at the time. In those games, Pine Creek’s average margin of victory was 26.8 points.
Pine Creek has been to the 4A title game in three of the past four seasons.
Longmont, the team Pine Creek beat to win 4A last year, is the No. 2 seed. The Trojans also went 10-0 in the regular season.
Those teams sit atop the 16-team field in 4A which is comprised of seven league champions and nine Wild Card spots. As it turned out, the field is comprised entirely of the top 16 teams in the final Wild Card points standings.
Other top seeds who will host first round games include No. 3 Windsor, No. 4 Vista Ridge, No. 5 Durango, No. 6 Dakota Ridge, No. 7 Ponderosa and No. 8 Wheat Ridge.
Find the complete 4A bracket here.

In 3A, Pueblo East went 9-1, with the lone loss coming in a cross-classification showdown with Longmont in Zero Week. The Eagles won their final nine games by an average of 31.8 points.
Their schedule, too, was a tough one. Five opponents eventually made their postseason field in the class they play in. Pueblo East went 4-1 in those games.
Also seeded highly in 3A are No. 2 Roosevelt, No. 3 Delta, No. 4 Fort Morgan, No. 5 Palisade, No. 6 The Classical Academy, No. 7 Evergreen, No. 8 Discovery Canyon. Rifle, last season’s runner-up, is No. 9.
The 16-team 3A field is made up of six automatic qualifiers via league champions, and then 10 Wild Card teams. Like 4A, the final field turned out to be the top 16 in the Wild Card points standings.
Find the full 3A bracket here.
The playoff fields for classes 5A, 2A, 1A, 8-man and 6-man were released last week. Those classes just completed their first round this past weekend.
